Reason to Believe Seven Signs from the Gospel of John

In the Gospel of John, Jesus performs seven significant miracles that John refers to as “signs”. Each sign is meant to direct us to something important

about the identity of Jesus, and to give us a reason to believe in Him. Whether you’re a Christian or not, we invite you to join us as we marvel at the life and

ministry of Jesus Christ, and, we hope and pray, give all of us a ‘Reason to Believe’.

SERMONS

1. Water into Wine – John 2:1–11 2. Sickness into Health – John 4:43–54 3. Life into Dead Limbs – John 5:1–18 4. Feeding the Masses – John 6:1–14 5. Walking on Water – John 6:16–29 6. Sight to the Blind – John 9:1–41 7. Life to the Dead – John 11:1–44

The Gospel of John The first four books of the New Testament are commonly called Gospels. These books aim to give readers a historical and theological account of the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Among the four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—John’s Gospel stands out as unique. John omits much of the material that can be found in the other three Gospels, including the nativity scene, Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, many of Jesus’ parables, much of Jesus’ teaching on the kingdom of God, and a detailed account of the Lord’s Supper. Moreover, John includes material that the others do not; in fact, 92% of material in John is unique to his Gospel. This includes the “I am” sayings of Jesus, the farewell discourse, and the seven ‘signs’ performed by Jesus. It is to these seven ‘signs’ that we will turn our attention in this series.

What is a ‘sign’? John records only seven miracles of Jesus, which he intentionally refers to as “signs”. These signs are significant displays of power that point beyond themselves (as all signs do) to deeper realities about Jesus’ identity and mission. The signs are:

Changing water into wine (2:1-12) Healing the official’s son (4:43-54) Healing a disabled man (5:1-17) Feeding the five thousand (6:1-14) Walking on water (6:15-25) Healing a man born blind (9:1-41) Raising Lazarus from the dead (11:1-46)

Why did Jesus perform ‘signs’? Towards the end of his Gospel, John shares his purpose in recording these seven signs: “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:30-31) John has selected these seven signs in particular so that his readers—then and now—will believe that Jesus is the Messiah (or Christ), the Son of God, and that by believing they (we) may have life in His name. As Anthony Selvaggio explains, “Like the highway signs we see every day, the signs of John’s Gospel point beyond themselves to a greater reality. The signs of John’s Gospel are not the destination; they are directions to the greater truth about who Jesus is and what He has done… so that we may confess that Jesus is the Christ, the very Son of God.” Individually, each sign tells us something important about who Jesus is, and collectively they serve to convince us that He is the glorious Son of God. This means, as we explore these signs we should expect them to inform us and convince us of Jesus’ identity, and, we are praying, give all of us a ‘Reason to Believe’.

Water into Wine John 2:1–11

Share Life Spend 20-30 minutes checking in with each other. Share what has been new, challenging, or encouraging in your life in the last few weeks.

Pursue God Read John 2:1–11 aloud

John describes this event as the “first of the signs” (v.11) performed by Jesus. What is the difference between a sign and a piece of art? How does this help us to interpret this story correctly? What is the problem at the wedding (vv.1–3) and what did Jesus’ mother think he could do about it (v.3)? Why? Consider Luke 1:26–38 Is Jesus’ response to his mother surprising (v.4)? Why? What does Jesus mean when he says: “My hour has not yet come”? Consider John 7:30; 8:20; 12:23, 27; 13:1; and 17:1

Context: Weddings in the first century carried immense social significance; even more so than they do today. They were entire-community events and often lasted seven days. The quality of the hospitality provided was vital to a family’s social standing. In fact, a failure in this area—such as running out of wine—could bring great public shame on a family; even a potential lawsuit.

Page 9: Reason to Believe - Bray Park Community Church – Jesus ... · John records only seven miracles of Jesus, which he intentionally refers to as “signs”. These signs are significant

9

Jesus ultimate purpose, the “hour” for which he came, was to go to the cross for the salvation of sinners and to open the way into the kingdom of God. With this in mind, discuss the following questions: What is the significance of the wine? Consider the following: In the Old Testament, wine symbolized peace, prosperity, and blessing from God (see Genesis 27:28; Psalm 104:15; Proverbs 3:10), and was associated with a time of future abundance in the kingdom of God (see Isaiah 25:6; Amos 9:13–14; Hosea 2:21–22; Joel 3:18). How does this help us to understand why Jesus produced wine of such large quantity (600+ litres) and high quality (vv.9–10)? Consider John 10:10 Why is it significant that the wine was placed in jars used for “ceremonial washing” (v.6)? What does this tell us about why Jesus came? Consider Hebrews 1:3; 9:11–14; 1 John 1:9; Titus 2:14. How does this sign reveal the glory of Jesus and show that He is the Son of God? What was the response of Jesus’ disciples to this sign (v.11)? What is your response?

