Vee-Jay: A Classic Comeback

A&R Director Steve Clark andCal Carter, Vee-Jay's Chicago -

based A&R Vice President.

HOLLYWOOD - In a coun-try where prosperity is takenfor granted, and in a businesswhere Horatio Alger storiesare commonplace, it is difficultto find a success story that isunique enough to rate specialnotice and even more difficultto find one that stirs the imag-ination. Yet, when RecordWorld talked with Randy Wood,President of Vee-Jay Records, and Executive Vice PresidentJay Lasker, it was hard to stopwriting because of the manyexciting stories they were tell-ing about this company thatonly one year ago was in direstraits.

The beginning and early suc-cesses of Vee-Jay Records arealso of interest if one is to getthe complete picture of thecompany and fully appreciatethe magnitude of their recentadvancements. In 1951, Vivianand Jimmy Bracken decided toenter the record business byrecording the rhythm and bluesand gospel songs the customersof their Gary, Ind., record storehad been asking for. Theynamed the label after theirown initials, Vee-Jay.

During the first 10 years ofits existence Vee-Jay grewsteadily with consistent salesin the gospel and blues fields, and by 1961 they were able toboast perhaps the largest cata-log of major artists in thisfield.

In 1961, the company signedits first white artists, The FourSeasons. That was also theyear Vee-Jay had its first mil-lion dollar gross. During thefollowing two years, with morewhite artists on the label, andthe integration of some whitestaff members, the companytripled its gross to four millionin 1963.

Expansion also brought se-vere financial strain. Despiteits impressive grosses, the com-pany was heavily in debt andwas unable to pay its astro-nomical production, distribu-tion and pressing bills.

It was at this time that 37 -year -old Randy Wood was made

Jay Lasker, Steve Clari., Randy Wood, Mark- Unbeatable Vee-Jay Records leaders.

Sands

President of Vee-Jay, andBracken and Wood, determinedto save the company, broughtin Jay Lasker and financialwizard Mark Sands. The newlyformed executive combineworked out the financial detailswhich staved off disaster andbegan a new period of growth.

LA, Chi. NY CommutersThat growth was fantastic -

an almost unbelieveable re-covery in an industry fraughtwith financial peril. With Sandsdeftly manipulating the highlycomplicated monetary difficul-ties, a West Coast team of ap-proximately 12 individuals lit-erally commuted daily betweenLos Angeles, Chicago and NewYork. Twenty -four-hour workdays were not unusual, andmeetings frequently took place

in all three cities in less thantwo days.

The efforts of this teamwere almost inhuman, but to-day they are only a part ofthe many successes that haveplaced Vee-Jay among the top10 major record producers, distributing records under fivedifferent labels with offices allover the world and a staff of76 in its busy West Hollywoodheadquarters.

Wood and Lasker give agreat deal of credit for theirfinancial success to the abilityof Mark Sands; but Wood hasalso stated, "When you put allthese factors together they maylook great, but we do not dis-count luck. Who would havethought The Beatles would beso successful?"

In addition to luck (and Vee-

Vee-Jay Prexy Randy Wood and Bill Siege_,National Sales Director.

Muriel Gaynor, head of Vee-Jay's production department,

with Jay Lasker.

Jay's catalog), executive imag-ination and skill of the youngrecord men who run the com-pany's day-to-day operationhave played an important rolein the miraculous success storyof Vee-Jay. Each member of"the team" is a veteran of thebusiness and a specialist in hisfield. Lasker is 39, and duringhis 19 years in the recordingbusiness has held such toppositions as National SalesManager for Reprise and Kapp.Thirty -year -old Steve Clark, recently appointed head of thecompany's Tollie label, joinedVee-Jay's A & R departmentfive years ago to work withCalvin Carter. About Carter,Lasker says "Cal has single-handedly come up with morehits than almost any other manin the business."

As leader of the organization,Wood looks back on a careerthat began at 15 when he waspacking classical records in Co-lumbia's mail room and pro-gressed through sales and A &R jobs for such companies asKapp and Imperial before join-ing Vee-Jay four years ago asWestern sales head. Wood'sabilities are shown by his rapidadvancement to the positionsof sales manager, general man-ager, executive vice presidentand his present position ofpresident which resulted fromthe company's re -organizationin 1963.

