There have been 605 closed unit sales year to date.
Cover, or greenmanure, crops areusually grownwhen the gardensoil is idle. Theycan also be plantedbetween rows offruits or vegetablesto serve as livingmulch. Cover cropsare also called“catch crops”because their deeproots absorb nutri-ents from the soilthat could other-wise leach away orbe unavailable togarden crops withshorter roots. Whentilled under, covercrops decomposeand release those“caught” nutrients.
There are twomain types of covercrops, warm seasonand cool season.Early Septemberthrough the end ofthis month is thetime to plant thecool season crop. The idea is they areplanted earlyenough so theirroots develop beforewinter but lateenough so they donot complete theirgrowing cycle (anddie) before theweather gets cold.
Some cover crops(those from thelegume family)even trap andtransform atmos-pheric nitrogen intheir roots. Thisnitrogen serves asa fertilizer sourcefor future crops.Cover crops in thegrass or grain fami-ly don’t actively fixnitrogen, but usual-ly create a thickmulch and producea large amount of
organic matter tobe tilled under. They also havedeep roots thatloosen compactedsoils, therebyimproving drainageand aeration.
Legumes needcertain strains ofbacteria to enablethem to convertnitrogen gas fromthe air into a formthat plants can use.The bacteria need-ed by various kindsof legumes may ormay not already bein your garden soil.To be certain, legume seedsshould be coatedwith an inoculantpowder that con-tains livingRhizobium spores.Commercial inocu-lant is usually inex-pensive and widelyavailable. Somelegume seeds aresold pretreatedwith the properbacteria.
Because they areused in rotationwith other crops inthe same gardenlocation, covercrops can help sup-press harmful soilnematodes.Nematodes, whichare microscopicworm-like para-sites, tend to behost-specific,attacking just one
crop or crop family. They do not “likethe taste” of otherplant families andtheir numbers willdecline without thepreferred foodsource.
Broadcast theseed evenly whenplanting. Two tofour times the ratemay be used toassure a goodstand. Cover theseed with a thinlayer of soil by rak-ing over it. Keepthe area moist untilthe seedlingsemerge. Lightwatering may beneeded twice a day,or more, in hotweather. Mow andharvest the covercrops before they

Q: Dear Ed, Ihave a new coffeemaker and wantto make my coffeewith filteredwater. Withoutinstalling add-onequipment ordrilling holes inmy countertop, what are somepermanent waterfilter options for akitchen faucet?
– Sally,Connecticut
A: I recommendthe followingoptions:
First, look into awhole-house canis-ter/cartridge waterfilter your plumbercan install on a mainwater line in yourhome. Since the fil-ter installs on amain line, most of
the homes plumbingfixtures benefit fromthe filtered water. This can include thekitchen faucet, dish-washer and icemaker. Whole-housefilters are often rec-ommended for homes
that use well water.A second option is
a point-of-use waterfilter. This smallerwater filter installsunder the kitchensink and connectsdirectly to thekitchen faucet. While
easier to install, onlythe kitchen faucetgets filtered water. But, with a point-of-use filter you canalso install a specialkitchen faucet with abuilt-in beveragelever.

AlthoughOklahoma is stillenjoying the warmweather of early fall,it will not be longuntil Jack Frostmakes an appear-ance.
In order to keepyour home comfort-able in the winterwithout spending afortune on heatingcosts, now is the timeto get your homeready for the winterseason, said GinaPeek, OklahomaState UniversityCooperativeExtension housingand consumer spe-
cialist.“Home energy
costs can consume alarge portion of yourbudget. There aresteps homeownersshould take now inan effort to cut costswhile still keepingyour home warmand cozy,” Peek said.“You sure don’t wantto be outside fixinggaps in the chimneyor caulking aroundwindows and doorswhen the wind isblowing 40 miles perhour and the tem-perature is belowfreezing. Takeadvantage of thisearly fall weather tomake any neededrepairs.”
The first thinghomeowners shoulddo is schedule a ser-vice for their homeheating system. It isnot a good idea towait until the tem-perature drops. Inthe event there areany problems withthe system, gettingthem fixed now willhelp ensure a warmhome environmentwhen it is time toturn on the heater.
One of the easiestthings to do to helpcut your winter heat-ing bill is to simplyadjust the tempera-ture on your heatingsystem. When youare home, set thethermostat at least
to 68 degrees, as rec-ommended by theDepartment ofEnergy. When youare asleep or out ofthe house for longerperiods, turn thethermostat back. The more you turnback, the more yousave. This will helphomeowners save onutility bills.
“Using a program-mable thermostatcan make it easier toadjust the tempera-ture in your homewhen you’re notthere,” Peek said.
Seal air leaksaround utility cut-throughs for pipes, gaps around thechimney and unfin-
ished spaces behindcupboards and clos-ets. Add caulking orweather strippingaround leaky doorsand windows.
Peek also suggeststaking advantage ofpassive heat, whichis using the sun’senergy for heatingyour living space.
“The advantages ofpassive heat are two-fold,” she said.“First, it’s environ-mentally friendly. And second, it’s costeffective and canhelp reduce the costof your winter ener-gy bills.”
Keep drapes and
curtains open duringthe day, especially onwindows facingsouth and west.Avoid placing light-blocking objects infront of the windows, which in turn blocksthe sun.
While a nice fire inthe fireplace can bewarm and invitingon a cold winter’snight, keep thedamper closed whenit is not in use. Anopen damper is likekeeping a windowopen in the winter.Cold air comes inand warm airescapes.
One way to maxi-
mize the heat fromyour fireplace is toinstall a heat-airexchange systemthat blows warm airback into the room. However, if you don’tuse your fireplace atall, consider plug-ging and sealing thechimney flue.
“It’s understand-able if you want tospend these last fewweeks enjoying thewarm weather, butby taking care ofthese issues now, you’ll save yourselftime and money, aswell as avoid frustra-tion in the future,”Peek said.

