ONE OF THE MAJOR ARGUMENTSproffered for building more low-incomehousing here is to maintain communitydiversity. “We don’t want Santa Monica toturn into another Beverly Hills,” is a frequentcomment from the pro-development/affordable housing/SantaMonica Forward lobby.

Think about it. Is that so bad? BeverlyHills is cleaner, has a lower crime rate thanSanta Monica and many more amenities forresidents. But, I get what diversity advocatesare saying. A community made up of varietyof individuals - ethnically, racially and eco-nomically - is always more interesting andvaluable to the community.

Despite high property values and increas-ing rents, no matter where I go in SantaMonica, I see diversity. At our supermarkets,I see people of all races, income levels andethnicities. If they’re grocery shopping here, they probably live nearby.

The Third Street Promenade, Main Streetand Montana Avenue look like meetingsfrom the United Nations. I don’t buy thebogus claim that if we don’t build hundredsof low-income apartments annually, we’lllose it or become like Beverly Hills. We haveplenty of diversity.

Idealists, those profiting in the affordablehousing industry and developers who knowa few extra low income units will get themheight and density bonuses worth millionsof dollars are pushing the “need more hous-ing” agenda. Powerful members of the SantaMonica for Renters’ Rights (SMRR) steeringcommittee see developer benefits as a way tofinance favorite causes and recruit moremembers. Council just approved a develop-ment agreement for a five floor (60 feet tall),100 unit mixed-use project at 1560 LincolnBoulevard (formerly Denny’s). Its developer,NMS Properties, has promised to provide 20low-income affordable units on site,$150,000 for early childhood initiatives and$745,000 for parks and recreation uses, among other benefits. Councilmemberswere enthusiastic about the pedestrian expe-rience the project would bring to the cornerof Lincoln and Colorado.

Really? What’s council’s fascination withpeople on sidewalks, assuming that willoccur when this turkey is opened?Pedestrian traffic isn’t a community bene-fit but I digress. Council also OK’d amixed-use development at 1415 5th Street, with six floors (84 feet) and 64 apart-ments,14 of them “affordable.” NMSProperties promised a monetary contribu-tion of $90,000 toward transportation pro-grams, $280,000 toward parks and recre-ation programs, $100,000 toward earlychildhood initiatives and $40,000 towardBig Blue Bus downtown improvements, among others. In return, NMS can farexceed the site’s current zoning which callsfor a 32-foot building.

Fifield Co. Ltd., the developer of 1601Lincoln (formerly Norms), a 90-apartmentproject (18 on site low-income units) with afive floor (57 foot) wing, has promised$820,000 for transportation programs,$595,000 for parks and recreation use,$150,000 for early childhood education and anadditional $150,000 for affordable housingelsewhere in the city, among other benefits.Council is expected to review this in December.

Who makes out? While the early child-hood lobby gets $400,000, parks advo-cates win $1,390,000 and housing advo-cates get dozens of new, low-incomehousing units, the rest of us face an over-ly tall and unattractive skyline for the restof our lives.

When asked about increased water useresulting from all the development, MayorKevin McKeown is on record as saying thathousing development wasn’t contributing tothe problem because new units will have lowflow toilets and showerheads. Really? Sayanything to push the old agenda.Community benefits provide an opportuni-ty for cronyism, mutual back scratching andfavoritism, not real community value.

Judy Abdo, a co-founder of Santa MonicaForward, a developer-backed group thatsupports more housing and development, sees hundreds of thousands of developer“community benefit” dollars flow into herpet causes: early childhood education andaffordable housing (to name two). In returnfor her support, Abdo, a former mayor andcouncilwoman (1988-1996) who sits on thepowerful SMRR steering committee, makesit a point to let developers know exactlywhat’s required to get her backing and theirdevelopments built. Ask Santa Monicanswhether they’d rather have more diversity orimproved circulation, more cultural oppor-tunities and optimal park/recreational facil-ities for their kids. More housing develop-ment for people who want to move here ormeaningful social programs for our seniors, children and the disabled?

There may be hope. New City ManagerRick Cole suggested to council (Oct. 13) thatpiecemeal approval of developments be put“on hold” pending adoption of a DowntownSpecific Plan (DSP) and that it establish astandardized list of community benefitspegged to levels of development and a capon the maximum size of projects. It’s a smartmove that would go a long way to take thefinagling and politics out of the planningprocess and substantially reduce the devel-opment agreement/spot planning processnow in effect.

