Anotherwhirlwindofamonth!Letusembracethespringequinoxwithnewintentsandthefiretoignitethem.Takedelightinthescintillatingyellowhuesthattheforsythiaanddaffodilsaresoproudlydisplaying.Experiencethebubblingjoywithinattheverysightofabuddingtree,andallowourselvestotaketimetofully‘drinkin’theintoxicatinglyfragrantDaphneodorathataresoabundantinthePacificNorthwest.Whatagorgeoustimeofyear.April,herewecome!
TheApril7thmeetingwillbeledbyourveryspecialguest,
MatthiasMaute.Therewillnotbeanopeningprogram,butpleasedobeontimesothatwecanholdourSRSannualmeetingtoelectournewofficers.
Allsizesofrecordersfromsopraninoondowntocontraareneeded,themorelowbassesthebetter,andofcourseviolsarealwayswelcome.Matthiashasalreadysentthemusictobecopied,soifanyoneneedsmusicaheadoftimepleaseletmeknowwhatpartyouareinterestedin,andIwillsendapdfassoonasIcan.Hereiswhathehasplannedforus.

Vickibegantheplayingsessionbycreatingsevengroupsofplayerstorenderthesevenvoicesof“LaudatepueriDominum,”byRenaissancemasterOrlandedeLassus.Thegroupsincludedrecordersofmorethanonesize,sothepartsgenerallywereplayedinoctaves,givinganunusuallyfullsound.Thisbeautifulpieceisfullofcontrastscreatedbyfeaturingvariousgroupstogetherandseparately.
Vickinoted“thelowerthenote,thewarmertheair”requiredforplayingit.Cross-fingerednotes(withholesskipped)alsorequirethewarmththatisaresultofsofterblowing/slowerair;pushingmakesthembuzz.Anothertip:themelismas(stringsofnotestobesungonasinglesyllable)shouldbeplayedassmoothlyaspossible.
Nextweplayedtwofive-partmadrigalscomposedbytheDanishcomposerMogensPedersønafterhestudiedwithGiovanniGabrieli.Firstwas“Eccolaprimavera,”heraldingthespring.Givingusthelyrics,Vickinoted,"TheDsinDanishareverysoft,andtheGsalmostimperceptible.”Thesunisrevivingtherosesandviolets,saysthesong,andthesmallbirdsaresingingfromtheirwoundedhearts,weepingwithsheerlove.Thelittlebirdsfeaturedprominently,theirvoicescomingcloserandcloserrhythmi-callytocreatestretto.Weworkedtomatchourarticulationtothestresses,andlackofstresses,inthelyrics.
Thesecondmadrigalwas“Ochesoavebaccio.”“Suchakissmyladyhasgivenme!OrdidIstealit?AndifIdidstealit,mayshestealitback,andletstealingflourish!”Delightfully,thevoicesthickentoindicatemoreandmorestealing!
Finally,weplayed“DersturmendeAeolus,”theseventhmovementofTelemann'sWaterMusicSuite.IoncereadanaptdescriptionofTelemann;itsaidthathehadthegiftofwritingmusicwhichmusiciansenjoyplaying.Westormedalonginlong,longstringsofsixteenthnotes,themajorityofwhichwererepeatedpitches.Vickisuggested“tu-tu-turutu-tu-turu”or“di-di-diddledi-di-diddle,”whichmadethenotesflowbetterwhileatthesametimegroupingthesixteenths(whichhelpedusstaytogether.)
