Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

The Lord tells us in the Gospel passage from chapter 6 in the fragment proclaimed this Sunday that his flesh is true food and his blood true drink, thus, anticipating what he will do later during the Last Supper when he institutes the Holy Eucharist.Christ is really and substantially present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. It is very important for us to contemplate with awe and wonder, over and over again, this real presence of Christ, which Blessed Pope Paul VI explained the fol-lowing way:“No one is unaware that the sacraments are the actions of Christ who administers them through men. And so the sac-raments are holy in themselves and they pour grace into the soul by the power of Christ, when they touch the body. These various ways in which Christ is present fill the mind with astonishment and offer the Church a mystery for her contemplation. But there is another way in which Christ is present in His Church, a way that surpasses all the others. It is His presence in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, which is, for this reason, "a more consoling source of devotion, a lovelier object of contemplation and holier in what it contains" than all the other sacraments; for it contains Christ Himself and it is "a kind of consummation of the spiritual life, and in a sense the goal of all the sacraments." This presence is called "real" not to exclude the idea that the others are "real" too, but rather to indicate presence par excellence, because it is substantial and through it Christ becomes present whole and entire, God and man. And so it would be wrong for anyone to try to explain this manner of presence by dreaming up a so-called "pneumatic" nature of the glorious body of Christ that would be present everywhere; or for anyone to limit it to symbolism, as if this most sacred Sacrament were to consist in nothing more than an efficacious sign "of the spiritual presence of Christ and of His intimate union with the faithful, the members of His Mystical Body."St. John Paul II also invited us to contemplated with love and piety the great mystery of the real presence of Christ among us, which chapter 6 in the Gospel according to St. John announces.“In the Eucharist we have Jesus, we have his redemptive sacrifice, we have his resurrection, we have the gift of the Holy Spirit, we have adoration, obedience and love of the Father. Were we to disregard the Eucharist, how could we overcome our own deficiency?The mystery of the Eucharist – sacrifice, presence, banquet – does not allow for reduction or exploitation; it must be experienced and lived in its integrity, both in its celebration and in the intimate converse with Jesus which takes place after receiving communion or in a prayerful moment of Eucharistic adoration apart from Mass. These are times when the Church is firmly built up and it becomes clear what she truly is: one, holy, catholic and apostolic; the people, temple and family of God; the body and bride of Christ, enlivened by the Holy Spirit; the universal sacrament of salva-tion and a hierarchically structured communion.The path taken by the Church in these first years of the third millennium is also a path of renewed ecumenical com-mitment. The final decades of the second millennium, culminating in the Great Jubilee, have spurred us along this path and called for all the baptized to respond to the prayer of Jesus “ut unum sint ” (Jn 17:11). The path itself is long and strewn with obstacles greater than our human resources alone can overcome, yet we have the Eucharist, and in its presence we can hear in the depths of our hearts, as if they were addressed to us, the same words heard by the Prophet Elijah: “Arise and eat, else the journey will be too great for you” (1 Kg 19:7). The treasure of the Eucharist, which the Lord places before us, impels us towards the goal of full sharing with all our brothers and sisters to whom we are joined by our common Baptism. But if this treasure is not to be squandered, we need to respect the demands which derive from its being the sacrament of communion in faith and in apostolic succession. By giving the Eucharist the prominence it deserves, and by being careful not to diminish any of its dimensions or demands, we show that we are truly