Pure and simple water filter options
By David W. Myers
There aren’tmany bargains onhome-related stuffin October. If you’relooking for deals onmajor appliances orTVs, wait until theend of November.
DEAR MR.MYERS: We real-ly like youradvice about thebest home-relateditems to buy eachmonth. What arethe best deals wecan find for ourhome in October?
ANSWER:Thanks for the com-pliment. Alas, pro-fessional shopperssay that Octoberrarely brings greatdeals on householdgoods, in partbecause retailersare gearing up forthe super-deep dis-
counts that they’llbegin offering onthe infamous“Black Friday.”
This year, BlackFriday will land onNov. 27. Manystores, though, already haveannounced thatthey’ll extend theirsales into the firstweek of Decemberor beyond.
Still, there are afew bargains outthere now. The lastof patio furnitureand barbeques, which were deeplydiscounted as sum-mer wound to aclose in September, can now be pur-chased for as littleas 20 percent oftheir original priceas retailers clearfloor space for theirautumn and holi-day-related goods.
If you’re the sortwho likes to deco-rate your home forHalloween, yourbest bet would be towait until a fewdays after Oct. 31and store it awayuntil next year. That’s when storesslash prices to movetheir unsold inven-tory instead ofspending money towarehouse it. But ifyou need such deco-rations for thisyear’s event, consid-er delaying yourpurchases untilOct. 25 or so: That’swhen stores startcutting prices onslow-moving itemsthat you might like.
My son and I areboth lifetime EagleScouts, and we stillspend lots of nights“housed” under themoon and stars. If
you need a tent, portable stove orother campingequipment, now’sthe time to buythem. Retailersknow that suchitems won’t sellwhen the coldweather soonarrives.
Ditto for manytypes of outdoorgardening tools.
Hold off on pur-chasing most “bigticket” items foryour home untilnext month’sBlack Friday orthe Internet’s“Cyber Monday,”the latter of whichoccurs just threedays later. Thoseare the days whenyou’ll find some ofthe best deals ofthe year on majorappliances for thekitchen and laun-
dry room, as wellas televisions, computers andother electronicgadgets.

TRIVIA: “BlackFriday” is aphrase originallycreated by law-enforcement offi-cials, because itoften results in
massive trafficjams, long linesat cashier standsand sometimeseven arson firesor other acts ofviolence.

This year fire pre-vention week wasOct. 4-10 to remindhomeowners thatmany potential firehazards go unde-tected because peo-ple simply do nottake the steps nec-essary to fireprooftheir homes.
You should do asimple regularinspection of the fol-lowing:
Inspect extensioncords checking forfrayed or damagedareas and replaceas needed.
Check foroverused outlets ordamaged electricalplugs and use afused power bar formultiple plugs on asingle outlet.
Inspect the loca-tion of a portableheater that mightbe too close to com-bustible objectssuch as bedding orcurtains.
Install and main-tain a workingsmoke alarm ineach bedroom orsleeping area andat least one alarmin the hallway out-side of bedrooms.
The batteries inolder alarms shouldbe changed at leastonce a year. Thereare newer lithiumion battery, dualsensor alarms thatoffer greater protec-tion and now comewith a 10-year bat-tery life.
The new FirstAlert and Kidde
alarms offer bothionization and pho-toelectric sensors toprovide the earliestpossible warning, regardless of thetype of fire.
According to a2010 report by theCenter for DiseaseControl andPrevention (CDC),someone in theUnited States diedin a fire every 169minutes, and some-one was injuredevery 30 minutes.
That same yearfire departmentsresponded to384,000 home fires, which claimed thelives of 2,640 peopleand injured another13,350, not includ-ing firefighters.
Most victims offires die from smoke
or toxic gases andnot from burns, with smoking listedas the leading causeof fire-relateddeaths. Most firesare preventable andlives can be saved.
Designate atleast two escaperoutes from eachsleeping area. Eachroom used for sleep-ing must have aneasily operable andaccessible largewindow or a doorleading to the out-side. There alsomust be a clearpathway from thesleeping room to ahallway that leadsdirectly to the out-side, not throughan adjoining room.
Teach everyone inyour home to stop, drop and roll, a
technique used incase clothing catch-es fire.
Do not store gaso-line, paint or othervolatile liquids inthe same room witha furnace or waterheater.
Teach kids thatmatches, lightersand candles are tobe handled byadults. Matches andlighters should bestored in a securedrawer or cabinet.
Do not smokeindoors or whileresting on a softcombustible sofa orchair. Extinguishcigarettes or cigarscompletely in sandor water. If you usematches, hold thematch until it hascooled before dis-carding it.
