OBITUARY:
Rest in Peace, Steve Beretsel.
Our three-rail friend from DuBois
succumbed after years of dialysis. Steve did not
make more than a few meetings, but he kept in
touch with several of us. His work was im-
maculate, with a large finished layout on the
first floor of his home. Everything he did al-
ways looked finished, right from the start. At-
tention to setting, surrounding, smoothness of
scene, delight with detail, and finished carpen-
try made his layout look ready for a magazine.
Steve had volunteered to help Ray at the Jam-
boree, which was our last communication.
Keep those rails polished, Steve.
Another great job of fun at the Jamboree.
Thanks to a lot of really good help. It went off
pretty smoothly ! With nearly 800 people in a 6
hour Span, it was busy all day long. And members
of the Division 11 can be proud of themselves for
doing such a GREAT job!
I am not going to list individuals for two rea-
sons: 1. I'd forget someone and 2. how can you pull
anyone individual out? When it took all of you to
make a success. All the layouts ran smooth and
looked good.
I would like to thank Paul, because this was all
planned under his watch. Thanks for the last 4
years. And making it an easy transition for me into
the Super’s job.
I want to thank everyone who helped to make
this a successful Jamboree. I also want to thanks the
dealers and all the manufactures for their donation
to Honest Amos. THANKS GUYS! Another well
run Jamboree.
Just a final note! If you haven't gotten on the
Division 11 web site?...Well, you should. I know,
I was one of the worst for going on websites, but
there is a lot of great information and pictures.
Check it out:
WWW.div11-mcr-nmra.info It is well worth your time. ROLLY
We Came, We Showed, We Succeeded Jamboree12 By boB McKay Now that everyone has fully recovered from our success-
ful Jamboree and Train Show at the DuBois Mall, it is time
to start a smear campaign. I mean, a sincere stab at smear-
ing smiles of gratitude, appreciation, and stellar achieve-
ment. My first victim shall be lauded for bravery, creativ-
ity, and timeliness focused on our greed. Who else could
that be but our stellar Honest Amos. He asked for it, got it
in spades, sold it to droolers and duffers alike, and got it all
into the right clammy hands. We shall all enjoy his success
at the Hoss’ tree!
Then there was El Presidente, Der Superintendent, an
unabashed modeler of Penn Central, no less. He was here,
he was there, and touted his leadership skills as all things to
all men. OK, some women and children too. Rolly did our
NMRA promotion. Also effective was Dual Core, Sweet
Ole Bob, Santa’s thin cousin, who got the trains running on
time, before displaying pedagogical skills for neophyte
ferroequinologists. We gratefully note his countless hours
of exasperation to keep up the division layout.
The small fry loved the trains on the floor. Thanks Jeff!
Your equipment surely has kid magnets. We have dozens
of really cute pictures of wide-eyed rug rats ogling Garden
Gauge. And the adults got up a head of steam for John
Pletcher’s G live steam, diesels, and gorgeous laser work.
Thanks.
Our new second unit pulled his weight by touching the
third rail of modeling. With his predecessor Galon at his
side, Harry handed out literature, sold door prizes, ran trains
with grandson Zac, and helped welcome the hordes. Lots of
horns and bells, with NO collisions. Nearby was silent
smiling Ray with his handy dandy thumb counter, clicking
away as almost 765 viewers entered our area and soaked up
our skills. The vendors were pleased with the number and
interest of the Saturday shoppers.
Neither Hyde nor hair kept our lifelong N scaler from
displaying his modules again. There was much interest and
a lot to learn from his displays. And he will “soon” have
his own home layout to operate. Jerry Bowersox helped
Paul Kurutz with a very successful White Elephant table.
Almost everything sold, and much of it belonged to the di-
vision. Love that profit percentage 100%. It was good to
see Bob Cross, Paul Hense, Nick Snyder and son, Josh and
Dave Rosenberg, and lots of friends there. Rob Swauger
and Denny Lewellen had tables in the hall. Gary Fischel
had the point table, flanked by Bob Morrison, Mike Zol-
litsch, Bill McKinney, Dom Colucci and Lee Gettel.
How else could I end this butt without honorable men-
tion to BTF. Our tree maker settled in for the duration with
something to do, alongside resident artist Paul “paint the
plaster” Kurutz, and our top car man, Chris Lasher, who
supervised the production of a slew of Blue Boxes in the
hands of elves. Now that the Styrofoam and plaster cloth
are out of the Lasher basement, more rewarding pursuits
can follow. The modules are back in the trailer, the tables
are back at church, and all of us got a good tucker and bad
back, but we came together with a good plan, we showed
our stuff to John Q. Public, and we turned a healthy profit
for the division. Well Done one again, Division 11. boB

