THE SCHOOL’S CURRICULUM

A pupil at Kids Court Montessori obtains a world standard, first class education which fosters a firm foundation for future learning. Top priority is placed on seeing children learn right things, the right way in the right environment.

The school uses a well-prepared Montessori Curriculum for laying a solid academic foundation for children aged 18 months to five years. At the Nursery level the school uses key aspects of the EYFS as extensions to the Montessori Curriculum. While at the elementary level, a more abstract version of the Montessori program, a mixture of the British National Curriculum and IPC (International Primary Curriculum) and other extensions are used to help build on the laid foundation.

The school also offers a wide array of extracurricular activities

ATTENDANCE

It is expected that children will attend school every day except when illness requires them to stay at home. School requires parents whose children are ill to CALL the front desk and relay the information. The school will call the parent to ask about the welfare of ill children before the end of the day. If child will be absent from school for any other reason other than illness, parents must inform the school in writing to the administrative office and copy the class teacher. It is not advised that children miss classes during the term as they miss out on valuable learning.

HOLIDAYS

We believe in year round schooling. We’ve broken the school year down into three regular terms and a summer term. This has been done out of sensitivity to those families who go for vacation abroad during the summer. The summer term is therefore optional. We will usually have two weeks break at Christmas and Easter. In the summer, we will have two weeks break on either side of the summer term. We observe all public holidays.

ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES

School opens by 7am. The school day starts by 8am and children are received by teachers at the gate till 8:15am. Classes start by 8:20am. Lateness can cause your child to miss out on a valuable lesson.

It is normal for some children to have difficulty separating from parents, or cry when dropping off. Please make your drop brief. The more you prolong the departure, the harder it gets. A smile, cheerful good-bye Kiss, and a reassuring word that you will be back is all that is needed. In our experience, children are always quick to get involved in play or activities as soon as parents’ are gone.

PARENTS’ ARE ADVISED TO PLEASE ENSURE THAT THEY DO NOT DOUBLE PARK DURING PICK UP AND DROP OFF TO AVOID CONGESTION AND TO ENSURE THE SCHOOL MAINTAINS A CORDIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR NEIGHBORS.

Please be brief at pick up times. This is a time of testing, when two different authority figures are present (the parent and the teacher). All children will test to see if the rules still apply. During arrival and departure, we expect parents to back up our rules, but if not, we will remind the child that their behavior is inappropriate and take action to correct, if needed. Please be in control of your child during pick-up time.

PICK UP TAGS

Every child is given a pick-up tag and anyone picking up a child/children is expected to show the security guards, receptionist and class teachers (where applicable) the tag before he/she is allowed in or out. Anyone who does not have a tag should kindly see the Receptionist or Admin person who will confirm from the submitted form if the person is permitted to pick up the child or not. We advice that parents call in advance to notify the office if there are any changes to the regular pick up arrangements.

No one without a tag will be allowed to leave the premises with a child unless confirmation is given to the security guard by the office. This is to help ensure the safety of the children.

There is a charge of N1000 if anyone loses the tag during the term and needs a replacement.

DROP OFF AND PICK UP TIME IS NOT GOOD TIME TO DISCUSS SERIOUS PROBLEMS. LITTLE EARS AND MINDS HEAR AND UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING. WE ARE NOT COMFORTABLE DISCUSSING CHILDREN IN THE PRESENCE OF ANYONE, BUT THEIR PARENTS’. TOPICS THAT CONCERN DAY-TO-DAY EVENTS OR LIGHT- HEARTED DISCUSSION ARE FINE.

LATE PICK-UP FEES

A late fee of N1000 / per child for every 30minutes after official closing time will be charged. For children enrolled in the afterschool program a late fee of N2000/

per child after 6pm will be charged. Payment will be made in CASH at the time of pick up. Parents are expected to adhere to this policy.

On general bad traffic days, parents are expected to call to say they are running late. Parents who do this will not be charged the late pick up fee.

COMMUNICATION

Good communication is vital to the efficient/ effective management of any establishment. It is important that we discuss any concerns or questions that may arise about any aspect of the school. It is important that we discuss openly any concerns or questions that may arise. It is also important that there is a similar child philosophy between the parents’ and us. We welcome questions, feedback, or discussions of any kind that are oriented towards a positive outcome for the children.

Home connection book

The Home connection book which serves as a medium of communication between home and school. From the crèche to elementary classes, it is expected that the connection books be used to inform parents of standards and expectations and activities that take place within the school. Parents should use this as a medium to keep in touch with the teaching staff. Parents are enjoined to write their comments and observations and append their signatures. The Nido group communication books are sent home while in the Toddler community they sent home thrice a week. In the Nursery and Elementary the home connection books are sent home on Fridays.

