63rd ANNUAL Report

The club has now completed its 63rd year of operation and the way in which the season unfolded is documented in the following pages by way of reports and photographs.

In January 2016 the club hosted the 60th Owen Chapman Cup surf carnival, the longest running club day for surf athletes in Australasia. Nearly 350 competitors from 15 clubs turned out for the carnival and witnessed the inaugural Candy Stripes Eliminator event.

The club has now completed its seventh consecutive year of patrolling at Pakiri where club lifeguards

The Club Committee of the Red Beach Surf Life Saving Club (Inc)presents for your adoption the 63rd Annual Report andFinancial Statement for the year ended 30th April 2016.

THE 2015/2016 SEASONcarried out 30 rescues, greater than the total for the three preceding seasons.

MembershipSurf membership remains

buoyant although the slight drop in active membership can be attributed to lower numbers in the ranks of U19 men. Around 72% of the club’s active members are involved in both competition and patrolling while 28% choose to patrol only.

JuniorSurf membership, at 368, is just one off the all-time record number for the 2011-12 season.

Surf Lifeguard Award numbers (43) have grown

again and reflect the movement of Rookies into Senior ranks.

Spearheading the training of candidates for the Surf Lifeguard Award was Wade Downey who was a finalist for Instructor of the Year at the SLSNR Awards of Excellence night.

At this function, our very own Patricia Olsen was awarded Life membership of SLSNR, just the third Red Beach member to be the recipient of this award.

We were particularly saddened to lose Nick Saull who died tragically in June. The obituary to Nick appears on page 34 of this report.

63rd Annual Report & Financial Statement 2015-2016 SeasonPage 16

President’s ReportFor me, two of the highlights

of the 2015/16 season were events at each end of the summer and not on the beach or in the water. The first was a working bee in September when a large band of enthusiastic club members supervised by some real “tradies” undertook the demolition of the old bar and kitchen area in preparation for the construction and installation of what everybody agrees is a fantastic new facility.

The second highlight was also another great example of club spirit and unity with a working bee in May to undertake various finishing, “temporary” finishing and painting to markedly improve the club’s appearance (although very obviously still not finished). To me, both these events clearly demonstrated the spirit and strength of our club. As important as the financial benefit is the camaraderie and support generated by so many people donating possibly their most precious commodity, their time!

The 2015/16 competition

season for the Senior club will not rank as one of our best although there were some fantastic individual performances including wins by our U23 Men’s Surf Boat (Long Course) crew and U16 Men’s Board Relay team at Nationals and the two second places for our Open Men’s and U23 Men’s Surf Boat crews in the New Zealand Surf Boat Series.

Congratulations to Kelsi Boocock for her selection in the SLSNZ Development Squad. Outside of surf but still in the water, Karl McMurtrie and

Briar McLeely have and will be representing New Zealand in U23 Flatwater Kayaking and Caitlin Ryan will become Red Beach’s 10th Olympian when she competes in the WK4 500 at the Rio Olympics in August. Congratulations and best wishes to all these athletes.

The start of the surf sports season also saw the arrival of Jack Gavin as our new Senior Coach and the “retirement” of Vaughan Skiffington after approx. 14 seasons as Club Coach. Our thanks to both Vaughan and Jack for their contributions. Over his time in the coaching role, Vaughan was recognised by both SLSNR and SLSNZ as Coach of the Year on several occasions and helped the club secure the Allan Gardner Trophy in 2006. In total, Vaughan has been a Red Beach member for 24 seasons, being a committed patrolling member and definitely no slouch as a competitor, winning 35 national medals including three open titles. We are hopeful that while Vaughan is stepping back from his official coaching role he will continue to be actively involved with the club for the foreseeable future.

In Jack we have a fantastic replacement who can also call on a highly successful competitive career with numerous national titles in ski, board, relay and iron man. Jack’s skills and enthusiasm can already be seen as the club goes through a rebuilding period ahead of inevitable further success.

The performance of the

club’s Juniors also augurs well for the future with total

Junior enrolments at 368 for the season and some great competitive success including the regaining of the Northern Region Junior Championships title and a very good third place finish at the Oceans 16 event. As always the Club’s Junior ranks were incredibly well managed and my thanks to Dylan Turner and his army of supporters for their usual meticulous management.

Across Red Beach and Pakiri our lifeguards amassed a total of 3,226 voluntary hours with 33 rescues being completed (16 in previous season). Although repeating what I have said in previous year’s reports and despite our large membership, there are still many occasions when we struggle to meet our patrolling commitments and as always there are some individuals who do more than their share.

