Pepper Sales Mgr. InCapitol ON Expansion
NEW YORK - Plans for afull-scale sales and marketingexpansion in the booming coun-try-and-western field by CapitolRecords Distributing Corp. wererevealed this week by WilliamB. Tallant, Jr., VP and NationalSales Manager, CRDC.
Cornerstone of the campaignis the appointment of WadePepper to the newly createdposition of CRDC Country/Western Sales Manager.
Pepper, long - time Capitolsales and promo executive, willheadquarter in Capitol's Nash-ville offices, where he will assumeresponsibility for sales and pro-motion of all C&W product, both singles and albums.
Pepper, currently headquar-tered in New York as CRDC'sSingles Sales and Promotionmanager, will leave for Nashvilleearly next month. A successorfor Pepper as single -record saleschief, will be announced in thenear future, according to Tal-lant. It is possible he will comefrom the West Coast.
Pepper joined CRDC 14 yearsago as a salesman in his home-town of Huntington, W. Va.Three years laterPittsburgh in a similar capacity, and shortly thereafter to At-lanta, where he served for twoyears as Branch Sales Managerand for eight years as DistrictSales Manager. He becamesingles sales -and -promotion man-ager in May, 1964.
During his 10 years in At-lanta, Pepper dealt extensivelywith C&W stations and dealersthroughout the South. A mem-ber of the Country Music Asso-ciation, he is regarded as anexpert in the C&W field.
Market Growth Evident"Growth of the market has
been evident for some time,"Tallant said. "Large Northerncities such as Chicago withWJJD, Los Angeles with KGBSand Newark with WJRZ, havebeen highly successful and haveshown that C&W is not justmusic for one section of thecountry or for small towns.Sales have been another keyfactor. Today, top C&W artistslike Buck Owens sell better thanmany pop stars.
"We have felt that the salesand potential of our C&W acts, and the introduction of newC&W artists, could be greatlyfacilitated if we had a concen-trated effort-and the only, placethat effort could come fromwould be the heart of the busi-ness, Nashville."
Wade PepperCap C/W Sales Manager
Tallant also said that Pepper'snew duties would take him intopop markets in an attempt to getairplay for C&W product onthose stations. It was Pepperwho first succeeded in securingTop 40 airplay for Buck Owens,Sonny James and many otherCapitol C&W artists.
Pepper pointed out that theC&W market has changed radi-cally since he first entered it."In the past few years, the LPhas been accepted by C&Wbuyers and a new type of pro-gramming has been developed-top 40 type tight formats-bythe new C&W stations."
Pepper said he would spenda good deal of his time activelyworking with CRDC field person-nel on specific country titles, current artists, and in tryingto establish new stars for thelabel.

Buck Owens'Big Months
BY DOUG McCLELLAND
NEW YORK - The nextcouple of months are going tobe mighty big ones, even forBuck Owens.
In town last week to buy aRolls Royce and do "The JimmyDean Show" (for Jan. 21), thechart -busting country star fromBakersfield, Calif. (he's neverrecorded in Nashville) toldRecord World all about it.
Buck Owens Month
First, and foremost, CapitolRecords is setting Buck OwensMonth for February, with somevery nice things in store forBuckophiles who long ago beganspreading to the pop scene ingreat number. There will be anew album by Buck, "Roll Outthe Red Carpet," comprisingmostly original tunes mostlyby Buck; and another LP called"Buck Owens' Songbook," fea-turing Owens favorites as doneby his Buckaroos.
Capitol, of course, will havean all-out campaign for BuckOwens Month-he had anotherMonth only last August thatproved a boon for all. (Label'sKen Nelson records him.)
Early in April, Buck will starthis first starring feature film,"Walk Proudly, Young Man,"to be distributed by UniversalPictures.
