Semester 1 shaped up as a time of development and progress. UWA Sports was proud to introduce its inaugural Outdoor Leadership Development and

Team Building Program which saw a number of selected students participate in a range of outdoor activities to test and advance their potential as emerging leaders. View pages 12-14 to read up on all the exciting adventures experienced and desired outcomes achieved.

Get ready for the Games as we are awaiting 5,000 university students from all over Australia to arrive in Perth in September. So get involved, show your pride for UWA and help us win the Games on our home grounds! Please view page 28 for more information.

As UWA Sports is expanding its facilities, services and programs over the next months, we give you plenty of opportunities to get active: UWA students, staff, graduates, and the general public, EVERYBODY is welcome to participate!

Another semester of furious Inter-College sporting rivalry came to an end with the traditional ‘showpiece’ fixtures of Nicholson Cup (men) football and WICSA Cup (women) netball contested over the first couple of weekends in May.

At the end of a semester where too much sport was never enough, the Trinity boys and St Thomas More girls were red hot favourites to take out the respective titles, having both been triumphant in four of the

UNIVERSITY SPORT

Inter-College Football & Netball Showdown

six sports contested to that date. However, victory for both was far from assured: the St George’s teams were the defending champions for both sports, while St Catherine’s has a perennially strong netball team and both Tommy and Currie Hall were spied training for football on Riley Oval in the weeks leading up to the competition. Needless to say, the culmination of a great semester of sport had everyone involved just a little on edge.

The netball competition wound up with some great games between Tommy, George’s and Cat’s. In the end though, the St Thomas More WICSA juggernaut of 2010 just kept powering along as the girls swept the competition to claim their fifth title from seven sports contested during the semester. Following the completion of netball, all eyes turned to Sports Park and

the final two games of football – the undisputable zenith of Nicholson Cup competition.

In the highly anticipated battle for top position between Trinity and St George’s, Trinity won the toss and chose to kick with a strong breeze that was blowing from straight over the goal umpire’s hat. From that moment on, however, the sporting gods shone on the George’s boys, and for the first ten minutes of the match it seemed they could do no wrong. The game never really recovered from this barnstorming start, and although it developed into a tight, end-to-end tussle, the Trinity fire was doused well before the final siren as St George’s went back-to-back with a comfortable victory.

Testimonial“April 2010 was the first time my five year old daughter tried Uni Sport For Kids, and it was a great success! She came home each day having learnt new sports, tired and went to bed at bed time! Thanks to Uni Sport For Kids, I now have a five year old soccer star! The program has given me a lot of direction as to what she likes, as she was able to try many different sports. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone whose child changes their mind about activities every few months.” Sally, Nedlands

12 FEATURE STORY

Leaders in the Making

Living in a residential college can be an enriching and

immersive experience as residents get to interact with fellows

from all walks of life and very often from different parts of

the globe. In an effort to enhance their students’ lifestyle

and UWA experience, residential college Currie Hall recently

partnered with UWA Sports and the Department of Sport

and Recreation (DSR), spearheading the first ever Outdoor

Leadership Development and Team Building Program targeted

at selected UWA students living in a residential college. The

goal of this program is to develop leaders in the various student

communities by exposing them to a range of outdoor challenges

and testing them in unfamiliar environments.

Page 13: Recreate Semester 2 2010

RECREATE® semester two 2010 13

FEATURE STORY

let’s get wetThe program kicked off with some paddle training. Selected participants completed a paddling course for beginners, which covered basic skills such as stroke techniques and kayak maneuvering. After successfully passing the course, the group took off to the Blackwood River for a weekend paddling expedition in wild waters. The rowers were constantly challenged by having to navigate through moving water and over long periods without rest. However, the rowing proved to be one of the highlights of the trip, and some even wished that there were more rapids to tackle! Participants also experienced the nights camping out in the wilderness which opened up the chance to acquire some ‘man/

woman vs wild’ skills. From water to land, the participants were treated to an enriching experience which tested their mettle and broadened their minds.

