Reading has been defined as “decoding graphicmaterial to the phonemic patterns of spoken language which we have already mastered whenreading is begun.” To put it another way, readingconsists of coming back to speech through thegraphic symbols. In short, meanings reside in thesounds of the spoken language. Speaking a language is the necessary first step to acquiring theability to read a language with meaning.

The reading lessons in Italian III are designed tofamiliarize the learner with material (signs, words,phrases) that the learner is likely to see or hear in anItalian-speaking country. Included is a section onthe pronunciation of the names of some famousItalians, lines from Italian opera arias, as well assections with some typical expressions and regionalidioms.

The reading materials for Italian III are allrecorded at the end of the program. You can dothese readings as it is most convenient for you.They can be done along with the units (roughly at aone to two ratio) or done entirely after completingthe full 30 units. Instructions on how to proceedwith the readings are contained in the audio portionof the course.
