REFILL PRESENTS

24 renowned Typographers, designers and artists come together as a tribute to the vinyl record.

Artists in the line up include, ALIFE, Michael Leon, Jonathan Zawada, Alex Trochut, Jeremyville, Andy Howell, COLLIDER.. to name a few. (flier attached) With the increasing consumption of digital music, disused vinyl records now gather dust the world over, many of which lie in scratched piles at book exchanges, permanently abandoned. Relics of bygone eras, old records were emblazoned with beautiful typography and logos unique to a moment in time and genre specific. The inspiration behind the exhibition concept was to focus on the record as a medium and create a renewed functionality. Turning the records into laser etched time pieces added purpose to objects

which had otherwise become obsolete.

The 24 artists consist of a diverse international and local mix. Each artist was chosen for their typographic ability, original ideas and most importantly unique flare.

Is a freelance graphic designer from Barcelona. He loves type and illustration. He doesn’t favour one over the other, but he particularly likes it when both are present. He’s a big believer in “More is More.” He doesn’t like limiting himself to a particular style. With friends like RZA, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Just Blaze and the like, it’s not hard to see why this brand maintains a sophisticated following among streetwear lovers. What started in 1999 as a New York City creative collective has evolved into a high-end, cool-kid line of sneakers, T-shirts and hats. The startling Fairfax space is modeled after one of one of New York City’s Dietch Projects by artist Rob Jest--all the popular wares are encased in Plexiglass along the sides with benches placed in the middle of the store--and checkout is setup like a bodega check-cashing joint. Some of the vibrantly colored goods are strictly Alife, while others are the result of partnerships with designers like Puma, Reebok, Kangol and Canada Goose.Alife also has a music series called “Alife Sessions” featuring artists like Just Blaze and John Mayer. www.alifenyc.com

PG 020-025 | ANDREW VAN DER WESTHUYZEN

Designer/Director and co-founder of Sydney based design and film collective Collider, Andrew van der Westhuyzen covers a range of creative fields from typography for print campaigns to animation direction, branding, art direction and web. Andrew’s client list includes MTV Australia, BMW USA, Target, Sydney Film Festival, Sydney Dance Company, Royal Australian Institute of Architects, Australian Tourism, Ministry of Sound and Toyota.Andrew is now in the process of publishing a graphic novel four years in the making. ‘Cabal’ is a culmination of years of drawings and paintings created to illustrate a story about contemporary society’s fixation with mass-consumption. The book, hand embossed and embellished, is created as a series of artist’s editions, and is in itself a culmination of van der Westhuyzen’s multi-faceted creative ability and passion. Andy Howell’s roots are simple: skateboarding, surfing, drawing, painting, punk rock, and hip hop. Howell travelled the world for

7 years as a pro skateboarder and during his career co-founded New Deal Skateboards and Element Skateboards. Howell draws on anything from electrical boxes on the street to skateboard decks to canvas and paper. Howell’s work relays an atmosphere of humor, while fusing his attraction to man’s vices with a cynical distaste for them. www.andyhowell.com

Arbito likes to surround himself in fur, mirrors, beer, boobs, hot pink colour, roman ruins, glossy shapes, long hair, mushrooms, American flags, hand gestures, mind games, thick lines, and psych vibrations. He shares a basement studio hideout with his wife Snaggs, in their humble home in the magical northwest USA. www.arbito.com

PG 038-043 | BIGFOOT Bigfoot the painter depicts his alter ego as an oversize woodland creature zapping bulldozers with lightning bolts, meditating in the forest, and sometimes terrorizing the viewer with menacing growls and grabbing paws. He’s the ultimate tree hugger, but he’s not a hippie. The work seems repetitive in a Rain Man-esque way, but if you look closely, you see there is a secret language being developed and a story building. The art of “getting up” is not lost on the endearingly shy, KISS-crazed artist, however; the demand for his gallery work has kept him out of the streets since July 2004. www.bigfootone.com

