MESSAGE FROM THE SCCA BOARD

Here comes summer! With the new season comes transformation. We welcome Luke Balson, our new Community Recreation Supervisor to the Centre. We are excited to have him join the team at Strath, and embrace his new perspectives, approach, and experience. We also welcome a new Community Recreation Programmer and Food Security Coordinator. With all of the new staff, comes opportunities to look at what we do and how we do it – renewal at its best.

We also welcome three new Directors to the Board. Kevin, Maria, and Deb bring valuable skills to the SCCA and we look forward to engaging them in some strategic initiatives in the coming year. Board work is a volunteer work and we really appreciate the time and energy it takes to give back to the community in this way. Thank you for all for stepping forward.

Please continue to let us know your feedback on our programs and services, so that we can continue to craft programs and services that meet your needs.

Respectfully,

SCCA Board of Directors

Part of my vision for #TreasuringStrathcona has been to have a diverse team of artists, people who are all fierce in overlapping ways — fiercely intellectual, fiercely protective, fiercely inuitive, fiercely activist. With Anna Heywood-Jones and Jennifer Brant, their fierceness is under cover of ‘mild-mannered’. They’re thoughtful and attentive and don’t really draw too much attention to themselves; but with the chance to talk with them and see their work, the breadth and depth of their practical knowledge and intellectual power reveal themselves.

These three walks will explore the land of Strathcona and colours from the plants, beginning on May 10 with Himalayan Blackberry. Participants will join Anna and Jennifer in dyeing fibres that may be used in a collaborative tapestry or collage project, to be made in the fall (sessions not yet scheduled)

Please sign up for the first walk on Eventbrite (June 22 and July 20 Walks links will be posted later) https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/strathcona-dye-plants-walk-no1-tickets-60736837516?utm_term=eventurl_text

Strathcona neighbourhood is a place of extremes, of fierceness — fierce struggle, despair, suffering; and fierce compassion, fealty, beauty and commitment. I’m looking forward to seeing how these artists resonate with this neighbourood, to the conversations, insights and work may arise during the walks this spring and summer.
