Milo, our 15lb terrier cross, has become the patriarch of our family over the past three years and occupies a huge part of my heart. He has been the namesake for one of my furniture design collections, the inspiration for many neutral colour palettes, and has had two guest appearances on my TV show Trend (which airs weekly on Chek.) Pet lovers can relate to my adoration for this little guy when I speak of the warmth and compassion that our furry friend brings into our home. However, I am sure that you can also relate to some of my frustrations when making the home pet friendly, while maintaining a lovely looking space. Copious amounts of hair or fur, scratching of your furniture and the occasional accident on your favorite area rug are just few challenges that may present themselves. On the other hand, with a little extra planning you can make your coexistence much easier. While each pet is a little different in their needs and requirements, here are some tricks that have worked for our family.

One suggestion is to choose materials for your furniture that are extremely durable and compliment your pet’s hair colour. I am extremely lucky that Milo fi ts into my obsession with all shades of grey (purely by coincidence). I have chosen furniture that is within the grey tones and in fabrics of ultra suede and leatherette for the main pieces. While leather is also a very durable option, I found that leatherette was a better option for us. They exceed up to a 500,000 double rub count, making them less likely to puncture

from little claws and can be wiped down with mild soap and water (no leather conditioning or special cleaners required.)

Having hard surface fl oors, with good quality area rugs has been a blessing for our pet friendly home. While we realize that investing in an expensive area rug at this point isn’t practical for us, having the option to take a mid-range, good quality rug out of the house to have it professionally cleaned or replaced if it is unsalvagable is a more economical option than replacing wall to wall carpeting throughout the entire home. If you have a large dog that will mark softer hardwoods with their claws, a durable luxury vinyl plank, tile or laminate fl oor may be the best option for you.

One project I embarked on was the dog bathing station that I set up in our laundry room. Of course I was inspired by one of the many ideas found on pinterest. Milo is fairly small, and doesn’t need a lot of elaborate features. I installed a faucet with a hose attachment, deep laundry tub and shelves with many small baskets for organizing the tools needed to get the little guy spick- and-span after a long hike or walk.