"It's my first real actingpicture," Buck explained, "al-though I sang in a movie once. This is a dramatic role, aboutan entertainer and his strugglesto make it and the character'sname is Toad Williams. WhenI first heard that name, I saidthat's gotta go. But I thoughtabout it for a while, and nowthe name seems okay. The pic-ture will be filmed in New Mex-ico and will be in color. I'll singabout a half -dozen songs, too."
On the subject of songs, songstress Jody Miller (also ofCapitol) has just recorded 13Buck Owens songs, 12 for anLP, one for a single. Owensalso has an unusual packagecoming up in April, an albumof 12 original songs of inspira-tion-"Not too bad, doing threealbums in four months." He alsohas "Before You Go" (as wellas "Instrumental Hits of BuckOwens and the Buckaroos").Buck's newest single is "Waitin'in Your Welfare Line," his pre-vious and still hot one, "Buck-aroo."
His Christmas deck, "SantaLooked a Lot Like Daddy," wasone of the top Yule sidings. Hewrote it with Don Rich.

Staying Home MoreHe insists, though, that he's
more selective and is spend-ing much more time at homethese days, a ranch in Bakers-field. "We get to be therewith the family quite often. Oneyear we were away about 300days. Last year we workedabout 100."
Buck's 17 -year -old son Buddy(one of three Owens children)recently wowed 8700 fans backhome in a Marine Corps "Toysfor Tots" joint benefit with dad,the lad's first public perform-ance. Did he have his father'sblessing for a show biz career?
"Not really," Buck said. "I'drather see him become a lawyeror doctor. But I think it maybe too late. I think he's got thebug."

RCA Giant Push on SSgt. SadlerRCA Victor Records is kick-
ing off 1966 with a new andunique artist, Barry Sadler, who will be given one of themost extensive all-out cam-paigns in label history.
Staff Sergeant Barry Sadleris 25, a member of the U.S.Army Special Forces' GreenBerets, a veteran of Viet Nam. . . and his face appears on thecover w over 1.5 million paper-
back copiesof "The GreenBerets."
But SSgt.Sadler isalso some-thing more.He is a com-poser andsinger, a n dhas has re-corded an al-
bum of his own compositions, inspired by his tour of dutyin Viet Nam. Entitled "Bal-lads of the Green Berets," thealbum will be on the marketby the end of January. Asingle, "The Ballad of theGreen Berets," b/w "Letterfrom Viet Nam," was releasedlast week.
The sessions were held inRCA Victor's Studio A onSaturday, Dec. 18, and wereattended by key executives ofthe Record Division. By 11p.m. that night the album, pro-duced by Andy Wiswell witharrangements by Sid Bass, wascompleted. Top level confer-ences were held during theweek that followed to map outan intricate advertising, pro-motion and press strategy.
First on the agenda was a"teaser" mailing and trade adcampaign. A promo kit whichincludes a biography, pictures, album information and a bro-chure on the U.S. Army Spe-cial Forces is being mailed toradio stations, members of thepress, one -stop and ops. A full-scale trade and consumer ad-vertising program commenceson Jan. 17.
Avon, publisher of "TheGreen Berets" in paperback, has arranged that a picture ofthe RCA album and credit linebe included in all future print-ings of the book. In return, a

mention of the Avon book ismade on the liner of the al-bum. In addition, RCA Victoris supplying extra quantitiesof mounted album covers toAvon, which will ship them di-rect to book stores and out-lets.
Wrote on DutySSgt. Sadler wrote his songs
while on duty in South VietNam in recent years. Entirelyself-taught in music, Sadlersings of the pleasures (few),the perils (many) and the dan-ger (unending) of service in theArmy's Green Berets in SouthViet Nam.
Sadler is alive today only be-cause of the rigorous trainingof the Special Forces (his spe-cialty was medics). Late lastspring, while leading a smallcombat patrol, he fell into amantrap and a pungi stake (apoisoned spear made of sharp-ened bamboo) plunged into hisleg. He operated on himself, draining the wound betweenfainting spells, and was ulti-mately found and carried tosafety.