Surf’s upWith magnificent beaches at Perth’s doorstep and the ocean being an inseparable part of the Western Australian lifestyle, Scarborough Beach became the location of yet another aquatic activity: surf training! Under the supervision of qualified Surfing Australia coaches a selected group of future leaders took on the waves. Finding the right balance on the surfboards and thus building up confidence in open water proved to be the major training challenge. However, the day saw new talents emerge and mental and physical thresholds break down.

over the edgeOff to the DSR Bickley Recreation Camp to experience a real cliff hanger during a day of abseiling! Starting on a small boulder and progressing through a variety of abseils, adventurous challenges were put in front of the participants. While it was all in the name of fun, enormous emphasis was placed on abseiling safety, including cliff-top safety, care of equipment, safety checks and correct abseiling techniques. Climbing down the rock outcroppings could best be described as a “challenge by choice”: each individual expanding their own very personal boundaries and comfort zones with the aim of conquering fears and acquiring greater levels of bravery whilst maintaining safety standards.

Page 14: Recreate Semester 2 2010

14 FEATURE STORY

Getting off-trackTen selected Currie Hall residents took part in a final mountain biking adventure following some basic bike training which led them into the wilderness of Dwellingup, tackling the Munda Biddi biking trail. Besides spending the weekend exploring the various scenic outdoor trails, the students also picked up some fundamental survival skills by having to prepare their own meals and pitch their own tents in the great outdoors. The weather seemed determined to throw another challenge at them - one memorable moment which occurred during the trip was how the participants had to prepare and cook their food in the pouring rain! The thrill of performing elevated bike jumps, the adrenaline rush experienced on downhill sections, as well as off-track riding will definitely be remembered as trip highlights. Many of the participants commented that they were able to take away valuable lessons, and some described the expedition as allowing them to polish up their bike-riding, maneuvering and orienteering skills.

next stop: MurujugaThe program has been applauded as a huge success by both participants and organisers by surfacing leadership and team building skills in individuals which might not have been revealed otherwise.

So, mission accomplished? For sure. But it doesn’t end here. With all the positive feedback received and results delivered, the Outdoor Leadership Development and Team Building Program is already about to expand. Next stop: Murujuga, located at the Dampier Archipelago. It is the destination of a sea kayaking expedition headed up by UWA Sports and DSR instructors which will set off in July. Amongst other promising candidates, two Currie Hall residents have been selected to join the expedition crew to further develop their newly discovered potential.

you can do it tooThe future is looking more than bright with engaging initiatives continuing to identify and groom leadership potential across the student body. For those interested in taking part in the activities above, ongoing paddling, abseiling and bush walking courses and trips are embedded in our RECREATE® program. With the positive feedback received after the bike trip, UWA Sports is currently looking at offering a mountain bike course to anybody interested in participating. This course will be open to both individuals and group participants, so for expressions of interest, contact Ellen at [email protected].

Recent Achievements? Silver Individual Pursuit 2010 Australian Track ChampionshipsBronze Scratch Race 2010 Australian Track Championships

Gold Individual Pursuit 2009 Junior World Track ChampionshipsGold Team Pursuit 2009 Junior World Track Championships

Goals for the future? Racing the Team Pursuit in the Olympics.

What are you currently training for? Track Junior World which will be in Italy during the start of August.

Who is your sporting mentor, hero or role model? I don’t really have a role model as I think that each person has to make their own way. But I respect all those who have chased their dream and made it.

How did you get into your sport? I started doing triathlons when I was younger. I was a hopeless bike rider so I went down to the velodrome to get some better bike handling skills. And though I didn’t enjoy it at fi rst, after about a year I stopped doing triathlons and took up cycling.

Favourite food? Mexican.

Favourite movie? Don’t really have a favourite movie. But some movies that I recently enjoyed seeing was Where the Wild Things Are and 500 Days of Summer.

Favourite Tv show? Any early morning cartoons that I can watch before I go out training.

What music do you listen to? Favourite band would be The Strokes. Though I enjoy listening to Iron & Wine, Angus & Julia Stone, Los Campesinos! and Two Door Cinema Club. But anything goes really.

Career ambitions? Cycling wise I’d defi nitely like to go to the Olympics. Though London might be a bit soon defi nitely Rio. And hopefully when my sporting career ends I’d have fi nished university and would like a job as an actuary.

Favourite sporting activity apart from your sport?Don’t do much other than cycling. But the occasional walk with mum is nice, though that’s probably not considered a sport.

if you could travel to anywhere in the world where would you go? Greece. It looks nice in the pictures.

if you could invite three people to dinner, who would they be?Jesus – He’s a given.

