For a number of years I recommended my veterinary practice clients to avoid feeding proprietary pet foods but instead to feed a home-made diet of brown rice, vegetables
and chicken, fish or meat sold for human consumption.
Although a number of people were able to follow this recommendation and achieved remarkable results, many found that preparing food at home for the pet was simply too daunting a task.
For this reason I developed Burns Real Food, based upon the home-made diet which I used to recommend. As the name implies, Burns Real Food is just that, a simple food that is intended to allow the body to function as it should. There are no secret or magic ingredients; there are no added pharmacologically active supplements or ingredients.
Burns foods are not intended to intervene in order to alter the normal metabolism of the body. The aim is to stand back and let the body get on with what it does best: to maintain and repair itself and to prevent deterioration of the organ systems. This is in contrast to medicinal products which are intended to have a direct therapeutic action.
The principal ingredients in Burns are whole grains and animal proteins which I believe reflect how the diets of the dog and cat have changed since becoming domesticated. The traditional human diet for many centuries has been whole grain based and it is reasonable to expect that pets shared that diet. It is only in recent times that our modern western diet veered away from that. Burns’ philosophy is to revisit that traditional way of eating.
We do not use refined grains, all ingredients are named (no “cereals, animal and vegetable derivatives” etc). Recipes are fixed so the ingredients do not alter when cheaper ingredients are available. This is of enormous importance as many health problems are caused by undiagnosed intolerance to food ingredients.

There are two strands to the Holistic Approach to health and nutrition. The first of these is the selection of suitable food. However, it is almost as important to ensure that the quantity of food is right. Overfeeding will undo much of the benefit of feeding the correct type of food. The best, and only reliable method of assessing whether a food is going to be beneficial to health is by a feeding trial which should be carried out as outlined below.
1. Gradually change to the trial food. Slow introduction allows a smooth change of intestinal bacteria, thus minimizing the risk of intestinal upset. 2. Following the introductory period the trial food should be the only food given 3. Quantity of food must be carefully controlled to meet but not exceed the pet’s requirements. 4. Regular suitable exercise helps to use up excess calories, discharge waste products, improve circulation and provides mental stimulation. 5. Ask your veterinary surgeon to empty your dog’s anal glands. This aids in the elimination of waste from the system.
6. All family members must co-operate by ensuring that no extras, titbits, treats, table scraps or other foods are given. This approach has to be tailored to the needs of the individual because there are so many individuals whose differing needs have to be accommodated. It is not enough to try the diet and hope for the best. The Burns Pet Nutrition Team can assist in feeding to promote health & wellbeing.

Benefits of Burns
There are many reasons why customers decide to buy products and services. Burns offers a wider range of benefits than most pet food manufacturers.
Developed by a Veterinary SurgeonJohn Burns achieved great success as a veterinary surgeon by recommending home cooked food. Finding that many people couldn’t manage the daunting task of preparing food at home on a daily basis he developed Burns Real Food.
British OwnedBurns Pet Nutrition is a British, family owned business unlike most large brands which belong to multi-national corperations.
Veterinary and Prescription Diets™Most people mistakenly believe that Veterinary and Prescription Diets™ are medicines which must be under the control of a veterinary practice and used only on the recommendation of a veterinary surgeon. None of that is true. They are only foods and Burns can offer an alternative to most of them which is available to the pet trade. Our Product Comparison Chart lists the veterinary food and our recommended alternative. This is backed by expert advice from the Burns Nutrition Team. Most veterinary foods are designed to assist a specific organ system or function. Burns foods offer holistic (whole body) benefits.
Health BenefitsBurns Real Food can help manage dietary related health issues such as bad breath and excess moulting and offers nutritional support for pets with major health disorders.
Behaviour BenefitsBurns is recommended by many behaviourists and trainers. A good diet can promote good behaviour and reduce hyperactivity.
Lower Feeding CostsBurns Real Food is highly digestible and contains only high quality ingredients therefore daily feeding amounts are significantly lower than those of other brands. This also has an environmental benefit as the pet produces less waste.

