CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA COMMUNITY PLANNING & BUILDING DEPARTMENT

INTEROFFICE MEMO

Rob Mullane, AICP, Director of Community Planning and Building

May 6, 2014

Code Compliance Summary Report

During this reporting period (through 4/24/14), City Code Compliance staff fielded a total of 51 code compliance requests. A total of 26 active cases were closed over this same time period. For this calendar year, 145 code compliance requests have been received, and 94 of these cases have been closed.

Of the requests logged this month, nearly all of these (90%) were followed-up on with an initial investigation within 2 business days.

TRENDS: The number of code compliance requests was 3 8% lower than the previous month. The number of requests fluctuates from month to month. The most common types of requests continue to involve repmts of excessively-bright lighting, unpermitted signage, unpermitted construction or landscaping, and Right-of-Way encroachments. Signage concerns have been a recent focus of code compliance efforts.

NOTES: City staff will work with merchants displaying interior sh-ing lights and courtyard or other outside area lighting that could be considered decorative, rather than holiday lighting to outline steps required to permit such lighting through a Design Review Permit. Staffwill also work to ensure that merchants are aware of the City's sign regulations and the need to obtain a sign permit prior to installation.