A particular thanks to Peter Kramer, recognised as our ‘Best All-Round Patrolling Member’ and to Debra Cairns and Craig Gledhill for their time and effort in organising and managing patrols.

Two successful squash tournaments were held over the course of the season. The Club’s junior programme is building momentum with well attended regular coaching and strong links to local colleges encouraging increasing junior numbers.

My thanks to Debra Cairns for her continued diligent administration of the club’s affairs. What began as a part time role is now very much full time as our club continues to

grow and expand. Our financial position, although solid, is continually under pressure to meet the varying and increasing demands for additional physical and people resources. As will be noted in the financial reports our bar provides the bulk of the revenue and it is very pleasing to see the growth in returns that have accompanied the redevelopment. Thanks to Greg Adams, Lisa Fellowes and their respective teams for their work over the season and in particular their efforts in maintaining hospitality through the construction period and now managing the substantially increased popularity of our new club facilities.

I would like to thank our sponsors, many of whom have supported Red Beach for a number of years:

I would love to have been able to conclude this report by noting the completion of our long running club redevelopment but unfortunately we are still not there. Thanks to the very generous support we

received from NZ Lottery Grants Board we have completed the bulk of the extension and recladding of the south western section. With the support of the Boocock Family we were able to complete the bar and kitchen redevelopment which is further assisting in generating increased revenues to fund both the renovations and general club activity. We are hopeful of gaining funding from Auckland Council through the Surf 10:20 initiative and have also lodged an application with Foundation North. On the assumption that we are successful with these approaches and combined with further member and supporter contributions and fund raising activity, we are hopeful of completing the building project within the next 12 months.

Finally, thanks to all our members and wider community for your support over yet another busy season. Congratulations to Pat Olsen for her well-deserved receipt of Life Membership of SLSNR, Michelle Newton for her Distinguished Service Award and Jack Smith for his Rescue of the Year award at the recent Northern Region Awards of Excellence.

Lifesaving ReportOnce again a busy season

was experienced by our lifeguards as we continued to patrol both Red Beach and Pakiri.

I would like to thank all those who made 2015/16 a successful one … our lifeguards, IRB and lifeguard award instructors, our maintenance IRB/quad crew, first aid supply coordinator, Sarah Jenkinson as well as Craig Gledhill and Pete Kramer (Pakiri organisation and Pakiri IRB support) . The statistics listed in this report reinforce the massive contribution that our club members have given to patrolling Red Beach and Pakiri. The magnificent summer meant that we had a huge increase in

public numbers at our two beaches.

Patrol audits met a high standard, our equipment was maintained at an exceedingly high level of operation and there was good participation in training for new awards (FA2 and IRB), development and leadership camps.

We had several serious first aid incidents during the season where our lifeguards were called on as first response first aiders and we had great feedback from the patients regarding the exceptional effort and professional manner in which our lifeguards attended to these matters. With the changing beach conditions at Pakiri during the season, our

patrols had a few weekends where they were kept busy in challenging conditions, which included entire patrols who were involved in board/tube and IRB rescues. Congratulations to all involved. Regular annual opportunities to upskill and refresh in lifeguarding, First Aid and IRBs ensure we continue to provide this excellent service to the public.

Patrol attendances were, in the main, very good. The commitment of some to patrolling was outstanding; they carried out more than their share when our resources were pushed to the limits. Unfortunately a small number, by their indifference or absence, let themselves and their fellow clubbies down.

Red Beach lifeguards on patrol at Pakiri Beach on Boxing Day 2015. Over the course of the summer, club lifeguards carried out a total of 30 rescues at Pakiri.

Again, the Carnival Patrol covered both beaches on every weekend that carnivals were held. Their dedication deserves the respect and thanks of every competitor who had a summer free of patrolling on competition days.

Congratulations go to Pete Kramer who received Best All Round Patrolling Member award and Sean Casey as

the U16 Lifeguard of the Year winner.

Reflecting on of this year’s patrol organisation, going back to the old patrol system with patrol co-ordinators will benefit the organisation of our large patrolling numbers. With patrol co-ordinators overseeing each patrol, the organisation and attendance numbers can be managed

more efficiently.

We will focus on the 2016 winter season with a drive to upskill more members throughout our membership in IRBs and FA2 in order to spread the load on patrols.

Demolition Day at the club

The demolition of the club bar & kitchen was carried out over the weekend of 12/13 September 2015. A remarkable number of club members and tradies turned up to carry out the job, all voluntarily. The bulk of the demolition was achieved in 4-5 hours, clearing the way for the construction and installation of a brand new bar & kitchen.

