From 1 The last election in Dur- ham (May 6, Primary) may have opened our eyes to a number of things. First of all it has to be considered some kind of a victory for the system oriented politicians in our midst. To add more Black Faces to anything improves its looks, but not necessarily its responsiveness to Black needs. The Durham Morning Herald . did correctly see through most of the mysti- que surrounding the Durham Committee on "Negro" Af- fairs. The fact of the matter is that the DCNA vacillated too long before it decided to commit itself to Shirley. While it was holding out wait- ing for I don't know what, Good oF Terry from Duke slipped in and worked a mean think. The one thing that Black people who are system oriented have to un- derstand is that in playing the game you can't sleep on the job. The other thing is that given the choice between a liberal and anything else Black people usually go for the liberal. They voted for Terry 'cause they were scared of George, and basically because no body did home work in explaining why Blacks should have voted for our sister. For the most part the DCNA is living under a number of illusions. (1) Black people can not depend on any one rreans to deal with out situation. The DCNA is still playing the old game of vote and you shall be free! which is a lie. (2) The DCNA is still composed basi- cally of old men. There is verys youthful input into whatever happens. This was one of the reasons that Tary could buy so many of our young people to work for him. The DCNA has failed to grow and to change with the times. Yeah I know, I sound just like the white boy up town Well, he probably said it be- cause it was interesting to him and also because they always trying to figure out what we are doing. I'm telling you cause I recognize the facts that underly what he sees from the outside. Any- body on the block will tell you that when your game gets so shaky white folks can see through it, you've been had and you best split or find another game. I feel very strongly about the DCNA. I have the deepest amount of re- spect for the people in it that I know. It is the only inde- pendent organization trying to deal with Black problems. This 1 as a Black man must recognize and understand. What I am simply trying to do is to speak to some of the issues that the DCNA as well as Black people in general need to be concerned about. You ought to understand by now that North Carolina is a racist state, that George Wallace and his people are not coming to the DCNA to make a deal. We have to understand that a group of elite men can not set around and speak for the Black com- munity when they don't do their home work. This group if it is to be effective has to use all kinds of tactics. If it continues to ignore youth it will be stuck playing the man's game and losing. Finally as 1 always sum up Black people must become thinking people. Those who voted against our sister were not thinking Black people. Those who supported white candidates from the beginning (like Muskie) were not think- ing Black people. Those Black people who worked for white Terry when a sister needed footwork were not thinking Black people. If we are to be free and I wonder if we will, we must a nalyze, project, understand, and c alculate our moves. We must think in terms not only of what if I'm right but what happens to my people if I am wrong. We do not live in a world by ourselves, what one of us does usually affects all of us. We gon' pay for Saturday and don't think its all over yet. These same white people will come running just before the general election with a bag of crumb 6 for the Black vote. What is so bad is that they will get it, be- cause we have failed to get out of their bag. If we place our salvation in the ballot box then we have to vote, if there is no good around, then its the lesser of two evils (us- ually the slickest of two evils). We can play games if we want to but don't expect freedom to come from those games. A hint to the wiae is suf- ficient. A hint to an idiot usually makes him mad, which means sooner or later you have to kick his can. Writing is a way of influencing the way Black people see things. If at first thinking does not change the situation, I have no hang-ups with putting my foot where my typewriter is. I understand quite clearly that logic does not work on a mule or an idiot. rums ASS STANT BY ( JylOAfy mk CARNATION HOME SERVICE DIRECTOR Please the family with a casserole you can prepare ahead.