Imagination Credited

If skill is 50 per -cent of thereason for Vee-Jay's currentfinancial stability and wealth, imagination certainly should begiven most of the other halfof the credit, for the companyis determined to break awayfrom the standard traditions ofthe record industry. For ex-ample: Vee-Jay refuses tospace the release of singles andalbums evenly, so too many are'lever released at one time;they created the highly -success-ful Oldies 45 idea and are add-ing another innovation, Oldies

Crosby Steals Show FromRobin & The Seven Hoods

BY DOUG McCLELLANDIt seems like only yesterday

that pop music fans around theworld were divided into twoequally vociferous factions: pro -Sinatra and pro -Crosby. Thevery young, in the main, favoredthe bow -tied reed who couldsway to big band backing andemit sounds that had more thana passing acquaintance with thelyrics of a song. The more ma-ture leaned toward the sweetLeilaniisms of the casual trou-badour that was Crosby. Butthat was 20 years ago.

Today, The Voice and TheGroaner are appearing in a newWarner Brothers color filmusi-cal, one of the rare originalfilmusicals these days, "Robinand The Seven Hoods," with adelightful score by Sammy Cahnand Jimmy Van Heusen. Whowins? Who's comparing, at thislate date? Both Sinatra andCrosby have long since estab-lished themselves as topflight,all-around, individual perform-ers. And besides, they are hard-ly "teamed" in this pleasant bitof fluff-don't be put off by theprecious title and theme. Pro-ducer Sinatra plays the head ofa 1920s Chicago mob, and issurrounded by Dean Martin(still able to throw awayunfunny lines in a funnymanner), Sammy Davis, Jr.(still doing his imitations andjumping on the furniture),one Hank Henry (amusing as agum -chewing mobster with asmuch film footage as the stars),Barbara Rush (the most matureMaid Marian on record) andPeter Falk (as Sinatra's enemy, who delivers the picture's bestlines with a bit too much of theoverly precise calculation of aPeter Sellers). As Alan A. Dale, the prim orphanage secretarywith a price, Crosby probablyhas the least to do among theprincipals in this "Robin Hood" -"Little Caesar" -"Guys andDolls" spoof.

But what Crosby (now 60)has, Crosby makes count. Hesteals the two -hour -plus picture, and with little more than a cou-ple of numbers. Admirably aid-ed by Sinatra and Martin hedoes a magnificent job on thedandy "Style"-which Der Binglecertainly has, in the finest artis-tic sense. The tune recalls the off-hand elegance of those two mar-velous old Crosby -Astaire filmduets, "A Couple of Song AndDance Men" (from "BlueSkies") and "I'll Capture YourHeart Singing" (from "Holiday

Inn"). To say nothing of theseemingly spontaneous fun ofnumerous vocal teamings withHope and Lamour on the "Road"movies. Then there's "Don't Bea Do-Badderer" which Crosbysings with a bunch of orphansand which is no orphan but a di-rect descendant of his 1944 "Go-ing My Way" -Academy Award -winning song, "Swinging on aStar (also co -written by VanHeusen 1. It's a honey of a scenein which The Star effortlesslyushers the audience into a velvetvice; a typical Crosby offering:refreshing to the young whothink "Officer Krupke" from"West Side Story" is all you cando with a gang of kids in a mu-sical number, and warminglynostalgic to oldsters who remem-ber a more humane era in filmu-sicals when Crosby was doingthis kind of special service al-most every season. This may beCrosby's smallest part sincereaching stardom (and institu-tion status) 30 -odd years ago(excluding guest shots), but, thanks to these two memorableinterludes, it is not a role heneed regret accepting. Much ofthe best of it is on the RepriseRecords soundtrack album.

Sinatra, looking well withadded poundage, also pleaseswith a surprisingly self-effacingperformance. His best number:"Chicago-My Kind of Town,"a superbly Sinatra kind of song. And this is one of the delights ofthe score. Cahn and Van Heusenhave accomplished the difficultfeat of composing attractivetunes that fit the distinct andunique personalities of the wellknown leads. Gordon Douglas di-rected with just the right dis-regard for reality.

Added bonuses: unbilled ap-pearances by Edward G. Robin-son, Hans Conreid, Dick (TV's"Sgt. Preston of The Yukon")Simmons, and (billed) PhilipCrosby (Bing's son) and old-time film character actors AllenJenkins and Jack La Rue.

The verdict on "Robin": light, not always bright of book, butnevertheless fetching family en-tertainment, far from also-ranClan.

Bill Newman, a co -director ofthe chain taking the bets, saidhe'd gotten the idea afterwatching the habits of teen-agers. "They spend money inrecord shops, on clothes andhair-dos-but they don't everseem to bet."

Evidently that all changedafter the disk bets were addedto the gambling favorites. Teenswere turning out in large num-bers to put their money wheretheir record player was.

Pic Composer JarreBeholds Bright DayOscar Winner Talks On Scoring& Latest, 'Behold Pale Horse'BY DAVE FINKLE

NEW YORK - Colpix Rec-ords has been skedding a bigrelease of soundtrack albumsover the last few months ("TheNEW Interns," "Hey, ThereIt's Yogi Bear" and "The LongShips") and announced twoweeks ago a list of three morefilm score LPs - one of which,"Behold a Pale Horse," wasreleased last week in conjunc-tion with the New York open-ing of the Gregory Peck -Anthony Quinn adventuremovie. (The other two are"Nothing But the Best" and"Lilith").