The club kitchen was closed for business for a six-week period, re-opening on Friday 23 October 2015.

Sport Manager’s ReportThe 2015-2016 sports

season saw a mixture of results for the club with outstanding performances and results in some areas of surf sport and, as always, a few hard luck stories and gaps in others. Generally speaking, the club is well represented across the Junior and Senior division age groups in terms of active membership numbers which was evident at both the Junior Oceans ‘16 event and the NZ Senior Nationals by having the largest teams at both events.

Our boat and canoe divisions enjoyed healthy crew numbers across all age groups. The boat arena has been a sea of Red and White caps all season which is testament to the culture that has been built over the past few seasons. No doubt a product of great leadership from the likes of Craig Dillon, Bugsy O’Halloran and Mike Smith among others.

The board and ski division is slowly flourishing with healthy numbers of U16 competitors, both male and female, coming through from the Junior Rookie programme. With a focus on retention going forward, the future bodes well for increasing numbers in the U19 and open age groups.

The season started with the appointment of an additional Senior coach in Jack Gavin. Jack came on board in October 2015 to work through a handover process with our

long standing Senior club coach Vaughan Skiffington who has stepped aside from the head role.

Jack is a born and bred Gisborne bloke who spent many years successfully competing and coaching at the Midway SLS club. This season, between Vaughan and Jack, we had an unmatched coaching resource available for our athletes which created a solid platform for Jack to continue with in going forward. I would personally like to thank Vaughan for his incredible commitment to our club in both a competition and coaching capacity.

There were many events during the season that were generally well attended by the club. The Junior club again performed well this season, regaining the NRC Championships Trophy at Orewa Beach. Along the way there were some NZ records broken at the pool champs. The club finished a close third behind Omanu and Waikanae at the NZ Championships “Ocean 16” at Mt Maunganui.

The Senior club competed well during the season with a young team consisting mainly of U16 & U19 men and women with a few open competitors jumping in which was great to see. The new coaching programme and training intensity started to show through with some excellent results coming from the U16 age groups in particular.

The club enjoyed some new initiatives at the Owen Chapman carnival, injecting a new event into the programme - The Candy Stripes Eliminator - a Chris Gurr special. It was an event highlight which was won by our very own coach Jack Gavin who led by example in spectacular fashion in front of his young charges. No pressure for next season Jack!! A special thanks to our own members and their private companies for sponsoring the Eliminator event.

Moving on through the season, the Nationals at Ohope Beach proved bitter sweet when the event was cut short due to adverse conditions. This is a sign of things to come within our sport with respect to health and safety requirements which are well and truly here to stay.

The club won 11 medals at the Nationals at Ohope Beach with our two golden performances coming from the U16 Men’s board relay team and the U23 Pirates boat crew. A good result and something we will definitely build on for next season.

I’d also like to extend my thanks to all the beach managers, supporters and of course the athletes for their efforts over the season. Bring on the 2016-17 season!

60th Owen Chapman Cup Surf Carnival

The 60th Owen Chapman Cup surf carnival, hosted by Red Beach on Saturday 9th January 2016, attracted 342 competitors from 15 clubs. Neighbouring club Orewa won the carnival on overall points with Red Beach second and Piha third.

The event has always been contested at Red Beach; it was first held in 1957 as a ‘picnic’ carnival for Auckland’s east coast surf clubs. It has since become the longest running club day in Australasia for surf athletes.

New to the programme was the Candy Stripes Eliminator, a gut-busting surf event in which competitors raced off against each other and the clock. It began with a mass swim from the buoy line and ended five events later with beach flags as the decider. The total prize pool was $1,050.

Surf Boat Captain’s ReportThis season saw the usual

contenders back for another crack … Open Men - the Boomers, U23 Men -the Pirates & U19 Women - The Angels, and returning for a second season, the Open Women’s Bangers crew swept by Mus. We also saw a new U23 Women’s crew - the Rabbits with rookie sweep Jed Wright.

At the start of 2016 we welcomed to Red Beach an Open Women’s crew - the Muzzies who had competed very successfully for Muriwai during the previous two seasons. Then there was the ‘phantom crew’ – the U23 Men’s Doom Squad. For varying reasons they struggled to get four rowers on the same day although they did manage to grace us at several carnivals.

It’s not an easy task to organise/train this number of crews so there are several people I need to thank. Firstly, all of the sweeps … Bugsy, Mus, Jed, Gordy and Mike.