Serve Others The Bible uses the imagery of a bountiful feast on numerous occasions to paint a picture of the abundant life offered by Jesus (both now and in the future). Perhaps your group could host a dinner feast and invite others who aren’t part of your group?

Pray Always How can the group pray for you? Spend some time praying for one another.

For further study: Why is it significant that the first of Jesus’ signs takes place at a wedding? Consider Ephesians 5:31–32 and the overarching storyline of the Bible, particularly how the story begins (Genesis 2:18–25) and ends (Revelation 21:1–5). What might this tell us about why Jesus came?

Sickness into Health John 4:43–54

Share Life What has been new, challenging, or encouraging in your life since last time the group met? Spend 20-30 minutes checking in with each other.

Pursue God Read John 4:43–54 aloud What did this official already seem to know about Jesus (vv.46–47)? How would he have come to this knowledge? Consider John 2:23–25 and 4:45 How does this help us to understand Jesus’ rebuke in verse 48? Who exactly is Jesus rebuking in this verse? Is this kind of faith (faith that desires miraculous cures but does not truly trust Jesus) still around today? In what way? How would you respond to someone who said: “I’d believe in Jesus if only he would do a miracle for me or right in front of me”? Consider Luke 16:19–31 What do we learn about the official from his actions in verses 46–47? What characterises his faith at this point in the story? Have you ever been at a similar point of desperation before Jesus? If you’re willing, share your story.

Page 13: Reason to Believe - Bray Park Community Church – Jesus ... · John records only seven miracles of Jesus, which he intentionally refers to as “signs”. These signs are significant

13

How does Jesus respond to the request from the official, and how does the official respond to Jesus’ promise (v.50)? What does this short verse tell us about the nature of faith? How can you apply this truth to your life? How does the faith of the official progress throughout the story (vv.50–53)? What is the response of the family to this sign (v.53)? What is your response to this sign? How does this sign reveal the glory of Jesus and show that He is the Son of God? Consider the following: “On the surface, the boy is alive and well. But deeper, the whole family have come to know Jesus the life-giver. They know he can give live physically, and it’s a sign that he can give life spiritually.”

Serve Others How does this story inspire your group to serve others? Spend some time discussing practical ideas about how to do that.

Pray Always How can the group pray for you? Spend some time praying for one another.

For further study: This story obviously has a wonderful ending; the boy is healed and the family come to faith in Jesus. But what about those times in life that don’t work out this way. How should we handle it when we ask Jesus for something important and he says “no”? How does Jesus’ experience in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36–46; especially vv. 39, 42) and upon the cross (Matthew 27:45–46) help us?

Life into Dead Limbs John 5:1–18

Share Life What has been new, challenging, or encouraging in your life since last time the group met? Spend 20-30 minutes checking in with each other.

Pursue God Read John 5:1–18 aloud

If you were in this disabled man’s position, how do you think you would have responded to Jesus’ question in verse 6 (“Do you want to get well?”)? Why do you think Jesus asked him such a seemingly obvious question? What strikes you about Jesus’ response to the disabled man (v.8)? What stands out to you about the actions of this man following his healing (vv. 11, 13, 15)? Does he seem appreciative or changed by what Jesus has done for him? Why or why not? How can his example serve as a warning to us? What is the real, deeper issue for this healed man (v.14)? What lessons can we learn from this?

Context: “Bethesda” means “house of mercy,” a fitting term given the desperate state of the people lying there in hope of a miracle cure. The belief was that an angel would periodically stir the waters of the pool, triggering its healing powers for the first person to enter the stirred water (see John 5:4). People who were desperately ill thus waited by this pool day after day, hoping for the opportunity to be healed. Interestingly, for many years the site of this pool was lost, until the late 19th century when it was discovered and excavated. The pool is located in the northern part of the Temple Mount, near St. Stephen’s Gate, which is the site of the Sheep Gate mentioned in this passage.

Page 17: Reason to Believe - Bray Park Community Church – Jesus ... · John records only seven miracles of Jesus, which he intentionally refers to as “signs”. These signs are significant

17

The blind, the lame, and the paralyzed gathered at this pool in search of healing. How do you see people in our culture seeking healing or ways to reduce or eliminate pain in their lives? How does Jesus offer ‘healing’ that is far more compelling and lasting than anything else? What role (if any) should prayer for physical healing play in the life of God’s people? What Scriptures would you use to support your position? Do you think there are ever occasions when instances of suffering are the direct result of a specific sin? Is this what Jesus is suggesting in verse 14? Why or why not? Consider John 9:3; Luke 13:1–5; Acts 5:1–11; and 1 Corinthians 11:30 What initially caused the religious leaders to get upset at Jesus (v.16)? What, however, was the deeper reason they sought to silence him (vv.17–18)? Why does Jesus’ equality with God upset them so deeply? How does it affect you? How does this sign reveal the glory of Jesus and show that He is the Son of God?

