What Is Subcoal?

• A waste derived fuel produced from very high grade SRF into very high quality pellets.

• Pellets can be 16mm or 8mm diameter.

• Very high energy content typically 22-24MJ/kg

• Very high volatility at 60% approx.

“But what is the fuel quality like?”

The Four Reasons Why Subcoal Is So Attractive To The Cement Industry

Subcoal can be blended with coal or petcoke and co-milled on an existing fuel mill. This means plants can use such fuels in the main burner without having to make capital investments.

• Milled Subcoal can be used in the main burner when a plant is first embarking on the use of alternative fuels, without the need for major capital investment.

• Subcoal pellets can displace tyre chips.

• The milled pellets can be used to displace solvents.

• Milled Subcoal can be used on plants that find it difficult to achieve the very highest substitution levels.

Loesche’s Comments About Subcoal

“Loesche recognise the growing strategic importance in the use of alternative fuels by our clients. With this in mind Loesche were delighted to examine the capacity of a coal and Subcoal mix to be milled on our milling systems by using our pilot laboratory in Dusseldorf. These results have been extremely encouraging with our milling system being able to mill a 30/70 mix of Subcoal and coal without any operational issues being seen. It is now our aim to extend this trial into a full commercial trial and to investigate the possibilities of increasing the content of Subcoal in the mill feed mix. Loesche look upon Subcoal as an exciting addition to the fuels that our “state of the art” milling systems can handle and hope that this development will help our clients further in developing their fuel strategies.”

Mr Danny Reid, Managing Director Loesche Energy Systems Ltd, 17th September 2015

The N+P & Loesche Co-operation• By 2014 N+P had developed the Subcoal product but

were looking for a partner company to fully test the milling concept.

• Loesche were keen to move into the alternative fuel business but were unsure how this could be achieved.

• Following initial discussions it was clear that there were many synergies between the two companies.

• Loesche then used their research laboratory in Dusseldorf to test Subcoal, with the results being very promising.

• Now Loesche and N+P are developing agreements with certain cement plants to carry out full commercial trials on existing Loesche fuel mills.

Description Of The Loesche Trial Methodology

• General:– reference grinding test with used coal in co-grinding test– increase ratio of Subcoal stepwise to see effect of higher Subcoal ratio on grinding behavior and fineness (PSD)

• Test itself:– constant parameters:

• mill outlet temperature • working pressure• gas flow• mill differential pressure

– variable parameter:• classifier speed • working pressure with constant classifier speed

• Evaluation:– after each setting and a retention time to get a steady state process in the mill plus the downstream equipment a

sample is taken– the sample is sieved on an air jet sieve with different sieve sizes– the residue of each sieve is used to calculate the Loesche grindability factor and load factor

The Loesche Trial Results

• Subcoal is deagglomerated and also ground with or between the coal particles (maybe the foils are cut by the edges of the coal) which could be verified by the sieving residue and the particle sizes mentioned before pelletizing

• With increasing Subcoal, the load factor and thus the capacity increased – for hard coal

– and it seems the same for petcoke too but the data is not sufficient to make an appropriate decision

• Specific power consumption was in the same range

• It seems that with higher Subcoal ratio (20 to 30%) classifier has no or a marginal effect on PSD and with increasing Subcoal ratio the residue increases

The Loesche Trial Results

• Subcoal is deagglomerated and ground between the coal particles.

• With increasing Subcoal the load factor hence capacity increases.

• The specific power consumption remained in the same range.

• Looking at the PSD it seems that the higher the Subcoal addition then the classifier has no/marginal effect on PSD.

• With increasing Subcoal addition the residue increases.

Future Commercial Trials

• Full scale industrial trials are being planned with a number of kilns in Europe:– Four 5 stage precalciner kilns

– One 4 stage precalciner kiln

– One Lepol kiln

– First Dutch power station scheduled to start commercial co-grinding next week (40 t/day)

• Loesche & N+P will together carry out the trials in close collaboration with the cement kilns

• Loesche offers technical support and if necessary can adjust mills to maximize the usage of alternative fuels via the mill

• N+P is setting up new production Subcoal facilities closer to possible end users to optimize the logistic cost chain

General Discussion Of N+P Developments Since the Last Global Cemfuels Conference

• N+P laid claim to be the biggest alternative fuel exporter out of the UK; 50.000 t/month

• N+P is in the process of starting export from France and Italy to optimize the cost chain for Eastern Europe and Northern Africa

• First supply outside of Europe are expected Q4 2016

• Alternative fuels portfolio increased from 1.1 mi ton to 1.6 mio ton by the end of 2016

Conclusions

• Subcoal is a highly engineered high quality alternative fuel.

• The are “four” main reasons why cement companies like the fuel.

• The new N+P & Loesche relationship.

• Loesche have now tested the milling of Subcoal and are now offering the concept their full backing.

• Full scale commercial trials with Loesche support are now in preparation.

• N+P are also developing strongly in terms of developing Subcoal and the SRF business on a bigger scale.
