I love this band!!!!!! I find it impossible to not dance during their shows. They have played in SLO quite a few times. Listen to them once and I guarantee I will see you there next time in the front row dancing.

http://www.myspace.com/togetherpangea

I was lucky enough to see this band on the night I turned 21, and it was the exact type of band I was trying to see. They played straight through the cops knocking at the door, leaving only flashing sirens to light the room. Keeping it local out of Santa Maria, check them out at http://www.myspace.com/prunusplum or at a rager near you

email us at [email protected] if you are interested in becoming a featured band

There’s nor-cal with its cold weather, sick cement parks and huge hill bombs, and there’s so-cal with its hot sun, sick spots, and fast-paced style, but what about those in the middle, those cent-cals? Not many people hear about what goes on in the middle. San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, Arroyo Grande, Morro Bay and Atascadero are no hot spots for skateboarding like Los Angeles and San Francisco, and nowhere near in size. But while the people up north are freezing their asses off skating their spots, and the people down south are getting sunburnt skating theirs, we on the central coast are enjoying our easy-going lifestyle, prime weather, and ridiculous scenery, all the while shredding our spots...

In January 2009, Monument Boardshop, a skate shop out of Arroyo Grande, CA released its first skate video. It featured both skaters and spots from these not so well known places. The rider lineup consisted of Keith Warter, Jef and Dmitri Tipay, Garett Chappell, Nick Walters, Shane Marriott, Austin Condon, Jamie Algert, Justin Martinez, and Ben Cabreana. The video was in the making for over a year and half, give or take 6 months (some footage is older than others). With all the torture, frustration, time, money, blood, scabs, bruises, beer, and everything else invested into it, to see the final production come together was well fucking worth it. Behind the lens was Mark McCracken and Shane Marriott, who not only filmed enough footage for his own full length part, but also made time to edit the entire film.

The Monument riders all fit together like fucking legos, but at the same time, each part clearly shows each riders own unique personality. Keith moves like hot butter on anything he skates. Father and Son, Jef and Dmitri, drop hammers in their backyard like they were still building the ramp. Garret throws down mind numbing trick to trick combos. Nick tears every tranny a second or third asshole. Shane says fuck it and charges, switch or regular, with gnarly speed and intensity. Austin mixes it up with some wallie variations, while Jamie’s got that springy pop and steezy board control. Justin has laid back style, making all his tricks look so effortless and smooth. Last in the lineup is Ben, who kills every spot you take him to, getting down with technical tricks, while blasting out hammers on spots you’d only dream of skating. Put simply, the Monument team kills it, so get off your ass, head over to Monument in AG, pick up a copy, and get mental...

How did you get into shooting skateboarding? Its actually pretty funny, I had this crappy fisheye that went on a videocamera, and I rigged it to work on my first camera, and I took some pictures of my friend Joel with it.. Thats what started all of it.

If you could go anywhere with anyone to shoot photos, where would it be and who with?Probably Jerry Hsu and I would want to go to Tokyo, I went this summer and there are some really cool spots, but I couldn’t find skaters.

Where can people find more of your photos? On my Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/vanorits/

Page 7: REALIZE ISSUE 1

When did you first become interested in photography?About two years ago, when I first started I wanted to do underwater photography.

What cameras do you own?Alot, but off the top of my head, Bronica sq-b, Graflex super speed graphic, Nikon fe2, Yashica t4, XA, Canonet ql-17, Olympus Pen...

Ay, to be real, skating is pretty effin ill. No matter how dank you are or how much poo you suck just riding a retarded piece of wood for no purpose other than potentially doming yourself makes you feel ill. This feeling is same and essential through ALL people who skate. It does not matter who you are, what you wear, or what board your beasting, as long as you feel like you just dominated this earth after you a landed a trick or even cruising that is the only thing of importance. Let me just tell you right now, you can stop and put this zine down, if you’re a.) riding a skate solely to impress chicks b.) hating on any other cat you see skating just because he “looks like a f@g” c.) hating on anyone or anything in this else in this uncertain world and d.) possibly if you still push mongo. Listen buttcheeks, the fact that you get to go out on a primal sunny day, ride your skate wherever you can, and cruise the shit out of this world, you live a pretty ridiculous/fortunate life. Some people are aware of the fact, that the world we live in today is pretty absurd and most of the time you can’t control anything. But at least for maybe three split seconds of your life can you control a plank of wood that is oscillating beneath your feet. To me, skating is dank, not because of how you look or what tricks you beast, but because of the vibey goodness of just rolling.

You’ve lived your whole life in San Luis Obispo, what’s your favorite thing about it?The weed, hah no seriously, probably the fact that I can walk anywhere and I don’t need to worry about being shanked or stabbed. Driving on the backroads is cool too.

What’s your favorite music to skate to?Anything with a nice flow and drums. A good beat. Anything you hear on the radio.

If you could pick one band that everyone should know about, who would it be?Pink floyd, they are one of the most influential bands. They’re the most psychedelic and creative.

Who do you wish you could skate with the most and where?Mark Gonzalez, I bet he has plenty of interesting stories. I’d skate with him anywhere he wants to take me. Hah

Favorite part of all time?Im trying to think of a part where the music goes perfect with the skating. Probably Heath Kirchart in Sight Unseen when he skates to Knights in White Satin. That was dope.