We are very fortunate to have Veronika Cox as our Team Manager, Team Mum, Team Driver and of course those amazing photos she takes as Team Photographer. She also makes sure each crew is aware of their alley

draws and oversees our subsidy scheme. She is ably assisted by, when he’s not officiating, Bruce Whitehead. Bruce is the first to the beach to organise the tents and usually the last to leave, ensuring everything is tidy and everyone gets home.

With Red Beach having so many crews, the onus was on us to provide more officials in our arena. We were fortunate to have, along with Bruce, Zita and her ever increasing “bump” which helped to make up the Red Beach contingent. Michelle Newton, our club chairperson and long standing surfboat official, was nominated for Surf Official of the Year at this year’s Awards of Excellence.

Another from our group, Jack Smith, won the SLSNR Rescue of the Year award. Congratulations!

After every carnival there is an amazing and informative newsletter outlining the action, the successes and the hard luck stories. It gets emailed to all of our group, to former Red Beach boaties both at home and overseas, the senior people of our club and all of our sponsors. This was undertaken by Nina Schoonbeck-Berridge from the Rabbits crew.

Finally, to our two major Sponsors … Bryan & Pat of The Flying Herons who were there once again supporting us, both on and off the beach. They enabled us to purchase a new trailer and two new boat covers as well as supporting our Pub to Club row and the

Owen Chapman Cup. Argosy Property are the other half of our ‘fantastic duo’. Over the past 3 years, Argosy’s support has enabled us to turn around an ageing fleet of boats and some very tired oars; and they have helped us to bring through some new lifeguards, not just to our sport of surf boats but also the number of lifeguards on the beaches. This season, just about every crew on patrol was called on to assist in either a medical emergency or water rescue. The Doom Squad crew performed 12 rescues in one afternoon at Pakiri Beach. On behalf of all our crews and supporters, we thank you for both for your support.

The pinnacle of the year is the Nationals and this season they were held at Ohope Beach where we had all 7 crews competing. Unfortunately, the conditions on finals day were some of the gnarliest I’ve seen at Nationals. However, all of our crews acquitted themselves very well in the testing conditions. The standout crew for Red Beach were the Pirates who won Gold in the U23 Men’s Long Course and Silver in the Short course. The other crew to medal was the U19 Women’s crew the Angels who took Bronze in their Short Course event.

Open Men – BoomersDuring the off-season,

Boomers sweep Bugsy O’Halloran was contacted by Hayden Smith, an experienced

surf boat rower who had rowed for Bugsy in previous years and wished to join the Red Beach Boomers for the summer. After a quick appraisal of Hayden’s body condition and a chat with Jed Wright, Charlie Graham and Shamus O’Halloran, the Boomers crew for 2015-2016 was locked in.

This crew showed from the start of the season they had boat speed to challenge the best of crews with their second place in Wellington in the first round of the NZ Surf Boat Series. That boat speed saw the Boomers make finals in all events during the year, being selected as the Northern Region Open men’s representative crew, winning gold at ERCs and NRCs, bronze at the North Island Champs and 2nd in the NZ surfboat series.

They made the finals at Nationals but were unable to

achieve a podium position in a year that saw a record number of Open Men competitors and very good crews.

The Boomers are now preparing to take on the world and represent Red Beach in September 2016 at the World Surf Lifesaving Championships at Noordwijk in the Netherlands.

Bugsy O’Halloran

Open Women – MuzziesThe Muzzies joined us

halfway through the season and their first chance to row competitively for Red Beach was at our Owen Chapman carnival. In the tent the ladies told Bugsy they just wanted to row, but on the water their fierce determination showed us all they were more than a crew that just wanted to row. In their first hit-out of the season they finished second overall. From there, the crew of Andrea Gerrard, Billie Haresnape, Emma Wilson,

The Red Beach Boomers crew competing in the open men’s division at the 60th Owen Chapman Cup surf carnival at Red Beach in January 2016. They took out first place over the series of races.

Patria Harris and sweep Bugsy set themselves the target of making finals at all remaining carnivals. The girls smashed their targets, making all finals and claiming gold at both ERCs and NRCs.

The Muzzies are a wonderful crew of young women who have great attitudes and only see positives in everything they are involved in. There is no such thing as a Muzzie not smiling and those smiles are infectious to our whole group. Sadly, Andrea copped an oar to the mouth in the women’s final at Nationals and had her front teeth re-arranged. A badly swollen mouth and lips and a broken smile did not stop Andrea from cracking jokes and laughing from her hospital bed in A&E with her crew all around her. Fortunately, corrective treatment has returned Andrea’s beautiful smile to us.