THE QUASIMODO AT FOURTH AND ARIZONAAs a reminder, much of the council meet-

ing tomorrow night will be spent discussingthe concept plans for the developmentagreement for a 12-floor (148 foot) 420,200sq. ft. mixed-use development at 1401Fourth St. at Arizona Avenue.

When it comes to community benefits, the staff report states, “It is anticipated thatthe amount and nature of affordable hous-ing, cultural space, and public space pro-gramming would exceed the contributionsthat would have otherwise been negotiatedfor childcare, cultural arts, affordable hous-ing, and parks and recreation.” In otherwords, this development’s amenities, designed to make it attractive and very prof-itable, are community benefits? We’re beingscammed.

It will be interesting to see how muchdecision making will take place tomorrowevening pending Cole’s suggested moratori-um on downtown development until a DSPis finalized next year.

Dear Earthtalk:My neighbor uses Roundup in her yard

routinely and tells me it’s harmless to peo-ple and pets, but I’ve heard that it is carcino-genic. Can you set the record straight?

Maise AlexanderNew Hope, PA

MONSANTO’S ROUNDUP HERBICIDEScontain three key components: the activeingredient glyphosate, water, and a soap-likesurfactant blend. The agricultural applica-tion of glyphosate has skyrocketed over thepast 20 years. According to the U.S.Geological Survey’s “Estimated AgriculturalUse for Glyphosate” map, in 2012 over 250million pounds of glyphosate were used oncrops in across the country-a substantialincrease from the less than 22 millionpounds used in 1992.

The U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) has classified the cancer-caus-ing potential of glyphosate as Category E(“evidence of non-carcinogenicity forhumans”), but the International Agency forResearch on Cancer (IARC) recently re-clas-sified it as a group 2A “probable” carcinogen.IARC’s recent evaluation of glyphosatefound “limited evidence of carcinogenicityin humans for non-Hodgkin lymphoma”and “convincing evidence that glyphosatealso can cause cancer in laboratory animals.”

Monsanto struck back, stating that theIARC’s conclusion “conflicts with the over-whelming consensus by regulatory bodiesand science organizations around theworld…which have found no evidence ofcarcinogenicity.” Monsanto added: “Further, the 2A classification does not establish a linkbetween glyphosate and an increase in can-cer. ‘Probable’ does not mean that glyphosatecauses cancer; even at 100 times the exposurethat occurs during normal labeled useglyphosate is not a human health risk.”

In September 2015, in response to theIARC findings, the California EPA’s Office ofEnvironmental Health Hazard Assessment(OEHHA) announced its intent to listglyphosate as a carcinogen under the state’sProposition 65 law. In California, businessesare required to provide “a clear and reason-

able warning” before knowingly and inten-tionally exposing anyone to a Proposition 65listed chemical. Once a chemical is listed, businesses have a year to comply with thewarning requirements. OEHHA is acceptingpublic comments until October 20 onwhether glyphosate should be listed underProposition 65.

“If they decide to list this chemical[under Proposition 65] and it survives theinevitable legal challenges, I think it’s possi-ble that every bottle of Roundup orglyphosate formulation sold in the state ofCalifornia would have to be labeled asknown...to cause cancer,” Nathan Donley, astaff scientist with the Center for BiologicalDiversity, told Pacific Standard. “It would bea huge deterrent for the purchase of thisproduct, at least in that state.” He added thatMonsanto has created a “false narrative” thatglyphosate is safe. “That position clearlycan’t be maintained anymore…and I think itwill probably be a precursor for hopefullyfederal action, at least federal acknowledg-ment that glyphosate does cause cancer.”

In addition to the threat of a warninglabel on their glyphosate products inCalifornia, Monsanto is currently facinglawsuits by two people claiming thatRoundup caused their cancers. EnriqueRubio filed suit on September 22nd in LosAngeles, claiming that the bone cancer hewas diagnosed with back in 1995 was a resultof spraying fields of crops with Roundupand other pesticides. The second lawsuit, filed on the same day in New York by JudiFitzgerald, claims she was exposed toRoundup when she worked at a horticultur-al products company in the 1990s. Fitzgeraldwas diagnosed with leukemia in 2012.

his wings.” The film was written by DamonHill.