In New York for the "Horse"opening, along with others in-volved in the pic, was the com-poser of the soundtrack, 40 -year -old French darer MauriceJarre, who although never hav-ing worked in Hollywood, hasbecome over the last few yearsone of the most important Holly-wood composer -arrangers.

It was Jarre who wrote theOscar -winning score for "Law-rence of Arabia," the fourthAmerican -backed film he scored.

It was Jarre who scored "TheLongest Day."

Since completing work withFred Zinnemann's "Behold aPale Horse," Jarre has finishedthe score for the upcoming

This is a rather formidablelist of credits, and Jarre toldRecord World (in part throughan interpreter) the history be-hind some of the credits lastweek. He began by talkingabout his "Lawrence of Arabia"score (Colpix's most successfultracker to date), which heturned out in six weeks under

Director Don Blocker is con-vinced that today's record mar-ket demands versatile producers.

He points this up with thecase of George Martin, who canrecord a ballad with Matt Mon-ro, then turn around and helma Beatles blockbuster.

"Versatility seems to be oneof Martin's real attributes,"said Blocker. "In 1962, we had ahit with Martin's production of'Softly, As I Leave You,' andnow it's happening all overagain. We have re -issued ouroriginal single and it's breakingwide open in almost every situ-ation."

COAST

CAPERS'The Emperor

BY TED RANDALHOLLYWOOD-One of the most successful station promo-

tions to come along in years is the one currently being usedby Bob Hudson on KRLA.

Several months ago Bob decided to dub himself "EmperorHudson" and play the role to the hilt. The entire station wentalong with the idea, even to the point of building daily promo-tional spots urging listeners to send in their names and address-es and become lieutenants in "Hudson's Commandos." As onemight imagine, "Emperor Hudson" soon became the talk of theentire Los Angeles market, and as a result his ratings showhim to be the most popular disk jockey in the entire area.

There are several reasons why the promotionhas been so succesful: one is that it is comical, yet almost believable. Listeners enjoy one ofBob's "aides" telling them to "Clear the free-ways; Emperor Hudson is going to use them."Another, is that it is not merely something onedisk jockey on the station is doing, it is a pro-motion the entire station participates in andapparently enjoys. It is fun, always fresh, almostbelievable and complete.

Many other stations around the country havepicked up the idea with varying degrees of

success or failure depending entirely on the featured deejayand how well the promotion is handled. A good lesson can belearned from KRLA's success and Bob Hudson's accomplish-ment: It isn't so much what you do, it's how well you do itthat counts.

Oscar Winner Jarre(Continued from page 19)

conditions that weren't entirelyfavorable to him.

A late addition to the movie'sproduction staff, he was notwith the film at all until afterthe long shooting had been com-pleted and for that reason wasunable to do the preliminarypreparation work that evolvesfrom working with a projectfrom its inception. Of his Acad-emy Award score, Jarre said,"If I had been with the picturefrom the start, it would havebeen better."

His work on "Pale Horse"evidently pleased him more, since he accompanied the crewthrough shooting and was ableto formulate his approach to thescore more intimately. He dis-cussed this intimate approach-the ease of working with asmall orchestra-and the inher-ent problem of the particularscore.

The tale is one of pursuit, inwhich the pursuer (Quinn) andthe pursued (Peck) get increas-ingly involved in a "spiral,"Jarre explained. His job was tosuggest this tightening involve-ment of two personailties. Hismusic, he feels, reflects the in-trospection of the characters

Vee-Jay Story(Continued I ruer 'ot 14 )

33; they are constantly comingup with new merchandisingideas for the teen market suchas their new "magazine" coverto be used on the re -packagingof their most successful Beatlesalbum.

Realizing the importance of astrong artist roster as well asa catalog that continues to sell,Vee-Jay has been out beatingthe bushes for undiscovered orunexploited talent. New addi-tions to the label are SamFletcher, The Clinger Sisters,Hoyt Axton, Georgia Carr andJimmy Boyd. They're not for-getting top -sellers either, likeJerry Butler, Betty Everett,Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hookerand, of course, The Beatles.

Though Vee-Jay is movingahead faster than the speed ofits own sound, both Wood andLasker insist the company isfinancially conservative. Thecompany also projects a year-end gross of approximatelyeight or nine million, but iftheir sales continue at the pres-ent rate they will probably doaround 12 million. Asked abouttheir continued conservatism,Lasker retorted, "It keeps ustrying harder."

rather than mirroring thegrandiose Spanish settingagainst which the drama plays.