A special thanks to boat

captain Blakey and Masters rower Gordon Williams who pitched in to help the Muzzies with training throughout the season.

Bugsy O’Halloran

U23 Men – PiratesThe Pirates had three goals

for the 2015-2016 season and were unashamedly bloody-minded about achieving them. #1 Achieve NZ Rep selection. #2 Win North Island Champions title #3 Win NZ title. Now with all crew members having had at least a season under their belts and with thicker skin from Bugsy beatings, this crew knew it was time to step up and prove to themselves they can be the best U23 crew in the country.

Whangamata, however, had other ideas and came out of the blocks at the start of the season faster and harder. Whangamata were favoured for NZ selection by

the selectors and denied the Pirates of achieving their first goal. With fire in their bellies, Rhye Jacka, Kyle Lennon, Luke Tomlinson, Max Anstis, Ryan Davenport and Bugsy O’Halloran resolved to nail the remaining two goals.

The Pirates did just that. They won Northern Region representative selection, took Gold at NRCs and podium finishes at ERCs, were 2nd overall in the NZ Surf Boat series, won the North Island Championships title and won the NZ Long Course title and gained a silver medal in the Short Course final.

As well as bringing a harder game to the beach this season the Pirates enjoyed a lot of laughs and silly dumb stuff that only a Pirates crew can do. Their season was very successful but also extremely enjoyable.

U19 Women – AngelsA slight Bugsy adaptation

of Luciano Crescenzo’s quote expresses our Angels crew focus for the year “We are, each of us angels, each with only one oar; and we can only row by embracing one another, as one”.

The Angels’ focus for the year was for all four ladies to row together as one, no solo rowers in the crew. Row as a crew with discipline, combined determination, courage and commitment to each other and these young women gave this to each other in truckloads and their results throughout the year showed this. Georgia Cox, Tyler McDowall, Jessica Cornish and Briana Smith gelled and together achieved Northern Region representative selection, won double Gold at ERCs and NRCs, won the North Island Champion title, and claimed a bronze medal at NZ Champs.

These four ladies are a heap of fun, great clubbies and know how to row a surfboat. If they continue to row for Red Beach through the grades, our club is in great shape for more great results.

From a personal point of view I was unsure what sweeping an U19 women’s crew would be like. I enjoyed working with these ladies and challenging them. They never let me down and delivered everything I asked of them. Thank you Angels, you should all be very proud of your season, I am.

Bugsy O’Halloran

U23 Women -The RabbitsThe brand new Red

Beach Rabbits crew of Nicole McCormick, Kathleen Oneroa, Olivia Soesbergen, Sarah Fraser and Nina Schoonbeck-Berridge started in late-October with a new sweep in Jed Wright, a rower with one season’s sweep experience

taking four brand new rowers who were ready and eager to give it everything. We had a season full of hard work, heaps of laughs, huge improvements and eventually started to test the competition as the season went on. I am very proud of the girls’ efforts and attitudes throughout the season and I’m happy to say all the Rabbits are ready to stamp their mark on the coming season with only one rower having to move up to open women’s division. As the rabbits say … “we like it rough”.

Jed Wright

U23 Men - Doom SquadThe Doom Squad moved up

to the U23 grade this season and found the change to be challenging after enjoying relative success in the U19 grade over the previous two seasons.

Alex Cassidy, Callum Blackburn, Doug Burfoot, Jack Smith, Brendan Herbst and sweeps Tamati Munro and Mike Smith began the pre-season with enthusiasm but ran into a wall when Tamati successfully gained a position on the Spirit of NZ circumnavigating the country and became limited in his availability to sweep. Brendan found that his new building apprenticeship required him to work Saturdays and Alex was still studying in Otago. Callum was working weekends and Jack and Doug were also scavenging all the student work they could find. Ricky Daniel-Nield arrived to bolster the ranks but quickly found his shift work in the Navy clashed with key carnival dates.

The result was a season of struggling to fill the seats in the boat and juggle the usual Uni student/apprentice lifestyle balance. Let’s say it was a year of learning about priorities and personal time management .

The crew are all good mates and proud Red Beach SLSC members who vow to come

back bigger and better next season. Tamati has declared 2016/17 to be ‘the year of the Doom Squad’.

