FOYER FEATURES

WELCOMEAs 2016 flies by, it is time to launch our July 2016 – January 2017 program of exhibition and events at Redland Art Gallery (RAG). Our Family Sunday events, workshops for all ages and outreach programs have proved so popular that we have developed even more for all to enjoy.

With a major focus on profiling artists with a connection to the Redlands we celebrate the life and work of Sheelah Mee (1920 – 2013) in All About Mee; showcase Maryann Talia Pau’s CATCHING Light installation of woven stars for the One Million Stars to End Violence project; and bring together members of Redlands’ art groups for In Focus 2016.

At Redland Art Gallery, Capalaba visitors can view Mini watercolours, modern scrimshaw and prints by Brian Hatch as he shares his travels around Australia or take an historical journey through Ancient Greece with Dwight Ricketts, a young man with asperger syndrome who uses his art to create his own special language. Later in the year, explore local flora with Denise Piva in One Tree or view one of the many postcard-sized artworks by members of local art groups in In Focus 2016.

Pacific Art from the Searle Collection also features at Cleveland. Ross Searle, a collector and curator of contemporary Pacific Islander Art shares his extensive collection including contemporary textiles, weavings, bilums, tapa, baskets, body decoration, small sculptures, prints and paintings.

We are also excited to be presenting two major awards at RAG, Cleveland. In September the Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art recognising excellence in senior visual arts education from the South East region of Queensland opens. Presented by the Department of Education and Training in partnership with RAG, up to 40 excellence awards across the state will be announced.

Redland Art Awards returns in October and we look forward to showing the shortlisted entries for our biennial painting competition with a 2016 prize pool totalling over $20,000. Entries are expected from Australia wide and visitors can vote for their favourite entry when viewing the exhibition.

REDLAND ART GALLERY COLLECTIONThe Redland Art Gallery Collection currently houses over 435 artworks produced by more than 150 artists. Artists represented include local, emerging, established, early settler and Indigenous artists. Redland City Council is committed to resourcing and facilitating the acquisition and management of a quality visual arts, craft and design collection that reflects the diversity and uniqueness of Redlands’ heritage, culture, identity and sense of place.

BRIAN HATCHMini watercolours, modern scrimshaw and prints

Mini watercolours, modern scrimshaw and prints showcases a series of miniature watercolours and imaginative landscapes and seascapes inspired by Brian’s travels around Australia. Brian’s creative approach uses rags as brushes and a wet-in-wet technique where colours and shapes merge. The scrimshaw-style zinc plates series followed from a visit to Hawaii where the artist saw engraved whale bones and teeth on display at a gallery in Maui. The revelation of a link between printmaking and scrimshaw, where ink or lampblack is forced into the engraved lines and the surface is wiped clean, became the inspiration for this series of scrimshaw plates and prints.An exhibition held in conjunction with Queensland Seniors Week 2016 (13 – 21 August)

As a collector and curator of contemporary Pacific Islander Art, Ross Searle has long been fascinated by how apparently ‘traditional’ forms of Pacific Art are radically transformed by new techniques, influences and materials. As a collector he has focused this interest on aspects of traditional art and craft including fibre, string bags, body adornment and small scale sculpture; and on how these forms are ‘modernised’ in ways congruent with existing traditions.

Ross Searle made his first visit to Papua New Guinea in 1989 and has been active in curating and collecting Pacific Art in the countries of the Melanesian-region including Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. His collections include contemporary textiles, weavings, bilums, tapa, baskets, body decoration, small sculptures, prints and paintings. The exhibition will also include older items of material culture that are fascinating in how adapted materials such as European-made buttons and old coins are used to replace traditional materials.

CATCHING Light is an installation of woven stars for the One Million Stars to End Violence project, created by local artist and weaver, Maryann Talia Pau. The goal is to weave one million stars for a major display at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The exhibition aims to raise awareness of the monumental work that needs to be done to end all forms of violence, including violence against women, bullying and racism.

In the lead up to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, Maryann has set a goal for the Redlands to become one of the largest Star Weave Communities and to help weave as many stars as possible by December 2016 for a display at Redland Performing Arts Centre in February 2017.

Show your support for the One Million Stars to End Violence project by dropping off your stars or weaving a star at Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland during the CATCHING Light installation.

