Coals or ash fresh from the barbeque grill should never be placed directly into trash containers. Please follow these tips for safe disposal.
• Allow the coals to cool for at least 48 hours in the grill, 72 hours for extra precaution, then place them in a metal container with a tight lid. • Never place hot coals in plastic, paper or wood containers.• Once coals and ash are cooled, dispose of them in your trash container. *Do not place coals or ashes inside your recycling or green waste containers.

Food waste has become a problem throughout our nation. It ends up in landfills and is harmful to the environment as it emits methane, a greenhouse gas. One factor in creating food waste is by people misinterpreting expiration labels. Studies show that fixing food date labels is the most cost effective solution for reducing food waste. As such, California Legislatorsare currently working on legislation to standardize labels. Meanwhile, here’s how you can help:
Understand the expiration labels• A “Sell-By” date tells the store how long to display the product for sale. Product should be purchased before this date.• A “Best if Used By (or Before)” date is recommended for best flavor or quality. This refers strictly to quality, not safety.• A “Use-By” date is the last date recommended for use of the product. Discard product after this date.
Tips• Purchase the product before the expiration date.• If perishable, take the food home immediately after purchase and refrigerate it promptly. Freeze it if you can’t use it within times recommended on chart.• Once a perishable product is frozen, it doesn’t matter if the date expires because foods kept frozen continuously are safe indefinitely.• Follow handling recommendations on product.