Curriculum spread sheet

Every term, each parent receives a curriculum overview which highlights all the topics the children will cover during that term. This will be distributed during the first few weeks of the term.

- At the start and end of the term, parents will receive The KCS COURIER from the Director’s desk via mail.

- The interactive e-mail service is also available for better communication between parents and teachers. Each class has an email address.

Sensitive issues will be discussed in private outside of regular classroom hours. If you have a question regarding your child, please ask his /her teacher. The teachers are the first resource for questions or difficulties. If the teacher is unable to resolve the issue, please address your questions to the director. It would be appreciated if parents make an appointment in advance, in order to keep things running smoothly.

Also available at the school’s front desk are concern forms which can be filled if any concerns or complaints arise. These forms are sent directly to the Director who would reply within 24hours.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SCHOOL HAS ZERO TOLERANCE FOR VERBAL OR PHYSICAL ALTERCATIONS BETWEEN PARENTS AND TEACHERS. ALL PARENTS MUST RESPECT ALL MEMBERS OF STAFF OF KIDS COURT MONTESSORI AT ALL TIMES. No smoking is permitted on the premises.

DISCIPLINE

We maintain a positive discipline policy, which focuses on prevention, redirection, love, constituency and firmness. We stress two main patterns of behavior: Respect for others people and Respect for property. They rules are explained to the children frequently, so they will all be familiar with guidelines. We will try to prevent problems, redirect when appropriate, discuss inappropriate behavior, encourage making amends when offense involves another person, and sometimes withdraw privileges based on the principle of ‘’natural consequences’’.

Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES will there be Physical abuse, verbal abuse, or name calling. Neither food nor sleep will ever be withheld from children as a means of punishment.

If a discipline problem arises that does not respond to the above mentioned techniques, we will hold a conference with the parents.

The followings are some general guidelines of Montessori discipline that parents should apply at home;

Hold the child to a standard and he/she will rise to expectation Be clear and consistent Make reward internal not external Praise children for doing something right Be respectful to your child Let natural consequences flow from inappropriate behavior Refrain from using insulting or abusive words

MEALS

The school provides a compulsory nutritious lunch. However the children are expected to bring in their snacks for the day. Energy giving snacks and drinks are encouraged. We do not accept fizzy drinks, sweets and chocolates. Parents should ensure their kids carry a water bottle that is easy to open or close and is leak proof and not breakable.

We will never force a child to finish what is on his/her plate, but we will encourage each child to try a few bites of everything. If a child refuses to eat their meal, there will be no food served until the next designation meal/snack time. All eating patterns will be communicated to the parents’.

Please label all your child’s belongings.

INDOOR/OUTDOOR PLAY

Indoor Play: We provide a variety of age-appropriate toys for indoor play on days when the weather is not conducive to outdoor play, or if for any reason a certified teacher is unavoidably absent. We have chosen such toys with consideration for the children’s development.

Outdoor Play: We will be playing outdoor play every day that weather permits. Our activities will include walks, playground, water play, bike/toy riding and others.

NAPS / QUIET TIME

There will be a designated nap/rest time each day. Rest time gives everyone a much needed break during the day. Without rest time, some children are argumentative in the afternoon, short- tempered with other children and not real happy when they go home in the evening.

TOILET TRAINING

We expect the children to be toilet-trained before they commence the toddler class. We do understand however, that accidents happen and recommend that each child has a change of clothes in school apart from the uniform provided.

RELIGION

Religious teaching will be left up to each individual family. Regardless, please do not expect our day to be completely devoid of any religious activities.

We may pray before we start our day and each meal will begin with a prayer of gratitude. Occasionally we sing a few bible songs, because several of the children really enjoy that. Although we hope parents will be the ones who explain all of the important issues to their children, questions about death, etc. are bound to come up. We will mention God or Heaven in simple explanations to the children.

We will celebrate Christian holidays and give actual reasons for these holidays to the children. This means that Christmas will be about Jesus Christ’s birth and not about elves and reindeer. In a similar manner, Easter will be a celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and not about Easter bunnies. We will mention and explain other religious holidays but not celebrate them.

CLEANLINESS/HYGIENE

We do our best maintain strict cleanliness and hygiene standards. Children’s hands are washed before and after meals and after toileting. Each child has a separate nap mat. Please provide sheets, blankets and pillows that are washed weekly. Mats are wiped with disinfectant.

