However should the weather be unsuitable for flying, the ‘fly-in’ will be moved to either of the two following Saturdays. Have you ever been a guinea pig? At the moment, I am trying out a service called ‘Fuss Free Phones’. I simply pick up the phone provided and ask to be connected to a person named in my directory. Jottings September 2013

Welcome back to the first of the Autumn magazines after our two month’s break. Many of you will have been abroad to where you could rely on warm – while others have stayed in Britain and enjoyed long hot days. Wherever you have been I hope you enjoyed yourselves. I went away in June when we all wore our winter jackets - but we enjoyed looking round glorious gardens and historical castles.

Thank heaven most of the hedges around the village have now been cut. I swear the brambles were growing at a foot a day. This is hardly surprising as the long period of rain we had in the winter and ‘spring’ has caused plants to flourish – I have never known my lavender to be so large.

Sir Frank has enjoyed the recent hot weather so much that he has decided to move to Barbados. Thank you, Sir Frank, for your quirky, ‘tongue in cheek’ observations on life in Rearsby. We wish him well.

Because of the break we were not able to warn you of the ‘fly in’of Auster aircraft on Saturday 24th August. Members of the Auster Club will fly their planes into the field behind the factory on Gaddesby Lane behind the Rearsby Business park.

The down side was transferring the names and numbers to their directory. Fortunately my son Paul did this for me. Should this experiment prove successful it will be a real help, particularly to blind people such as myself.

I would like to thank the team for producing the last magazine, in my absence, didn’t they do well.

As you are aware Rob Wilbourn has looked after the forthcoming events and diary each month, however he has now changed his e-mail address. As all the team has access to the Rearsby scene group e-mail address, please send all future relevant information to [email protected], and he will be able to pick it up.

I have contacted the postmaster at Syston to enquire about the resumption of the Tuesday service in Rearsby. He said he was waiting for a decision from the Post Office. My impression is that the service will never be resumed.

We are pleased to hear that the final stage of the church heating is due to begin with the installation of two heaters in the north aisle and one in the chancel. The

unreliable and ugly gas heaters will be removed. The two heaters already installed in the south aisle have proved efficient and unobtrusive.

We apologise to our gardening correspondent for the omission of their article. We know how much time and research goes into all her articles.

I was surprised to hear of the by election for a new representative to Charnwood. The last three members were there for years including Bob Weston who became Mayor.

We welcome yet another regular to the Village Hall, Helen Maddam’s Slimming World. Looking at the diary and the table of regular bookings in the Village Hall we can look forward to a busy autumn.

Notes on the Parish Council Meeting held on the 1st Aug at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.

Present; CouncillorsPeter French (chair), Ian Christie-Smith, Martin Cooke, Janette Jones, Simon Chenery and Kath Chritie-Smith (standing in for clerk Sue Norledge.)Apologies, John Blankley, Sue Norledge, Brian Geeson P.C.S.O and Steve Hampson In Attendance, 5 members of the public. Also in attendance was Mr James Poland, James introduced himself to the meeting as the prospective Borough Councillor (Con) for the Wreake Area. This vacancy has been declared, due to the resignation of Mathew Blaine as reported in the local press. A by-election will take place on September 12th.Progress on Repairs & Maintenance.

1. Hedges on Station Road have been trimmed, with noticeable benefits for road users and pedestrians.

2. An opportunity exists for general maintenance work for the parish council, this will be on a casual basis, to be agreed upon, and an advert will follow shortly.

Rural Broadband Scheme. Progress on this important item continues to be painfully slow.Progress on Children’s Play Area Refurbishment. Councillor Janette Jones has continued to work on this project with admirable tenacity. The current financial position is now further advanced, as the final stages come to within reach.Footpath No 173. The parish council has made its response to this suggestion, and firm proposals are awaited.Flooding. Concern over flooding is still high on the agenda for Brookside and Mill Road residents.

