RED CROSS PINK DAY 2018The Canadian Red Cross believes that every child should be treated with respect. We invite your school to join us for Pink Day 2018 and help raise awareness about the impact of bullying by wearing pink on both Feb. 28 and April 11 throughout Manitoba and Nunavut. We are excited that you and your students are joining the growing Pink Day movement along with hundreds of other schools.

HOW DID IT GET STARTED?Pink Day began in 2007 when two high school students in Nova Scotia took a stand against bullying in their school. The students asked all of their peers to wear pink to school after a male classmate had been bullied for wearing a pink shirt. That initial action led to a worldwide movement. The Red Cross Pink Day campaign brings together schools and organizations in communities throughout Manitoba and Nunavut to wear the shirt and stand together against bullying.

HOW IS THE RED CROSS INVOLVED IN BULLYING PREVENTION?For over 35 years, the Canadian Red Cross has worked closely with schools and communities to create safer environments for all youth. Education is the key to the prevention of bullying behaviour. Red Cross programs teach youth and adults how to recognize, respond to, and prevent bullying situations using a unique peer-to-peer training model. Last year alone, more than 85,000 individuals participated in Red Cross violence, bullying and abuse prevention education in Manitoba and Nunavut.

A WHOLE-SCHOOL APPROACH TO BULLYING EDUCATIONThe Canadian Red Cross bullying prevention program, Beyond the Hurt, supports a whole-school approach to promoting respectful relationships. We focus on providing high-quality learning resources and supportive training to equip school staff to deliver bullying prevention information in their classrooms, as well as empowering students to educate their peers on bullying and the power of bystanders to create a positive school climate.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL PINK DAY CELEBRATION

1. Start planning early in order to include students, staff and community partners in the process of preparing for the celebration. This is a great opportunity for youth facilitators to get involved with planning and to present to their peers.

2. Use whole-school initiatives to engage students, staff, parents and community partners in creating a positive school climate and use classroom activities to allow students to have the opportunity to discuss the topics in more depth. Smaller class sizes produce better discussion and make it easier and more comfortable to share and ask questions.

3. Use various activities, role-playing, videos and a range of teaching approaches to help maintain interest and more effectively reach students, staff and parents with bullying prevention information and strategies.

4. Present information authentically, realistically and bluntly. Students appreciate being given the full picture and want information that more than merely skims over difficult topics.

5. Consider cultural and ethnic diversity to ensure students are included. It is important to remember that differences in language, background, beliefs, knowledge and experience all impact how information is understood and integrated.

6. Use gender-neutral language to provide an inclusive environment for sexual minority students. It is important to recognize that sexual minority students are very vulnerable to bullying and harassment. Pink Day is an opportunity to support a positive and safe school environment for sexual minority students.

7. Bullying prevention programming is not a one-time event. Ideally, it is integrated into other facets of learning. The Canadian Red Cross Violence, Abuse and Bullying Prevention program can support your school in integrating material throughout the year through our bullying prevention program, Beyond the Hurt. Contact us for more information.

8. To support students, comprehensive bullying prevention needs to reach every student and adult in the school, and beyond the school to parents and the broader community.

9. Have fun!

PINK DAY FILM FESTIVAL 2018

The Canadian Red Cross will host its fourth annual Pink Day Film Festival on Feb. 28 2018. The festival will showcase as many student-made videos made by students from across Manitoba and Nunavut.

This year’s festival will again focus on creating bullying prevention videos that are 30 to 60 seconds in length and are similar to public service ads. Also, the videos will feature this year’s theme of #BeSomeonesHero, which can include highlighting individuals and groups in schools and communities that make a positive difference by promoting respect, kindness and bullying prevention.

Details on how to create and submit videos are on the following page.

The Canadian Red Cross looks forward to celebrating the incredible video creations of student filmmakers throughout Manitoba and Nunavut. As part of that celebration, the Red Cross wants schools to join us for the live Film Festival on Feb. 28, either in-person in Winnipeg or via the Internet.

If your school wants to take part either by coming to the Film Festival or by being one of the schools that participates through live webstreaming, there is information below on how to join the celebration.

DETAILS FOR CREATING AND SUBMITTING VIDEOS

1. Any student, kindergarten to Grade 12, from any school in Manitoba and Nunavut, can participate.

2. Start by putting together a team. Then, create a script of 30 to 60 seconds in length. Make sure it is visually captivating at the beginning, as many videos online are first watched without sound. This way, it will get people’s attention.

3. The video must follow one of three themes: a) How could you promote the qualities of a healthy peer relationship – respect, trust, safety, communication? b) How do we celebrate diversity and let others know that we have to learn to interact with all different types of people to build safe and inclusive schools and communities? c) Interview an everyday hero in your school or community.

4. Submission deadline: Feb. 14, 2018.

5. Complete a submission form and signed information release forms for each individual pictured in the video ad (a copy of each form is attached) and email the completed paperwork to: [email protected]

6. After submitting your forms, details will be sent on how to send your video to the Red Cross.

7. Remember you cannot use any copyrighted music, as the Red Cross will be posting these videos on YouTube. YouTube does not permit the use of copyrighted music, this includes popular songs, and will take these videos down.

8. After the videos are posted to YouTube, we will encourage people to watch all of them.

9. All students involved in creating videos will receive a certificate of recognition.

PINK DAY 2018 FUNDRAISING IDEAS

Get creative! Use some of the ideas included below or come up with your own ideas to raise money to contribute to the cost of your schools Pink Day shirts or donate to Respect Education Bullying Prevention in Manitoba and Nunavut.

Step 1: Set a fundraising goal to reach for and then plan your events.

Step 2: Invite students, teachers, parents and community members to your fundraising events. Use posters and newsletters to share the details.

Step 3: Celebrate your success. Let your school, community and Red Cross know how your event(s) went, and share pictures. You can invite your local media to your school to share your story.

• Pink Bake Sale Pink frosted cupcakes, brownies, cookies and pink lemonade could be big sellers!

• Pink Day Craft Sale Have students in the school create pink jewelry, accessories, crafts and other items of their choice.

• Wall of Pink Imagine what all the individual commitments to standing up to bullying would look like if you could see them in your school. Make paper T-shirts on pink paper and sell them for $2 (or another value) to students, teachers, and visitors to your school. Put the shirts in a prominent place so everyone can see your school’s Wall of Pink.

• Art Show and Sale Have the students create a picture that represents kindness, respect, caring and friendship. Allow them to express their feelings through art, or create a poster. Display the completed art in the hallways of the school for all to see. Send home a letter explaining to parents that students are having an art show and sale, and invite the families and community agencies to attend the show and purchase art. Have students volunteer to sit at the table and sell the art.

When students, staff or parents support your school, thank them for supporting Canadian Red Cross Pink Day and bullying prevention education in Manitoba and Nunavut.

We look forward to hearing how your school participates in Pink Day 2018!
