Lindemann Scrap Baling Presses – Always a Step AheadOur scrap baling presses have an excellent reputationin scrap yards, car body plants, aluminum processingplants and non-ferrous metal remelting works. Theycompact melted iron, sheet metal and wire scrap intosquare edged bales – a preferred feed material for steelmills, foundries and remelting plants.

It has been a long way from the launch of the firstLindemann hydraulically operated scrap baler at thebeginning of the 1920s to today’s new Lindemann RAS

scrap baler series. Our comprehensive know-how,combined with advance in-depth studies of userindustries requirement, led to a new baler generation,which sets standards for efficient scrap processing.

With the new triple, double and single-acting shear-type balers of the Lindemann RAS series our engineershave not only achieved but surpassed the pre-deter-mined aims with regard to operating reliability, flexibil-ity and operating costs.

Fast and efficientOur special drive and control concepts make for highthroughput capacity and favorable energy consump-tion. Combined measures have helped to reduce cycletimes in the new hydraulic system by up to 50 percentwithout increasing the power supply.

The Lindemann RAS series is the first generation ofscrap balers to operate with a peak hydraulic pressureof 350 bars. This means that smaller cylinders can beused with the same pressure forces – and smallercylinders mean less oil to move. Because fewer than 10percent of all cylinder movements happen in the high-pressure range, 90 percent of the working movementscan be made at the same drive power but at muchhigher speeds.

By means of our special oil transfer system, the oilreturning from one cylinder can be used directly tospeed up the advance of another cylinder workingunder low load conditions. In addition, hydraulic oilflow splitting makes it possible to feed oil to severalcylinders at the same time. Both features furtherreduce cycle times.

Thanks to the new infinitely variable positioningsystem integrated in all cylinders, trouble with limit andproximity switches due to dirt and falling scrap is nowa thing of the past. The new positioning system alsomeans that, for the first time ever, piston position,speed and acceleration can be determined along theentire travel distance. This makes it possible to controlthe optimum hydraulic switch positions and speed upthe bale cycle.

Extensive pre-assembly at the factory

A further innovation for scrap processing machines isWearCon – patent pending –, the optional automaticwear monitoring system. It signals automatically andwell in advance when it is time for a wear plate to bereplaced.Wear indicators installed in exposed positionsin the press transmit the required information via anelectric signal to the multi-information terminal of thepress. Plant operators can thus plan their procurementof spare parts and replacements more effectively andwithout any urgency.

Compact and attachedRigidity calculations with the aid of the Infinite ElementMethod (FEM) have resulted in highly compact, space-saving designs. The idea of space-saving installation – particularly important to the automotive industry –was also a consistent factor in the design andarrangement of hydraulic and drive aggregates.

Extensive pre-assembly of the balers at the factoryincluding the attachment of hydraulic blocks and thepipelines leading from these to the cylinders hashelped to achieve shorter installation times and im-proved commissioning conditions.

Integrated and visualized Our multi-information terminal provides easy opera-tion and quick and easy troubleshooting when neces-sary. Graphics display, process data visualization andonline help in the desired language are state-of-the-art.

Bale length and pressing force of the RAS series areselectable at the multi-information terminal for flexibleadjustment to different logistics requirements. And acombination of the computer-operated control systemwith an additional weighing system makes bales ofuniform length with maximum density possible.

Display and processing of baler operating data,production figures and status figures is also possibleon decentralized computers. To ensure that help andeconomical support are always available, our remotediagnosis and software updates via teleservice areavailable as an option.

Protected and reliableThe comprehensive wear protection of the Lindemannscrap balers extends operating periods and minimizestime-consuming maintenance and repair work. Fur-thermore, our design solutions of the RAS series helpwhen exchanging wear parts and avoid the labor-intensive dismantling of complete compression units.PLC controlled central lubrication of all RAS balerguides reduces wear and ensures trouble-free opera-tion.

The special washboard profile of the RAS balers’ wearplates helps prevent the dreaded "plate jam" causedby thin pieces of metal and off cuts and the resultingexpensive operational interruptions.

Extra long parallel guides assure low friction andsmooth running strokes of the compression units. Thelong guides and adjustable stops of the compressionunits ensure also that the pressure platen reaches thecorrect end position even in the event of wear and tear.

Dynamic and smoothThe infinitely variable measuring system is the onlyone that facilitates dynamic monitoring of the oil level,which offers operational safety and environmentaladvantages, as even the lowest oil losses are recog-nized and indicated.

Thanks to computer simulations of the hydraulic logiccontrol, our new hydrologic valve blocks ensure fasterbut smoother working cycles.

And last, but by no means least, optional energyefficiency circuit and electric peak load control enablethe energy-conscious user to further reduce powerconsumption and operating costs.

Metso Minerals is oriented to efficient cost-benefitratios in all areas. Thus, in Lindemann RAS scrap balingpresses, the pressure forces, for example, are set withreference both to the specific surface pressure requiredand to the criterion of economic justifiability.

All hydraulic cylinders are equipped with theinfinitely variable posi-tioning system.