conscious of the greatness of this gift. We are urged to do so by an uninterrupted tradition, which from the first centuries on has found the Christian community ever vigilant in guarding this “treasure”. Inspired by love, the Church is anxious to hand on to future generations of Christians, without loss, her faith and teaching with regard to the mystery of the Eucharist. There can be no danger of excess in our care for this mystery, for “in this sacrament is recapitulated the whole mystery of our salvation”.Let us take our place, dear brothers and sisters, at the school of the saints, who are the great interpreters of true Eucharistic piety. In them the theology of the Eucharist takes on all the splendour of a lived reality; it becomes “con-tagious” and, in a manner of speaking, it “warms our hearts”. Above all, let us listen to Mary Most Holy, in whom the mystery of the Eucharist appears, more than in anyone else, as a mystery of light. Gazing upon Mary, we come to know the transforming power present in the Eucharist. In her we see the world renewed in love. Contemplating her, assumed body and soul into heaven, we see opening up before us those “new heavens” and that “new earth” which will appear at the second coming of Christ. Here below, the Eucharist represents their pledge, and in a certain way, their anticipation: “Veni, Domine Iesu!” (Rev 22:20).In the humble signs of bread and wine, changed into his body and blood, Christ walks beside us as our strength and our food for the journey, and he enables us to become, for everyone, witnesses of hope. If, in the presence of this mys-tery, reason experiences its limits, the heart, enlightened by the grace of the Holy Spirit, clearly sees the response that is demanded, and bows low in adoration and unbounded love.Let us make our own the words of Saint Thomas Aquinas, an eminent theologian and an impassioned poet of Christ in the Eucharist, and turn in hope to the contemplation of that goal to which our hearts aspire in their thirst for joy and peace: Come then, good Shepherd, bread divine, still show to us thy mercy sign; O, feed us, still keep us thine; so we may see thy glories shine in fields of immortality. O thou, the wisest, mightiest, best, our present food, our future rest, come, make us each thy chosen guest, co-heirs of thine, and comrades blest with saints whose dwelling is with thee.”

En el fragmento del capítulo 6 del Evangelio según san Juan que se lee esta semana, el Señor nos dice que su carne es verdadera comida y su sangre verdadera bebida, anticipando lo que hará en la Ultima Cena cuando instituya la Sagrada Eucaristía.Cristo está realmente presente en el Santísimo Sacramento y es muy importante que contemplemos con renovado asom-bro, una y otra vez, esta presencia real de Cristo, que el beato Papa Pablo Vi explicaba de la siguiente manera:“Nadie ignora, en efecto, que los sacramentos son acciones de Cristo, que los administra por medio de los hombres. Y así los sacramentos son santos por sí mismos y por la virtud de Cristo: al tocar los cuerpos, infunden gracia en las almas.Estas varias maneras de presencia llenan el espíritu de estupor y dan a contemplar el misterio de la Iglesia. Pero es muy distinto el modo, verdaderamente sublime, con el cual Cristo está presente a su Iglesia en el sacramento de la Eucaristía, que por ello es, entre los demás sacramentos, el más dulce por la devoción, el más bello por la inteligencia, el más santo por el contenido; ya que contiene al mismo Cristo y es como la perfección de la vida espiritual y el fin de todos los sacra-mentos.Tal presencia se llama real, no por exclusión, como si las otras no fueran reales, sino por antonomasia, porque es también corporal y substancial, pues por ella ciertamente se hace presente Cristo, Dios y hombre, entero e íntegro. Falsamente explicaría esta manera de presencia quien se imaginara una naturaleza, como dicen, «pneumática» y omnipresente, o la redujera a los límites de un simbolismo, como si este augustísimo sacramento no consistiera sino tan sólo en un signo eficaz de la presencia espiritual de Cristo y de su íntima unión con los fieles del Cuerpo místico.”San Juan Pablo II también nos invitaba a contemplar con piedad y amor el misterio de la presencia real de Cristo entre nosotros que el capítulo 6 del Evangelio según san Juan anuncia.