Using music to suggest "in-ner emotion" rather than set-ting seems to be one of Jarre'sprime concerns, since he feelsthat music in the movies shouldonly be used "when there's noth-ing else to make the point."

This aim of his is an exten-sion of his main criticism offilm scoring, which is: "There'salmost always too much music."

To emphasize this point, hementioned that his favoritemovie scoring of his own wasthat for "Sundays and Cybele.""There were only three instru-ments and no more than fiveminutes of music in that movie, but it was all well placed."

"Music should be used as acounterpoint to complement theimage," he said, "not repeat it."

Jarre will soon be representedby a Colpix single of the maintheme from "Pale Horse." Forthis he has reworked the musicto give it more meaning as aseparate entity. He does not, however, change any of his ar-rangements for his soundtracksas, for instance, Henry Manciniinsists on doing, since he feelsthat the audience would ratherhear on a track exactly whatthey heard when they saw themovie. He's open to argumenton this point, though.

Jarre, a composer interestedvery much in experiment, hasplaced major emphasis in hisscoring on two unusual instru-ments-the citare and the ondemartinot. Both of them havequalities of eerie expectancy andmystery, definitely suggestive ofhuman fears and vulnerabilities.

As an experimenter Jarredoes as much as possible infilms, but finds that he is oftenrestricted by the necessities ofcollaboration and the compro-mise that is an essential part ofworking as a member of a team.To balance this, he sets asidethree or four months a year inwhich he works alone, workingout composition problems.

Jarre is anxious to get toHollywood and the recordingstudios, because, he said, Frenchsound stages are "terrible." Infact, he's used to getting out ofone Parisian recording room by6 every night, so that it can beused for its main purpose -a boxing arena.

Of film scoring, he concluded,"It's exciting when you're work-ing on a score, but when you'refinished, the score becomes a sadthing. It's over. It's no longeralive. A part of you is left be-hind."

Local MerchandisingSelling Key: Levine

NEW YORK-To insure thewidest possible audience for aproduct there must be totalmerchandising at the local level,Joseph E. Levine, showman -producer and President of Em-bassy Pictures, said here lastweek at a Hemisphere Clubpress conference unveiling thecampaign for his new Para-mount Pictures release, "WhereLove Has Gone," starring Su-san Hayward and Bette Davis.

Levine said, "There is a lotof talk about techniques andconcepts, but there is only oneway to sell, and that's the hardsell." Levine noted that he andParamount were particularlyfond of a word that many inthe motion picture industry calloldfashioned: "exploitation."This will be a key element inthe campaign for "Where LoveHas Gone," he said, and it willalso be the key element in thecampaigns of Kapp Records,Pocket Books and others asso-ciated with the picture.

Music will serve as a majorpromotional tool for "WhereLove Has Gone," Levine con-tinued, noting that grass rootspenetration of the title song bySammy Cahn and Jimmy VanHeusen has started threemonths in advance of openings. The key factor in the musicpromotion is the tie-up with

New JukeboxSpins & Sells

WASHINGTON-Beingtouted as a possible answer tothe record industry's problemswith distribution and inventorycosts is a new jukebox whichnot only spins but sells records. The machine was patented re-cently by inventors William I.Alexander, publicist and adver-tising man, and Eliot S. Gerber.

Each machine would have upto 250 records which could beplayed by dropping a coin in aslot. When a buyer has chosenthe two sides of the record hewishes, he puts two quartersin a special slot and presses but-tons to pick the piece he hasselected. Thin "stampers," ormasters for the two selections, then press out the numbers on ablank disk. Copyright problemsmay ensue, however, along withtalent payment innovations.

The inventors believe theirsales method will cut retailcosts considerably and providethe consumer with quality disksat a low pirce. Alexander hasassigned his patent to MaydayInd., a holding company ofwhich he is head, as has Gerber.

C19BY ALAN FREEMAN

Alan Freeman

Aug. 27 creeps closer, and I'malmost at the stage when I cansmell and hear and feel NewYork! The more I think of 19glorious days away from camerasand microphones and records, the sweeter the smell, etc. andI only hope that you'll be kind toan over -worked, weary diskjockey and save me some of thatsunshine!

A recent Saturday night wasa sad one indeed for myself andcountless other pop fans whenour radios, TV screens and eve-ning newspapers flashed thenews of the tragic air disaster

that claimed the life of your Jim Reeves. (We felt he wasours too.) You probably know that he has two smash hits in theBritish charts - "I Love You Because" & "I Won't Forget You,"and just like Jim, we too were looking forward to his forth-coming tour over here with great enthusiasm. To me, his workprovided a necessary and welcome relief from the so often "runof the mill" pop world, and in my own collection his recordswill always be a treasured highlight.

