Recreation Programs For All Seasons!

Residents of all ages, from pre-school children through seniors, will be able to participate in a broad variety of classes and activities in every season. We also encourage you to register for the programs of your choice by attending one of our open registration nights held at the Town Hall. The open registration nights during later hours has made the process easier for many of our residents and parents with children who work during the day.

Despite reductions in state funding and corresponding municipal budget cuts, the Township and the Recreation Department are working hard to continue to offer the programs that are the most popular with our residents. Inside this booklet and on our website, you will find a listing of the programs offered this 2012 - 2013 Fall and Winter season.

Fall/Winter program registration dates October 15 and October 16 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm

At Weehawken Town Hall ~ 400 Park Avenue

Registration Registration will be held on Monday, October 15 and Tuesday, October 16 from

5:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Weehawken Town Hall, 400 Park Avenue. Registration for workshops and programs will be open to all residents and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Many are in high demand so plan accordingly. You may register for programs after these dates but please remember program space is limited and some programs may not be available at a later date. Programs with fees MUST be paid at time of registration, cash or checks only. Checks should be made payable to: Township of Weehawken. Parents need to register their own children. You must bring proof of residency with you to register. For further information, please call the Recreation Department at 201.319.6061. NO registrations by e-mail before October 17th.

Ages 6 – 12 Make creative, seasonal projects each week. Bring your imagination and have fun using different mediums, textiles, beads, feathers, paints, paper crafts and more.

Supervised and parent assisted, toddlers learn basic tumbling skills and beginning gymnastic exercises in a fun and safe environment. Structured to improve coordination, ability to focus, and early gross motor skills.

Floor mat gymnastic exercises taught in a fun, safe, supportive, and non-competitive environment. Designed to help develop flexibility, coordination and strength.

Instruction in learning somersaults, combination to headstands, front and back walkovers, cartwheels, and dive rolls.

Taught by a professional instructor. The class will follow the logical progression from child to adult using all aspects of Martial Arts to include kicks, blocks, holds, punches, and forms. Children will learn the focus skills necessary to develop in karate in a safe and disciplined environment.

Classes cover an introduction to the use of the traditional recurve bow, with emphasis on range safety and on learning how to hold, draw, aim, and shoot a successful archery shot. All equipment and supplies

Young chefs learn how to work safely around the kitchen while preparing and testing a variety of simple but tasty recipes. Children will be instructed on basic measuring, food preparation and

useful techniques in a fun, safe atmosphere. This class is not recommended for children who have or may have a food allergy.

Stevens Institute of Technology Family and Lap Swimming and Use of Fitness Center

The Mayor and Township Council would like to remind Weehawken residents of the opportunity to use the Stevens Institute of Technology’s pool and fitness center at no charge. This popular program is the result of our partnership agreement with Stevens Institute of Technology. It allows for use of the Stevens’ lap pool and weight and fitness center at no cost to Weehawken residents.

Residents must fill out an application in person at the Weehawken Recreation Office located at 372 Park Avenue. Proof of residency and a photo ID is required. Please call the Recreation Office at 201-319-6061 for more info. Membership good for one year from date of application.

Firs t Aid Squad as an Emergency Medica l Technic ian could save you up to $1,000 every year on your proper ty taxes or r ent .

The First Aid Squad will offer training in the following courses:

American Heart Association Friends & Family CPR for members of the community. (2 hour program) This program teaches how to perform CPR in adults, children, or infants and how to help an adult, child, or infant who is choking. It is perfect for family members, friends, and members of the general community who want to learn CPR but do not need a course completion card. Basic First Aid. Class is designed for individuals that require or desire a basic knowledge of first aid skills. This program will provide students with basic skills to help someone who is injured or sick until emergency services arrive. Emergency Medical Technician. The EMT program is a 144+ hour pre-hospital care program that will train the student to provide life saving skills. Upon successful completion of the EMT Program, you will be state certified to provide care on the ambulance.
