Welcome to the City of Parkland’s Activities Guide filled with programs offered by the Parks & Recreation Department, the Parkland Library and the Parkland YMCA. On the following pages, you will find creative classes, sports activities, special events and much more with

something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

Public parks & recreation activities play a vital role in the promotion of healthy “minds and bodies” in every community, with that in mind,

we encourage you to get out and enjoy the summer season. Whatever your interest, take time to explore your city parks and check

out the variety of recreational opportunities offered to you!

“Silver Surfers” This program will match up local high school students to interested sen‐iors that live in Aston Gardens. Students will provide training for seniors eager to learn more about computer technology. This program runs

through the school year and begins on October 18, 2014.

The Intergenerational Programs at the City of Parkland provide exciting opportunities for senior adults to interact with younger generations, sharing their skills and knowledge while at the same time enjoying the energy, creativity and vitality of the young minds. Our intergenerational programs are designed to bring youth and senior adults into meaningful

discussions. The programs vary from educational to recreational to community service and are often a blend of all three.

Intergenerational BINGO! This program brings selected 4th and 5th grade students from the community to in with the seniors who help by collecting the money,

calling out the numbers and playing alongside at the tables. BINGO occurs on school board employee planning days. The next BINGO will be held on

December 19, 2104.

Classes and Trips Every other month trips/programs are FREE of charge for Parkland

residents aged 62 and over. Trips go anywhere and everywhere in the tri‐county area and participants get to experience great fun together at sporting events, cultural places, theatrical programs and educational activities. Trips generally include admission to the places visited, snack

and water and all trips include transportation in an air‐conditioned motor coach bus. Advance registration is required.

Registration To register for a senor program, proof of residency and age (i.e.: driver license or other valid photo ID) in addition to a completed application

must be on file with the Parks and Recreation Department.

City of Parkland’s Teen Advisory Group (TAG) Become a leader in your community. Create the programs and experiences you would like to see offered in Parkland for teens. Plan social events such as movie nights, Teen Café, field trips, Battle of the Bands, overnight campouts, tournaments, toy drives, etc… Make presentations to Parkland Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, volunteer for Parks and Recreation special events, camp programs and library programs while receiving community service hours.

Meetings are the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7PM in the Parkland Library.

Non Resident Sports Car Individuals residing outside of the City of Parkland must purchase a

non‐resident sports card in order to participate in all City of Parkland sport organizations. The cost for the card is $172.00 and covers all members of a

family at the time of program registration for one (1) fiscal year (October 1– September 30).

Field Condition Hotline The City maintains a field condition hotline that sport team members can consult to confirm field schedules and weather cancellations. You can reach the hotline at (954) 757‐4110. It is updated daily after 4PM.

the National Parks and Recreation Association.

Field Availability All athletic fields are reserved for use by City of Parkland recognized sports leagues. No organized programs or teams are permitted to utilize city facilities for training,

lessons, practice or games other than the City recognized sports leagues.

The City of Parkland’s Code of Ordinances provides the framework and guidance for the issuance of Special Events Permits within the City of

Parkland. Any organized activity impacting city services or involving the use of, or having an impact on, public property, public facilities, sidewalks, medians or street areas requires a permit. Please remember that Special

Events cannot be advertised until after the permit process has been completed and you receive an approved permit.

Submitting the Special Events Permit Application does not guarantee site

availability. Permits may not be submitted more than 6 months in advance, or less than 30 days from the event. It is the applicant’s

responsibility to contact federal, state or county agencies for other relevant permits.

The non‐refundable fee for the Special Event Permit is $140; non‐profit

organizations are exempt from this fee. Other City fees may apply depending on the type of event. A deposit may be required if the costs of supplying City services exceeds $1,000. Please note that There may be additional fees required for the use of City facilities. All applications and

payments must be received in person at Parkland City Hall.

Pavilion Permits are required for any weekend and holiday rentals. To obtain pavilion permit residents call Parks and Recreation(954) 757‐4105 to check availability and must come to Pine Trails Recreation Office. Pavilions are

reserved in 4‐hour segments on weekends from 9am‐1pm and 2pm to 6pm or from 9am‐6pm by paying for both time slots. Payments can be made by Visa,

MasterCard, cash or a check payable to City of Parkland. Pavilion reservations are available for Parkland Residents only.

Reservations cannot more than six (6) months in advance or less than four (4) days prior to event. Any outside vendors need to supply Parks and Recreation with a Certificate of Liability insurance with City of Parkland added as an additional insured party within four(4) days before event. You must notify the City of your intent to have a vendor at the time of reservation. The event should end on time and clean up is expected to be completed within 15 minutes of the event ending time. The City asks that you bring extra garbage bags, which can be left by the receptacles for Public

Services to come and dispose of them.

Parkland parks are equipped with Thor Guard Warning System. If a rain storm approaches and it is activated, residents are to wait in their vehicles until the weather clears and the “All Clear Signal” sounds. Each rental permit has a park lightning policy attached to it to advise you further on what to do. Rain checks will be given if event is rained out within the first two (2) hours of reserved time and is approved by the Park Ranger’s office. Rain checks must be used with one (1) year of

the original date of the reservation. There are no refunds under any circumstances.

Grills are available in the larger rented pavilions however you must bring your own charcoal and cannot bring additional grills. No alcohol is allowed in any of the City of Parkland’s parks.

Barkland is just over two (2) acres in size and has separate areas for large and small dogs, a dog washing station, water fountains for pets and their owners, covered pavilions, walking trails, benches and picnic tables. Barkland sponsorship opportunities are still

available for individuals and businesses.

The Dog Park, known as “Barkland” is an unsupervised facility and users enter at their own risk. By entering this facility owners expressly understand

and accept that the City of Parkland is not responsible for any and all damages which may be caused by their or other dogs. Owners and those with custody of a dog are legally responsible for their dogs and any injury

they may cause and for complying with the following regulations while in the park. Rules and regulations are posted at

www.cityofpakrland.org/604/barkland‐dog‐park.

The City of Parkland is proud to announce the creation of the Adopt‐A‐Park program. The program will allow for maintenance and

beautification of City parks through litter and debris removal by various non‐profit organizations.

Interested non‐profit organizations from the community will adopt a spe‐cific City park to perform debris and litter removal at their chosen loca‐

tion, and will have a sign recognizing the group placed within their chosen park.

The Adopt‐A‐Park program will increase resident awareness and pride in the City’s parks, while providing an opportunity for groups to work to‐

ward the common goal of ensuring the City’s parks maintain their beauti‐ful appearance.
