Farm Tire CollectionRegistration is Required to Recycle Farm Tires

The agricultural community will once again have an opportunity to recycle their unwanted farm tires through a collection sponsored by the Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca Joint Solid Waste District. The event will be held at the Sandusky County Fairgrounds in Fremont in the north parking lot. This collection is open to farm owners, operators and residents in the District (including all Bellevue and Fostoria residents). ABSOLUTELY NO DEALERS or AGRI-BUSINESSES WILL BE PERMITTED.

Pre-registration is required to participate. Registration will begin Monday, August 13th at 8:00 a.m. and will end Friday, August 24th at 4:30 p.m. Prior to calling the office, please know the number of tires by type/size that you would like to recycle. When the office is contacted, a representative from the District will provide you with a time and date to deliver your tires and confirm the cost based on the quantity and height of tires being recycled. To determine the size of your tire, please measure the tire from the ground to the top of the tire.

It is important that all participants bring proof of residency (driver’s license) to the collection site. This will verify your registration and speed the process of generating a receipt for your records. Pre-register by calling the District’s main office at 419-334-7222 or toll free at 1-888-850-7224.

Pricing for farm tires by type/size is as follows:

• Tires up to 36” including implement tires, wagon tires, skid loader tires, most front tires and 4-wheeler tires will be accepted at a cost of $1.00 per tire.

• Tires 37” to 60” (most rear tractor & semi tires) at $10.00 per tire.

• Tires 61” and larger including large rear tractor tires and all combine tires (regardless of height) will also be accepted at $15.00 per tire.

• Tires with rims will be accepted.

The tires collected are recycled and used to make tire rings used as construction barrel weights or to hold down plastic covers or tarps. Recycled tires can also become crumb rubber, a material used in artificial turf on athletic fields. Additional finished products from tires include asphalt rubber used in road surfaces, tire turf used to make playground surfacing, rubber rock (an aggregate alternative) and tire derived fuel (a source of energy used in power plants).

To determine the type/size of your tire, please measure your tire from the ground to the top of the tire as seen in

the picture to the left.

Pre-register: Monday, August 13th until Friday, August 24th

Solid Notes

The District has recently hired Manuel “Manny” Guitierrez to fill an open Recycling Collection Assistant position. Recycling Specialist, Jim Darr, is glad the position is filled once again. “Our collection services at the schools and other public facilities are an important part of our daily operations,” said Darr, “The addition of Manny will allow our office to better serve each of our collection sites.” Manuel will be responsible for servicing recycling pickups, helping maintain Aim to Be Green recycling drop-off sites and assisting at the District’s Recycling & Processing Center. Manny will also perform light maintenance duties.

CompostWorkshop

The District would like to thank those who participated in this year’s Compost Workshop. There were a total of 22 residents who attended the morning and afternoon sessions on Wednesday, May 9th at Meadowbrook Park in Bascom. Debbie Haubert, Naturalist for the Sandusky County Park District, presented essential information to participants on how to build their compost pile. She described the five factors that are necessary in managing a successful compost pile and provided helpful hints on ways to solve problems. Following the program, participants’ names were randomly drawn for door prizes. Also, Meadowbrook Park Manager, Dick Freeborn, shared the history and stories from the parks past. We would like to thank the Sandusky County Park District for their continued partnership and Meadowbrook Park for allowing the workshop to be held at their facility.

Celebrating 28 Years cont’d...Keiffer, Steve Kessler and John Lesniewicz. Their common appreciation for the outdoors and fellowship has instilled a strong bond.

The group members have adopted two stretches of roadway close to their club. One, in Carroll Township, Toussaint North Rd. from Benton Carroll Rd. to Duff-Washa Road and in Salem Township, Portage River South Rd. from Oak Harbor Southeast Rd. to Muddy Creek North Rd. A lot of memories have been made along those roadways over the years, but one funny story “in good clean fun” sticks out to one group member, Dennis Finke.

Finke said they decided to drive the “clean-up” due to hot temperatures, with a driver and two guys working in the back of the truck. They separated the trash, as they went, into 5-gallon buckets. The driver could reach the bucket of aluminum cans in the bed of the truck. Unbeknownst to the two guys in the back, the driver was pitching the cans back out the front windows as fast as the two could pick them up along the roadway. The two guys working were none too happy when they realized what had happened.

Tim Wasserman, District Director of the OSS Solid Waste District, is thankful for the time and effort the group has contributed to the program over the years.

“This is a great group of guys who are committed to community service while helping the environment,” said Wasserman, “As a result they have formed lasting friendships.”

The Oak Harbor Conservation Club alone has contributed an estimated 940 volunteer hours collecting 425 bags of litter and debris weighing 8,742 pounds since they began cleaning their roadways in 1989.

Local Entities Receive District FundsCompetitive Funding Grant: First Funding Round

Ten organizations received funding to start recycling programs or to buy products made from recycled materials in the first round of competitive funding offered by the Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca Joint Solid Waste Management District. The grant program’s main priority is to set up recycling programs for educational institutions, governmental entities or non-profit organizations. Any agency applying must have a recycling program in place in order to apply for funds for products made from recycled material. The applicant must match a minimum of 25% of the total project cost, and products must contain at least 25% recycled material. Entities receiving grant funding for products made from recycled materials include: Ballville Township Trustees - $1,568 for picnic tables and benches, Benton Township Trustees - $5,944 for playground equipment, Humane

Society of Sandusky County - $404 for benches, Main Street Port Clinton - $7,127 for flower boxes, Meadowbrook Park - Hopewell Township - $6,975 for campground site markers, Village of Oak Harbor - $6,799 for benches and tables, Ottawa Soil & Water Conservation District - $1,875 for benches, Put-In-Bay Township Park District - $6,164 for recycling containers, Riders Unlimited - $5,452 for a sign, recycled furniture and benches and Terra State Community College - $7692 for picnic tables and benches. Amy Drummer, Assistant Director of the Solid Waste District, administers the grant program and sees the direct benefits to the community. “Our grant program’s first priority is funding for new recycling programs or improvements to existing recycling programs. Once those programs are in place, organizations are able to apply

for funds to purchase products made from recycled materials. These funding opportunities bring the recycling process full circle by showcasing the many examples of items that are made from recycled products, which pushes the recycling goals of the District out in front of our residents every day.” For more information about the District’s Competitive Funding Grant program or to register in the future for required grant meetings, contact Assistant Director, Amy Drummer toll free at1-888-850-7224 or send a direct email to:[email protected].

Education and awareness is an important part of the District’s mission. The District worked with Woodville Township officials to place bright red signage on the recycle bins at Woodville Township.

The message - “Keep Locks Up - To Keep Lids Down”.

The lid locks are positioned on the recycling containers to help keep the lids down on windy days. This helps to prevent loose material from blowing out of the container.
