Newsletter

March 2020

Blessing and Greeting to each of you,

I have been pondering what to write for a couple of weeks. So many

thoughts have gone through my head and I keep coming back to the

song “Count Your Blessings”. As we go through this Lenten season

and prepare for Easter, it seems to be a time to review our lives, our

spiritual well-being and to count our blessings.

We are blessed to have so many wonderful women in the Red River

District UMW. I want to thank the St. Bethlehem UMW for hosting

our Officer’s Update and Training day. We had 66 ladies register,

representing 16 units. We mailed packets with 2020 Handbooks to

those not in attendance. A few were returned and we will try to get

them to you.

Our next event will be the Spiritual Day Apart at Mt. Carmel UMC

on March 21. I hope you are planning to attend. The District Mis-

sion u will be April 25 at Dickson UMC. The District Intergenera-

tional Meeting will be held at Clark Memorial UMC August 22 and

will be a fashion show – please consider participating as a runway

model with your daughter, granddaughter, or your best friend. We

will be having mission collections at our events this year. Please

watch for upcoming information.

Please continue to be in prayer for all those affected by the recent

tornados. Dixon Memorial UMC, in the Red River District, has set

up as a Community Aide site. We thank them for their efforts.

Please let us know if your unit is having any events or if you have

ideas that would be helpful to other units.

I hope to see you soon.

In Christian Love,

Terry Guertin, RR District UMW President

Spiritual Day Apart

Saturday, March 21, 2020

9 a.m. to noon

We are anticipating an exceptional morning at Mt. Carmel UMC, Clarksville, for a Spiritual

Day Apart. Rev. Dr. Phoebe Jowers, minister of Mt. Zion UMC in Cunningham will be with

us once again and continue giving us ideas on creating and following a spiritual growth plan.

Pastor Phoebe will also set up “sacred space stations” as she did last year at New Johnsonville

UMC; these stations provide meaningful opportunities for prayer and personal reflection. We

will conclude the morning with worship and Holy Communion.

From 9 to 9:45 the ladies of Mt. Carmel will host a brunch and fellowship time; a $5 donation

to their unit is asked for the brunch. The meeting will begin following brunch.

Rather than collecting an offering during the morning, units are urged to donate new or

gently used stuffed purses and/or backpacks to be used as welcome gifts at SafePlace

Transitional Family Home in Clarksville. The purses can be stuffed with anything that

women enjoy—nothing expensive—body spray, chap stick, lotion, tissues, and perhaps a

handwritten note of love and encouragement. Backpacks for any age child can be stuffed

with anything appropriate for the age you choose, whether pre-school or school age.

Come to Mt. Carmel on March 21 with the expectation of going home revitalized for spiritual

growth!

Women United for Change: 150 Years in Mission presented by Aquilla Lillard Grace, Grit, and Gratitude - learning from the past - 2020 is the big celebration of United

Methodist Women 150 years which will be. Women have struggled but persevered over

the years in all areas. Seeing the need locally and around the world – we still have issues

today that need to be addressed. Women, children, as well as men throughout our coun-

try and the world have needs to be expanded. Think back to the days of your youth, your

mother, your grandmother, etc. Those hurdles were approached, tested, and are still on-

going. Where do you and others fit into this story?

Practicing Resurrection –The Gospel of Mark and Radical

Discipleship - presented by Margaret Fisher.

I highly recommend reading this book – it is very powerful and has much to say about our

past but also as well to the future of the world. The author explores the timeless issues of

poverty, gender, justice, liberation, equality and others using the stories of women in Mark

(thought to have been written almost forty years after the crucifixion). Christians were then

asking, what does it mean to be a disciple of this Jesus, crucified and raised? Just as to-

day.

Both ladies are well qualified to lead the studies. Both are on state, conference,

and national levels of UMW. Encouraging all ladies to attend these studies

Tornado Response 2020

Tornado Response https://www.tnumc.org/ Information from the TNUMW Office:

Robert Craig, Disaster Response Coordinator for the Nashville Episcopal Area is assessing damage this week to determine what projects can be tackled now and in the coming weeks. Ken Hunter, the Caney Fork River District’s disaster relief coordinator, quickly mobilized Early Response Teams (ERT) from St. Marks, Murfreesboro First, and Cookeville UMCs to get much-needed equipment to affected sites in Putnam County. The overnight tornado that hit Tennessee earlier this week left significant damage within several TNUMC districts. United Methodist churches whose buildings were the hardest hit are Dodson Chapel UMC, Braden Memorial UMC, and East End UMC. All have insurance policies to cover the physical damage. Shipments of hygiene kits and tornado buckets already are on the way to our area from the UMCOR Warehouse. We will need to replenish these supplies at a later date. If your church wants to put kits together – and has a place to store them – Hygiene Kits and Tornado Buckets will be needed in the weeks ahead. Teams and individuals who would like to volunteer can let us know by completing the Tennessee Tornado Disaster Response Volunteers form. A pastor at one of our churches set up this data-base so volunteers can be matched with appropriate projects. When sites are secure, trained ERTs will be invited into the affected areas by Robert Craig. Several have already offered support. Volunteers without UMCOR Emergency Response training will then be assigned to on-site work projects. In the meantime, continued prayer, financial donations and food for first responders are appreciated. GIVE TO TN TORNADO 2020 (Tennessee Conference Disaster Response with Credit Card or PayPal) OR

Checks may be sent to: TNUMC Disaster Response, 304 S. Perimeter Park Drive, Suite 1, Nashville, TN

37211

GIVE THROUGH UMCOR (United States Disaster Response and Recovery through Advance #901670)

OR follow the Red River District TN Annual Conference on Facebook to see what help you might provide.

There is info from the Conference Office, including a link to the Response Volunteer form.

At this time, units and churches are also asked to put together TORNADO BUCKETS and HYGIENE KITS.
