Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Cab Calloway School of the Arts
Gold Key Art Award winners were:
Christopher Anderson, Juan Avila, Katherine Buell-Fleming, Nicholas Carro, Christian Dexter, Nikita Doskochynskyy, Christine Fu, Matthew Gamble, Maria Ji, Seoyeon Kim, Chelsea Martin, Nicole Morken, Amy Su, Kenneth Testa and Nicole Williams. Nikolett Konkoly Two of these students, Maria Ji and Juan Avila garnered gold for senior portfolios which truly is a significant honor because only 5 portfolio awards are given regionally. They are supported by teachers – Richard Hanel, Toniann DeGregory, Will Greider and Steve Mayo.

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards H.B. duPont Middle School
Elyse Lamey and Nehal Kahn both won Gold awards in the Regional Scholastic Awards held in January at Delaware State University in Dover. This allowed their work to proceed to the National Scholastic Award Competition in NY. Miss Elyse Lamey has received a Silver Award for her ceramic entry, Leaf Vase at the National Art Competition.

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards NATIONAL WINNERS
Cab Calloway: National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards as well. Junior, Aubrey Arnold earned an American Visions Medal (best in the region) for her short story, The Kiss. Hers was chosen from a field of 230,000 submissions of regional gold key works and is among the .08% nationally to receive a 2013 scholastic medal. Eighth grader, Nicole Williams earned a National Silver Medal for her watercolor painting, Iris in Spring. Both students will be honored in NYC on Friday, May 31st at Carnegie Hall! Ms. DeGregory will be accompanying these students to NYC.

DELAWARE FOUNDATION FOR THE VISUAL ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS
This year Cab Calloway Visual Arts Program had 3 students earn scholarships in the Delaware Foundation for the Visual Arts Senior Portfolio Competition and only a total of 5 scholarships are given annually: Juan Avila, first place ($1500) Laura Nagle, 3rd place ($750) Nicholas Carro, 5th place ($300)

CONGRESSIONAL ART AWARD WINNER 2013
Maria Ji. She was named by Congressman Carney as the 2013 Congressional Art Award Winner. Maria will have her painting displayed in the Capitol. Her painting, Surreality, was chosen as the Delaware winner of the annual Congressional Art Competition. Maria is a 12th grade student at Cab Calloway who has been studying under art teacher Richard Hanel. She and the other winners from congressional districts across the nation will be honored at a reception in Washington, D.C. in June. Her work will also be displayed in the Capitol for a year as part of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition exhibit.

Odyssey of the Mind Cab Calloway School of the Arts
The team placed first in the State competition and will advance to the Word Finals at Michigan State on May 22nd. The team is made up of Gabe MacKinney, David Petka, Lukas MacKinney, Jack Petka, Matt Gamble, Cameron Damude and Brian Johansson. This team was also one of three teams at the State Finals to be inducted into the 350 Club after placing first in all three categories judged - long term problem, spontaneous problem, and style. The team was coached by Julie Johnston, and supported by teacher sponsor, Ms. Morris.

Alexis I. duPont High School students at FCCLA State Conference at the Dover Sheraton on March 27th
Sophomore Wing Tang received a perfect score in Fashion Construction and was awarded a gold medal and a trophy for her top honors.
Juniors Chloe Cardner and Katie Hitchens received silver medals in Fashion Construction. All three students entered their special occasion/prom/evening dresses in the STAR event.
Junior Kelsey Underwood received a gold medal and a trophy for her top score statewide in the Recycle and Redesign of a textile item event. Senior Taysiah Butler-Collins received a bronze medal for her accessory item entry in the Recycle and Redesign event.
Junior Kate Melvin received a bronze medal in the Fashion Design STAR event.
Juniors Marrissa Nardo, Alexis Faust, and Tyra Wilson received silver medals for their team entry in Showcase Display.
Marrissa Nardo was elected to serve as a state officer on the executive council of the Delaware FCCLA. This is the seventh consecutive year in which a member of A.I.'s FCCLA has been elected to serve on the council.
Marrissa, Wing, and Kelsey will be traveling with their advisor to the National FCCLA Conference in Nashville, TN in July.

Conrad Schools of Science Smart Drive
Conrad 10th grade driver education students competed in the Smart Drive Competition. Brendan Bateman, Amy Davis, Jose Fontano, Ryan Hersch, Luis Seba and Adam Tran finished amongst the top scorers of more than 900 students. These students will all be given certificates and gift cards. Additionally, Deja Harris was selected in the Best Essay category to receive the first ever Michael Kohler $1,000 Scholarship. Conrad was selected as the Smart Drive School of the Year based on excellence and enthusiasm. Teacher- John Kulesza

Youth in Government On March 22nd-24th, 34 Conrad students participated in Youth in Government in
Dover. The students wrote and presented bills or participated in the judicial program. This year the participants did exceptionally well! Here are some of the highlights:
· Lauren McCrea was chosen to attend a very prestigious conference called C.O.N.A. (Conference on National Affairs). Lauren will travel to North Carolina this summer and interact with students from all over the country. Additionally, Lauren had the honor of serving as a justice for the judicial program. She is well on her way to becoming an attorney!
· Felicia Flores and Nicole Kennedy were elected to run the middle school component of the program. They even stayed in the Governor’s guest house on Thursday night. Felicia Flores also won “best legislation” for the middle school program.
· Meredith Friedland was chosen as the most “outstanding delegate” for the middle school program.
· Fabian Lemos was one of three high school students in the entire conference recognized for “best legislation.”
· Lexie Edelson was one of two middle school students recognized for “best legislation.”
· Jack Gallagher was the recipient of the “outstanding character” award.

Melissa Blair James Madison fellowship for the state of Delaware. The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation offers $24,000 James Madison Graduate Fellowships to individuals desiring to become outstanding teachers of the American Constitution at the secondary school level. Additionally, fellows are required to attend a summer institute at Georgetown University for four weeks. I intend to study U.S. history.

CAB STUDENTS on CSW SWIM TEAM EARN STATE HONORS
The Charter School of Wilmington girls and boys swim team this year placed first and second at the State level respectively; three of Cab Calloway’s team members earned first place honors.
Lily Dubroff was on the Medley Relay and 400 Free relays that got first place and broke both school and state records, and she won the 500 Free (broke school record) and the 200 Free (broke school record)
Chris Gardner got 3rd in the 100 Back, 6th in the 200 Free and was on the medley relay (2nd place and 400 free relay (3rd Place), both broke school records.
Kevin Kruelle won 1st place in the Diving and set a new school Record.
All three were named FIRST TEAM for ALL CONFERENCE SWIMMING. Congratulations Lily, Chris and Kevin! They were coached by Cindy Millison.