The movie’s cast features Kathleen RosePerkins, who had a role in the DavidFincher-directed hit thriller “Gone Girl”with Ben Affleck, as well as Derek Theler(ABC Family’s “Baby Daddy”) and LindseyGort (The CW’s “The Carrie Diaries”). DowntownCamera Obscura art lab

For their annual celebration of the art ofdrawing, 1450 Ocean presents a low-costclass with Miles Lewis on the intricacies ofportrait drawing from life, using ink brush-es and pens. Using permanent lines andstrokes, artists are forced to love and buildupon each mark they make. Do you havewhat it takes? All levels welcome.

Draw from a live model. This class isopen to any level of portrait-drawing expe-rience. Ink brush and wash techniqueshave been a common sketching techniquefor centuries. The quickness and lightnessof the method allows for an elegance andflow that pencils or ballpoint pens do notpermit. Ink’s permanence turns the draw-ing into a kind of successive game, whereeach line must work with and against oth-ers to create space, volume and tension.

Students will work to capture theanatomical landmarks and value pattern ofthe head, while focusing on economy ofline and simplicity of expression. Studentswill leave class with a clear idea about howto stylize their portrait drawings for inkwork. Material fee includes brush pen.

Miles Lewis is an LA native and a recentCSU Northridge graduate. Beginning as apainter, poet, and educator, he found print-making and planted a flag for synthesis. Heis the co-director of the San FernandoValley-based Valley Print Studio with ZeinaBaltagi. vacy concerns. The Daily Press is not identi-fying the Franklin parent because no chargeswere filed.

“Our staff did a thorough review, andthere was no intended malice between thetwo boys,” Lee said. “It was an accident. It’san extremely unfortunate accident.”

The incident happened in a league runthrough CREST, a city-backed program thatprovides recreational activities for localyouths. The program’s flag football leaguesare assembled so that kids who attend thesame schools play with each other on thesame teams.

Parents of participating players typicallysign sportsmanship agreements. They areasked to respect all players, coaches and ref-erees, and they are urged not to use profani-ty.

A parent’s disregard for the agreementcould lead to a child being dismissed fromthe team, Lee said. The Franklin parent wasreminded of the rules and given a warning, officials said.

“These CREST sports are geared towardshaving a good experience for the children,”Lee said. “We want children to participateregardless of ability. It’s about skill develop-ment, teamwork and respect for each other

out on the field.”Santa Monica-Malibu school district offi-

cials heard about the incident and notifiedtheir school resource officer, as well asFranklin principal Deanna Sinfield andEdison principal Lori Orum.

“Both Deanna and Lori are aware of thesituation, take it very seriously, and are com-municating with each other so that each isaware should any further issues arise,”Superintendent Sandra Lyon wrote in anOct. 6 message to Board of Education mem-bers.

“We take these situations seriously andmonitor them closely for the safety of allinvolved, and it is important to rememberthat this is not a normal occurrence, nor areflection of the parents or students at eitherschool.

“I appreciate all our staff, the city staffand the parent community has done toaddress this situation and to make sure ourstudents can participate in extracurricularactivities in a safe environment.”

League organizers are working to rein-force the importance of the sportsmanshipagreement, officials said.

The Edison and Franklin flag footballteams are slated to face each other in arematch Nov. 21, according to the leagueschedule.

appointment. And by the time I left therewas a plan of care in place,” Abrams said.

Dr. Susie McCloskey, who works in radi-ation and oncology and is co-director ofthe center, said the idea for the center, established in 2012, came together very nat-urally among the doctors and leadership atthe hospital in an attempt to improve thequality of care women were receiving.

“We wanted to increase communicationand consistency and to deliver care in a real-ly collaborative way among the doctors,”McCloskey said.

McCloskey said the way that occurredwas twofold in terms of what patients havereported back to them.

“First, for women who were newly diag-nosed, as opposed to having to go fromappointment to appointment, doctor todoctor, in different locations at differenttimes, we sort of brought all of the doctorsto them under one roof. So certainly thatconvenience of care model was the majorlogistic change.

“The other thing that patients seem tolove is that we hired a coordinator for thebreast center who could be a single point ofcontact to help navigate what is otherwise avery complicated system.”

McCloskey believes these reasons are whytheir endorsement rates are almost 100 per-cent across the board.

TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENTAnother component of the breast center

that McCloskey is proud of is a treatmentoption they have which is not commonlyoffered elsewhere: prone breast radiationtherapy.