What's happening over here? Well, last night was the firstbirthday of TV's "Ready Steady Go" pop program - and whoturned up? The Rolling Stones turned up. And after the showthe fans rioted outside the studio, and it took our magnificentLondon Bobbies to get The Stones away . . and alive! Astheir car raced off one of the doors opened, hit something orother and snapped clean off. It was a case of the fans wereleft holding the door. If only people knew it, I'm the Westernworld's undiscovered Danny Kaye, and I must say we've beenEnjoying his shows over here on BBC -TV very much.

Have you seen The Beatles' film "A Hard Day's Night" yet?If you haven't, you must, because I have and it's fascinating. When and if ever their pop magic diminishes, it won't matter

much, because these boys have obviously got talent even theydon't know about. And the hit parade over here? The boysare still No. 1. A group of five members known as Manfred Mannhave slipped into No. 2 with a waxing entitled "Do Wah DiddyDiddy" (an oldie but a real 1964 swingin' revival). Your BeachBoys are almost in the Top 10 with "I Get Around." The StanGetz version of "The Girl From Ipanema" is being noticed verymuch. (And will someone tell me why Ipanema is pronouncedIf-an-ema? It's the "if" bit that bothers me.) Dionne Warwick's"You'll Never Get To Heaven" has come into calculations, and Imust say that The Animals appear to have taken you by stormas they did us. What is it about that record?! If it was halfa minute longer in duration, it could almost be a miniature.musical!

Oldham QuitsHaving mentioned The Rolling Stones, I must tell you that

a shock announcement came this week to the effect of theirjoint manager and recording boss Andrew Loog Oldham makingit known that at the tender age of 20, he's quitting the business! It appears he has an ulcer - has found the "Tough Life" allcrowding in on top of him and has decided to get out. It's a bitof a shame, because he's added a lot of flamboyant color to theBritish scene, and without doubt has been considerably respon-sible for the Stones' remarkable success. But you know, myguess is that before too many spins of the latest "Such a Night"Elvis Presley waxing (and I'll be in that particular spin),Andrew's ulcer will cry out in vain and say "Take me back toall this," and back he will come, more outrageous than ever!

I must tell you too that Peter of Peter and Gordon fame hasgone into hospital suffering with some ghastly complaint, andthey've had to cancel some TV dates. Now if only I were a malenurse, I could make sure that he's given all the right medicinesand pills and have him back on that stage in no time. I hopethe doctors and all those lovely nurses know what they're doing, because he's a very nice chappie, and Gordon needs him! Per-haps I could fill in with Gordon while he's recovering? No?Why are you all so determined not to let me sing?

Have I told you about Cilla Black's new release? I know she'sin the charts over on your side with "You're My World," but nowshe's singing a new John Lennon/Paul McCartney song, "It'sFor You." It's on the jazzy side, and I think only goes to showagain that Cilia's no flash in the pan.

Guess where I'm going tomorrow straight after my BBC radioshow? I'm off to Paris for a little bit of oo Is la! And what everyour translation of oo la la might be, mine is steak, wine, salad with French dressing, the Seine, the bistros and cardrivers who race around Place de la Concord who would evenmake Stirling Moss look tame. A happy oo la la to you, too!

Lieberson PianoPieces Published

Columbia Records PresidentGoddard Lieberson's "PianoPieces for Advanced Children orRetarded Adults" has recentlybeen published by Mills Music.Consisting of three volumes:"Five Songs Without Mendels-sohn," "Six Technical Studies(which will teach you nothing)"and "Eight Studies in Musi-cology (which will teach you agreat deal)," the collection con-tains musical caricatures withsuch amusingly appropriatetitles as "My Neighbor StudiesVoice," "Mozart Without OneMistake," "How To Be a SovietComposer" and "Tchaflcovsky'sLast Waltz."

The pieces, which vary intechnical difficulty from theeasy to the moderately chal-lenging, were written by Lieb-erson for his two sons, to beplayed either by them or tothem by their father.

Recorded by Andr6 Previn,"Piano Pieces for Advanced

Children or Retarded Adults"was released in a ColumbiaMasterworks LP in June. Whilesatirizing various musical con-ventions, the pieces were praisedfor their wit, charm and ex-pressivness.

Lieberson is also the composerof a String Quartet recordedby Columbia Records. His othercompositions include more pianoand chamber music as well asvocal and choral works set totexts of James Joyce and EzraPound, incidental music for thetheatre and a number of orches-tral works..

BY ED HAMILTONBig doings hereabouts las week included the Roger Miller

live album session at The Carousel for Smash Records. Attend -a nce was by invitation only, and they were literally hangingpeople from the rafters. Session was under the direction ofShelby Singleton and Jerry Kennedy with label head CharlieFach looking on. Also on hand for the session was Roger's man -tiger, Don Williams, brother of TV -record -film star Andy Wil-liams.