Many commercial pet foods contain chemical colourings, flavourings and preservatives. These do not have to be declared if they are not added at the manufacturing stage. While it is claimed that these substances are harmless, we believe that a natural diet, wherever possible, is best. Chemical additives must inevitably contribute to the build up of toxic waste in the system. Dried foods must have an anti-oxidant or the fat will oxidise (go rancid). Most pet foods are preserved with the chemical anti-oxidants BHA, BHT or Ethoxyquin which are usually included in the raw materials. Some manufacturers include the words “Naturally preserved” but this may (legally) conceal the fact that although anti-oxidants were not added during manufacture they have been added to the raw materials listed in the ingredients. Many pet foods do not list BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin in the ingredients but will state that the food contains ‘EC permitted preservatives/anti-oxidants’. Burns Pet Nutrition does not use artificial colourings or flavourings and the raw materials are naturally preserved with mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) and Rosemary Oil. We believe that we were the first British manufacturer to use natural preservatives, thus demonstrating yet again our commitment to providing the best food for our pets.
Chemicals in the diet
Are you feeding a Veterinary or Prescription Diet™?
Burns Pet Nutrition diets can replace most of the Veterinary and Prescription Diets™ at a fraction of the cost. The tables overleaf show, in broad terms, which Burns food can be used to replace the Veterinary-only Diets. This information is not a blanket recommendation. We advise that pet owners consult with the Burns Nutrition Team on 0800 083 66 96 before changing as the diet should be tailored to suit the individual pet.
The holistic properties of Burns products mean that they can replace many of the Veterinary-only foods.
Burns promotes the normal, natural physiology of the body as a whole, unlike veterinary foods which are formulated to alter specific organ systems
Turn the page to find out which Burns diet could replaceyour expensive Veterinary or Prescription Diet™
If you are, you probably believe that you are buying a medicine for the treatment or prevention of a disease of your pet. If you do, you are mistaken. Although Veterinary and Prescription Diets™ are sold exclusively through veterinary practices they are not medicines and there are no legal restrictions on their sale.

Obesity in dogsObesity is an accumulation of excess fat in the body as a result of an energy (calorie) intake which exceeds requirements. Overeating has numerous consequences of which excessive weight is only one. Many owners are unaware that there are other signs of overfeeding (even if the dog is lean). For example hyperactivity, itchy skin, moulting, digestive upset, tooth tartar, bad breath and full anal glands can also indicate the dog or cat is eating more than it needs. For more information please ask for a copy of John Burns’ Guide to Natural Health Care or call our nutritionists on the free helpline: 0800 083 66 96. Obesity tends to occur in a dog that is less physically active whereas the active dog will tend to discharge the excess. Obesity is associated with a shortened life span, disease of the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, rheumatism and arthritis. The overweight dog cannot tolerate warm weather, is less able to exercise and will generally have less fun than a lean, healthy dog.
How can you tell if your dog is overweight? Many owners are surprised when they are told that their dog is overweight. The easiest way to tell is by feeling the rib cage. The ribs should be easily and clearly felt with little flesh between the fingers when you pinch the skin. You should also be able to see a waist when looking at your dog from above.
Which food? All of the Burns adult maintenance formulations contain controlled levels of fat (oil) and are considered ‘light’. However Burns High Oats recipe can be helpful in the control of obesity as oats have a higher fibre level than rice or maize. The high fibre level is due to the food ingredients themselves rather than an 'additive'. Specialist or Veterinary diets for weight control are usually high in fibre (cellulose which is indigestible plant material) to reduce the digestibility
of the food. These foods are an expensive way of producing faeces.High Oats is low in fat and protein. The high digestibility means that the dog can feel satisfied by a small volume of food. Weight control can be achieved by feeding Burns High Oats according to the animals target weight (not actual weight). Vegetables (cooked and raw) can safely be included to help fill the dog up if you think that is needed. It is important to check the weight regularly to ensure that the weight reduction programme is on course.
Underweight dogsIt is first necessary to establish whether the dog really is underweight. Please contact the Burns nutritionists for advice on this. There are so many overweight pets that a fit, lean one often looks underweight. Forget what the weight charts say. You should be able to feel the ribs with only a thin covering of skin. In short coated dogs you may even see the last few ribs when the dog is twisting and turning. If your dog is underweight and the bones are prominent we have several higher calorie diets which are suitable. A higher calorie diet is often preferable to simply increasing the food intake as this reduces the efficiency of digestion and the dog may not put in weight. Increased feeding may even cause problems including loose stools.

