Notes on the Programby Ted Panken

“The sound of the tenor saxophone drewme to it more than anything else. It’s verypowerful and authoritative, yet incrediblypoignant, beautiful, sympathetic. But it tookme a long time before I realized that I neededto work on my sound. As a young musician, you want to play hip ideas and work out yourchops, and you forget that none of it meansnothing without a soul, without a voice.”

—Joshua Redman, 1994

“A certain eclecticism is fundamental to mymusical nature. The love and desire to play alot of different styles of music is part of whoI am, and I feel no need to get rid of that.”

—Joshua Redman, 1995

“When I got to New York in 1991, a majortopic of discussion was this faux contro-versy of a conflict between tradition andinnovation—either you are embracing thelineage, legacy, and history of acoustic jazz,or you’re doing something radical, revolu-tionary, and new. Some musicians acceptedthat view and chose a side. Others resistedit and chose not to choose. They tried towork within a variety of languages, toimmerse themselves in a variety of vocabu-laries, and to express themselves in a nat-ural, organic way. They hoped that overtime those would get synthesized, anddidn’t consciously try to wear the mantle ofinnovation, but certainly also not to be back-ward-looking. As you might suspect, I con-sider myself one of those musicians.”

—Joshua Redman, 2009

Over four sets this weekend at The AllenRoom, his first-ever Jazz at Lincoln Centerappearance with his own ensemble, JoshuaRedman presents the group that performedon Beyond and Passage of Time. Recordedin 1999 and 2001, respectively, these datescapped a decade of increasingly accom-plished saxophone and rhythm sectionrecordings, beginning with Redman’s epony-mous 1992 debut, and followed sequentially

by, among others, Moodswing, FreedomIn The Groove, and Timeless Tales (ForChanging Times).

In 2002 Redman began to document amore open-ended sonic canvas, plugging inon Elastic and Momentum with keyboardistSam Yahel and drummer Brian Blade, andthen exploring the open spaces of the sax-ophone-bass-drums trio on Back East andexpanding to double-trio on Compass. These formations coalesced on last year’sWalking Shadows, an 11-tune ballad recitalthat framed him in duo, trio, and quartetcontexts with a 16-instrument stringorchestra. Although the proceedings werecompletely spontaneous and transpiredwith barely a rehearsal, each of Redman’simprovised declamations was patient andrelaxed, with an aura of inevitability.

When Walking Shadows came out lastspring Redman decided to reconvene andtour with Aaron Goldberg, Reuben Rogers, and Gregory Hutchinson, his working bandfrom 1998 through 2001. “We’re playingsome ballads from the new record and neworiginals I wrote for this band, as well asolder originals and standards,” he says. “Wealways had a great connection, and we’ve allgrown so much since we disbanded. It’s likewe’re picking up from where we left off, buteveryone has matured. They’re all creativevirtuosos, and they come to play everynight, with no agenda.”

In point of fact, coming to play every night, regardless of the setting, is a constant tropeof Redman’s distinguished two decades as aprofessional improviser. “I play my bestwhen I trust my instincts,” he states, describing his ongoing modus operandi.“Now, having played without piano for tenyears has helped me grow as a saxophonist.I think my ideas have more clarity andweight; I know more about harmony andhave more melodic freedom. But playingquartet seems like the most natural instru-mentation for me. If I had to play in only onegroup setting for the rest of my musical life,it would certainly be the quartet.”

TheJazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with WyntonMarsalis brings forth two decades of experience inpresenting interactive, amusing, family-friendlyshows to introduce and illuminate Brubeck’s extraor-dinary life to young and old alike, kicking off a festivalcelebrating Brubeck’s incomparable contributions tojazz, culture, and more.Free pre-concert activities at 12:15pm & 2:15pm

Dianne ReevesFebruary 14–15 at 8pm“Grandeur with refinement,” the New York Timeswrote, describing the impact of Dianne Reeves’February 2012 performance in Rose Theater. On herreturn to Jazz at Lincoln Center for Valentine’s Day,the four-time GRAMMY® Award winner will demon-strate that no singer is better equipped to captivateand seduce you with songs of love and romance. Herastonishing instrument is a given, but even moreimpressive is her refusal to hide behind it–withnuanced restraint and dynamics, she unfailinglyinhabits every story she spins into song. Reeves isjoined by Peter Martin and Raymond Angry on key-boards, Peter Sprague on guitar, Sean Jones ontrumpet, Tia Fuller on saxophone, Reginald Veal onbass, Terreon Gully on drums, and Nadia Washingtonand Brianna Thomas on vocals.

JLCO Hosts: Kenny Garrett & The Music of Mulgrew MillerFebruary 21–22 at 8pmFor the first of two “Jazz at Lincoln Center OrchestraHosts” concerts of the 2013-14 season, JLCO trom-bonists Chris Crenshaw and Vincent Gardner turntheir attention to the music of pianist Mulgrew Millerand 2014 GRAMMY® Award nominee, saxophonistKenny Garrett, whose paths intersected duringtenures with Mercer Ellington, Woody Shaw, and ArtBlakey and the Jazz Messengers. As both mastershave primarily focused on small ensembles in pre-senting their respective voices over the last twodecades (Miller with the Wingspan combo [of whichGarrett was also a member]; Garrett in quartet and

trio contexts after a long run with Miles Davis), it willbe fascinating to hear this music performed with theJazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with WyntonMarsalis’ unique sound and sensibility. These con-certs will be performed in honor of Mulgrew Miller.Free pre-concert discussion, nightly, 7pm.

Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding, Leo Genovese:The Spring QuartetFebruary 28–March 1 at 8pmJazz at Lincoln Center convenes a cooperative all-starquartet representing three generations, including 2012NEA Jazz Master Jack DeJohnette on drums, serialpoll-winner Joe Lovano on tenor saxophone, 2011“Best New Artist” GRAMMY® Award winnerEsperanza Spalding on bass, and Argentinean pianistLeo Genovese. They will undoubtedly fulfillDeJohnette’s stated dictum of being “open, preparedfor the unexpected, and willing to follow that where ittakes us and coming up with music that’s different andalso makes sense and communicates.” Opening theproceedings is the 24-year-old Mack Avenue recordingartist and 2014 GRAMMY® Award nominee CécileMcLorin Salvant, whose timeless conception of jazzand blues expression spans Bert Williams, BessieSmith, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, andAbbey Lincoln — styles she refracts in her own argot.Salvant will perform a 35-minute opening set; the quartet will follow with an approximately 70-minute set.

Tomatito: An Evening of FlamencoMarch 15 at 8pmIn partnership with the New York Flamenco Festival,Jazz at Lincoln Center presents an ensemble led bythe magisterial Andalusian Gitano guitarist and 2013Latin GRAMMY® Award winner Tomatito, whosethrilling performance blends the earthy sound of clas-sical flamenco and the sophisticated harmonic tem-plate of modern jazz. A teenage protégé of thelegendary cantante Camarón de la Isla and the iconicguitarist Paco DeLucia, Tomatito—whose 2010release Sonata Suite earned him his second LatinGRAMMY® Award—is a key figure in coalescing fla-menco vocabulary with North African and Afro-Caribbean idioms, and in extending flamenco’s rangevia consequential collaborations.