The "Rog" was at his finest and introduced a bagful of newsongs, one of which will be his follow-up to the hit single,"Dang Me." Musicians working the session were Jerry Kennedy, guitar, Buddy Harman, drums, and Bobby Dyson, bass. Thiswriter even got into the act introducing Miller on the album.

Into Music City a few days ago for a Columbia session wasthe Kai Winding group. One of the things they did that came(.ff great was the aforementioned Roger Miller's "Dang Me."As an instrumental, it comes off beautifully!

The word is officially out that guitarist Kelso Herston is nowA & R director for United Artists here. Kelso succeeds PappyDaily and Tommy Jackson who have moved over to the Musicorlabel. He is now in the process of building a new roster ofcountry artists for UA since all their c/w artists followedPappy and Tommy to Musicor.

Mercury's LeRoy Van Dyke was real fine on his two SteveAllen appearances last week. Too bad his band could not havebeen with him.

Smiley "Whip" Wilson is a very busy man at the Wil-HelmAgency. He just finished signing The Osborne Brothers ofDecca who are now signed as regulars on WSM's Grand OleOpry. The boys could be on the way to their biggest recordever with "Charlie Cotton." Another of Smiley's boys, Earl Scott, recently signed a Decca contract and was recorded by OwenBradley a few weeks ago. Those who have heard the sessionsay it's his greatest ever.

There's also another new act in the Wil-Helm family now, this one delivered by the stork! Loretta Lynn is now proudlysporting the Lynn Twins, Peggy and Patsy, born Aug. 6. Mother, father and twins all doing fine. Even Smiley's about torecover. Stork was about a month late and was really foulingup his booking calendar.

30 Stars In RaceWell, the big Country Music Night was held last Tuesday

night at The Fairgrounds Speedway with about 30 stars andpersonalities entered in feature races. The first race which in-cluded 13 of the fastest cars of the night was won by Mercury'sRoy Drusky. Second place went to Hickory's Bobby Lord withMercury's Faron Young coming in third. Yours truly led therace for five laps and was ahead with a little over one lap togo when I tangled with Decca's Chuck Glaser on the backstretchand spun out. The second race was won by Monument's WillieNelson, with second place going to Epic's Stan Hitchcock.Faron, who had already run the first race and was not eligiblefor the second, sneaked a car into the race and won it, but wasdisqualified and the trophy went to Nelson.

Other stars driving were UA's George Jones, RCA's JimEdward Brown, Hubert Long, Decca's Glaser Brothers, Cedar -wood's Jack Andrews; Decca's Earl Scott, Monument's FredCarter, Capitol's Billy Graves, WSM's Ralph Emery, Starday'sTommy Hill, Charlie Dick, Music City News' Preston Temple,Billboard's Don Light, Colpix's Eddie Kilroy, Shorty Lavender. There were many others I can't remember, so, fellas, forgive mefor forgetting.

Columbia's Claude King doing his hobbling act as a resultof a water skiing accident down in Shreveport. What in the SamHill's going on, Claude?

Chicago viewers of WGN-TV's Barn Dance will be seeingmore of Capitol's Sonny James and Columbia's Marion Worth. They just finished filming future episodes. Deal was set byBob Neal.

Classical Corner: RCA's New Releases

Victor's Red Seal Has 3 Big Ones: Price's'Carmen,' Rubinstein's Chopin & 'Emperor'

RCA Victor Records has comeup with a strong list of Augustproduct, some of which maymake make the best seller charts. You can look for early appear-ances of the new Price-Karajan"Carmen" as well as the two newRubinstein packages (the Cho-pin Waltzes and the Beethoven"Emperor"). All are top-draw-er RCA product with built inname appeal.

Price -Von Karajan "Carmen"Although the De Los Angeles -

Beecham "Carmen" on Angelhas been a top seller, "Carmen"was a sitting duck for a sensa-tional new recording by a dreamcast. This is exactly what wehave in the RCA deluxe Soriapackage.

To begin with "Carmen" isone of the five most popularoperas, way up there in salesappeal along with "Butterfly,""Boheme," "Rigoletto" a n d"Aida." It's full of jolly goodfolk tunes, like the "Seguidilla,""Habanera," "Toreador Song."As they did for the best-selling"Tosca," also made in Vienna.RCA has reunited three namesthat soprano Leon-tyne Price; conductor HerbertVon Karajan and album pro-ducer John Culshaw who notonly records an opera but stagesit for the ear as well. Your earsfollow all the stage action-andin "Carmen" there's plenty of it.Culshaw has a long list of out-standing opera recordings to hiscredit on the London label, andhe's the outstanding album pro-ducer of operas today.

