Reducing Global Warming

What can governments do?

• Encourage ways of generating electricity with out burning fossil fuels .

• Set energy efficiency standards for building, goods, and processes.

• Reduce the energy used for transport by discouraging the use of cars.

• Reduce public demand for travel, electricity, and material.

What can governments do?

• Set legal binding annual carbon dioxide reduction targets.

• Public information campaigns.• Tackle the gas guzzlers.• Oblige oil companies to blend biofuels into

forecourt petrol and diesel.• Slash the growth of cheap flights.• Sign up developing nations to

environmental targets.

What can the government do?

• Convince the US to take climate change seriously.

• Decentralise energy supply systems.

• Boost neglected renewable energies ; Solar, wave and tidal power.

• Off shore wind.

Science to the rescue

• Spread iron granules in the southern oceans. This would help the growth of plankton, which take dissolved carbon dioxide from the ocean. The oceans would remove more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

• Capture the carbon dioxide produced at power stations. Then compress it into a liquid and pump it into disused oil reservoirs beneath the sea bed.

What can you do?

• Perhaps you will take action yourself, now and in the future. You could use a car less, have fewer holidays involving flying, use electricity from slightly more expensive renewable sources. Perhaps you think laws should be passed to encourage or even force others to do the same.

Ten things you can do at home to prevent global warming

• Turn off electrical appliances not in use.• Leave the car in the drive• Shower, don’t bath.• Conserve hot water• Buy from local shops• Minimise tumble dryer use.• Insulate lofts, walls and windows. • Holiday in the U.K.• Compost and recycle.• Use energy saving light bulbs.
