To Township of Southgate Council
We are writing to you to let you know of the very difficult situation that Dundalk Minor Hockey is
currently facing and with hopes that you can discuss some possible financial outcomes.
First, we would like to share a bit of history with you. As you know, hockey is the main sport played by
the youth of Southgate and is the one of the most played sports by adults who reside in The Township of
Southgate. Dundalk Minor Hockey has had a great history of providing hockey to our youth and has
remained autonomous in its dealings, not needing too much assistance from the township. We have
always managed to keep a bank account with money for a rainy day and to cover unexpected costs. This
year, we have a brand new executive, inheriting the successes and failures of the past five years of
executives. Unfortunately, the past executive has failed us and we find ourselves on hard times. We
believed that we were going to take office with a bank account of somewhere between 30,000-40,000
dollars. However, what we found is that the irresponsible actions of the past executive has left us with
no money. Further to that, the past executive did not communicate particularly well with the
community, causing a significant drop in our membership numbers. While these are our concerns and
not yours, we do believe that our partnership with the Township of Southgate can help us get back to
the stronger days of Dundalk Minor Hockey.
Sharing this history is simply to give you a context for the conversations we have to have at our
executive level. One key point of conversation for us has to do with ice costs. We embarked upon a
research project to determine the cost of ice in our zone to determine why our registration costs are not
meeting the needs of our budget while other hockey centres are. What we found was that when
comparing ourselves to similar size centres, we are paying more for our ice than others, causing us to
have difficulty in keeping our registration costs down. This is a vicious circle, as registration costs are the
number one factor to keeping our youth in hockey. To help our situation, we are forced to begin taking
ice after Thanksgiving, which, to our public looks like they are getting less hockey for more money. Most
significant is our comparison to our nearest centre, Flesherton Minor Hockey. Flesherton arena is one of
four rinks run by The Municipality of Grey Highlands while The Township Of Southgate is only
responsible for one arena. Grey Highlands has successfully placed emphasis on youth sports and their
own taxpayers by ensuring a two tier cost for their arenas. While the public can book the arenas for
more than $150 per hour, Flesherton Minor Hockey books their ice for $105 per hour after taxes. A
similar situation exists for Osprey Minor Hockey at the Feversham arena. This is a recognition of the fact
that the most significant users of the arenas are minor hockey. We would also like to be treated as such.

There does need to be some hard questions asked of the recreation staff in Southgate if Grey Highlands
can successfully keep the costs of running four arenas low enough to offer a reasonable rate for ice
while Southgate is unable to do so with just one arena.
Finally, we would like to share with you some of the solutions that we are looking at to solve our
financial and registration concerns. Beginning last winter, we engaged in conversations with our
neighbouring hockey organizations including Flesherton, Shelburne, Osprey and Markdale to determine
if some partnerships could be forged. We are still in conversation with Flesherton and are discussing
some options of sharing teams. This is not a new concept for the two organizations but what is new is
the sentiment that both organizations are likely better together. In the short term, we do not believe
that we will be looking for less ice and any conversations we have does include stipulations of keeping
the ice time equal between Dundalk and Flesherton. However, costs are real for us and a difference of
20 dollars per hour does cause us to ask questions. Since the arena manager is forcing us to take a
certain number of hours of ice in September, we are unable to rent ice from Dundalk in September. This
is causing us to take ice in Flesherton, in effect taking Southgate money and bringing it to Grey
Highlands rather than keeping it within Southgate.
We are asking The Township Of Southgate to discuss two main topics: first September Ice and second,
the per hour cost of ice for Dundalk Minor Hockey. With regards to September ice, we would like to ask
that you put the ice in one week after fall fair, as it has in the past. Rather than forcing us to take 24
hours per week, we ask that you allow us to take 12 hours per week in those first two weeks. After that,
we would revert to our regular fall and winter schedule. This would allow us to keep our hockey in town
and not cause us to rent ice elsewhere to take care of development and tryouts. Second, we would
suggest that we split the difference between what Flesherton Minor Hockey pays and what Dundalk
Minor Hockey pays hourly for ice. This would place us at $115 dollars per hour taxes included, which
gives us a chance to increase our ice costs and/or decrease our overall costs, giving us a fighting chance
to get back on our feet. We would be happy to discuss what the next five or ten year plan would be for
ice cost increases to help us budget and plan accordingly.
We believe that are a very important service to the Township of Southgate and we believe that what we
are asking for will help sustain our organization and help with the longevity of the organization. We

creation is resolved quickly and for the issue of ice costs, we hope to be invited to your next meeting for

We would like to suggest / request for 2-3 tables with umbrellas be placed on the south side pool deck, this glves gueststhe option to sit out for a break as a family or group and also boosts the appeerance for those passing through townrnaking the pool space more engaging and inviting.
Also wondering if music could be an optiorl, nothing loud but something in the background"
