Import Media

• Select your file(s) from the Open Dialog– Video (camrec, avi, mp4, mpg, wmv, mov, swf)– Audio (wav, mp3, wma)– Image (bmp, gif, jpg, png)
• Files are added to the Clip Bin
Add Files from Clip Bin to Timeline
• Click and drag any media file from the clip bin to the timeline– Files (except for audio) can only be inserted at the
beginning or end of a clip on the same track• Or on to a new video track
– Files can be added multiple times into the same timeline
Multiple Video Clips
• Camtasia Studio 8 adds the ability to play multiple video clips at time
• This is done by having overlapping video tracks• The track that is towards the top of the screen
on the timetime is layered on top on the Video Canvas
• Each clip can be resized to properly fit on the canvas
Removing/Reordering Clips
• To remove an item from the timeline:– Right click on the item– Select Delete
• To reorder a clip:– Click and drag the clip across the timeline– Note that you need to have room to drop the clip
into the timeline
Cutting a Selection
• To get rid of unwanted material, first select an area on the Time Reference bar by extending the green and red time markers– We’ll refer to this as a Range Selection• The Play button will play just the range selection• The range can be adjusted by clicking and dragging
either of the time markers
• Click the Cut Selection button
Splitting a Clip
What happens if we want to insert/move a clip into the middle of another clip?
• On the Time Reference bar, click to position the playhead to the desired split point– You’ll need to double click if you previously had a range selection– We’ll refer to this action as a Point Selection
• You also need to Select the Clip that you wish to be split• Click the Split button• At this split you can now insert/move clips
– You can also add other content such as transitions and title clips
Adding Elements to the Timeline
Markers
• Markers have two uses in Camtasia– Reference Points– Table of Contents
• To add a marker:– Click on the Time Reference bar (Point Selection)
• And Select the Clip that the marker should be applied to
– Hit the “M” key• Or select Markers from the Edit menu
– Enter the name of your marker
Transitions
• Transitions can be used to visually bridge two clips/elements
• Click Transitions on the Tab Bar (or from the More Menu, if necessary)
• Double click any transition to preview it• Drag your desired transition between the clips
to be bridged• You can adjust the length of the transition by
dragging the transition on the timeline
Zoom and Pan
• Make a Point Selection on the timeline and Select the Clip to apply the zoom/pan to
• Click Zoom-n-Pan on the Tab Bar• You can now select the scale (zoom level) and move
the clip on the canvas to the appropriate position• To add another Zoom and Pan Keyframe, click on the
timeline, and adjust the zoom level and/or position• The zoom settings will remain until you add a new
keyframe or until the end of the current clip
Cursor Effects
• Make a Point Selection on the Timeline• Click Cursor Effects on the Tab Bar (or from the More Menu,
if necessary)• The Add Animation button will allow you to have different
settings on each side of the animation (Keyframe)• You can alter:
– Cursor Size– Highlight Effect– Click Effects– Click Sounds
• Cursor effects remain active until the end of the clip
Callouts
• Callouts are images that appear on a video– Used to call attention or provide additional details– Most support text
• Make a Point Selection on the timeline• Click Callouts on the Tab Bar• Click Add Callout• Select the type of callout
– And the text/rotation/settings (if applicable)• Alternatively, Sketch Motion callouts provide a hand drawn
effect• Click Finished to return to the normal view
Self-Assessments• Make a Point Selection on the timeline• Click Quizzing on the Tab Bar (or from the More Menu, if
necessary)• Click Add Quiz and provide the quiz a name• Select the question type for the first question• Enter the question text and answer choices (if applicable)• You can now add another question to the quiz or return to editing
your project• Note: Files must be produced as mp4 to display the quiz• Recommendation: Your presentation should present that users
will be taking a quiz and should definitely provide the correct answer and an explanation
Audio Enhancements
Volume Adjustment
• Click Audio on the Tab Bar• Make a Range Selection on the timeline• Click one of the volume adjustment buttons to raise or lower
the volume by 25%• Alternatively, you can drag the bar in the center of the audio
track to adjust volume– Right clicking on the audio track allows you to add an Audio Point
• Note: The preview window will flash after each action. Do not click the next action until this occurs
• Note: Raising the volume of a clip by a large amount may cause some distortion and noise
Replace With Silence
• Replacing with silence is useful if you want to remove the audio from a section without altering the video
• Click Audio on the Tab Bar• Make a Range Selection on the timeline• Click the Silence button• Note: This may sound awkward in your project
if there is background noise in the rest of your audio
Remove Background Noise
• Click Audio on the Tab Bar• Select the clips that you want to have noise removed
from• Check the box for Enable Noise Removal– If Camtasia can’t find any noise or detects the wrong pattern,
you’ll have to do a range selection where there is only noise, and then click the Use Manual Noise Selection button
• Example: http://rmcp.dcollege.net/playlists/16472/205115.zip
Add Background Audio
• Import a file of background music• Drag the file from your Clip Bin to the Timeline• You can crop the audio by resizing the clip
Adjust Volume of a Single Audio Track
• Assuming we’ve added a second audio track, doing a range selection and modifying the volume will alter both tracks simultaneously
• To adjust just the background track, first lock the primary audio track by clicking the Lock button on the far left of the timeline
• Make a Range Selection on the timeline• Adjust the volume, as previously described
Fades
• Make a Range Selection on the timeline• Click Audio on the Tab Bar• Click one of the Fade buttons to add a fade in
or fade out– A fade in will start at no volume and gradually
increase to the volume at the end of the selection, over the length of the selection
Saving and Sharing Your Project
Saving a Project
• Saving the project will create a .camproj file (Camtasia Project)– Small file size– Contains links to media objects– Has instructions to rebuild project to the current state
• Because the .camproj just has links to files– If any source files are moved or deleted, Camtasia will
not know the new location of them– If you send the .camproj to someone else (or a different
computer), they won’t have access to your source files
Sharing a Project
• In the File menu, select Export Project as Zip• You can Include All Files from Clip Bin if you
want source files that weren’t on your timeline to be included as well
• The recipient of the zip file can go to the File menu and select Import Zipped Project– This will expand the zip, and recreate all of the
links
