Our City, Our Money Bristol Pound

As one of the largest trading system in Europe, the Bristol Pound is the UK’s first city wide local currency and also the first to have electronic accounts managed by a regulated financial institution. It is also the first local currency that can be used to pay some local taxes. The aim of the Bristol Pound is to support independent businesses in and around Bristol, strengthen the local economy, keep our high streets diverse and distinct, and help build stronger communities.

Bristol Pound is a voluntary system and an alternative currency designed to work alongside sterling and not to replace it. It can be purchased for sterling with £B1 equal in value to £1 sterling and can be spent with business members in the region. There will be £B1, £B5, £B10 and £20 available to the market.

In fact, there are several cities in United Kingdom which have successfully launched their own money. The Totnes Pound was launched in 2006 at Devon with more than 70 traders support and involved, Stroud in Gloucestershire print its own money in 2009, with more than 60 firms are using the local currency. The Brixton Pound was launched at Brixton in 2009 and has 200 members involved. With a similar trading system with these cities, Bristol Pound provides a new and unique feature to its trading system – online account, user and business owners can use and manage their Bristol Pound in a more convenient and electronic way, there are more than 200 traders who have joined the Bristol Pound system to support our local business and our own money.

Bristol’s own currency should reflect the values and the lives of people who live here. - Adele Graham, Bristol Pound

The Perfect Fit

This exciting new retail business has been launched by friends Jo & Sarah, to offer good quality footwear at an affordable price and a local alternative to the shopping mall experience.

With three children each, they were both aware of the need for a new children’s shoe shop in Bristol. Having found premises in their ideal location on Gloucester Road opposite Bristol School of Gymnastics, Jo and Sarah set about sourcing their gorgeous and distinctive brands. The spacious interior was designed and crafted by Jo’s husband Leon, creating a perfect backdrop to showcase the variety of shoes on offer. With comfortable seating, wooden toys and room to accommodate pushchairs, the open-plan space is ideal for parents to browse while their children play.

The shop caters for all ages and sizes from pre-walkers through to teenagers. Brands include Camper, Bisgaard, Bobux, Superfit, Garvelin, Superga, Keds, Petasil, Ricosta, Birkenstock and Ipanema. So whether you are looking for fashion footwear or something sensible for school, the friendly staff at Oddsox will help find the perfect fit.

Jo, Sarah and all sales advisors have been professionally trained to measure feet and fit shoes. The emphasis is on choice and

Oddsox is an independent children’s shoe shop recently opened in Bishopston, providing beautiful shoes for growing feet.

personal service with the aim of taking the stress out of shoe shopping for children. Customers are given a loyalty card which offers 40% off the sixth pair of shoes purchased.

Oddsox is currently running a Back to School promotion until the end of September. Mum or Dad receive a voucher for a FREE reflexology session with Anne Brunton (www.annebrunton.co.uk) with their purchase of school shoes (one voucher per family)

Although Oddsox has only been open for a few months, the shop is already becoming established on this up and coming stretch of the famous Gloucester Road (more independent shops than any other high street in the UK). Feedback from local parents has been extremely positive, and Oddsox looks forward to welcoming families from all over Bristol.

With Olympic dust settling and the Season changing, Howard Davis, the Director of CJ Hole Clifton looks at how you can plan for a new home before the end of the year.

The race is on. The holiday gear has been put away. Those Gold Medals are out on display. The children are back at school. Frighteningly, autumnal goodies are already on the supermarket shelves. It must be September, and there’s the rush for some to sell their property and buy a new one just in time to be in for Christmas.

If that’s your plan, then here are six top tips to help move things along-

1. Try not to apply an arbitrary timetable to your sale and purchase - especially one that is influenced by Christmas or the end of the year. It could add unnecessary pressure at what could be an already stressful time. Ultimately the speed of property transactions rests on price and not on whimsical desire.

2. Price your property today based on what someone will realistically pay and not the sum you need to buy the property you want, or the amount you think you should have. That way disappointment lies.

3. Be flexible. Yours will not be the only agenda. Others in the transaction, and perhaps up and down a chain, will have their own agendas too. Be reasonable and prepared to compromise. The economic climate almost demands it at the moment.

