5th Grade Votes for President!

The 5th grade library classes spent

weeks researching the presidential candidates' posi-

tions on five major issues (jobs & economy, taxes,

healthcare, education, and defense), learning about

the election process, and campaigning for their can-

didate of choice through the creation of campaign

posters. Some classes were also able to complete

writing pieces on what they would do if they were

president.

The librarian, Miss Rhodes, was able to secure the

loan of a real voting machine so students could get a

true feel of the election process. Thank you to Mr.

Kline for setting up the voting ma-

chine for the 5th grade library clas-

ses, helping the students with the

voting process, and tabulating our

mock election results for us! Mr.

Romney won the 5th grade mock

election by a few votes.

What’s Happening in Science?

Mrs. Deb Lee’s sophomore class have been performing

labs as part of their study on cellular respiration. The

students have been testing different sugar samples to

see how much gas the yeast produces.

Attention Seniors and Parents of Seniors

Mrs. Clark spoke to each senior on an indi-vidual basis and spoke to the seniors in their English classes last week regarding college/career planning. Seniors are aware that Mrs.

Clark would like all college application mate-rials submitted before students go on winter break. We will have close to 2 weeks off for

winter break this year and deadlines must be met! Please contact Mrs. Clark at 359-1108

with any questions or concerns.

It’s Winter Concert Time! The Tuscarora Elementary/MS will present their Instrumental Con-cert on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at 7:00 PM in the high school auditorium. Please note – The district calendar has our con-cert listed as being on the 12th and the 17th. The concert is indeed on the 12th, and the 17th was a misprint. The Beginning Band, 5th Grade Band, 6th Grade Band, and Jazz Band will perform for a night of holiday celebration! All band members should report to the stage at the high school at 6:30 PM to warm up and tune their instruments before the con-cert. Please remember to bring your instru-ment and your music home with you on Mon-day! Don’t forget that attendance and perfor-mance at the concert is mandatory!* **This year the Tuscarora Bands will be collecting mittens, hats, scarves, etc., to donate to the Addison Community Food and Toy Committee. School Year 2012-2013 Issue 13 Page 3 of 3 November 23, 2012

The painting I chose was “The Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh. The painting was painted in 1889, in oil on canvas. The three elements I changed were color, texture, and focal point. For color, I made my painting in hues of pink, purple and yellow. But in the original the colors were blue, yellow and green. My version of “The Starry Night” is a lot brighter and happier. For texture, I changed the painting by making it look smoother and not so rough. In the original the sky and the hills looked sketchy but in mine they look smooth and flowing. I changed the focal point by moving the grass on the painting from the left side to the right side and I re-moved the town so now you focus on the brightly colored grass on the right side. I think my painting is successful because many people said my version of “The Starry Night” was better than the original and I really, really like it. I’m very happy with how it turned out and I enjoyed doing this project.

The students in Mrs. DuBois’ Studio in Art class recently completed a project where they were asked to se-lect a famous painting and identify three elements and/or principles of design that they would change while com-pleting their own version of the work. They were then asked to write an essay comparing their version to the orig-inal.

Charla Sommer, a freshman in the class, created a beautiful version of “The Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh. Below is a photograph of Charla’s version of the famous painting, along with the essay she wrote.

Addison Area Christmas Food Baskets Once again this year, volunteers from our community will be working together during the Christmas season to organize food baskets for local families and individuals in need. Last year we served 160 families. Much of this endeavor is supported by the donations of food and volunteer time, but monetary support is needed to make this a viable project. The food baskets provide a complete meal at Christmas time. Each basket usually includes, milk, eggs, butter, cheese, bread, potatoes, a turkey or ham, and other items to complete a nice meal. Other non-perishable goods such as pasta, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, jelly, soup, canned fruit, vegetables, and cereal are also included. Many of the non-perishable goods are donated through local food drives. Community members, churches, organizations, and volunteers also donate other signifi cant items such as boxes, storage, and space for the event. While many of the food items, time and other expenses are donated the perishable items are purchased. We also purchase most of the non-perishable items needed to complete each basket in order to be able to serve all those who depend on this effort. We hope you will consider supporting this annual community event by contributing to local canned food drives, volunteering or through a monetary donation. Any and all contributions are always greatly appreciated. Please send monetary donations to:Addison Area Christmas Food BasketsC/O Addison Council of Churches47 Maple Street, #101Addison, NY 14801Please make checks payable to Addison Area Christmas Food Baskets. Thank you.

Corning, New York Social Security Office to Close to the Public a

Half Hour Early Each Day and at Noon on Wednesdays

Effective November 19, 2012, the Corning, NY Social Security office will be open to the public Mon-day through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. – a reduction of 30 minutes each weekday. In addition, beginning January 2, 2013, the office will close to the public at noon every Wednesday. While agency employees will continue to work their regular hours, this shorter public window will allow them to complete face-to-face interviews and process claims work without incurring the cost of overtime. The significantly reduced funding provided by Congress under the continuing resolution for the first six months of the fiscal year makes it impossible for the agency to provide the overtime needed to handle service to the public as it has done in the past. In addition, on November 23, the day after Thanks-giving, all Social Security field offices will be closed to the public. As we did last year, employees working that day will focus on reducing backlogged workloads. Most Social Security services do not require a visit to a local office. Many services, including applying for retirement, disability or Medicare benefits, signing up for direct deposit, replacing a Medicare card, obtaining a proof of income letter or informing us of a change of address or telephone number are conveniently available at www.socialsecurity.gov or by dialing our toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call our TTY number, 1-800-325-0778. Many of our online services also are available in Spanish at www.segurosocial.gov.

ChurchSubmitted by Sharon

Calkins(11/18/12) 1 Thessalo-nians 5:12-24: What is a standing order? It is an order on a continual basis, not having to be ordered over and over again. Our Bible con-tains standing orders. Verse 16 tells us to be joyful always, verse 17 says pray continually, verse 18 says to give thanks in all circum-stances, for this is the will of God. We are to do these things always, not only when we feel like it. We don’t always obey these orders, so pray to God and ask Him to help you starting now. We were all giv-en the micro phone to tell what we are thank-ful for. A partial l ist is, grandchildren, our Pastor, health, friends, spouses, jobs, Gods promises and bless-ings, the Bible, music, Amer ica , and many more. God never lets us down and we get answers in His time, not ours. Some complain that Church worship is repetitious, but we learn by repetition. We

pray the Lord’s Prayer each week, not repeat it from habit. We need to give thanks, be joyful always, and be thankful to all in all circumstances. This is a great time to start obeying orders because this is Thanksgiving week. Our services are at 9:30 in the Baptist Church and we welcome you to worship with us Sunday morning.

Do not judge others, and God will not judge you; do not condemn others, and God will not condemn you; forgive others, and God will forgive you (Luke 6:37). There are many verses in the Bible like this one that tell us that we should forgive those who have offended or insulted us in one way or another. Often, relationships between families and friends have been destroyed because of the hardening of the heart and the refusal to forgive others for something that they may have said or done. Because we are close to our loved ones, we may feel that we can say things to them that we would never say to others. Although the spirit of forgiveness is not always easy, forgiveness is usually more important to those who have been offended than to those who have caused the offense. Quite often, a person may not even realize that they have said or done something that disturbs us, and frequently a person’s words or actions may simply be misinterpreted. Forgiving others as God forgives us is necessary in order to live our lives as our Heavenly Father requires.Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any Man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. K.J.V. Colossians 3:13.