Miranda – I’ve recently read the book ‘Picnic At Hanging Rock’ and Miranda (no last name was given) was one of the girls that disappeared that afternoon. I would defi nitely like to hear what she has to say.

And lastly, probably the model in the latest Burberry ads.

The pole vaulters were all class with Liz Parnov taking out her first national championships in a personal best height of 4.40. Alana Boyd also cleared 4.40 to place second and Amanda Bisk secured the third position making it a clean sweep for the club. These three girls along with high jumper Ellen Pettitt have been named in the first round selection for the Commonwealth Games team to compete in Delhi in October.

The last 12 months have been an exciting time for the club with an increase in memberships, the newly named UWA Little Athletics (formerly Perry Lakes Little Athletics) working closely with the senior UWA club, the announcement of ten scholarships offered to UWAAC athletes, a record number of teams entered into our major fund raiser event for the year, the Foreman/Wheeler Corporate Mile, and an increasing number of athletes competing successfully at a national level.

Members of the club are expected to do well at the upcoming Australian University Games and aim to knock off the University of Queensland as the Champion Athletics team.

Calling all Baseballers and SoftballersThe UWA Baseball & Softball Club is now looking to recruit students for the 2010/11 summer season.

Men’s and women’s baseball teams compete in the Baseball WA suburban competition on Sundays, while the women’s softball teams compete in the Softball WA senior competition at Coolbinia Reserve in Yokine on Saturday afternoons. There is also opportunity for baseball teams to play at Baseball Park and softball teams to play under lights at Mirrabooka Stadium.

Summer competition runs from October to February, with finals held throughout March. Pre-season training will begin in early August.

This year, the club will also be putting men’s baseball and women’s softball teams together for the Australian University Games to be held in Perth in September. If you would like to be part of the teams, please contact Brendan Buckley (0409080140 or [email protected]) for baseball or Brittany Edgar (0433141553 or [email protected]) for softball.

Strong Season Start for UWA Boat ClubThe UWA Boat Club (UWABC) has started the season in fantastic form and is well placed in the race to become the Champion Rowing Club in 2010. The season opened with three long distance head races, including the Perth to Fremantle race, with UWA fielding at least one winning boat at each outing. The Open Women’s Eight have two wins from two starts and Grant Adendorff has twice taken out the Men’s A Single.

Bunbury played host to the first pennant regatta of the season on 29 May which saw nearly 60 UWABC members compete and join in the post-racing celebrations.

The month of June saw competitors from all over Australia arrive in Perth for the Australian Masters Regatta where the UWA men tested the best in the country.

The club looks forward to the AUG Rowing being held in Perth in September and hopes to win the Lady Margaret (Women’s Four) as well as the Oxford and Cambridge Cup (Men’s Eight).

diving With Sharks – Ready To Wet yourself?Members of the UWA Underwater Club are definitely not short of adventures: Just off Rottnest there is a small cave that is home to a family of Grey Nurse sharks that the dive club visits regularly. Imagine sitting quietly, 22m under water, while one of these fierce looking predators glides slowly past almost close enough to touch. Up to 15 of these creatures can be seen moving around the cave, their white toothy smiles the first thing that appears out of the gloomy interior like a Cheshire cat’s grin. Some people pay over $150 to dive with one or two sharks at an aquarium. This is totally different in that the sharks are completely wild and approach you nervously out of curiosity, not from expecting to be hand fed. Showing photos or videos of an encounter to your friends always amazes and slightly terrifies non-divers and makes other divers jealous. Think you’re up to diving here too and claiming the bragging rights amongst your friends and family?

Water Polo Season HighlightsBoth the men’s and women’s teams had a tough season but both teams are set for bright futures though with talented young players.

Eighteen year old Eliesha Browne began the season already recognised locally as a talented junior, but by season’s end she had excelled, having made the National Senior Squad and the National League All Star Team – one of only seven players from the 12 competing clubs and a pool of 250 players. To complete a wonderful season she has just been selected in the National Junior Squad to compete in New Zealand and the USA, as has Claire Pierce who is in the USA this year.