Who inspires your skating the most?Cairo Foster, ive always had my name at the top of my head when I think if favorite skaters

Favorite trick to to do?Nollie flips, they are the funnest for me to do. the flip, and catch, ahhh. Not frontside flips because ive been trying forever and their the hardest for me.

high speed nollie flip

Sometimes the best trips are the ones with no plans. fresh off convincing myself I failed my final final, i packed my car up with a few days of supplies and headed south. I picked up a couple of friends with similarly looking tattoos and we headed to the mecca of skateboarding: Los Angeles. We had an awesome tour guide steve, that lead us around his old stomping grounds in the valley and then proceeded to adventure deeper into the city. After everyone had eaten at the local jon’s we were ready to shred. Friends may not always be around so its good to have fun together while you still can. Thanks to everyone that helped out on this trip.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PROJECTS YOUR WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?I don’t get a lot of commissioned work at all really, and the ones I do get, I’m never really super excited about, but I think you really have to start somewhere, and I mean if anyone at all once some of my work, I am always flattered, and very appreciative, so I do what I can. As for the t shirts that I made designs for in the past, I have only ever seen one printed, which I have a copy of, it seems every bad or clothing company I do something for, never get around to printing anything of mine.. sucks!

Lately I have been doing little trades with other artists that I respect and admire, and have become pretty good friends with, you should definitely check these guys out, major, major talent (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamsandwich/) and (http://www.flickr.com/photos/coryseverartwork/) I take a lot more joy and pride in trades and swaps as apposed to commissioned work, I feel there’s a lot more soul and connection involved.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR WORK?I don’t have a .com website currently, but if anyone would like to have a browse or get in contact with my, you can find my work at http://www.flickr.com/photos/oatmealart http://oatmealcrumbs.blogspot.com and I frequently post little mock-ups on www.emptees.com!

Favorite person to skate with?My brother he always pushes me to skate better, I try to keep up with him.

Any thoughts on being sponsored? Free stuff is always cool.

What would you be doing if you weren’t skating?I couldn’t really imagine doing anything else. There is no greater satisfaction than landing a trick.

Describe the feeling of landing a trick.Orgasmic. Your body is torn and your brain is fucking with you. It’s like holding your breathe and then your body finally gets to relax.

Page 11: REALIZE ISSUE 1

WHEN DO YOU WORK BEST?I tend to work best late at night, usually from around 11pm onwards, I’ve started to draw at 2am before and didnt go to sleep until it was perfect, this was around 4:30-5am, if I don’t like how some lines are looking I will scrap it and trace it over and make sure I nail it the second time, I’m very particular.

FAVOURITE PLACE TO SKATE?Trying to name my favourite place to skate is really difficult, as the UK is pretty terrible for skateboarding if I’m honest. Right now I live in England, for school, but I’m originally from wales, and around here there isn’t much to skate as it’s sort of a small village/town, there one small skate park but it’s boring, so from time to time myself and a few friends will drive to maybe Crawely skatepark which is around 45 minutes away, it’s usually outdoor parks I end up skating, as theres not that much good street around, but skating in my home town is a lot better, theres more parks, closer to my house and a little more street spots, some nice marble benches dotted around, and just a few nice spots to cruise around.

FAVOURITE WEBSITE/BLOG?My favourite websites would have to be youtube, theberrics.com fecalface.com and amazon! as for blogs.. hmm I think I’d have to say http://blogsecret.tumblr.com/ http://mozzdaily.tumblr.com/ and http://onkelallan.blogspot.com/ I think you should definitely check some of those out, very very interesting.

VICE?Oh man.. my vice? .. as lame as this sounds, I think it would have to be Skate 2! as unexciting as that is, I seem to play it at least once a day, even if it’s just for 15 minutes, I never seem to play any other video game!my friends get so annoyed sometimes, like “awww c’mon mannnn” I mean I love call of duty as much as the next guy, but I could waste hours on Skate 2.. god forbid if a Skate 3 is ever released!!

Say something in Hungarian.én Magyarország - I’m hungary

What do you want to see in the future from Realize?More issues to come and get kids noticed, show san luis local skating.

Any last words of wisdom? To any kids learning to skateboard, becoming or have been. Don’t give up it will get better. Don’t worry about the quarterback giving you a hard time you greasy skaterats.

Yes it is about that time… the city San Luis Obispo has finally decided it’s time to get a new concrete skatepark! Finally, a fully equipped skate-heaven complete with all the whoopdy-dos, full pipes, rocks, and bowls you’d ever want to shred. It has already been designed by Zak Wormhoudt and you can check out the full plans at http://skateparks.com/envision.php?nid=153 There’s no set date for construction or opening, but all I can tell you is it’s really expensive and we can use all the funds we can get. If you would like to donate some money please… So it may be a while until you’re swimming in pools and surfing concrete but just remember, skateboarding is all what you make it, so keep building spots and skate-adventuring!!!

words by SEAN BASALYGA

I found this super swell artist on Flickr and instantly fell in love with his art. He’s freaken’ rad, so read this interview and check out his work.

AGE LOCATION SCHOOL?I turned 21 in March, I currently live in Farnham (for school) , United Kingdom

FAVOURITE MATERIALS?My favourite materials are pretty much just pen and paper, probably because that’s all I know how to use.. ha ha, but I’m in love with it. I’ve drawing in this weird tanned and dated parchment paper recently, it takes to ink really well.

ARTISTIC PROCESS?When I sit down to draw, I usually don’t really plan much, I feel if everything is too planned, nothing will come out right, never force it. I could just be listening to music, or see a quote or phrase somewhere, or maybe just how I am feeling at a particular time, and I will get a sudden urge to draw, and as soon as I get out my paper, I’ll put on some music ( usually the smiths, I would set myself on fire for you, small leaks sink ships..) and and image will just form, I’ll try out a few ideas first, always starting with the shape of a face, and then a nose.. it all kind of just falls together, I just draw whatever I think is cool, and just hope other people will dig it.

Coalition is going to hold a silent auction with rad art to raise money for the new San Luis Obispo skatepark. Go check it out during the November

Art After Dark. Let’s make this skatepark happen! See you there!