DWIGHT RICKETTSAncient Greece

Redlands artist, Dwight Ricketts has created a unique series of paintings which shows Ancient Greece in all its glory. Dwight takes you on an historical journey through Ancient Greece, with his paintings highlighting Greek culture and everyday life at that time. A young man living with asperger syndrome, Dwight uses his art to express his views and feelings and create his own special language.An exhibition held in conjunction with Disability Action Week 2016 (11 – 17 September)

The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art recognise and promote excellence in senior visual art education throughout Queensland state and non-state schools. Now in its 26th year, the program has helped raise community awareness of the degree of sophistication in concepts, diversity of technical competence, and the high standard of visual art education in Queensland secondary schools.

Each education region hosts a regional exhibition which showcases all artworks submitted to the program from that region. All awardees from the South East region including up to 40 excellence awards across the state, will be announced at the regional exhibition official opening.

All excellence awarded artworks will feature at the QAGOMA in 2017.Presented by the Department of Education and Training in partnership with Redland Art Gallery

FREE KIDS AND TEEN WORKSHOPSRedland Art Gallery offers free workshops for kids and teens throughout the year as part of the gallery’s annual program. Workshops are a great way to develop skills or a fun holiday activity for children.

DENISE PIVAOne Tree

FLOOR TALK AND AFTERNOON TEA2pm Saturday 5 November 2016

One Tree is local artist Denise Piva’s exploration of a poinciana tree located on the corner of Middle and Bloomfield Streets, just outside Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland. The poinciana tree has been a feature of the Cleveland streetscape since the 1930s with a significant refurbishment and planting in the 1990s. Apart from its historical significance, the poinciana is an interesting tree with its fluid, expressive limbs and wrinkly exterior. One Tree showcases paintings and photographs of the tree from different angles, distances, light and seasons. This focus on the different aspects of the poinciana is intended to encourage locals to observe and acknowledge the everyday beauty of these trees.

REDLAND ART AWARDS 2016Redland Art Awards is a biennial contemporary painting competition open to all Australian artists, presented by Redland Art Gallery. Redland Art Awards 2016 features four prizes, totalling over $20,000. The primary award will be an acquisitive prize of $15,000. There will also be runner up awards of $4,000 and $2,500 Local Environment Award, as well as The Meredith Foxton People’s Choice Award of $500.

Now celebrating its 30th year, Redland Art Awards is presented at Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland and the competition always proves to be a program highlight. Visitors are encouraged to vote for their favourite entry when viewing the exhibition.

IN FOCUS 2016An annual focus of Redland Art Groups

Presented simultaneously at both galleries, In Focus 2016 celebrates the wealth of artists living and working in the Redlands and the important role art groups play in the cultural life of the region. The exhibition brings diverse art groups together, facilitating networking and collaboration between members, with artworks across a range of media. The artists’ individual responses to the 2016 theme, ‘memories’, working within the gallery set parameters of size and support, is sure to be a highlight of this exhibition.

This exhibition celebrates Sheelah Mee, an artist and teacher in the Brisbane modernist scene from the 1970s. She lived in Redland City from 1972 until 2004, and was involved with the Redland Yurara Art Society. Mee made paintings, prints, and sculptures that express the reality of her domestic environment.

What remains compelling about Mee is her creative drive. From the moment her six children were independent, she committed to the art practice that she had first explored as a young woman in London. From the 1970s and into the 21st century, she worked prolifically, exhibited in galleries and prizes, and enjoyed success up to and including her last exhibition (2007). All About Mee expresses her creativity in media from paintings to prints, sculpture to sewing, from the minutiae of her domestic environment to her influence on other artists.

All About Mee is curated by Louise Martin-Chew and Dominique Macedo.

REDLAND ART GALLERY STOREThe Redland Art Gallery Store, located next to the reception desk, features wares from local artisans in the Redlands and the wider Brisbane region. The store is the perfect place to purchase jewellery, ceramics, textiles, postcards, greeting cards and publications, as well as unique gifts.

Redland Art Gallery is inviting local artisans and designers to submit proposals for small scale handcrafted items (eg. jewellery, ceramics, textiles, limited edition prints, artist books, handmade cards and paper craft) to be featured in the Redland Art Gallery Store.