On the bright side, their patrol at Pakiri (and Ricky’s first RB patrol) resulted in 12 successful rescues. They competed at Omaha, Whangamata, the Owen Chapman carnival, NI Champs at Waihi and the Nationals at Ohope. They proudly maintained their record of not snapping a sweep oar while racing.

Mike Smith

Open Women - The BangersThe Bangers had another

tough season having to blood new rowers into the team culture. The early mornings and gut busting erg sessions set the foundations of the tight team culture (the culture most teams can only dream of). Consistency was the downfall for the Bangers this season, with no two consecutive competitions fielding the same crew. This made the race dynamics difficult and race strategy tough to cement and reassure the crew of a winning formula.

Nevertheless, there were many ol’ laughs (and tears) throughout the season but what I was most proud of was that the determination and effort never faltered when hit with adversity. The crew grew throughout the season as did my belief in them heading into Nationals. Unfortunately the conditions weren’t favourable to our strengths (long and flat). Regardless, the ladies worked hard and narrowly missed out on finals spots by the skin of their teeth. It was a thoroughly enjoyable season ladies, I hope you’ve continued the hard work over the past three months as pre-season training starts tomorrow 630pm taka #20sixpack.

Surf Canoe ReportThe 2015-16 season started

in cold conditions with the Long Distance carnival at Mairangi Bay on 10 October. A new U19 men’s crew and two U19 women’s crews went all out from the start and led all the way to win their divisions.

At the start of the season, Red Beach acquired its fifth newly designed Boulder Bay canoe; a big ‘thank you’ is extended to the new sponsors.

With some slight changes to all the original canoe crews and the arrival of the fifth canoe, all five men’s crews were ready to compete, thanks to Nick & Jan Saull of Brin Wilson Boats for some fast and fantastic repairs. The Auckland & North Island carnivals were competed at with 100% turnouts and won by Red Beach crews with fellow crews following in hot pursuit.

In the lead up to the carnivals at the Mount and Omaha, Red Beach crews intensified their training. This paid dividends because at the NRC’s at Omaha

in February, Red Beach canoe teams in all grades, male and female, took out medals in every event on both days, a great outcome with the approach of the Nationals.

Heading into the Nationals, our main sponsors The Flying Herons made sure the crews were all OK with their accommodation and team clothing. The Nationals kicked off with Masters events with all our canoe crews taking part and taking out Gold & Silver medals.

The next two days of the Nationals saw racing in the Long Course and Short Course events with 48 crews and 240 lifeguards competing. Red Beach was the only Auckland club with crews in all grades to reach the semis. Several of the crews reached the finals and came so close to podium finishes.

Throughout the season there was, yet again, a great team effort by all Red Beach crews. In total there were 18 Open & Masters men, 10 Open & Masters women, nine U19 girls

and five U19 boys. These 42 Red Beach members delivered some great points tallies at carnivals.

The 2016-17 season is on its way and we have, on our shopping list, more male and female Open & Masters crews and more U19 crews. In teaming up, and with the help of last year’s crews, they will forge some great friendships as we move into the new season.

The crews of the 2015-16 season were …

Open Men Flying Malyons, Lion Red, Seaing Red, Red Beach Rascals, Red Barons

Open Women Rockin’ Reds, Flying Herons

Juniorsurf Chairman’s ReportThe main objective of

the Junior division for the 2015-2016 season was for the children to have fun – whether from participating in training and club activities or by extending themselves and competing at carnivals. We wanted to ensure all the children felt part of one team and, most of all, enjoyed themselves at Red Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

For the committee, this objective meant we had to be balanced in all areas, giving each child a sense of personal achievement and a sense of club camaraderie. I believe we met this objective.

PARTICIPATION - Membership numbers at the closure of the season were almost a record with 368 Juniors (176 male, 192 female).

TRAINING PARTICIPATION - Training programmes were well set up, with great participation levels. A fantastic mid-week coaching programme was led by Kevin Cornish and Michael Smith over the summer and leading up to Northern Region Champs. With 76 athletes, Red Beach had its biggest-ever squad of kids train for and compete at Oceans ‘16. It was notable that there was a lot of enjoyment in training with great sized groups throughout the 2015/16 season.

200 METRE BADGE - A The ‘licence’ for our kids to use boards and a good guide to their swimming ability, mostly attained in the A8 group. The objective once again is participation at this level.

COMMUNICATION - This year the club committed to regular communication with its membership, with weekly

emails to parents and regular communication with managers by Junior Division secretary Sidah Russell, plus coaches’ communication to their groups. The continual emphasis is to encourage parents to actively participate with their children to achieve parent involvement at a higher level than other sports. I believe our sport is still well ahead of other sports in this area.