1. There still remains a lack of clarity, regarding areas of responsibility in brook and bank clearing.

2. A resident has complained that in certain adverse weather situations, with the brook in a flood state, this water is flowing into the sewer, with the result, that sewage can be seen on the road.

Defibrillator. It was agreed to seek quotations, for purchase of such an item, a suggested location that has merit, is attaching the equipment to the outside wall of the Village Hall.Village Landscape. The Parish Council, take note! Of the continuing applications to remove trees from within the village, in particular some prize specimens. These actions do have the effect, of changing the landscape permanently. “Do we really need these changes?” The convent is in the process of purchasing 3 silver birch trees. They have most generously offered 1 of them to the village.Caught Reporter.

News from St Michael & All Angels July/August 2013

It has been a very busy Summer term at St Michaels. Sports Day was a great success. The children across school are split into four “houses” named after Leicestershire/Leicester city parks. This year Watermead won Sports Day overall. There have been several other sporting events through out the term including an Orienteering competition, a multi sports event at Loughborough University and several football matches. This culminated in a Sports presentation evening, which

celebrated the efforts of the netball, football and cross country teams over the past year. The children have also been on various trips which have linked into their learning. Class 1 (our youngest children) have been learning about animals and therefore a visit to Twycross Zoo was essential! The children in Class1 have also been using the grounds of Rearsby convent for Forest schools. The children have been measuring, digging, sawing and developing key skills such as working collaboratively together in an outdoor environment. We have seen the children grow in confidence and self esteem and we thank the Convent for allowing us to use their grounds. Class 2 have been learning all about Richard 111 and had a great trip to Bosworth Battlefield. The children have really enjoyed finding out about Richard and his skeleton. As part of their recycling and environmental topic Class 3 visited Snibston Discovery park where they created wind turbines. Class 4 have been particularly busy. We have recently made a link with Our Lady’s Convent School in Loughborough. The children in Year 5 visited OLCS for a bridge building afternoon. Earlier in the term the class had a Geography field trip to Bradgate Park as they were studying rivers. More recently the children have been learning all about Pompeii – a subject that has really interested the children. The class were lucky enough to go to the cinema for a screening of Pompeii Live from the British Museum. In the last weeks of term we welcomed our new children who will be joining us in September and the Year 6’s led the Leavers Service in the church before dropping a decorated, personalised stone in the brook. Our SAT’s results have been excellent again this year with 100% achieving Level 4 (the national expected level) or above in Reading, Writing and Maths. We were particularly proud of our Maths results as they were the best the school had ever had. Looking forward to the new academic year we would love to start a school choir – however as yet we do not have a member of staff who can play the piano. If you are able to play the piano and would able to volunteer approximately 30-40 minutes a week either before or after school – please contact either myself or the school office.

Wishing you all a happy and restful Summer.

Jottings of a Happy GardenerIn late August we still have plenty of colour in the garden. The combination of warmth and rain has meant that the flowers have been wonderful this year. All the beds and borders are very full leaving little room for the weeds. I have started taking cuttings of pelargoniums and fuchsias and am also collecting seeds. This year I am experimenting by sowing some seeds when they are still fresh and green, and saving some to dry and plant next spring. All the shrubs have put on a lot of growth and I have started giving them a good cut back. The vegetables have all done well. The shallots have been lifted and pickled and cauliflowers, broccoli, courgettes and broad beans are in the freezer. We have also had a good crop of onions, runner beans, tomatoes and cucumbers.Last year we had no cooking apples but this year the tree is loaded. The blackcurrants and red currants have produced well but the gooseberry bush died over the winter. I found two small self-seeded bushes, and hope that they will eventually produce fruit.I have seen articles in the press about the shortage of both bees and butterflies but we have had masses of both in our garden this summer. Perhaps this is due to having plenty of insect friendly flowers.Enjoy your gardening.

The Rearsby Slimming World group is coming back to the village as a morning group for the area.

