Real Life Superheroes BY: SOLOMON DAVID SENIOR MINISTER, BCCC Last night I took my son Seth to see Marvel Universe Live in Indianapolis. He is a super-hero fanatic. We saw Spider-Man sling his webs on bad guys, Thor drop the hammer on evil minions, and Captain America knock flying vehicles out of the sky with his famous shield. It was a night of pyrotechnics, lasers, smoke, and special effects--a 7 year old’s dream. But we know that’s what super-heroes are--just a dream. If I get in trouble, I dare not trust a caped man to come swoop down and save the day. Our police departments dare not turn justice over to men in body suits with cool gadgets and sidekicks. If only the world really had super-heroes. Ah, but wait, they do. They are called the Church of Jesus Christ. It is an army of people who can shake the heavens with their prayers, bring hope during dark days, and do battle against the dark forces of this world who seek to steal, kill, and destroy. We serve in the shadows. Our best work is done on our knees and our power doesn’t come from a cube, a ring, a spider bite, or utility belt, but by the power of the living God moving through us as we make ourselves available to Him. Our greatest tool is love; love for one another, love for the lost, the hurting, the marginalized, the victimized, love for the word of God, and love even for those who stand opposed to the very things we stand so firmly upon. Love never fails us. I heard a man once say that the church of Jesus Christ really is the hope of the world. We have a world who is crying for help, although they are too proud at times to admit it. This is why it is so important that we ask God to fire up his church in 2015. If we really are the hope of the world, then we best make ourselves ready to give the world what they need as they continue to cry out for someone to save them. That someone is Jesus! Fired Up! “We recently remodeled the upstairs of our house. Amidst all the clutter and things to be put up was a box of all my old clippings of sports documents and sports photos my mother had saved for me. Showing my age, they were very brittle and turning yellow. They had been in that old box for a long time.”

We tasked each of our boys to get stuff back into their rooms and to decorate their respective rooms as they saw fit. I know that is a dangerous thing to tell a 16 year old and a 10 year old, but they did a great job. After they had finished, I wandered upstairs to take a look at the finished product. Kyle, our 10 year old, is a sports lover. He knows more about sports than I will ever know. So, as you could imagine, he had lots of sports things in his room. What caught my eye was he had placed a poster of Peyton Manning on his wall and right next to the Peyton picture was a picture of me that he had pulled out of that old box. Just

Peyton and Curt. Has a good ring to it don’t you think? I smiled as I left the room and just maybe I had a little more spring to my step reliving the old days. Kyle obviously placed value in both of those pictures. I sometimes wonder if we were to put our list of favorite things on a wall, we might place a picture of Jesus right up there with the rest of the things. Kyle Idleman so appropriately uses this theme in his title “Not a Fan” for his book. As people we are not much different than my little Kyle. We become fans of many different things.; be it money, houses,

possessions, sports stars, vacations, etc.--we all are fans at heart. As Christians, we love Jesus as well. The challenge for us is to make sure that Jesus is not just someone we are a fan of, but to daily make Him Lord Lord of our lives. The question is the same for all of us, “Where do we put Jesus?” Is He on our bookshelf, around our neck as a piece of jewelry, maybe a bumper sticker or a fish on our car…or have we totally surrendered to His will for our lives?

My prayer for myself, as well as all of you, is that we can learn to lean into Jesus daily and trust that He is in control of all things.

Prayerful!

Curt TuranchickConnections Minister

Passion Conference:An 18*25 Ministry post-event report50 college students and their adult leaders from Bachelor Creek’s 18*25 Ministry rang in the new year by worshipping with 20,000 other students and leaders from around the world on January 2-4 at the Philips Arena in downtown Atlanta, GA.

To fully describe the experience would be virtually impossible (it was definitely one of those “you had to be there” events) but I do want to share a few highlights with you--especially given the fact that so many of you prayed for the students attending and many of you supported them financially as well.

Over the course of two and half days we heard challenging and encouraging messages from dynamic communicators including Louie Giglio and Francis Chan. Another main session speaker, Hillsong New York’s Carl Lentz, challenged us to “occupy our streets” with the

message of the Gospel--to infiltrate our hometowns with the Good News of Christ.

We were led in worship by Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, and David Crowder--just to name a few. Let me tell you that worshipping in a standing-room-only arena with 20,000 people raising their hands to the Lord is the closest picture of heaven that we may ever get in this life.

Finally, we were blessed to experience all of this together as a church family. The 50 of us shared an experience together we will not soon forget. In particular, I was blown away as Rob and Laura Cole and their two daughters, Paige and Hannah, lifted their hearts and voices to the Lord less than a week after saying goodbye to their beloved Emily. Its only by the grace of God that happens.

Thank you for supporting us. God is so good.

It’s a new year! It’s time for fresh starts and renewal. The past year has taken on many new challenges and changes for our family. It was a year of difficult, yet rewarding decisions. The same could be said of Tiny Town.

This past year, we have had changes in many of our preschool departments. For years, Mo Lester and Tracy Short have led our nursery department. Mo decided earlier in the spring that the time was right to resign from her position. Tracy has also decided she is ready to minister in other areas.

These ladies have done a fantastic job. They both feel it’s time for something fresh and a time for new leadership. While we will miss them immensely in our ministry, I am excited about

new things to come. As Isaiah 43 says, new things are coming! Streams will be made in wastelands! Be watching for new and exciting things to happen in our nursery department. There is something you can help with in this endeavor! We NEED a substitute list for nursery volunteers. Life happens and there are times that a volunteer needs to find a substitute. Would you be willing to be added to that list? If so, please see me so I can add you.

Awana will be starting back up on January 14! It’s so exciting to see the building full of over 100 boys and girls each Wednesday night, excited to memorize Scripture and learn more about God! We have an amazing team of volunteers. We are

looking for a few more volunteers who would be wiling to listen to Kindergarten-2nd graders recite memory verses! If you are interested, please see Carmen or Brad Fleck. I think if you would talk to any of our Awana staff, they would tell you it’s one of the highlights of their week!! You don’t want to miss being blessed by these kids!

My prayer is that you and your family will also move forward and determine what it is that God has in store for you this year! Together, let’s watch how God makes new things happen for His glory!

Happy new year from the Kids Hope team! It's hard to believe that we have already had a terrific semester with our prayer partners, mentors, and mentees!

"To solve the problem of education, we need a vibrant middle class and children who are no longer at risk!" This powerful statement was part of a luncheon discussion for college professors. This level of research is indirectly saying we need more Kids Hope USA mentors, just like YOU! You are vibrant! You are the hands and feet of Jesus! You are able to give time, structure, and support, all in the name of LOVE to support the children as young minds but ultimately as young lives that Jesus created and loves deeply. And you will be blessed in return. Contact Ryan Rosen to join KHUSA!

Kids are saying... "My hope friend!", "It's Aaron day!, "I wore my special

shirt to be with Lynn today!" "She came on my birthday!"Teachers are saying..."His focus and attention where so much better today. He adores his mentor!" "My student had a great week all week because of his mentor!"Mentors are saying..."I asked him if he wanted to watch the school program and he said no because he only sees me once a week!" "I love that little boy!"

During the past semester we have seen countless joy filled moments in a group skating party, in games of jenga and monopoly, in messy science experiments, in gift giving and receiving, and in simply being present.

These students are so blessed by their mentors and my guess is that if you ask a mentor or prayer partner, they are blessed in their role as well! We have a waiting list of students for mentors. They have excitedly been talking to teachers about getting a mentor. Will you be one to share in their joy? If so, contact me to talk about how you can partner with Kids Hope USA.