“En la Eucaristía tenemos a Jesús, tenemos su sacrificio redentor, tenemos su resurrección, tenemos el don del Espíritu Santo, tenemos la adoración, la obediencia y el amor al Padre. Si descuidáramos la Eucaristía, ¿cómo podríamos remediar nuestra indigencia?El Misterio eucarístico –sacrificio, presencia, banquete –no consiente reducciones ni instrumentalizaciones; debe ser vivido en su integridad, sea durante la celebración, sea en el íntimo coloquio con Jesús apenas recibido en la comunión, sea du-rante la adoración eucarística fuera de la Misa. Entonces es cuando se construye firmemente la Iglesia y se expresa real-mente lo que es: una, santa, católica y apostólica; pueblo, templo y familia de Dios; cuerpo y esposa de Cristo, animada por el Espíritu Santo; sacramento universal de salvación y comunión jerárquicamente estructurada.La vía que la Iglesia recorre en estos primeros años del tercer milenio es también la de un renovado compromiso ecuméni-co. Los últimos decenios del segundo milenio, culminados en el Gran Jubileo, nos han llevado en esa dirección, llamando a todos los bautizados a corresponder a la oración de Jesús « ut unum sint » (Jn 17, 11). Es un camino largo, plagado de obstáculos que superan la capacidad humana; pero tenemos la Eucaristía y, ante ella, podemos sentir en lo profundo del corazón, como dirigidas a nosotros, las mismas palabras que oyó el profeta Elías: « Levántate y come, porque el camino es demasiado largo para ti » (1 Re 19, 7). El tesoro eucarístico que el Señor ha puesto a nuestra disposición nos alienta hacia la meta de compartirlo plenamente con todos los hermanos con quienes nos une el mismo Bautismo. Sin embargo, para no desperdiciar dicho tesoro se han de respetar las exigencias que se derivan de ser Sacramento de comunión en la fe y en la sucesión apostólica.Al dar a la Eucaristía todo el relieve que merece, y poniendo todo esmero en no infravalorar ninguna de sus dimensiones o exigencias, somos realmente conscientes de la magnitud de este don. A ello nos invita una tradición incesante que, desde los primeros siglos, ha sido testigo de una comunidad cristiana celosa en custodiar este « tesoro ». Impulsada por el amor, la Iglesia se preocupa de transmitir a las siguientes generaciones cristianas, sin perder ni un solo detalle, la fe y la doctri-na sobre el Misterio eucarístico. No hay peligro de exagerar en la consideración de este Misterio, porque « en este Sacra-mento se resume todo el misterio de nuestra salvación ».Sigamos, queridos hermanos y hermanas, la enseñanza de los Santos, grandes intérpretes de la verdadera piedad eu-carística. Con ellos la teología de la Eucaristía adquiere todo el esplendor de la experiencia vivida, nos « contagia » y, por así decir, nos « enciende ».Pongámonos, sobre todo, a la escucha de María Santísima, en quien el Misterio eucarístico se muestra, más que en ningún otro, como misterio de luz. Mirándola a ella conocemos la fuerza trasformadora que tiene la Eucaristía. En ella vemos el mundo renovado por el amor. Al contemplarla asunta al cielo en alma y cuerpo vemos un resquicio del « cielo nuevo » y de la « tierra nueva » que se abrirán ante nuestros ojos con la segunda venida de Cristo. La Eucaristía es ya aquí, en la tierra, su prenda y, en cierto modo, su anticipación: « Veni, Domine Iesu! » (Ap 22, 20).En el humilde signo del pan y el vino, transformados en su cuerpo y en su sangre, Cristo camina con nosotros como nues-tra fuerza y nuestro viático y nos convierte en testigos de esperanza para todos. Si ante este Misterio la razón experimenta sus propios límites, el corazón, iluminado por la gracia del Espíritu Santo, intuye bien cómo ha de comportarse, sumién-dose en la adoración y en un amor sin límites.Hagamos nuestros los sentimientos de santo Tomás de Aquino, teólogo eximio y, al mismo tiempo, cantor apasionado de Cristo eucarístico, y dejemos que nuestro ánimo se abra también en esperanza a la contemplación de la meta, a la cual as-pira el corazón, sediento como está de alegría y de paz: “Buen pastor, pan verdadero, o Jesús, piedad de nosotros: nútre-nos y defiéndenos, llévanos a los bienes eternos en la tierra de los vivos. Tú que todo lo sabes y puedes, que nos alimentas en la tierra, conduce a tus hermanos a la mesa del cielo a la alegría de tus santos”.