What makes this "Carmen"an event is not only the sensa-tional recording which stagesthe opera for the living roombut the brilliant singing of Le-ontyne Price who's a born "Car-men." Her solid middle, her bril-liant top and the bite of herlows captures the full -range ofthe hot-tempered Carmen. Tomillions of Price fans the RCArecording will mark the firsttime they hear her in this role. She has never sung it in theopera house-but if she cancome up with a stage perform-ance that matches the fire andexcitement she brings to the re-cording-it should be one of theMet's biggest hits and spursales of "Carmen" ever higher.

In addition to Price there'sHerbert von Karajan who leadsa superbly organized perform-ance. After the pomp of theopening, he holds everythingdown until Carmen's entrance. The effect is stunning. He con-

Leinsdorf's Mahler 5th Released;Victrola Has Moffo's 'Butterfly'

ducts a leisurely performancewhich gives the music time tobreathe. It is a performance thatreveals many subtleties glossedover in other performances andeven in the opera house. VonKarajan has his own ViennaPhilharmonic to work with andthe strings and winds play witha radiant warmth, a roundnessof tone that's never less than be-witching.

Franco Corelli essays his fa-vorite role, Don Jose, and hisbrilliant, ringing top is a joy tohear. An old-timer in the role ofthe toreador Escamillo, RobertMerrill turns in his usual tri-umphant performance. MirellaFreni makes a fetching Micaelawith her exciting vocal qualities. But the real star of the record-ing is John Culshaw who hasstaged it in a very exciting way.The duets, trios, the quintetsare beautiful to hear. The dis-tant sounds of the dragoons inthe hills; the grand climax ofthe opera with its two dramasoccurring simultaneously-Esca-millo's victory in the arena andthe murder of Carmen by DonJose directly outside it-is su-perbly captured, especially instereo.

The deluxe Soria set includesa handsome, 64 -page art booldet,a masterpiece of the graphic artsillustrated with many photos, drawings of costumes and set-tings.

"Carmen" 7-IncherTo get the widest possible

radio play on its "Carmen," RCAhas serviced a special 45 rpm 7 -inch single containing two "A"sides: "Habanera" sung by Le-ontyne Price and "ToreadorSong" sung by Robert Merrill.A two-color sleeve explains thatthese cuts are taken from thefull album. Promotional singleshould get plenty of air playon good music pop album sta-tions, and who knows but whatit might break onto the popcharts !

Two From RubinsteinArtur Rubinstein is at it

again. He's having a ball in hislatest albums: Chopin's Waltzesa n d Beethoven's "Emperor"Concerto. Rubinstein has ownedthe Chopin literature on recordsfor many years. His earlier, mono -only recording of the 14

Waltzes was a best-seller; nowhe's re-recorded them in Dyna-groove and the results are thrill-ing in every way.

From the standpoint of re-cording this is one of Rubin -stein's best piano disks to date. The recording captures the nu-ance of Rubinstein's playingfrom a whispering piano to athundering forte.

Rubinstein's Steinway hasrarely sounded as full or as spa-cious. The dynamics of the in-strument are a joy to hear. Thealbum has to be a smash withnumbers like the Grand ValseBrillante which everybody knowsin his Glazunov orchestration asone of the hit numbers in theballet "Les Sylphides." Albumalso includes the ever -popular"Minute Waltz" which Rubin-stein tosses off with a thrillingbravura. Call it chemistry, if youwill, no one brings the rich pa-lette of colors, the innate senseof lyricism, the intuitive senseof accent, that Rubinstein bringsto his fellow Pole Chopin.

A truly grand "Emperor" isat hand in this new Rubinsteinrecording which brings him to-gether for the second time withLeinsdorf and the Boston. Un-like their first collaboration(Tchaikovsky's First Piano Con-certo) which was a curiously un-even performance, this n e w"Emperor" is a winner all theway with well -deserved laurelsgoing to Leinsdorf, the Bostonand Rubinstein. What makesthis "Emperor" grand is theleisurely pace with which themusic unfolds. There is majestyin the way Rubinstein plays theopening cadenzas. He allowsthem to peal forth with a fullsense of the heroic dynamism.Leinsdorf seems to take his cuefrom Rubinstein as he proceedsto reveal the mighty structureof the exposition. He projectsthe full symphonic impact ofthis exposition and makes uswonder whether we are to heara symphony or a concerto. Thisis good. Leinsdorf's frameworkfor Rubinstein, unlike Krips' inthe earlier Rubinstein record-ing, provides much greater ten-sion between soloist and orches-tra. This brings out a sense ofstruggle and accomplishmentmissing from the earlier record-ing which is slicker by compari-son. An outstanding album

which shows how much Rubin -stein's conception has deepenedsince his earlier recording.

