2012-13 Redhawk Women’s basketball

head coach joan bonviciniFOURTH season/southern connecticut state ‘75

Joan Bonvicini, one of the most successful coaches in women’s collegiate basketball history and for-

mer coach at the University of Arizona and Long Beach State, was named head coach of the Seattle

University women’s basketball team on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009.

Bonvicini is currently leading the Redhawks in their first season with full Division I status and their first

season in the Western Athletic Conference. The veteran head coach is in her fourth season at Seattle

University behind an all-time 661-361 (.647) record and is 11th on the NCAA Division I all-time wins

list for women’s college basketball. She became the 18th coach in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history to reach the 600-win

mark in February 2007. The Redhawk head coach also boasts 21 20-win seasons over her historic coaching career.

Bonvicini led the Redhawks to one the most successful seasons in program history during the 2011-12 season, notching their first 20-

win season as an NCAA Division I program, as well as leading them to their first NCAA Division I postseason appearance in school

history. Seattle U made it to the semifinals of the Women’s Basketball Invitational before falling to the University of Northern Iowa,

68-64.

Prior to joining Seattle U, she coached 13 All-Americans and two former US Olympic Team members. While at Arizona, 54 student-

athletes earned Pacific-10 accolades and 21 earned conference academic honors. At Arizona, Bonvicini accumulated a 287-223

(.563) record over 17 seasons. She led the Wildcats to nine postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Tournament berths and

the WNIT Championship in 1996. She was head coach at Arizona from 1991 to 2008.

Bonvicini is in five halls of fame: the Southern Connecticut State Hall of Fame (1989), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of

Fame (1994), the Long Beach State Athletic Hall of Fame (1996), the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame (2005), and the New Eng-

land Basketball Hall of Fame (2007).

She started her head coaching career at Long Beach State in 1979, posting a 325-71 record (.821) in her 12 seasons with the

49ers. Long Beach State won 24 games or more every season with Bonvicini at the helm. The 49ers earned ten conference champi-

onships and ten straight berths in the NCAA Tournament, including Final Four appearances in 1987 and 1988. With the 49ers, she

was named the 1981 NCAA Division I Coach of the Year. Following the 1985-86 season she was named the Region VIII and PCAA

Coach of the Year. In 1984, she was named WCAA Coach of the Year and has also been honored by the city of Long Beach as their

1989 “Citizen of the Year”. The East Coast native spent two seasons as an assistant at Long Beach State before being promoted to

head coach at age 25. Prior to joining the 49ers, she began her coaching career as an assistant at Cal Poly - Pomona in Southern

California.

A guard during her playing days, Bonvicini helped Southern Connecticut State earn third-and fourth-place finishes in the AIAW

Championships. In 1975, she was named Region I-A MVP and an honorable mention All-American. She was a finalist for the 1976

U.S. Olympic Basketball Team.

the field. Sowell shot 8-for-13 from the field and recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Louisiana Tech (2/14): Despite an ini-tial 6-0 run by Louisiana Tech (11-13, 7-6 WAC), contributions by Kacie Sow-ell, Ashley Ward and Maggie McCarthy over the next two minutes tied the game at eight at 16:24. These first three and a half minutes would prove to be the only lead of the contest for the Lady Tech-sters. The Redhawks then went on a 10-2 run over the next three minutes following back-to-back fast break layups by Syl-via Shephard and Daidra Brown to lead, 18-10, at 13:15. Ward hit a layup and a jumper following the 13 minute mark to give Seattle U their first double digit lead, 22-12, at 12:23. A fastbreak la-yup by Brown extended the lead to 12, 24-12, at 12:10 followed by nearly two scoreless minutes for either team. On a 10-1 run, a layup by Jelena Bucinic put the Lady Techsters within three, 25-22, at 8:19, but SU re-extended their lead to as many as eight, 39-31, at 2:14 fol-lowing a layup by Shephard. Renee Dil-lard-Brown added a pair of free-throws and the teams traded baskets as the Redhawks held on to a six-point lead, 43-37, at the half. A layup by Shephard coming out of the half put the Redhawks up again by eight, 45-37, but LA Tech then went on an 11-4 run to trail by just one, 49-48, at 14:22. Whitney Frazier scored six points on the run. Sowell add-ed a pair of free throws and Seattle U led again by as many as seven four dif-ferent times over the next five minutes. Shephard hit a three-pointer at 7:17 to give the Redhawks another double digit lead, 67-57. On a three-point play at 5:59, Sowell made a layup and the fol-lowing free throw to put Seattle U up again by double digits, and the Red-hawks would keep a lead of 10+ for the remainder of the contest. Behind solid free-throw shooting, with SU’s final 15 points coming from free-throws, the

2012-13 Redhawk Women’s basketball

Redhawks pulled away and got the win, 87-74, on the road. Sowell led all play-ers with a career-high 26 points and four other Redhawks scored in double figures.