FINANCE - The committee’s objective to achieve a $15,000-$25,000 balance to carry forward to the 2016-17 season was achieved with membership subscriptions, sponsorships and fundraising events. The Treasurer’s report accurately covers this.

EQUIPMENT -This was the sixth season of our ‘Board Purchase and Lease Scheme’ in which families and the club are in a joint relationship for the upcoming season. Five families are currently in the ‘Board Purchase Scheme 2016-2017’ process. The scheme has been a success with 12 leased boards returning to the club this winter that have been out for three years. The condition of the returning boards is excellent.

With gear valued at approximately $2,250 per item and the large amount of equipment needed for a club of our size, we successfully maintained equipment, getting through the season with no gear shortages.

Club board usage is high and we currently have eight boards needing repair from the season, with a budget of $4,500 for repairs over winter.

We have 10 boards that are currently in need of repair or

replacement as a result of an accident where one of the Red Beach trailers detached on the motorway, causing major damage to C Group boards. Debra Cairns is currently handling our insurance claim regarding this incident.

Equipment is the biggest

issue for our club, but with the board scheme in place, club board maintenance has been kept to a reasonable level.

Note … the increase in population in our area is going to put pressure on both Red Beach and Orewa Surf Clubs and this is something we as a club need to be well prepared for from a gear and facilities perspective.

MANGAWHAI CAMP -Held in early-January, this has been one of the Junior Division’s greatest successes with a five-day camp culminating with the Survivor Competition in which 16 teams of five children aged between eight and 13 worked together to face challenges of survival. It was a week of camaraderie for all.

The camp at Mangawhai was a great experience, especially the training sessions where the group simply paddled across the estuary and around to the Mangawhai Bar side of the estuary. We had the entire beach to ourselves and, with waves reforming, the kids’ skills improved incredibly.

Many thanks to the committee and helpers (parents) for making this camp a great experience for the children and parents. A special thanks to Kevin for leading the coaching over on the dunes each day and to camp mother Anita Savage for a job well done.

NORTHERN REGION and NZ POOL CHAMPS - It was without doubt a great 2015/16 Pool Champs year with great representation by Red Beach at both Northern Region and NZ Pool Champs. Kirstine Rapson and Laura Quilter took mid-week trainings in our lead up with squads of 20s and 30s. The Red Beach team had all abilities and a ‘give it a go’ attitude. Again so many kids did well but, most importantly, all had fun.

NORTHERN REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS/ CATH & EDDIE MILLAR CUP - After seven consecutive wins and then a second place in 2015, Red Beach regained its Northern Region title this year. Success came as a result of a strong training lead up with 160 kids representing Red Beach and performing to best of their ability. Red Beach came in first, with Orewa second. Orewa, however, retained the Cath and Eddie Cup by one solitary point. A goal we can set for the 2016/17 season is to win this back.

OCEANS 16 – NATIONALS

- The competition began with beach flags on the first day – and Red Beach took its first gold of the comp. It is quite a spectacle to see the long snakes of young athletes in four different arenas.

We performed well despite some challenging conditions and finished in third place overall – a fantastic achievement. A special thanks goes out to Rob Harwood for keeping the boards repaired and available for the kids, and a big thanks to all who contributed to making this event such a

success – committee, parents, helpers, lifeguards and officials.

Congratulations to all the participants, medallists and place-getters – you had the whole of Red Beach Surf Club cheering you on and you made us very proud. To train, enter and compete in this event is something the kids will never forget.

Red Beach had its biggest-ever contingent entered this year, with 76 kids competing at Oceans ’16. Every child came away with a smile on his or her face and feeling proud to be part of such a large team. ¬Well done to you all.

SPECIAL THANKS - The key to our success is the help we receive from many people. The sharing of duties and support is spread wide, which makes our club unique.

Thank you Colleen Murphy

the ‘Club mum’ who organises our barbeque setup and also to Tegel for supporting our Sunday morning fundraising BBQ.

I would personally like to thank the Junior Division Committee members for their fantastic work: Kathy Kramer, Jan Saull, Kirsty Rutledge-Malyon, Sidah Russell, Mark Readman, Kevin Cornish, Richard Rogers, Rob Harwood, Jo Meban, Sam Goodare, Anita Savage and Sally Mellor.

All of their roles help in different ways and the success of our children is reflected by the work our committee puts in.

