CLASSIC TIMES From the Director: Lynda Christison……….

Winter made a few valiant efforts to visit South Carolina this year, but never quite made it in the front door! After a roller coaster of hot and cold days, it is wonderful to work out in the garden, go for a long walk or just sit on the porch swing and enjoy the warmth, birds, and flowers. Please remember to use sunscreen, wear hats with brims that shade your face, ears, and neck and to drink extra water to prevent dehydration.

“Unleash the Power of Age!” is this year’s theme of Older Ameri-cans Month. Every year since 1963, May has been the month to appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of older adults and their contributions and achievements. The Administration on Aging (AoA) is in-viting everyone 60 and over to post what they will do this May on their Facebook page. Check out all the different activities and ways that you can get involved and unleash your “power of aging” inside this edition of Classic Times and on our website, www.lcrac.com.

When long-time Pelion Senior Center members J. E. Shumpert and Doris Gable cut the red ribbon on March 4th , it marked the official re-opening of the newly expanded and renovated Pelion

Senior Center! Lt. Governor Glenn McConnell spoke eloquently about the challenges seniors face, the importance of senior centers and his commitment to improving services both for sen-iors today and in the future as more and more baby boomers retire. Mayor Charlie Haggard signed Pelion’s March for Meals proclamation at the event. Neither the expansion nor the reno-

vations would have been possible without a Permanent Im-provement Project grant from the Lt. Governor’s Office on Ag-ing. Their support is much appreciated! Be sure to stop in and check out all the changes!!

Did you happen to see your mayor delivering meals on March 20th? Lexington County mayors made us all proud on national Mayors for Meals Day. Their names are listed on the Meals on Wheels Association of America’s website, www.mowaa.org. All of our mayors signed March for Meals proclamations recognizing the importance of senior nutrition programs and how critical it is to end senior hunger. The next time you see your mayor, please thank him or her for supporting seniors and

meals on wheels.

April is National Volunteer Month – a huge thank you to all of you who give so generously of your time and energy in so many ways!! Your help delivering meals, working at one of our Senior Centers, at our Aging Admin office, helping with special events – all of it is so very much appreciated!! Each Center is hosting its own volunteer recognition activities this year.

Congratulations to all the athletes and supporters who participated in the 2013 Lexington County Senior Sports Games! The 2013 Senior Games were a huge success! Thank you so much to everyone who sponsored the Games, volunteered at the Games, and worked diligently to organize the events. Enjoy the photos at www.flickr.com/photos/lcracclassics. The South Carolina State Senior Games start on May 15th. Good luck to all Lexington County participants!

A special thank you to all the wonderful people who have vol-unteered to plan, organize, and work on Christmas in Lexington County 2013. If you are handy with a hammer, paint brush, or rake and would like to help fix-up seniors’ homes on Saturday, April 20th, give us a call at 356-5111. It is an incredibly reward-ing day for everyone involved. This project would not happen without volunteers and sponsors. You’ll go home knowing that you made a tremendous difference in someone’s life.

Are you an animal lover? Bring your pet and have a purrrfectly great time supporting seniors and their pets on May 18th at the Red Bank Horse Arena at the Pet Pawty! Pet walk, best dressed pet, and lots of other contests and activities. Be sure to get your ticket for Cow-A-Dunga Bingo!! More details inside or call Donna Neel at 356-5111.

We will be issuing the 2013 Seniors Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program vouchers beginning June 3rd. Details are in this issue of Classic Times. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

This Quarter, we shine our spotlight on Mr. Harvey Amick. Harvey has been a Home Delivered Meals volunteer for over 14 years. Harvey is a very caring per-son, who not only takes meals to our homebound sen-iors;,he will also repair homes that need to be repaired. He has fixed doors that would not shut, replaced doors, and recently helped replace a floor that was unsafe to be walked on. This is going way above expectations to help our folks. He has on several occasions volunteered to drive the bus, to pick up seniors and bring them into the center. We just have to call and he will also deliver the frozen routes when we need him.

Mr. Harvey is one of our Home Delivered Meal volunteers who go above and beyond. Harvey we appreciate all that

you do for the Pine Ridge Senior Center.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION WEEK,

We are always in need of volunteers if you as an individual or your business would like to volunteer, we would love to have you. Swansea Senior Center and Pelion Senior Cen-ter have been refurbished and we are expecting growth in these communities, so new volunteers will be needed.
