How can an apparel retailer best leverage its RFID investment and source tagging for inventory management to also enhance its loss prevention capabilities? LP solutions are typically separate from inventory management, point-of-sale, and other in-store systems. Traditional LP technologies have played their own critical role, detecting and deterring theft. Now, apparel retailers can leverage open standards-based RFID for both loss prevention and inventory management, bringing previously disparate solutions together in new and compel-ling ways. Checkpoint‘s new RFID Overhead EAS Solution enables them to do so.
For retailers adopting item-level RFID the solution offers:

INTRODUCING THE RFID OVERHEAD EAS SOLUTION
rFid oVerhead eaS Solution
The Overhead EAS Solution is an industry first RFID-based EAS solution designed for ap-parel retailers. It leverages open-standards RFID technology to function effectively as an exit door loss prevention solution, and consists of the fol-lowing components:
� Hardware: Overhead RFID reader and antenna
The hardware consists of a primary RFID reader enclosure containing Checkpoint’s unique UHF RFID reader, specifi cally designed and optimized for retail applications. The box is mounted on the ceiling above the exit door, and reads RFID tags that pass through the door. In addition, two sat-ellite antennas are installed adjacent to the read-er box, and an alarm box is installed near the exit door to provide audible and visible alerts.
The reader box can be installed in two config-urations:
1. Concealed confi guration: Installed above ceiling drywall, making it completely invisible.
2. Visible confi guration: Flush-mounted to the ceiling and typically hung just inside the exit door. Retailers can opt to paint or apply de-cals to the enclosure in order to match the store’s decor.
� Software: On-board fi ltering
On-board fi ltering software ensures alarm in-tegrity by effectively identifying tags that are moving through the coverage area, rather than
alarming on tagged items that are located nearby. This dramatically increases read accu-racy, virtually eliminating false alarms caused by unwanted (also known as “stray” or “bleed”) reads. In addition, this can easily be combined with Checkpoint’s Merchandise Visibility Soft-ware to provide real-time, accurate inventory visibility, enabling retailers to reduce out-of-stocks and increase sales.
� RFID Tags: Incorporated into hard tags, labels, and apparel swing tickets
The Overhead Solution is available with hard tags, labels, and swing tickets, each certifi ed by Checkpoint for use with the Overhead System to en-sure read accuracy and data integrity.
Together, these components enable apparel re-tailers to deter and detect theft, and with Check-point’s Merchandise Visibility Solution, to reduce out -of-stocks, reduce working capital, and in-crease sales.

For retailers who have already implemented RFID-based Merchandise Visibility, the Overhead Solution provides the additional benefit of knowing what is leaving the store, leveraging the same tag that the retailer is already using, and cost-effec-tively obtaining loss prevention benefits.
Retailers leveraging EAS today in new stores and stores undergoing remodeling may choose to adopt RFID-based EAS, recognizing it is the “next-generation” technology supporting item-lev-el RFID that will deliver continued value. Exit door protection can serve as the ideal first step on the path to item-level RFID for these retailers. Addi-tional benefits will then follow.
Source Tagging
Apparel retailers may start their RFID imple-mentation by applying tags to merchandise in the store. From this point, they can work with Check-point to quickly move to at-source tagging, which reduces tagging costs and increases compliance of the retailer’s tagging program.
Source tagging can be done with RFID-only tags, or combination AM/RFID or RF/RFID dual tags. By dual-tagging at the source, apparel re-tailers are prepared with loss prevention both for RFID-equipped stores as well as traditional EAS-equipped stores. As stores are remodeled and systems upgraded, the retailer can change these stores over to RFID, to minimize the long-term costs of ownership and consumables.
Merchandise Visibility
Next, retailers with RFID source tagging in place for loss prevention can expand from the exit door to a full Merchandise Visibility imple-mentation, including receiving, front store/back store transitions, cycle counting and inventory counts, and point-of-sale, enabling them to ob-tain the benefits of reducing out-of-stocks, re-ducing working capital requirements, and in-creasing sales.