Serve Others What practical ways could your group help to alleviate the suffering of the sick in our church community? In our wider community?

Pray Always How can the group pray for you? Spend some time praying for one another.

Feeding the Masses John 6:1–14

Share Life What has been new, challenging, or encouraging in your life since last time the group met? Spend 20-30 minutes checking in with each other.

Pursue God Read John 6:1–14 aloud

Why did the crowds follow Jesus across the Sea of Galilee (v.2)? How does this help explain what happens in John 6:60–66? Does this still happen today? How? What is the significance of the abundant leftovers (vv. 12–13)? What point is John trying to make? (Remember the abundance and quality of wine in John 2:1–11?) Read Deuteronomy 18:15, 18. Why do you think the crowds concluded that Jesus was the Prophet spoken about by Moses? Why did they want to crown him right then and there? Why did Jesus flee the crowds and refuse to be crowned by them right then and there? What does this tell us about why Jesus came and how the crowds misunderstood his mission? Consider Matthew 20:25–28 One author says about the crowd in this story: They have gone from viewing Jesus as an all-in free healthcare solution (v.2) to an aggressive military ruler (vv.14–15). What do these two misunderstandings regarding the nature of Jesus’ kingship look like in our society and churches today?

Context: This is the only miracle during Jesus’ ministry that is recorded in all four Gospels. Only in John, however, does the miracle point to the discourse in which Jesus himself is the ultimate bread of life (John 6:25–29).

Page 21: Reason to Believe - Bray Park Community Church – Jesus ... · John records only seven miracles of Jesus, which he intentionally refers to as “signs”. These signs are significant

21

What truth about Jesus does this sign point us to? Consider John 6:35–58. What promises does Jesus make (in these verses) to those who will come to him? In what other ways (apart from Jesus) do we (or people around us) seek satisfaction to ‘feed’ our souls? What does Jesus mean when he talks about “eating his flesh and drinking his blood” (John 6:53–58)? Why does he use such a graphic metaphor? Has this metaphor challenged or helped you in the way you think about your faith in Jesus?

Serve Others What are some practical ways you can show others in your life the satisfaction that Christ gives you? At home? At work? At play? What are some ways you could do that as a group?

Pray Always How can the group pray for you? Spend some time praying for one another.

Walking on Water

John 6:16–29

Share Life What has been new, challenging, or encouraging in your life since last time the group met? Spend 20-30 minutes checking in with each other.

Pursue God Read John 6:16–29 aloud The disciples are in a boat on the Sea of Galilee, it’s the middle of the night and a violent storm breaks out. They are terrified. But why exactly are they so frightened (v.19)? Put yourself in their shoes: How do you think you would have responded?

Jesus speaks to the disciples from out of the storm: “It is I”, which could be translated literally as “I am”. Read Exodus 3:13–14 and discuss the implications. What happens once Jesus enters the boat (v.21)? How does this stand in stark contrast to the earlier predicament of the disciples? What point is John trying to make? Consider Job 9:8 and Psalm 107:29–30 Have you ever gone through a difficult season of life and found the presence and power of Jesus to be a great comfort? If you’re willing, share your story. Why is the crowd (once again) looking for Jesus (vv.22–29)? How have those in the crowd misread the signs Jesus has performed?

For further study: Light and darkness are significant themes in the Gospel of John. In this story, the darkness of the night and the absence of Jesus are powerfully linked. For more see John 1:5; 3:19; 8:12; 12:35, 46; 20:1

Page 25: Reason to Believe - Bray Park Community Church – Jesus ... · John records only seven miracles of Jesus, which he intentionally refers to as “signs”. These signs are significant

25

When you think about Jesus, do you feel awe (a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear and wonder)? Why or why not? How does this story enlarge our view of Jesus? “When we fear Jesus, we will not fear anything or anyone else.” Discuss. (Consider Proverbs 9:10) Are you going through any ‘storms of life’ at the moment? How does the presence and power of Jesus reassure you and change the way you approach them? How does this sign reveal the glory of Jesus and show that He is the Son of God?

Serve Others Next time someone shares with you a challenge or a ‘storm’ they are going through, why not offer to pray for them? In fact, why not start now? Take a few moments to confess your struggles and fears and then pray for one another.

Pray Always How can the group pray for you? Spend some time praying for one another.

Sight to the Blind

John 9:1–41

Share Life What has been new, challenging, or encouraging in your life since last time the group met? Spend 20-30 minutes checking in with each other.

