Our guest speaker this month will be William “Bill” Koederitz. He will discuss real-time optimization through the use of automated technology. One of the main objectives of this innovative technology is geared towards reducing drilling capital expenditures. In a world where the new cell phones can fly a remote controlled aircraft, a series of robots can manufacture a car in a few hours, a commercial pilot can program the flight plan into a tablet computer then sit back and relax from take-off until touch-down, and a rocket powered sky-crane can

Bill Koederitz, principal engineer in the Automated Drilling Controls R&D group

Bill Koederitz is a Principal Engineer in the Automated Drilling Controls R&D Group of NOV’s Rig Solutions IMO division, located in Cedar Park, Texas. Bill’s primary job function is the development of new technology for future drilling information and control systems. In his 19 years with NOV, Bill has been engaged in various aspects of new product development.

Prior to joining NOV, Bill studied and worked in the Louisiana State University Petroleum Engineering Department as an Instructor, well control researcher and trainer, and network administrator. Bill also worked for Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) as a drilling engineer in Louisiana, California and Alaska, as well as on ARCO’s staff in Dallas, Texas.

Bill has BS, MS and PhD degrees in Petroleum Engineering from Louisiana State University. He is a member of SPE and AADE and is a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Texas.

Death of skilled workers Imperils $100 Billion in projects

Bloomberg reports, after spending years searching for enough crude to pump, the U.S. oil and natural gas industry is now struggling to find and pay for enough skilled workers to tap the abundant supply in shale rock, putting $100 billion in planned petrochemical projects at risk.

Engineers and similar

professionals earned an average $183,000 to $285,000 in 2012 depending on their position and background, a 30 percent increase since 2009, reports NES Global Talent data show. Wages in energy and mining have grown at nine times the rate of all industries since 2008, and starting salaries for petroleum engineering graduates are about $98,000, up 9.7 percent since 2008, according to PayScale Inc.

The need is acute at the newest chemical, refining and export complexes that serve a shale-drilling renaissance that has given U.S. companies the competitive advantage of low gas prices. As shale projects and their infrastructure multiplies, the

ensuing war for talent will double labor costs by 2020 for skilled workers such as geoscientists and engineers, according to NES Global and Piper Morgan Associates.

“If you can spell ‘shale,’ you can get a job,” Ryan Lance, chief executive officer of ConocoPhillips, said March 5 at the IHS CERAWeek energy conference in Houston.

Wage costs that already have pushed up price tags for energy-related plants from Australia to Canada by as much as 20 percent are forecast to balloon more, putting $100 billion of U.S. projects at risk during the next decade, based on data compiled by Bloomberg.

Natural gas futures rally to 6-week high after u.s. supply data

LOGA reports, natural gas futures added to gains during U.S. morning hours on Thursday, hitting a six-week high after a report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration showed natural gas supplies fell more than expected last week.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, natural gas futures for delivery in April traded at USD3.591 per million British thermal units during U.S. morning trade, up 3.5 percent on the day.

Prices rose by as much as 3.7 percent earlier in the session to hit a daily high of USD3.602 per million British thermal units.

The April contract traded at USD3.548 prior to the release of the U.S. Energy Information Administration report.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration said in its weekly report that natural gas storage in the U.S. in the week ended March 1 fell by 146 billion cubic feet, compared to expectations for a drop of 134 billion cubic feet.

Inventories fell by 92 billion cubic feet in the same week a year earlier, while the five-year average change for the week is a decline of 107 billion cubic feet.

Total U.S. natural gas storage stood at 2.083 trillion cubic feet as of last week. Stocks were 361 billion cubic feet less than last year at this time and 269 billion cubic feet above the five-year average of 1.814 trillion cubic feet for this time of year.

The report showed that in the East Region, stocks were 73 billion cubic feet above the five-year average, following net withdrawals of 77 billion cubic feet.

Stocks in the Producing Region were 123 billion cubic feet above the five-year average of 694 billion cubic feet after a net withdrawal of 58 billion cubic feet.

Meanwhile, sentiment on the heating fuel remained upbeat after weather forecasts released earlier continued to point to colder temperatures spreading across the eastern half of the U.S. over the next week.

Bullish speculators are betting on the cold weather boosting late-winter demand for the heating fuel.

The heating season from November through March is the peak demand period for U.S. gas consumption. Nearly 50 percent of all U.S. households use gas for heating.

Dear Friend: December 1, 2012 The Lafayette Chapter of the American Association of Drilling Engineers is pleased to announce our 20th annual Scholarship Sporting Clays Tournament. The event will be held on Friday, March 22nd and Saturday, March 23rd, 2013, at Cajun Elite Shooting Complex in Jennings, LA. Proceeds from the event will help fund oil industry scholarships at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Louisiana State University and Nicholls State University. Enclosed is the entry form and sponsorship information for the tournament. Registration and Flight times are outlined below:

Submissions should focus on new technology being used in today's oil and gas operations and include a write-up ready to publish that clearly explains the technology and how it is being used

in 350 words or less. A high-resolution image showcasing the

technology or tool may accompany a submission for consideration. Submissions should focus on technology, tools and applications, not sales.