Ben Brown is a Sydney based designer and artist. Ben has been drawing and designing all manner of promotional and commercial material for a mixed variety of clients and exhibitions for over twenty years.His interest in music has led to work for local and international acts including Silverchair, Nirvana, Fat Boy Slim, Frenzal Rhomb and others. Ben has also been employed by major and independent record companies to package and promote music that went right across the board. Cody Hudson is a Chicago based painter, also known for his commercial art and graphic design contributions under the name Struggle Inc. Known for the production of clean, multi-dimensional graphics, Cody’s design aesthetic is part urban modernism, and part organic visual deconstruction. Dan Funderburgh is a wallpaper designer and artist in Brooklyn, NY. His patterns, prints and installations are varied in content but all demonstrate an unabashed love for decorative arts. With influences ranging from Moorish mosaic to American op art, the work is a repudiation of the fabricated schism between art and decoration. Deb, born in Melbourne, is an eclectic artist with a passion for Street Art and is very active in the Australian Street Art scene. Jeremyville is an artist, product designer, animator and author. He wrote and produced the first book in the world on designer toys called Vinyl Will Kill, published by IdN, interviewing people like Fafi, Sarah from Colette, Baseman, Biskup, Pete Fowler, Jason Siu, Kinsey and Kozik.He has been in a group show at Colette in 2007 alongside KAWS, Fafi, Futura, Mike Mills and Takashi Murakami. He has initiated the ‘sketchel’ custom art satchel project with artists like Beck, Genevieve Gauckler, Gary Baseman, and around 500 other artists. He has a new book out called ‘Jeremyville Sessions’, with collaborations with Geoff McFetridge, Miss Van, Devilrobots, STRANGEco, Lego, Converse, MTV and Adidas. His art has been published in design books by IdN, Die Gestalten Verlag, All Rights Reserved, Victionary, MTV, Magma Books, Kidrobot, Faesthetic, Laurence King, Taschen and Pictoplasma.

Jonathan Zawada is a Sydney based artist who works as a creative director and designer for music, art and fashion clients, such as Modular Records, The Presets, Tina Kalivas, Coca Cola US and China, Fanta, 18th Amendment, Myspace Fashion, BMW, V, Ksubi, General Pants, Universal Music, Westfield, and Silverchair. These commissions have included website design, illustration, fabric prints, art direction of photo shoots, and book and magazine art direction. Being involved in the Modular business for a number of years, in addition to working on album cover and touring artwork Jonathan has also developed a line of merchandise for the label which is sold in boutiques in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, USA, UK & France. Joseph Allen’s life and work is entirely preoccupied with art. Without differentiating between high and low, nor fine or commercial, Joseph works as a curator, gallerist, publisher, writer, art director and somewhere down the list - fine artist. Describing his profession as Mixed Business (like many convenience stores) he created Izrock to house all these endeavours under one roof. Luca Ionescu is internationally renowned for his branding and logo work. Combining his unique style with strong ideas to deliver a message, Luca has worked alongside major brands like Zoo York, MTV America, Nike, Etnies, Reebok, VH1 and Stussy to name a few.Luca founded Refill Magazine in 2003, a much respected niche publication for designers and artists of all disciplines. In 2006, he established Like Minded Studio, with the vision of creating cutting edge design solutions that propel brands forward. Marok was born 1972 in Berlin and is the founder and creative brain behind Lodown magazine, a niche culture magazine based in Berlin, which has been publishing urban avant-garde content in the fields of music, art and Bewegungskunst (expressionist dancing) for 12 years. Lowdown magazine is a trailblazer for contemporary popular culture and a platform for progressive ideas for a non-mainstream creative community. Marok is also a graphic artist however as a priority, he publishes his work in individual book projects. Michael Leon works in a variety of mediums including painting, sculture, photography and music. He is known for the simple, bold, colorful, and hopeful vision that flows throughout his work. After recieving a degree in studio art from Calarts he spent several years as a graphic designer, creating unique images for Girl, Rasa Libre, and other skateboard related companies. His artwork has been shown worldwide, including solo exhibitions in London, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. Phibs origionally from sydney, moved to melbourne because of its strong support of the arts. He has mannadged to work as a freelance srtist for several years. His work can be s een around streets of the inner city of melbourne and sydney. Origionanting from a traditionall graffiti backround, phibs endevours to promote the value of the art art form throughout outlets such as commisions, murals, youth workshops and exhibitions. Whilst phibs signature is his intricate almost stencil like thick and bold lines and cut back methods his work is visebly influenced by the art and myhtology of many culturs both antient and modern. www.phibs.com

Todd Bratrud grew up in a small farming community in rural northern minnesota, where football, hunting or throwing things off the bridge was considered the norm. However he was the exception - drawing and skateboarding was his idea of fun.Todd spent many years working on all things art related for Consolidated Skateboards. These days you can find his art regularly featured on flip skateboards, volcom, the skateboard mag, nike, familia skateboard shop. He also operates Teenage Urethane and often contributes to Burlesque design of north america. When he’s not working you can still find Todd skateboarding almost every day.
