We use recycled cat food cans, but any small can will do for this craft. While we love gardening outdoors, plantin
mall herbs and flowers indoors is so much easier. Its also very rewarding, especially when you are using recyc
materials to plant them! You can read about our indoor gardening experience here:

Can Planters
We dont have much of a green thumb, but small inside plants weve seemed to have luck with. Placed in
sunny window, a small planter can give you fresh herbs and lovely little flowers. This project we came acr
ew years ago, and is easy enough for the kids to do on their own. Only one step requires a bit of parenta
assistant.
Step 1 Gather Materials
You will need:
Small Tin Can (we used a cat food can)
Clothes Pins
Paints
Hammer and Nail

Step 2 Prep Can
Since this will be a planter, we tapped a small hole in the bottom of the can. This is the adults part, obviou
because it involves adult tools. Tap very gently it is not difficult to pierce the tin.

Step 3 Decorate Clothes Pins
This step is actually optional, but clothes pins are too boring for us not to paint. Acrylic paints or even Sha
are fantastic for adding a splash of color. Here is an example of pins Jillian decorated:

completely up to you.
Step 4 Clip to Can

After your pins are decorated, just clip them to the side of the can. In Jillians example, she purposely left

pin because it would mess up her pattern. We had to space them a little differently, but it looks perfect
egardless.
Step 5 Plant
Add soil up to the edge of the can. Plant flowers or herbs inside, and set them in the window. Jillians flow
has a spot in our window right next the basil:
Weve also started using plastic lids from random containers under our planters. Not only do they take up
oom, but add one more way to recycle.

Final Note
We plan to make several more of these nifty planters, and start a mini-herb garden in the window. Having
herbs on hand in the kitchen is WONDERFUL. The basil we grew this summer was PERFECT with home
spaghetti sauce made with tomatoes from the outdoor garden. Yet we can do better, and plan to plant ore
dill, and a few other herbs we use on a regular basis.