“Opposed to how we traditionally setwomen up for breast radiation therapywhich is called supine, and being set up ontheir back, prone is set up for radiationdelivery laying on the belly,” McCloskey said.

The patient lies flat on their stomach on aspecial board with a hole meant for theaffected breast to go into.

According to McCloskey, this way ofreceiving radiation treatment is beneficial topatients, especially those with larger breasts, for several reasons.

“One reason is that women tend to getthe greatest severity of skin reactions outaround the folds of the breasts, so when youdisplace those folds in the prone position theskin effects tend to be far less; there is areduction in skin toxicity.”

There is also the matter of convenience,

as patients receiving prone therapy are usu-ally given shorter courses of whole breasttreatment. Without prone, many womenwith larger breasts are not usually candidatesfor these shorter courses.

McCloskey said there is also the matter ofthe heart when it comes to prone, literally.

“There is no question that prone offersfar less radiation doses to the lungs, andleads to less of the normal organ toxicity thatradiation patients receive,” McCloskey said.“But women who have a larger breast size, orcancer in their left breast, spare the heartmore this way as well.”

Abrams happens to have been a candidatefor prone who just completed her radiationtherapy. And though she knew nothingabout the treatment beforehand, she ispleased with her experience.

“You know, actually coming in I wastotally ignorant, despite being a medical per-son. I just had really no opinion, no infor-mation. But when we talked about it Dr.McCloskey suggested that, because it was onmy left breast and because I have largebreasts it would be a good option for me sothat it could spare my heart and my heartmuscle,” Abrams said.

Abrams, who does not like MRIs, endedup being able to handle this treatment noproblem.

“It literally took five minutes a session. Iwould count to 100 and by the time I got to100 it was done.”

BEDSIDE MANNERHaving been a nurse, Abrams is in a posi-

tion to really evaluate how patients are treat-ed, and she applied that thinking to how sheherself was treated at the UCLA BreastCenter, Santa Monica.

“As a patient, you want to be treated likeyou would treat your patients. And I defi-nitely felt that and more. Being here wassomething that met my individual needs. What was going on with me at that momentwas the most important thing to everybodyand I did not feel like I was being neglected,”Abrams said.

McCloskey takes note of these concernsand tries to sympathize and accommodateher patients as best she can.

“We try to smooth the edges of what isalways going to be an anxiety provoking sit-uation,” she said.

And according to Abrams, they are doingjust that.

“It’s frustrating when things don’t go theway you want with a patient. Here they’vekind of got it nailed.”

Earlier this week, a southern Californiahigh school won the chance of a life-time: to have hip-hop superstarsMacklemore and Ryan Lewis performon campus AND to receive a $10,000grant for the school’s struggling artsand music departments. However, theschool’s administration refused theprize, claiming some parents voicedconcerns about the duo’s lyrics.

How could these obviously uninformedparents be so blind? Macklemore is

renowned for their strong support of gayrights and anti-drug use messages(maybe you’ve heard “Same Love?” Howabout “Otherside?”). They’ve even beenhonored by the ACLU for their activism!

Naturally, students were upset (I mean, wouldn’t you be?). But they didn’t justcomplain about it. They decided to takematters into their own hands. Rallyingonline through petitions and socialmedia — the hashtag #bringbackmackhas been tweeted over 700 times sincenews broke — they garnered over-whelming support from peers and fans

alike. And you know what? It worked!Students and the administration wereable to strike a compromise, allowingthe show (and the grant!) to go on.

• 1 in 5 young children needs developmental or educational therapy.

• 17% of children in the U.S. have developmental delays.

• 1 in 68 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

MAKE A HARD ROAD A LITTLE EASIER

A whole-child developmental learning center providing:

• Occupational Therapy • Speech Therapy

• Educational Therapy

At Child Success Center, our team helps children struggling with:

• ADHD • Sensory Processing Disorder • Learning Disabilities• Speech and Language Disorders • ASD • Developmental Delays

• Parents of children with special needshave a completely different experience of life. The daily challenges, the rollercoaster of emotions, the fear of thefuture—all of this can be overwhelming. But here’s one thing that shouldn’t be:the cost of therapy interventions.

• The Child Success Foundation provides funding for essential therapy to families whose inability to pay for services would prevent their child from accessing this support.

• CSF is one of L.A.’s few financial assistance programs available to support essential therapies for children with developmental, learning, and behavioral delays.

These services will make the differencebetween a child just surviving and a child thriving socially, physically, academically, and emotionally.
