SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER “and Stephen said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened
and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” (Acts 7:56)
St. Stephen’s martyrdom by Paolo Uccello, Italy, 1453

SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
The Anchor
Easter season is winding down. Last Thursday we celebrated—40 days after
Easter Sunday—the Ascension of our Lord. Next Sunday we will celebrate Pentecost, the feast day of the Holy Spirit. Jesus insists that he must return to the Father for good, because his time has a man, his mission as a man has run its full course. For Jesus, as for all of us, earthly life has a limited scope and purpose. All through Easter time we have been reading from chapters 14 to 17 of the Gospel according to John. It is possibly the most important meditation about Jesus and us that we can read and return to read as much as possible. Exactly because we are human, and our most im-portant activities have to be learned and practiced in time, with patience and dedication, the only way to really become friends is dedicating time and energy to a promising relationship. It is a very familiar and inevitable process. Friendship, love, family, any important relationships need time and reasons. We need time because human knowledge is never instantaneous. We need reasons because otherwise why should we invest time and energy in it? Jesus came to give us his time (his whole life, indeed) for sure, and most definitely his “energy”, which we call Holy Spirit. Too often we find ourselves short of time and energy to devote to our relationships, the most important ones included: we see how easy seems to be to fall out of love with each other, ourselves, God even. The Holy Spirit is Jesus most important gift: the Spirit gives us the chance to relate to others, ourselves, and God with an inexhaustible reserve of energy. In Jesus’ Spirit we become capable of things unheard and unexpected. Stephen became capable to repeat the same sacrifice of Christ. Many have followed suit since, even today. Maybe we will never be called to be martyrs in the same sense of Stephen, but when we take seriously our desire to love the people we say we love, we certainly wish we could do anything for them, In the sacrifice of the martyrs, in the sacrifice of peo-ple who truly love someone else there is this promise of eternity that only the Spirit of Christ fulfills.