Pursue God Read John 9:1–41 aloud

What is the assumption of the disciples in verse 2? Have you ever held or encountered a view similar to this? The disciples ask what caused this man’s blindness, but Jesus tells them the purpose of it: to display the works of God (v.3). What does this mean? What does it not mean? Can you think of any other stories or examples of this truth in the Bible? C.S. Lewis said: “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” Lewis saw pain as a ‘gift’, that is, a means to move us to God and to rouse our faith. Do you agree? Can pain be a gift used by God for our good? How? Have you ever seen or experienced this? What “works” were required of Jesus while he was on earth? See verse 5 and John 1:1–14. What “works” does God require of us while we are on earth? See John 6:29 Can you think of any reason why Jesus would heal the blind man in the way he does (vv.6–12), as opposed to a direct command like he does on other occasions (i.e., John 5:1–9)?

Context: At the immediate level, this story is about physical blindness and the healing Jesus gives (vv.1–12). But at a deeper level, it is about spiritual blindness and the spiritual sight Jesus offers (vv.35–41).

Page 29: Reason to Believe - Bray Park Community Church – Jesus ... · John records only seven miracles of Jesus, which he intentionally refers to as “signs”. These signs are significant

29

Compare the spiritual sight of the Pharisees to that of the formerly blind man in verses 13–34. What is the difference? Why is this the case? The Pharisees teach us the great and real danger of religious pride. What is religious pride? What are some ‘symptoms’ of it? How can we guard ourselves against it? As we reflect on this story, what should we expect to see in our lives as those who have ‘seen’ Jesus for who he is and follow him as our Lord? How does Jesus’ differing treatment of the ex-blind man and the religiously proud Pharisees reveal his character? How does it reveal the type of attitude required to enter the kingdom of God? How does this comfort or challenge you?

Serve Others One important element of sharing our faith in Jesus is responding when people ask questions. What are some good ways to respond to questions about suffering and evil? i.e., How could a good God allow people to be born blind?

Pray Always How can the group pray for you? Spend some time praying for one another.

Life to the Dead

John 11:1–44

Context: The raising of Lazarus represents the final and ultimate “sign” of Jesus in John’s Gospel. This spectacular miracle (recorded only by John) anticipates Jesus’ own resurrec-tion and reveals Jesus as “the resurrection and the life” (11:25). The raising of Lazarus also serves as a final event triggering the Jewish leaders’ resolve to have Jesus arrested and tried for blasphemy (11:45–57).

Share Life What has been new, challenging, or encouraging in your life since last time the group met? Spend 20-30 minutes checking in with each other. Also, briefly share one way in which God has been at work in your life through this series.

Pursue God Read John 11:1–44 aloud What stands out to you in the way Jesus responds after hearing the news that his good friend Lazarus had passed away (vv.4–7)? What does Jesus mean when he says: “I am the resurrection and the life” (v.25)? How can Jesus say “everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die” (v.26) when believers die all the time—including Lazarus, who would have eventually died once again? What does he mean?

For further study: Life is a significant theme in John’s Gospel. To believe in Jesus is to live, for Jesus is life. “Life” in its fullest sense in the Bible, and as used here in John, does not simply mean “existence”; it conveys fullness of life, the life for which we were made and which we can experience in Christ. That life begins when we become a Christian, and though we continue to live physically, our real life is now hidden with Christ in God. In that sense eternal life begins not when we die but when we become a Christian, albeit that that life is interrupted by the painful and horrible realities of our physical death. See John 3:6, 14–16; 4:10, 14; 5:21, 26–27; 6:35, 57, 63, 68; 8:51; 10:9–10; 14:6 (Josh Moody)

Verse 33 tells us that Jesus was “deeply moved in spirit and troubled” at the scene before him. In the original language, the phrase suggests Jesus was not just sad but angrily upset. Why would Jesus have reacted in this way? How can Jesus’ reaction serve as a comfort to us? What do Jesus’ tears reveal about his character (v.35)? How do they change the way you feel about Jesus or relate to him? What would you say is the attitude of our society towards death? What is your attitude towards death? How does this story help us to develop a proper, Christian attitude towards death? Consider also 1 Corinthians 15:55; 1 Thessalonians 4:13; and Philippians 1:21–26 We’re told that Jesus loved Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha (v.5), and yet this tragedy still befalls them. Describe a time when you felt God was distant or absent and your prayers went unanswered. What were you expecting and hoping from God? How has this affected your belief that God is there and he can be trusted? How does this story help you to see that God is near to us, even in the midst of our trials and tragedies? How does this sign reveal the glory of Jesus and show that He is the Son of God? Has this series given you a reason to believe (or deepen your belief) in Jesus? Why or why not? What areas of your life has this series highlighted that need to be surrendered to Jesus? How can your group help you?

Serve Others Have 1-2 members describe a time when they were able to serve a friend or family member grieving significant loss or faced with a very difficult circumstance. Then reflect on how you can better support those who are grieving in the future.

Pray Always How can the group pray for you? Spend some time praying for one another.