Once back in the States, Sad-ler contacted a music pub-lisher to whom he had givenhis first song, "The Ballad ofthe Green Berets," the year be-fore. He now had with hima sheaf of new songs.
By chance, the publisher wasa friend of the author of "TheGreen Berets" who was look-ing for a model to pose as a"Green Beret" for the coverillustration of the then forth-coming Avon paperback editionof the book. As a result, it isBarry's face that appears onthe cover.
In natural sequence, Sadlerwas brought to the attentionof RCA Victor and was im-mediately put under contractand recorded.
Sadler is scheduled to makehis first national television ap-pearance Sunday, Jan. 30, on"The Ed Sullivan Show" overCBS -TV. A promotional tourwill be arranged as soon asSSgt. Sadler can be tempor-arily freed from his duties atFt. Bragg, N. C.

Although Time magazine justcalled the 20th Century Foxfilm of "The Sound of Music""the most surprising financialsuccess in decades" (in only131 theaters, it has grossed$20 million), movie makerswere not caught off guard.
Film f o 1 k had alreadychecked the boxoffice successof "Sound" plus other musicalbiggies "Mary Poppins" and"My Fair Lady" along withtheir soundtrack LP sales. Todate, "Sound" has sold over3,000,000 albums; "Mary," al-most 3,000,000; and "Lady",800,000. And ready or in vari-ous stages of preparation aresome of the most impressivefilmusicals since Ruby Keelerlast said, "Gee, Jimmy, thatwas swell !"
Getting the nuns seatedfirst, Debbie Reynolds willshortly follow Julie Andrews'"Sound of Music" singing nunwith her own version of a galwith the habit-in Debbie'scase, this vocalizing providesa commercial boom that reallygives Soeur Sourire somethingto smile about. MGM Recordswill release the soundtrack LP,as they did Debbie's last filmblockbuster, "The UnsinkableMolly Brown." Randy Sparkshas written the score for thisEaster -due epic, and "Domini-que" will be heard, too.
It looks as if Julie Andrewswill get to repeat her originalstage role in Warner Brothers'film of "Camelot"-Jack War-ner took it on the chin for giv-ing Julie's "Fair Lady" stagerole to Audrey Hepburn whenit was filmed, and is not likelyto want a repeat of history.Julie also is scheduled for theGertrude Lawrence story.
Other potential blockblustersUnited Artists (with LP rights,
Filmusicals FlurryBlockbuster Pictures and Albums
Ignite Movie Musical BoomBY DOUG McCLELLAND
too) has "A Funny Thing Hap-pened on the Way to theForum" for later this year,"How to Succeed in Businesswithout Really Trying" possiblyfor '67 and is after "Fiddleron the Roof" for early 1970-"Hello, Dolly" should also begetting filmed around then;"Funny Girl," from ColumbiaPictures and introducing Bar-bra Streisand to the screen;"Doctor Dolittle," starring RexHarrison, Anthony Newleyand Sidney Poitier, music, lyrics and screen play by Les-lie Bricusse; "Goodbye, Mr.Chips," Richard Burton star-ring, music by Andre Previnand wife Dory; "Penelope,"tunes by Paul Vance and LeePockriss; and-at last-"Fin-ian's Rainbow."
Elvis Presley always has atleast a couple of filmusicals inthe can (from which RCA Vic-tor can count on top chart LPpackages), and he's got apromising pair coming up:United Artists' "Frankie andJohnny" for the Easter, fol-lowed by Paramount's "Para-dise, Hawaiian Style."
