From the left First Secretary Andrea Canepari,

First Counselor Luca Ferrari, and H.E. Ambassador Giovanni Castellaneta

From the Neoclassicism of Thomas Jefferson’s design of Monticello and sketches of the White House, to “all’italiana” gardens and parks, to the strong Roman classicism of the Jefferson Memorial, to Costantino Bru-midi’s frescoes in Congress and the National Library, to the striking composition of Luigi Moretti’s Watergate Complex – America’s capital is infused with the influences of a culture that laid the foundations of Western so-ciety. This book pays homage to this strong and still lively relationship, and is essential reading for all those interested in architecture and the visual arts. The volume contains the most comprehensive analysis of the Italian influ-ences on the architecture of some of the key buildings in Washington and Virginia from the eighteenth century to the present, extensively illustrated with archival black and white photos, drawings, and sketches, as well as new photographs by Max Mackenzie. Special thanks go to H.E. Giovanni Castellaneta, Ambassador of Italy to the United States, who conceived and envisaged the project and to the Press Office of the Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C., for its support. Luca Molinari is a practicing architect and a Professor of Architecture at the University of Naples. He is the au-thor of Massimiliano Fuksas: Works and Projects 1970-2005, published by Skira in 2005. Max Mackenzie, a Washington, D.C. – based photographer who specializes in architectural subjects. Italy presented yesterday, February, 11, 2008, data and statistics on her Anti-counterfeiting and Anti-piracy enforcement activi-ties in 2007 at a conference held at the Italian Embassy. Ambas-sador Giovanni Castellaneta opened the Conference while the keynote speakers where Professor Mauro Masi, Italian Delegate for Intellectual Property, and General Paolo Poletti, Chief of Staff of Guardia di Finanza, the Italian Financial Police Corps. Among the speakers was also Chris Israel, US Coordinator for Intellectual Property. Ambassador Castellaneta, in his welcome speech, remembered the figure of his late friend Jack Valenti and his important role in fighting piracy as long time President of the Motion Picture As-sociation. Professor Mauro Masi stressed the engagement of the Italian Government in fighting piracy and counterfeiting which is seri-ously damaging the Italian Economy and is providing income to criminal organizations. Professor Masi collected data from 12 different Italian Administrations and Agencies, from the Guardia di Finanza to the Judiciary Power. While the data from the Guardia di Finanza are definitive some other Agencies still have to provide the final figures for 2007. Thus, while comprehen-sive definitive data for 2007 is not yet available, the presentation gave a good preliminary picture of the enforcement successes of Italian Authorities. In 2007 Italian Enforcement Authorities ar-rested as many as 1,344 people on IPR violation charges.

General Poletti stressed that, in 2007, the Guardia di Finanza alone seized 105 million pi-rated items. This makes Italy by far the leading European Country in seizures. Coordinator Israel, on his way to the White House to present the US report on Intellectual Property, recognized the efforts of Italian Au-thorities, and remarked on the complexity of the phenomenon and on the need for further coop-eration. In the audience where representatives from the U S Trade Rpresentative’s Office, the Department of State, the FBI, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Justice as well as, DHS, IIPA, MPA, RIAA and BSA.

Italian delegation at WIREC in Washington, DC. February 4, 2008

Ambassador Giovanni Castellaneta led the Italian delegation on the occasion of a global conference on renewable energy sources entitled ‘Washington International Renewable Energy Conference-WIREC’, which was inaugurated on February 4th. The event, whose participants included President George W. Bush, was attended by over 6,000 delegates from 90 countries, interna-tional organizations, NGOs and the world of industry.

  • In his welcome message, H.E. Ambassador Giovanni

Castellaneta opened the meeting by remarking the crucial role of ISSNAF and the need “to bring the two sides of the Atlantic closer”, by creating a virtuous circle promoting the exchange of information, cooperation and synergy between the scientists in Italy and those currently working in North America. Among the participants at the meeting, Nobel Prize for physics Riccardo Giacconi, supporting member of ISSNAF Foundation, and its President, Dr. Vito Campese.

The Foundation, which can count on influential representatives of the scientific, technological and academic communities, including three Nobel Prize winners, aims to exploit the creativity and intellectual prestige of the Italian scientists abroad. It is essential that both the Italian aca-demic and business communities take advantage of the vast presence of the talented Italian scientists currently working in North America. It is therefore imperative to adopt ac-tions that are concrete, structured and efficient to allow for the reversal of the “brain drain” phenomenon that will in turn translate into growth and innovation within our coun-try.

The Italian Scientists and Scholars in North Amer-ica Foundation was conceived to allow for a return of such experts back to Italy, by financing academic scholarships geared towards young graduates and experts between Italy, the United States and Canada.

    Philadelphia.

    February 19, 2008

    23

On February 19, 2008, Ambassador Giovanni Castellaneta took part in the inauguration of the new wing of the Agusta-Westland (part of the Finmeccanica Group) helicopter factory in Philadelphia In his opening address, Ambassador Castellaneta, speaking to the management of the group and the subsidiary company as well as various local authorities such as Mayor Michael A. Nutter of Philadelphia, senators and representatives of the state of Pennsylvania, remarked on the spirit of the event as a tangible example of cooperation between Italy and the United States, which ranges from industrial and economic partnerships to bilateral relations.

The nearly $30 million investment by the Finmeccanica group made it possible to expand the produc-tion lines of the AW119 and AW139 multi-function aircrafts, currently being used by the U.S. Armed Forces, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Pennsylvania State Police. The economic impact of such an important agreement has positive repercussions both on the local US economy as well as on Finmeccanica’s headquarters in Varese, Italy, in terms of the company’s technological advancements in the field of aeronautics. With ample media coverage, Ambassador Castellaneta renewed the Italian Government’s and the Em-bassy’s support to Agusta Westland strategy in particular and to Finmeccanica’s operations in the competitive American market.

  • Google Sky: Hubble Becomes the Internet’s Eye on the Universe

    A Presentation at the Embassy

    February 19, 2008

    24

On February 19th, Dr. Alberto Conti, Chief Engineer of the Data Management System at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Balti-more, MD, held a presentation titled “Google Sky: explore our universe through the eyes of Hubble”, at the Embassy of Italy. Google Sky is a new software, resulting from the cooperation between Dr. Conti, Mrs. Carol Christian, and Google. Just as Google Earth modified the way we look at our planet, using the same technology, Google Sky opens a window on the universe offering us thousands of images gathered by Hubble and other terrestrial telescopes. With Google Sky we have of a map of the universe, from the closest planets to galaxies billions of light-years away. Hubble is the space telescope developed by NASA and ESA, launched in April 1990. It orbits at about 355 miles from the terrestrial surface and makes a complete revolution around the earth every 97 minutes, at a speed of about 17,000 mph. By means of a 7.9 ft-diameter mirror, it gathers the light coming from stars and galaxies and records it with a series of sophisticated cameras. This data is then sent to earth and analyzed by scientists and researchers. Google Sky is an amazing tool useful to scien-tists for their research projects as well as to the “space traveler” hiding inside each of us.