4. Clean, paint, de-clutter, shine, stage, beautify and equip for all you are worth. Lots of other savvy sellers will be doing the same to attract a good buyer. You don’t want to be left with a bad one.

5. Remember a house is not just for Christmas. It is for all the year round. It is for you and your family. If it is worth buying it really is worth waiting for.

6. If you do make it into your new home by the time the season changes again, that will be in part down to the hard work of a big team- you, your agent, your solicitor, your bank or financial advisor and your surveyor. Make sure you choose the right ones to support you in the process. If we have learned anything this summer, it’s that a great team can make anything happen!

Students at The Red Maids’ School in Westbury-on-Trym have had a busy summer break.

The holidays began with a trip to Uganda for a group of Year 11 girls as part of their work with the United World Schools Trust with whom they have helped build a school in the remotest part of the country.

To mark the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, a contingent of Red Maids made the journey to the Olympic stadium having been specially selected to take part in the guard of honour welcoming the athletes into the arena.

If that wasn’t enough, 14 girls were chosen by Bristol’s “View” art gallery at Hotwell Road to display pieces of their artwork for the enjoyment of the general public. Headmistress of The Red Maids’ Senior School, Mrs. Isabel Tobias, said: “I am so proud of our students for what they achieve and must pay tribute to our staff who support them every step of the way.”

Redland High School is a caring and purposeful community that offers a fine academic education with a strong track record of excellent examination results and a wide range of extra curricular opportunities. Here students can discover their talents and strengths, developing good relationships with others within a secure environment with excellent pastoral care.

Our experienced teachers inspire girls to think independently and discover their potential. We foster a sense of belonging that creates the security for girls to develop self-esteem and a strong work ethic rooted in high achievement.

In the Junior School (age 3-11), we ensure that the girls acquire excellent core skills but also devote time to many extras that are not part of the national curriculum. Class sizes are small to ensure each girl gets optimum attention and to enable the girls to express their individuality.

Scholarships (academic, music, sport and art) are available for entry at 11+ 13+ and 16+. Means tested fee assistance is available for girls of ability to enter years 5, 6 and all years of the Senior School.

Teaching Quality“Tamara is an extremely experienced yoga teacher and she was both friendly and approachable. She explains each pose in a clear, soft voice before demonstrating it to the class. She also recommends slightly altered poses for ladies in advanced pregnancy with bigger bumps! There is no pressure to hold the yoga poses for any length of time and she encourages everyone to take breaks when needed. Tamara helps each individual where necessary to achieve the correct positioning.”

Centre environment“YogaWest has a calm, relaxing ambiance with two large and comfortable studios. All the equipment you could possibly need is there, including mats, blocks and blankets, so there is no need to bring anything other than yourself, some comfortable clothing and a bottle of water. It is easy to find and very central, just off Gloucester Road, which is easily accessed by car, bus or by foot. ”

Reader’s Corner ReviewPregnancy Yoga ClassesOur lucky reader Karen signed up for our Reader’s Corner offer in February and she tried out 3 taster classes of pregnancy yoga by the Yogawest (www.yogawest.co.uk). Here is her feedback on the yoga classes.

About the pregnancy yoga Classes“I started Yogawest pregnancy classes when I was 25 weeks pregnant to help relaxation and to prepare myself for labour. I really enjoy the prenatal exercises and found them to help with pregnancy-related back pain and difficulty sleeping. After only a couple of weeks, I felt more supple and was able to achieve some of the more challenging poses easily. The breathing techniques practised during the guided relaxation at the end of the class helped with calming the mind and allowed some quiet time away from the busyness of everyday life to connect with the baby before the birth.”

Use water to glue the body to the trousers and stick the spaghetti in the middle for support. This will be trimmed later

Roll out into sausage like shape to form arms.

With the rounded tool make holes in the arms.

Make finger impressions by pressing gently and wet the holes to glue together the hands and arms.

Create oval shape for the head and 3 tiny balls. (2 for ears and 1 for the nose)

You can use a nozzle end or tool to create a mouth.

16 Roll out hair coloured fondant and cut out a flower shape.