In her twenty one games for the season Browne scored thirty eight goals, with three successful penalty shots and the other thirty five from action goals in field play. Always energetic and ever smiling Browne was a crowd favourite at the UWA pool and is already looking forward to the 2011 season. Closest to Browne in scoring for the women were Cathryn Earl with 17 and sister Maggie with 16. The women’s team appreciated significant support from the Alcock Browne Neaves Group and its affiliates. The UWA is the main supporter of both teams.

Highest scorer for the men’s team was veteran and life member Brad Mercer with thirty four goals. He was followed by Sasha Kovalenko on twenty nine and Jo Balczer with twenty five. Brett McGhie played his 150th game for the Torpedoes and became only the fourth player in the Torpedoes’ 21 year history to make the mark and so earn Life Membership. Mercer will play his 200th game early next season, the first to do so for the club.

Training sessions are on Wednesdays at 6:30pm and Saturdays at 3:30pm at the International Martial Arts Centre (Claremont Campus), so if you are looking for fitness, flexibility, self defence and dynamic competition come and join the group of friendly staff, students and community members and try out a session.

Outside of the regular weekend Rottnest day trips and social shore dives the club has had a couple of successful dive trips this year, including long weekends to Busselton and Albany. Don’t fret though, there are more trips planned for the remainder of the year. So think about supporting the club and its activities and enjoy the amazing range of diving opportunities WA has to offer.

UWA Savate Club after French seminar

UWA Savate Club Establishes international TiesThe UWA Savate Club was visited recently by a high profile government delegation from France, whose aims were to promote the development of savate here in Australia and more specifically to build links between UWA and universities in France and around the world who practice savate. The sport is practiced in over 85 countries, with 40,000 licensed practitioners in France alone. While savate enjoys great popularity in Europe and across the northern Hemisphere, here in Australia it has a relatively low profile. UWA is the only university teaching savate anywhere in the country, with the club in operation since 1986.

As a result of the visit the UWA Savate Club was invited to participate in the inaugural World University Savate Championships in Nantes, France, this June.

Club President and head instructor Colin Pestell and talented young student Kieran Golby are training non stop to prepare for this historic event, where over 35 countries will be represented. While Golby has only trained seriously with the club for several years, the French delegation were greatly impressed with his skills. Not only did they invite him to attend the World University Championships, but also asked him to be the first Australian ever to compete in the Mediterranean Savate Tournament, held in Southern France in July.

The upcoming visit to France will help raise the profile and status of UWA, providing ongoing opportunities for international exchange and increase possibilities for the UWA student body.

Join the UWA Taekwon-do ClubTaekwon-Do is an exciting martial art and sport for men and women. UWA Taekwon-Do members will be participating in a State Championship and grading in June, the National Championships in August, another State Competition in September and hopefully the World Championships in March 2011 in New Zealand!

FEATURE CLUB

UWA Handball Club has come a long way since its establishment just more than a year ago. Since its inception in 2009, the Club has competed in state and nation-wide tournaments such as the Handball West state leagues and inter-university competitions.

The Handball team deserves special mention for their successes at the 2009 Australian University Games. Despite being newly established, UWA’s team took the Division 2 competition by storm, defeating teams from the Australian College of

Physical Education, the University of Wollongong, UTS Sydney, and Murdoch University. The UWA team blazed its way to the finals, where it put up a brilliant fight but lost to the University of New South Wales by seven points.

Many of the team members have already received recognition at state level. Players Andrew Mills, Sebastian Nalletamby, Milena Konig, Beat Roethlisberger and Brownyn Smith have represented WA at the state level for the Indoor Handball competition.

Like volleyball, beach handball is a version of the sport that is also played competitively, and the club’s members have received numerous accolades in this area. This year, the club’s former and current president, Andrew Mills and Michael Bone, came together and represented WA at the 2010 Beach Handball National competition, clinching

the gold medal. Former captain Andrew Mills, who has had the distinction of receiving a Half Blue and having graduated from UWA, is set to represent Australia in the Beach Handball World Championships in Turkey this June.

This year’s Australian University Games will be held in Perth, and being on home grounds, the Handball team is expecting to do even better.

Handball is one of the largest growing sports clubs in WA and everyone is encouraged to become part of it. Be it a social or a competitive member - all are welcome! However, to participate in the TSWA and Australian University Games, a participant needs to be a student of UWA.

For more information on how to get involved, please contact Michael Bone: [email protected]