HIGH ENERGY LAMBComplete high energy food for the large-breed growing dog, pregnant/ nursing
bitches and underweight adult dog.
It is now well established that high intakes of protein and fat during puppyhood can lead to health problems in the adult, for example obesity and skeletal disorders, especially hip dysplasia. Burns puppy foods contain controlled levels of protein, fat and minerals to ensure that requirements for energy, muscle and bone development are met but not exceeded.

Burns Alert is a food for working dogs but with a difference. Foods for working dogs are traditionally formulated using high levels of fat and protein to meet the energy demands of heavy physical activity. For many, if not most working dogs, work requires mental alertness and low or moderate physical activity; they must also be calm, well-behaved and attentive. For example, this would apply to dogs which assist people with disabilities of sight, hearing or PAT dogs. For them, a low energy diet is indicated most of the time.

Burns Canine Alert is formulated to meet those demands. Protein and fat levels are controlled; this promotes excellent physical and mental health. Levels of antioxidants and omega 3 fats are increased; this helps to neutralise free radicals which can inhibit brain function. Working dog foods also tend to use low quality ingredients to keep the cost low. At Burns we believe that high quality ingredients promote good health. This ensures optimum performance and is more economical in the long run.

Burns Real Food for Cats is a British made range of hypo-allergenic diets for cats and kittens. These highly digestible diets were developed by veterinary surgeon John Burns and are suitable for both healthy cats and those that are prone to skin or digestive problems. In some cases these diets can be used as alternatives to Veterinary and Prescription diets™.
Irritating problems (e.g. bad breath, excessive moulting and strong smelling stools) that many cat owners take as normal can often be linked to an inappropriate diet. These problems should not occur if the cat is fed correctly (i.e. not overfed) on a healthy, low fat, naturally preserved diet such as Burns.

Burns Real Food for Kittens is a complete diet made with duck and rice. It is suitable from weaning to 6 months old. For young kittens we suggest that the food is soaked in warm water and made into a porridge consistency. Kittens have very small stomachs so small frequent meals are recommended. At six months old they can change to Burns Real Food for Cats.

It is vital that rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas are fed on a high fibre diet. Dental problems, digestive upset, obesity and even fly strike can all be attributed to a lack of fibre in the diet.
Commercial dried diets (pellets, flaked foods and cereals) were originally developed to promote weight gain for meat production. Even today they tend to be too low in fibre and too high in protein and carbohydrates.
With enough variation of hay, herbs, vegetables and wild plants there may be no need for dried cereals, pellets or flaked food in the diet. This should not be attempted without first seeking advice from a vet or a Burns nutritionist.

Ideally the diet of the pet rabbit, guinea pig or chinchilla should mimic that of their wild cousins. Grass and hay must be the bulk of the diet. Hay should always be available and supplemented with fresh vegetables, wild plants and herbs. Dry pelleted food and cereal mixes should form the smallest part of the diet and may be weaned out completely on advice from a vet if your pet is overweight or suffering from a health problem. However, these can only be weaned out if your pet is eating a good variety of wild plants, herbs and vegetables every day. Young, pregnant or nursing rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas or those housed outdoors may still have a need for a high fibre dry pelleted food.

Hay is the foundation of the feeding pyramid and should not be considered as simply bedding material. A variety of hay and grass should form the bulk of the diet as its high fibre content supports digestive function. Chewing hay and grass also helps to promote healthy teeth.