Fellow-or sister-RCA rec-ord star Ann -Margret is alsoone of the screen's busieststars, frequently in films withmuch music. MGM's recentlycompleted "Maid in Paris"(with at least a title tune byBurt Bacharach and Hal Da-vid) and Paramount's stillfilming "The Swinger" (with
Debbie Reynolds (with guitar) entertains the other sisters ofSamaritan House and Father Ricardo Montalban in this scenefrom MGM's "The Singing Nun," coming for Easter as a majorfilm attraction and soundtrack LP.
ditto by the Previns) shouldhave pieces galore. But "Wild-cat," from the Lucille BallBroadway musical with songsby Cy Coleman and CarolynLeigh, will have even more.Ann -Margret has been set tostar for Columbia Pictures, probably her best screen breakto date. Victor, long lookingfor A -M's bag on records, mayfind itself with some hot waxfrom the gal at last.
Busy Walt Disney
Disney, of course, is in aclass by himself. Among hisfilmusical projects: an ani-mated featurette of "Winniethe Pooh"; an animated, fea-ture-length "Jungle Book";and the musicalization of theBroadway comedy, "The Hap-piest Millionaire." All willhave songs by those Oscar -winning "Mary Poppins" com-posers, Robert B. and RichardM. Sherman. "Millionaire,"with 14 tunes, will topcast FredMacMurray, Tommy Steele andLesley Ann Warren. All willbe (or are) released as Dis-neyland soundtrack albums.
Speaking of Tommy Steele, his "Half a Sixpence" Broad-way success is also slated forfilming.
Producer George Pal is afterAndy Griffith and Connie Ste-vens for his "Rip Van Winkle"tuner at Metro.
MGM Records' Connie Fran-cis has the current flick, "Whenthe Boys Meet the Girls," anupdating of the Gershwin"Girl Crazy," also starringHarve Presnell, Sam the Shamand the Pharaohs, Liberate,Louie Armstrong and Her-man's Hermits. (And MGMhas the soundtrack album.)
The last named two are duein other strongly musical of-ferings. Armstrong will be ap-pearing with Sammy Davis Jr.and Frank Sinatra Jr. in "AMan Called Adam," still shoot-ing in Manhattan; and Her-man's Hermits have a vehiclea la the Beatles in MGM's"Hold On !," which imagines aweek in the lives of the Her-mits. They have 10 numbers.Shelley Fabares co-stars andMGM will release the LP.
MGM also will be using RoyOrbison, the Righteous Broth -
(Continued on page 25)
Herman's Hermits hide theirlong hair for an incognito jauntin their new film vehicle, "HoldOn!" (Definitely not a sequelto the Beatles' "Help!") Asoundtrack LP will appear.
Connie Francis istine in this shot from the cur-rent updating of Gershwin's"Girl Crazy," now called "Whenthe Boys Meet the Girls," whilemale lead Harve Presnell playsthe waiting game. MGM has thealbum out already.
bidin' her
Elvis Presley, far right, looks onin a dramatic bit from his up-coming Paramount filmusical,"Paradise, Hawaiian Style."Also shown: Don Collins, Su-zanna Leigh and Julie Parrish.RCA will have the soundtrackLP, as well as the PresleyEaster presentation, UnitedArtists' "Frankie and Johnny."
22 RECORD WORLD-January 22, 1966
'Music City U.S.A.'
Record World Co-stars in FilmBY DAVE FINKLE
NEW YORK -A new colorfilm feature called "Music CityU. S. A.," concerning a deejay'svisit to Nashville during theCountry Music Festival, is justabout to be released.
To get the lowdown, RecordWorld, which plays an impor-tant part in the picture, talkedlast week to Preston Collins, thefilm's director and partner inGemini Pictures, Inc.
"We wanted to make a lowbudget country/western movie,"Collins explained, "and when weheard the disk jockey conventionwas coming up, we thought thetime was right. In about twoweeks' time we organized whatwe had to and went down tofilm. We lined up a lot of artists, gave them a sequence breakdownand shot."
The sequence breakdown wasthe closest Collins and associatesgot to a script, since they feltthat it was nonsensical to saddleNashvillians with what wouldprobably come out as cornponedialog. Instead, they let the per-formers express themselves asthey saw fit.