Parents need to supply a couple of extra changes of clothing each day.

FIELD TRIPS

Occasionally, we may have the opportunity to take a field trip. We welcome parents who choose to participate in the field trip, you will be required to make other arrangements for your child for that day. You will be required to sign a permission slip.

If you do not wish for your child to participate in the field trip, you will be required to make other arrangements for your child for that day.

There will be no reduction in the tuition for the field trip day.

BIRTHDAYS

A child celebrating his/her birthday may come to school dressed in home clothes. They may bring along a cake and a moderate party/goodie bag (not larger than 12’ x 12’) drinks to share with their classmates. This should be submitted to the child’s teacher along with serviette, plates and a knife for the cake.

Not more than 2 adults will be allowed into the classroom for the celebration. Under no circumstances will a camera man be allowed into the classroom to take pictures. Candles and matches are not permitted for safety reasons.

It is customary for every child to bring in a book on their birthdays and present it as a donation to the class library. This will be acknowledged in the week’s class newsletter.

BOOK BAGS

Each child has a book bag given to him/her by the school for use during the school term. This helps prevent damage to the child’s books. We ask that it be kept properly. Damaged bags will be replaced for a fee of N3,000.

KIDS COURT MONTESSORI ILLNESS POLICY

The following illness policies will be strictly enforced, for the health, well-being and safety of all concerned.

Sick Child Policy: Under no circumstances may a parent bring a sick child to school, if the child shows any signs of illness (see SYMPTOMS REQUIRING REMOVAL OF CHILD), or is unable to participate in the normal and regular day program. Sick children expose other children, as well as staff, to the spread of their illness and require additional care and attention that we are UNABLE to give. Moreover, sick children want care from their parents in the comfort of their own homes. If other children become ill due to exposure to your sick child, either because he/she was returned to school before full recovery or because he/she was not picked up promptly upon notice of becoming ill, other parents will be unnecessarily inconvenienced. Because this is disruptive to other children and their families, your cooperation on this issue is extremely important.

Every effort is taken to reduce the spread of illness by encouraging hand washing and other sanitary practices (see Cleanliness and Hygiene)

15 “To aid life, leaving it free, however, to unfold itself, that is the basic task of the educator

If your child is unable to participate in normal activities of the day, (including being able to play outside), then your child must stay home.

Children will be visually screened when they arrive in the morning. In the event a child becomes ill and needs to be picked up, the parents will be called and are expected to come and pick the child up within one hour (60 minutes). If the parents cannot be reached, or have not arrived within an hour, the emergency contact person will be called and asked to come pick the child up.

For the benefits of our staff and other children in our care, a sick child will not be permitted to return to care for 24hours after the child condition returned to NORMAL. The child may return 24 – 48 hours (depending upon the illness) after they have received the first dose of an antibiotic. If a child receives an antibiotic for an ear infection, he may return to school immediately if he has been free of other symptoms mentioned for at least 24 hours. If you aren’t sure about whether or not to bring your child to school, PLEASE CALL US TO DISCUSS IT. Allergy related symptoms, and non- communicable illness do not require exclusion

SYMPTOMS REQUIRING REMOVAL OF CHILD FROM OUR CARE

The Parents’ Committee is very supportive of school’s activities. It comprises a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and PR officer. The school Director attends all meetings with the school Administrator.

The Parents’ Committee organizes a number of events over the academic year such as the Family Fun day at the end of the year.

PARENT EDUCATION SERIES

There are three compulsory parent’s education classes for all parents. The purpose of these classes is to give parents adequate information on aspects of Montessori Education and child development. Parent attendance and participation is a critical element in ensuring the fullest benefits of a Montessori education for your child.

The best way for parents to understand their child’s school experience is to observe in the classroom Parents not only learn what their child is doing; they also see Montessori principles in action.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES

In the Nursery School, we have a continuous observation/evaluation process. The Parent/Teacher conferences are for the purpose of discussing such observations and evaluations. We will hold them 3 times during the school year at the end of term.

In the Elementary School, pupils will take written tests at half term and at the end of term. The parent-teacher conferences are for the purpose of discussing observations through the term and communicating written evaluations.

SPECIAL SNACK DAYS

Every day, our children take a mid-morning snack. On Fridays, we ask that a parent treat the class to a snack. Please limit the snack to light items such as fruits, crackers, cup cakes (no icing). It is necessary to ensure such snacks have low sugar content so the children don’t get wired up. Sign-up sheets will be posted in each class or at the front office.