Leinsdorf's MahlerSuperb orchestral playing

marks Leinsdorf's first record-ing of Mahler's gigantic FifthSymphony. The second move-ment and the finale containsome of the finest playing theBoston has ever put on rec-ords. Leinsdorf's Boston Sym-phony revels in the manyfolk tunes from the AustrianTyrol Mahler wove into his ebul-lient finale. If it were to bejudged on the ground of out-standing orchestral playing, thisnew Leinsdorf Mahler 5th wouldcome off first, hands down. How-ever, Columbia's Bernstein -NewYork Philharmonic issue, whichappeared a full five months pri-or to the new RCA issue has somuch to recommend it that RCAwill have to promote the newLeinsdorf to the hilt if it is togive the Bernstein stiff competi-tion at the market place. Goingfor Leinsdorf is the fact thathis recording of the MahlerFirst Symphony made the bestseller charts. It was one of theearliest Dynagroove records, andit had a multi -million dollartrade and consumer promotiongoing for it. Dynagroove isagain in evidence in this newMahler Fifth, brilliant -soundingall the way through. What thendoes the Bernstein have goingfor it? A five -month lead timeplus a performance which re-veals the surrealistic, the bi-zarre, what Bruno Walter called"the demoniac" side of Mahler.Leinsdorf's sounds too healthy, too sunshiny. For instance, theopening Funeral March is full ofdespair in the Bernstein. In theLeinsdorf, the emphasis is onbeautiful sound-but the de-spair, the heaviness of death ismissing. In the Scherzo, Bern-stein gives us a very Jewish -sounding waltz with a rubatothat's made for this music. Hisdouble basses have more bite, they uncover more anguishamidst the light-headed joy. Inthe Adagietto, a beautiful songfor the strings and the most ac-cessible part of the symphony,Bernstein has a wistful tender-ness. Leinsdorf's is beautifullyplayed. The Boston string toneis pure gold but in expressivityhe must take a back seat toBernstein. Bernstein's record-ings of the Mahler Third andFourth Symphonies received ex -

cellent reviews and - judgingfrom retail sales movement-itlooks like Columbia has theMahler market pretty wellwrapped up between Walter andBernstein. RCA fills out theirfourth side with a recording ofexcerpts from Berg's "Woz-zeck" with the brilliant youngAmerican soprano Phyllis Cur-tin as Marie. Had RCA issued acomplete "Wozzock" at this timethey would have done extremelywell, as there is no new record-ing of the opera and the old, circa 1951, Columbia recordingwith Eileen Farrell and Mi-tropoulos conducting the NewYork Philharmonic, still sells.

trola, with a suggested list of$2.50 (mono) $3.00 (stereo),comes up with a sure-fire winnerin the reissue from its Red Sealseries of "Madame Butterfly."The gifted young Pennsylvaniasoprano Anna Moffo is Butter-fly; Cesare Valletti is Lieuten-ant Pinkerton and RosalindElias is Cio-Cio San. ErichLeinsdorf directs the Rome Op-era House Orchestra. Dealersaware of the fabulous sales suc-cess of "Tosca" (the first operareissued Victrola) will knowthat this "Butterfly" has a rosysales future ahead of it. Operabuyers will flock to this bargain -priced set which will be a greattraffic -maker displayed in depthwith the price prominently dis-played. Dealers can sell this inthe $5.00-$6.00 price range andMill turn a profit.

Other strong Victrola prod-uct: "Festival of Russian Music"with Reiner and the ChicagoSymphony with favorites like"Marche Slav" and "Night onBare Mountain." Reiner's Chi-cago Orchestra is a collection ofvirtuosi. Their performances arenever less than excellent. A"must" for beginning classicalcollectors. Beginning classicaldevotees are also the vast mar-ket for the Victrola reissueof the famous Munch -BostonBrahms First Symphony. Nowthat Leinsdorf has re-recordedit in Dynagroove, the older Bos-ton, a thoroughly respectable re-cording, belongs on the bargain -priced label. As Leinsdorf re-records the basic repertory withthe Boston, dealers can look for-ward to the reappearance of fa-

mous Munch -Boston recordingson the Victrola label.

From Norway comes a bril-liant -sounding recording ofGrieg's Piano Concerto by KjellBaekkelund and Incidental Mu-sic from "Peer Gynt" with theOslo Philharmonic conducted byOdd Griiner-Hegge. If memoryserves, this was the same teamthat had a brilliant -soundingperformance of Rachmaninoff'sSecond Concerto on Camden afew years ago. The repertoireis strong-but we doubt whetherthe relatively unknown Scandi-navian artists will be able tocompete with the by -far -biggernames Victrola has offered bar-gain hunters.