We are so pleased to be able to announce that Slimming World is coming back to Rearsby and that we can offer this fantastic morning group. When the evening group initially moved from Rearsby to Sileby there was always the hope that one day the group would return to the village where it all started 3 years ago.

Helen Joined Slimming World in 2009 to shift her baby weight, and lost 3 and half stone by following the Extra Easy Plan, she said “I couldn’t believe when I joined that I would be able to eat chips and currys and lose weight, my daughter now aged 5 loves the food I cook as it is just everyday foods like spaghetti Bolognese and roast dinners and since extra easy came out which means I can now eat meat, fish, chicken, potatoes, rice and pasta all on the same plate it has revolutionised the way we eat as a family and are never hungry.” This new morning group will be starting on Wednesday 4th September at 9.30am at the Rearsby Village Hall. “I can’t wait to see members old and new and am thrilled to be back in my own community” For more information Helen can be contacted on 07949123898 and would love to meet you on 4th September.

At Your Service

June North and her son Stephen have lived in Queniborough for 26 years. June was a legal secretary where she met her husband and Stephen was a trainee manager with Azda, when she heard through work from the previous owner of Queniborough newsagents, Mark, that the business was for sale. The premises had been a shop for 80 years, initially selling bicycles and for the previous 40 years a newsagents.

Although quite a different venture the couple were confident that they could make a success of the venture. So much so that they immediately began extending, building the shop around them as June says. They doubled the size of the shop so now it is like the Tardis. People are often surprised by how large the interior is. They also widened the range of goods and services on offer. The most recent service introduced is the sale of all National Lottery tickets and June and Stephen are keenly awaiting a big winner!

Bread, lemon and strawberry doughnuts, chocolate orange muffins, Belgian buns, iced fingers and egg custard tarts supplied by Cuisine De France are baked fresh daily. Filled baguettes are available in 11 different varieties including ham, beef, pork and chicken tikka, egg mayo and corned beef mixes.

Old fashioned sweets are a feature. The couple have extended the range to 280 jars plus seasonal specials such as Bonfire toffee and toffee apples. Filled gift boxes are available at times such as Christmas, Valentine’s day, birthdays and anniversaries ranging from £3.99 to £20 for a large jar. Sweets include 16 different toffees, 10 different cough sweets, 26 different chocolates, 26 boiled sweets and 16 different liquorices. The special children’s range includes bonbons, jazzes, milk bottles, fried eggs, fizzy cola bottles and the early teens’ favourite, sour water melon slices!

June and Stephen manage all the work between them, working from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and half day until 1 p.m. at weekends. June says the only day they take off is Christmas day but this year it is different because Stephen is getting married to his fiancé Sally on New Year’s Eve! 6 paperboys and girls work on weekdays and 10 – 11 at weekends because of the weight of the papers. On Monday to Friday 420 morning papers are delivered and 20 evening ones. 600 are delivered on Saturday and 500 on Sunday. Villages covered are Queniborough, Rearsby, East Goscote, Thorpe Satchville, Twyford, South Croxton, Barkby and Beeby.

So, order your papers here! I can personally vouch for S. and J. News’ approachability, courtesy and reliability. Nothing is too much trouble.

Rearsby WI Report July/August 2013

For our July meeting we took advantage of the lovely weather and organised a Scavenger Hunt around the village and members were given the opportunity to become quite imaginative with their finds. For the less adventurous there was an indoor quiz and substantia grisea (grey matter) was used in abundance.

There have been two group trips recently, that several members took advantage of, one to Bletchley Park and one to the Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas. Both trips had excellent feedback.

We are looking forward to a trip to the theatre next month and Blenheim Palace in November which is also hosting a Living Craft Fair.

The speaker for our September meeting is Malcolm Britton on ‘The Story of Brooksby’. If you are able to come along and we hope you can, please be aware that we have moved the venue to The Convent for this month, as the Village Hall is hosting a By-election that day.