The freedom, Collins felt, wasalso in keeping with the loosestory line of "Music CityU. S. A." It deals with therounds T. Tommy Cutrer makeson a return to Nashville during
the deejay convention. Thecamera follows him as he goesto Roy Acuff's museum, the newColumbia studios, Ernest Tubb'srecord shack and runs into suchcountry artists as Webb Pierce,Autry Inman, Jean Shepard,Justin Tubb, Hilles Buttram,Jimmy Newman, the OsborneBrothers, the Wilburn Brothers,Dave Dudley, Lorene Mann,Loretta Lynn, Warner Mack,Bob Jennings and newcomerWarren Haas.
In addition to performers, there were many country diskjockeys used as extras. Collinsestimated that about 100 wereincorporated into various seg-ments.
Soundtrack LP?
(Right now Gemini is lookinginto the possibility of releasinga soundtrack from the pic. Des-pite the various contractualconflicts, Collins said that heexpected few obstacles and wasoptimistic about an eventualelpee.)
One of the lengthiest segmentsin the movie is Cutrer's drop inat the presentation of the annualRecord World country awardspresided over by Record Worldpublisher Bob Austin.
Gemini will handle distribu-tion of the film and expects to
slate playdates in the south(with an important Nashvilleopening) as of the release andthen slot Northern houses asspring comes in.
In the meantime, the produc-ing firm is going to go back intoproduction in February on an-other movie-this time with amore dramatic tale to tell. Col-lins wouldn't divulge any of theparticulars, but he said the ideawas a doozy and everybodywho'd heard about it flipped.
More Nashville Filming?
"I want to make one morelow budget movie in Nashville, before Hollywood moves in. AndI have the feeling they're goingto." (In the new movie, Collinsagain will use a large numberof performers doing their stuff-around 10 this time.)
One of the reasons Collins isanxious to go back to Nashvilleis to work with the people there."I can't praise them enough,"he said. "They're all pros. Theydo their job and go home. Thereare no temperaments to contendwith. Our shooting schedule oftwo weeks or so inflicted heavypressures, but during that timeI never heard a voice raised. It's all business there and I
loved it."

32 RECORD WORLD-January 22, 1966
BY ED HAMILTONTroops of C & W performers are making an all-out invasion on
the shores of Europe and Asia in '66. Leading the attack is theHubert Long Talent Agency, long known as "The Stable of theStars." RCA Victor's Jim Edward Brown leads the assault witha tour of Military Bases in England that began the 5th of thismonth and will last for 10 days. Jim just got back from Germanywhere he recorded 12 sides in the native tongue. United ArtistsDel Reeves is currently on his fifth overseas jaunt . . . this onea 12 -day junket of American bases in Germany.
Others set from "The Stable" for overseas consumption areCapitol's Charlie Louvin and Ferlin Husky, Decca's Bill Ander-son and Mercury's Roy Drusky. One of the big package thingsset up by Hubert to travel the Atlantic route includes RCA Vic-tor's Don Bowman, the Carter Family, Tompall and the Glasers,Marion Worth, LeRoy Van Dyke, Mel Tillis, Wilma Burgess and... get this . . . Mamie Van Doren and Jayne Mansfield.
Another Victor artist who just got back a few months agofrom a tour of the Land of the Rising Sun, Skeeter Davis, hasbeen asked to record a collection of her hits in Japanese. Skeeterwill do these sometime this month under the direction of RCA'sNo. 1 son in Nashville, Chet Atkins. Another Music City lass whojust got back from an 18 -day tour of Germany is Musicor's MelbaMontgomery.
So, in the capable hands of people like Hubert Long, LuckyMoeller, Wesley Rose, Bob Neal and many others, country musicis really going to become a world-wide thing in 1966!
