The History of Steambaths

Steambaths are an ancient type of bath that can be traced back as far as the Ancient Greeks, although later was adopted by the Romans as popular social gatherings for men, in addition to being places for rejuvenating the body's overall health. The Roman baths are a famous aspect of the culture of the Roman Empire. Later, Russians adopted the use of steam baths, and they are still prominent in Russia today, especially as places where men conduct business deals. Of course, the Turks have been using steam baths for thousands of years, hence the interchangeable use of "Turkish bath" and steambath.Ruins of a Roman bath house.

Modern Steambaths

Today, natural steam baths still exist, and often still use similar systems that the Romans used, which contain pipes and pumps that bring water up and into the large pool areas, wherever the natural springs exist. Heaters are also now used to maintain warm temperatures in the baths.

There are many different types of steam baths, which are different than a sauna. (Both are hot, but the steam in a sauna is created by throwing water on a stove.)

Some forms of steambath are referred to as Turkish baths, steam rooms, or steam showers.

Steambath Benefits

Steam baths are not only used for relaxation purposes, but for health and fitness reasons as well. The moist, hot air improves blood circulation, and eases muscle tension.

It's also beneficial for the skin, as the humidity levels ensure that the skin stays hydrated and supple, and the moisture gathered on the top layer of the skin prevents the body from losing heat through evaporation, which accelerates detoxification. Also, the moisture in the air alleviates the breathing and chest pains of those with respiratory conditions, as a steam bath session can loosen the chest muscles and mucous, helping ailments such as asthma and bronchitis. Because of relaxation effects, steam baths are recommended for patients with sleep disorders or over-excitability.

Steambath Function

The steam bath produces a thermal effect on the body. The body attempts heat loss through the skin and lungs as the temperature of the steam bath is higher than the body's, and sweating occurs. The body temperature rises, as it cannot maintain its initial temperature in the heat of the steam bath. Circulation increases as the body adjusts to accept heat more readily. The longer the steam bath session and the hotter the temperature of the bath, the more a body's temperature can rise, and the more sweating that is possible.

Steambath Clarification

A sauna and a steam bath are terms often used interchangeably; however, they are not the same. A sauna (sometimes called a "drysauna"), uses dry heat, while the steam bath uses moist heat. Dry saunas can reach higher temperatures than steam baths, due to the lower humidity levels. Dry saunas also appear different than steam baths, often designed with wooden benches and walls.

Steam Room Construction Guidelines

Requirements: Steam rooms require a waterproofing membrane

on all surfaces to prevent moisture from penetrating adjoining spaces. Vapor barrier membrane shall be designed for relative temperature exposure.

All steam rooms will require adequate insulation on walls and ceilings to reduce moisture condensation at temperature variations.

Slope ceilings (2" per ft . minimum) to avoid condensation from dripping onto occupants (sometimes sloped to center to minimize rundown on walls).

Material and Tile Installation: Attach four equally spaced tie wires to the

supporting members and through the insulation. Attach 1/4" D steel pencil rods vertically over the insulation. Attach metal lath to pencil rods on both walls and ceilings.

Install open slip joints in all corners between walls and ceilings and to divide areas that exceed 16'-0in length.

Floors-follow Method B414. Walls and ceilings-follow Method W221.

Steam Room Construction Guidelines

Steam RoomsRequirements: Steam rooms require a waterproofing membrane on all

Sizing a Commercial Steam Bath Generator

1) Need Volume of Room (W x L x H = Cubic Footage)2) Determine Materials (If porous increase size)3) If Pipe run is longer than 50 feet increase size4) If 2 Steam Rooms are serviced by one Generator, the combined

resultant room volume of the 2 rooms should not exceed 1000 cu.ft.

Note: First get cubic footage and then you MUST FIND OUT the type of materials that will be in the shower-Marble, granite, natural stone materials are VERY POROUS and require additional BTUs to heat up.That's why its recommended to double the cubic feet.

Select a location as near as practical to the steam room.Typical locations include: closet, vanity cabinet, heated attic or basement.

Locating The Generator

This is not to be taken as the complete guide for installation. Please refer to manufacturers installation manual for additional information.

1. Locate steam bath generator within 25 feet of steam room2. Do not install steam bath generator inside steam room3. Do not install steam bath generator outdoors or where water could freeze.4. Do not install steam bath generator or plumbing lines in unheated attic5. Do not install steam bath generator near flammable or corrosive materials or

chemicals such as gasoline, paint thinners, or the like. Installation in areas having high concentrations of chlorine (such as pool equipment room) must be avoided.

6. Install steam bath generator on a solid and level surface7. Install steam bath generator in an upright position only Install steam bath

generator in an upright position only. Install a pressure reducing valve to limit supply to 15-20 P.S.I.G.

8. Install anti-water hammer device as necessary9. Use unions on all pipe connections10. Use ONLY brass piping or copper tubing as permitted by codes11. Provide a minimum of (12) inches at both ends and top of the steam generator

or as required for servicing.

Where to place the Steam Generator

The recommended places to place a steam generator is in one of the following:

Typical Control Installation

The only visible items in the shower are the steam head and the control-Preferable to utilize controls that have a built-in thermostat in the control- Avoid drilling another hole in the shower. Please note the location of the steamhead & the control.

Typical Steam head Installation

Step 1

Locate Steam head 6-12 inches above floor

Step 2

Install steam head with the oil well facing up

Step 3

Use a bronze drop ear fitting to a header and run a copper steam line from the steam generator to the drop ear fitting.

Step 4

Mark on the nipple where the surface of the wall is. Remove the nipple and measure the portion that was in the wall- subtract and select brass nipple of that length

Step 5

Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of the new nipple and screw the nipple into the steam head. No wrenches!

Things to Know About The Steam Outlet Pipe

1. Do not install any valve in steam line.

2. Use 1/2-inch brass pipe or copper tubing.

3. Insulate steam line using pipe insulation rated 212 F or higher.

4. Pitch steam line 1/4" per foot towards steam head or steam generator.

NOTE: Running the steam line down and then up will create a steam trap blocking the flow of steam.

Steam Generator Parts

This is a basic layout of a steam generator, a very sophisticated tea kettle. A solid state PC board controls all functions water level, contactor actuation, & the heating coils to boil the water.

Draining the Generator

Draining the Generator may also be accomplished by an Auto flush on some systems. Draining the system provides clean steam every time. Draining the system enhances the life of the steam unit.