A special thanks goes

to Mark Readman who has stepped down from the Junior Division after 14 years of commitment, with four kids who have all gone through Juniors. Some of those children are now in Seniors and Mark will now be even more active on the Senior Committee. Mark has put so much time and effort into the club and we, the Junior Committee, wish him well.

This was also the last year for Sally Mellor on the Junior Committee. Sally has worked tirelessly for many years as the Junior Division secretary – so hard, in fact, that when she resigned from her position at the start of this season we divided her work across two roles.

I would also like to thank the committee members over the past years who have given the Junior Division great structure and support to make my role a lot easier. Special thanks go to Mark Scheib (previous Chairman) for his outstanding contribution to JuniorSurf, along with past committee members and helpers for assisting in creating what I believe is one of the best cultures of any club in the country. Our club brings fun and a strong sense of team and community and is a fantastic place to be a part of.

Well done on another amazing season, and we hope to see the Red Beach colours flying high again next season.

An emotional tribute was paid to Nick Saull by Red Beach club members and supporters when they gathered at Red Beach on Sunday 26 June 2016 to remember him. Club members formed a guard of honour along the beachfront, then assembled on the water in IRBs, surf boats, surf canoes and on

boards and skis. Balloons were released by the rowers and paddlers to honour him.

Obituary - Nick Saull 31 August 1968 – 13 June 2016

It is with profound sadness that we record the passing of Nick Saull, a club lifeguard who patrolled at both Red Beach and Pakiri for five years.

Nick (47) was tragically killed when struck by rigging while aboard the 20m yacht Platino which got into trouble in dangerous seas while heading for Fiji.

Nick first became involved with the club in 2009 when he helped coach the JuniorSurf B10 group for 10 year old youngsters. He continued coaching JuniorSurf groups for a total of four years.

In October 2011 Nick obtained his Surf Lifeguard Award and within 12 months obtained the Marine VHF Radio Operators Certificate and achieved his IRB Drivers qualification. In June 2015 he obtained the IRB Instructors Award and played a key role in training up club lifeguards for IRB crewman and driver awards.

One of his loves was surf canoe competition and he was part of a regular canoe crew from the moment he became a lifeguard. For five summers he was devoted to the sport, travelling with his family and the club’s surf canoe fraternity to compete at surf carnival venues throughout the North Island. He was also a regular starter in Masters surf races.

Nick and his wife Jan, the secretary for the SeniorSurf committee, struck up many friendships within the club, becoming involved with working bees and fundraising.

And as the head of Brin Wilson Boat Builders he was a saviour to the club when it came to repairing damaged surf canoes.

Nick was a giant of a man who was deeply devoted to his family as well as to the surf lifesaving movement. The club extends its heartfelt condolences to Jan, Stacey, Brodie, Toni and Carter.

RIP, Nick Saull. You will be greatly missed by everyone in the Red Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

Squash Report - 2015/20162015-2016 was a good

year for the squash division. Membership has increased, mostly as a result of the club picking up about 20 members from the closure of the Leisure Centre Squash Courts in Stanmore Bay. The participation of the committee has also increased, with a new treasurer (Madeline Luke) and a tournament sub-committee (Matt Pepper, Chris Harre and Oli Marshall) joining existing captain, Blair Ashton, secretary Yvonne Dey and chairman Aaron Webb. This has meant more hands to cover the workload.

The Club Champs last year resulted in Sam Godfrey continuing her dominance of the Women’s Division, winning another club title, and Matt Pepper winning the Men’s title.

This year, the club has hosted two successful

tournaments - the traditional and well attended Summer B Grade in February, and a Masters tournament in March. In June we hosted our annual Junior 1-day tournament, and all three tournaments have been well attended. The division competes mostly in Masters divisions across Auckland, while our top juniors play in the junior interclub. One concerning factor is the number of competitive adults below 40 has dropped to a point that we have no senior interclub teams, meaning that we have combined players with Silverdale Squash in that form of interclub.

The Junior Division has employed Jarrod Van Driel as a Junior coach. Jarrod has a coaching business and has run a successful Term 2 coaching programme on Monday nights that will continue on into Term 3. This

has also been well attended and has resulted in several more junior players joining the club.

The club continues to maintain a strong link to schools in the district. Orewa College have 50 players competing in the Auckland Secondary Schools competition, of which the Red Beach courts are “home”. Recently, Wentworth College have also started using the courts and Whangaparaoa College are also looking for a “home” for their squash programme. We are currently in negotiation to find court space with them.

This interest from the schools augurs well for the future of the sport and the club.