Faron Young's Syndicated ShowThe latest addition to the evergrowing list of syndicated coun-
try and western shows was announced last week by Faron YoungEnterprises. "The Faron Young Show," featuring Faron Young,Dottie West and the Marijohn Singers as regulars, will be filmedat KLPR-TV in Oklahoma City and distributed nationally. Re-ports to date are that over 40 markets have already committedthemselves to the show.
The Mercury artist is currently riding the charts with "MyDreams" and Dottie is doing very well with "Before The Ringon Your Finger." This should be one of the finest boy -girl typecountry and western shows.
Bill and John Denny and all the folks down at CedarwoodPublishing are doing right well with current releases. Columbia'sCarl Smith just released "Why Do I Keep Doing This To Us"written by Kent Westbury and Benny Joy . . . RCA Victor'sBobby Bare has recorded the old Cedarwood standard, "The LongBlack Veil," and should have an immediate release on it . . . andRic's Bobby Sikes is doing well with Max Powell's "World WideDistributor." That's a pretty good way for any publishing com-pany to get a new year started.
The big country and western spectacular recently in the gigan-tic Houston Astrodome came up with some innovations thatalmost defied the imagination? First there was on displaya specially constructed "Bird of Paradise" for Columbia's JimmyDickens to ride around in while entertaining. The other innova-tions were three large, winged stages with the turf beneathpainted blue to provide a "sea" for the many boats that were ondisplay during the big show. After all, it was being staged inTexas for Texans ... so what else could one expect!
The Clyde Beavers Show, (Clyde Beavers, Sudie Callaway andthe Eager Beavers) will be heading for a little warmer climateearly in February: San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the DominicanRepublic. This year looks like a busy year for the Beavers withbookings already through June and especially busy for Clydewho just joined the Acuff -Rose booking clan, becoming HowdyForester's assistant (when not on the road). He will continue hiscareer as an artist, and also write songs for Acuff -Rose.
Our pick album this week has to be "Funny Way To Make anAlbum" by Don Bowman. Just to say it's great would be makingthe understatement of the year. This young fellow is loaded withtalent . . . makes most of the so called "stand-up" comedianssound like they are laying down . . . and sleeping! Take yourpick . .. there are 12 terrific cuts in the album.
Money Music(Continued from page 32)
can make it with a lyric, "if you use numbers." He remindedme about the Marvelettes' "Beachwood 4-5789" and GlennMiller's "Pennsylvania 6-5000." He says that people hear thingslike "I love you, baby" all day long on the radio. Numbershave more impact.
The original lyric had Len in an arrogant, unsympatheticlight. It is important to avoid putting the singer in the rolethat "he is the greatest, and the chick is going to whither awayif she doesn't make it with the great HIM!"
Johnny Madara and Dave White create the melodies byfiddling on the piano. Then they come up with a title, andthen they all lean in on a lyric. The prime criteria for the lyric:simplicity and "easy on the ear." Their dream is to build aTamla-Motown in Philadelphia. They feel that there is a lotof raw talent in Philadelphia, and that they can create a greatsong and record factory right here.
Len Barry to EnglandLen Barry is leaving for England. He has written a 37 -minute
act with Jimmy Wismer that is "Stone R&B." He wants a nitty-gritty image, James Brown, Smokey Robinson, hard -driving"Soul." He plans to knock the English audiences "flat on theirbacks." He will be using specially designed and weighted micro-phone similar to one used by Wilson Pickett and Jackie Wilson. In fact, Barry's dream is to headline the Apollo in Harlem. Hedid appear for Rocky "G" one Sunday at the Apollo. The impactwas so great that James Brown, headlining, came out and playeddrums for Len and turned the balance of the show over to him.
Len plans to keep his material simple, elementary and LOADEDWITH SOUL. He is MURDER on stage! And all us cats fromPhiladelphia got nothing but soul! Listen to WIBG! Thesehits from Boston, Seattle, Miami and Milwaukee never sellcopy "one" in the city of Brotherly Soul.
