FDAP Drug & Alcohol Professional Certification Recognised qualifications

Qualification categories

Two types of qualificationbased evidence are recognised by the Professional Certification Advisory Panel (PCAP).

Direct evidence

UKaccredited awards 1 based on an uptodate (within three years) direct assessment of competence against a particular NOS unit (or its exact equivalent), and verified by an independent, qualified NVQ assessor – including NVQrelated awards 2 and OU/FDAP awards 3 .

Complementary evidence

Qualifications recognised by the PCAP as incorporating an assessment of workplace competence which provides supportive evidence of competence in a given unit. These fall in to three categories:

• “Professional qualifications”  which are restricted to professional certifications issued by UK recognised professional bodies;

• “Vocational qualifications”  which are restricted to UKaccredited awards 1 based on a direct assessment of competence against one or more NOS units, and verified by an independent, qualified NVQ assessor;

• “Other qualifications” which are restricted to UKaccredited awards 1 focusing on substance misuse the PCAP is unable to consider awards which are not UKaccredited or cover other subject areas.

Only qualifications formally “recognised” by our independent Professional Certification Advisory Panel (PCAP) can be accepted as “direct” or “complementary” evidence against a given unit. However, the list of qualifications recognised by the PCAP is kept under constant review and awarding bodies and members of FDAP may submit additional qualifications for consideration by the Panel.

For some units, any UKaccredited substancemisuse related qualification at Level 3 or above is accepted as complementary evidence under the heading “other qualifications” for certain groups of professionally qualified practitioners 4 , provided they “focus on working with substance users”.

_____

1 “UKaccredited award” = a qualification appearing on the National Database of Accredited Qualifications or awarded by a body accredited by the Qualification & Curriculum Authority or awarded by a UK Royal College.

2 “NVQrelated award” = national qualification, on the National Database of Accredited Qualifications, based on an independent assessment of competence against National Occupational Standards (NOS) includes NVQs, “individual (NVQ)unit accreditation” and the Award/Certificate in Working with Substance Misuse.

3 “OU/FDAP award” = award, from the Open University and FDAP, based on an independent assessment of competence against units from DANOS and other NOS suites, verified by a qualified NVQ assessor – includes 10unit Professional Award for Drug & Alcohol Practitioners and smaller Professional Development Awards.

4 “Professionally qualified practitioners” = those qualified to practice in regulated health & social care professions (doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, pharmacists, social workers, probation officers etc), UKqualified teachers and UKaccredited counsellors and psychotherapists.