Wood Chemical Factories – An Addendum
A couple months ago I belched out an article on wood
chemical factories, in which I mentioned the iron racks
used to move cord wood into and through the retorts
and cooling chambers. Just last night I found a catalog
of the Koppel Industrial Car & Equipment Co. from
which I snipped the illustration below.
Note that the 4' 5” inside width makes it possible to
drop in 4' lengths of wood without a lot of messing
around. Such a car would hold about 1 ½ cords of wood.
Depending on the length of the retorts, four or more
such cars would make a load. After passing through the
retorts and cooling chambers, these cars would be
moved to either the loading dock, where the charcoal
would be loaded into box cars, or to the crushing plant
for further processing.
After whatever maintenance might be needed
(remember, these things got red hot in the retort) it
would be back to the wood yard for another load. SOB
Cheap Model Railroad Products, the mercantile division of The
322 Group, announces a special limited offer of Plaster Impreg-
nated Gauze, suitable for model railroad scenery construction.
Through a special purchase, unlikely to be repeated, Cheap MR
Products is able to offer this gauze to Division 11 members at
$3.00 for 10 square feet. That is half or less of the retail price.
Look for this label !
Send e-mail to [email protected] stating your
requirements so that the rolls of dirt-cheap plaster cloth can be
brought to the next meeting where you will be able to exchange
US currency ($3.00 per roll) for the cheapest plaster cloth on the
continent.
Web Site Renewal: From the Webmaster:
As you may recall, the Division set up its new web site
in August of 2011. The contract with GoDaddy is for one
year and expires in August 2012. I'd like to renew, and
would like a resolution to pay up to $60 for one year or up
to $120 for two years. Note that the amounts requested
cover both the use of the div11-mcr-nmra.info URL and
the disk space. If we were to let the URL lapse, there is a
substantial fee for getting it back.
I've been getting so many e-mails from GoDaddy offer-
ing 18% off this and 25% off if I act before tomorrow and
on and on that I don't really know what it's going to cost
when it gets down to actually doing the deed. I think the
amounts I've mentioned will be adequate. Since the July
meeting will be kind of fast and loose, and the August
meeting too late, I'm asking for action at the June meeting.
Other news: When we left the Verizon site, I left behind a redirection
page which shunted people trying to access
mysite.veriozn.net/keystonecorridor to the new site. A few
weeks ago, I noticed that Verizon had apparently shut off
access to that page. A couple days later, I wondered “How
many of the other sites (National, Region, other Divisions)
still point to the old URL?”
I found that of the 10 other Divisions in the MCR, four
(2, 4, 6, and 7) don't have links to other Divisions. Of the
remaining six, 3 were pointing to the old site, 3 to the
new. In addition, the National still had the old URL,
while the MCR had the new URL. I e-mailed the several
webmasters pointing out the stale URL and asking for an
update.
Division 3 changed theirs within 3 hours (and thanked
me for the news), the National within 2 days, Division 1
several days later. Division 10 still has the old URL (as of
May 20). So: attaboys to Div. 3 and the National, thanks to
Div.1, boo hiss to Div. 10.
New rail line

STB approval of rail line makes history Written by Luther S. Miller, Senior Consulting Editor
http://www.railwayage.com/media/k2/items/cache/cea8f3a5c1f96601aa4a4b96916566da_XL.jpg
The Surface Transportation Board on Monday granted final ap-
proval for what it called "a first of its kind" rail line. It gave R.J.
Corman Railroad Co./Pennsylvania Lines Inc. (RJCP) authority "to
build and operate a new rail line using right-of-way previously rail-
banked as well as new right-of-way, near Wallaceton, Pa.
''This is the first instance in which the Board examined a new rail
line construction proposal combined with restoration of rail service
over a rail-banked right-of-way,'" said the board. "The entire rail
line would provide rail service to a proposed new waste-to-ethanol
facility, a quarry, an industrial park now under development near
Gorton, Pa., and to other shippers along the line."
Advocates for both freight and passenger rail frequently complain
that rail-banked rights-of-way are too quickly or too often turned
over to exclusive non-rail uses, including conversion to hiking or
recreational trails.
RJCP operates in the Pennsylvania coal fields east of Pittsburgh
and northwest of State College, Pa., spanning six counties. RJCP
interchanges with Norfolk Southern.

going on the OCTRR steam ride on Juy15.
Paul presented how many tickets he reserved. Then they
authorized Fr boB to call and get a exact price and order
and pay for the tickets out of Div 11 Group funds. People
getting tickets will reimburse the club.
