Widely adopted in the general industry.Standardized by the Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association (JEMA). Adopted bythe automobile industry in Japan.
Widely adopted in the automobile industry, mainly in the EU area.
Open network prevalent mainly in the EU area (France).
Widely adopted in the automobile industry, mainly in the EU area.
Mainly in the food industry. Allocated in a deconcentrated way with a small number of points.
Mainly in the North American area. Adopted in the fields of building automation and industry equipment.
Application of the CAN technology. Adopted in the semiconductor industry.
Mainly adopted in the U.S.A. as a higher ranked protocol than DeviceNet. (Between PLC and PLC)
Ethernet technology. Transmits the 1000-point I/O data in 30 µs.
Proprietary network (local network) developed by Japanese PLC manufacturers.
Proprietary network (local network) developed by Japanese PLC manufacturers.
Adoption of the optical communications technology. Mainly in the EU area, adopted in the automobile industry.
Besides common I/O data communications, additional data such as self-diagnosis information, etc. are included in order to enhance the reliability of the communications.
Integration of compact PLC function. Considered as a systematic product toward the small-sized production line.
Using the common TCP/IP technology among the Ethernet communications technologies. Creates a communications link between high end systems using Ethernet and I/O equipment using DeviceNet,PROFIBUS or Modbus.
Protocol means the serial data is sent and/or received in accordance with a named specification.
The communication speed refers to the volume of data communicated per second and is described in bps or bits per second.1 kbps means that 1,000 bits per second can be transmitted and 1 Mbps means 1,000,000 bits per second. For example, assuming that 100 bits is transmitted at 1 kbs, its transmission time will be 0.1 seconds. If transmitted at 1 Mbps, it is possible to transfer in 0.0001 seconds.

A serial transmission system can control multiple solenoid valves by using only the communication line from the PLC’s communication module (master module) or it can read the signal from the various sensors. This system can also be called a “Fieldbus system”.
Wiring the coil of each solenoid valve, one by one, to the output unit on the PLC is called “Parallel wiring”. Each valve in use needs to be connected. Therefore, wiring in accordance with the number of solenoid valves or sensors in use is required.
A SI unit is a device which can control the solenoid valve through serial communication.

Number of outputs is the number of solenoid or output devices that can be controlled.
Number of inputs is the number of various sensors such as an auto switch, pressure switch, etc. that can be connected.
Output refers to the control device for turning on/off the solenoid coil.
Input/Output refers to the ability for ON-OFF control (output) of a solenoid valve, as well as the reading (input) of a sensor signal, such as from an auto switch or pressure switch.
Protocol means the serial data is sent and/or received in accordance with a named specification.
Open network means a standard that has been made public and is widely accepted.

UL/CSA standards CE markingGlossary of terms
UL and CSA standards are applied in North America where it (U.S.A. and Canada) symbolizes the safety of electric products, and are defined to mainly prevent danger from an electrical shock or fire, resulting from defective electrical products. The power supply of the SI unit is 24 V DC, which does not meet the voltage requirement for the electrical shock category. However, measures against a fire hazzard have been taken. Some SI units are UL/CSA certified.
CE marked products or equipment that are exported from Japan to countries that are EU members, must confirm to the EC directives. SMC products are subject to either or both the low power voltage directive (regarding electrical safety) or the EMC directive (regarding solenoid conformity). The operating voltage of the SI unit is 24 V DC, therefore it is not subjected to the low voltage directive (50 to 1000 V AC or 75 to 1500 V DC). The SI unit undergoes EMC testing by a third party and bears the CE marking (self-declaration).Since our product is ultimately a component which is integrated into the equipment of a user, the user must verify that the equipment or facility confirms to the EC directive.

Enclosure Valve interfaceGlossary of terms
The enclosure is rated using the IP (International Protection) standard (IEC60529) which focuses on protection against dust or water.
IP20: Protection against fingers entering the enclosure but not specifically against water.
IP65: Protection against dust entering the enclosure and not greatly affected by jets of water from all directions.
IP67: Protection against dust entering the enclosure and immersion in water at a specific pressure and time.
The valve interface is the connection between the SI unit and the solenoid valve's manifold.
Plug-in: The connector on the SI unit and the solenoid valve’s manifold directly plug into each other.
Plug lead: The SI unit and the solenoid coil are connected with wires having a connector.
Flat ribbon cable: The SI unit and solenoid valve’s manifold are connected together with a flat ribbon cable having a MIL connector.

The centralized type means the SI unit and solenoid valve’s manifold are integrated. An SI unit is necessary for every protocol.
The de-centralized type refers to the GW (Gateway) method. From the Gateway, the solenoid valve’s manifold and the input devices can be located remotely. The replacement of the Gateway enables changing between the various protocols.
Centralized and De-centralized type (Gateway method) Bar stock type and Stacking typeGlossary of terms
The bar stock type consists of a manifold base made of Aluminum with a fixed number of manifold stations. The stacking type consists of a cassette base manifold or a tie-rod base manifold both of which allow increasing/decreasing of the number of stations easily.
