Dear Public Health Symposium Attendees

Welcome to the 12th annual Daniel S Blumenthal Public Health Symposium We are delighted to have

you join us as we address health equity and community engagement research clinical preventive

medicine (preventive medicine skills) and public health practice and their impact on the community as

we pursue our vision to ldquolead the creation and advancement of health equityrdquo

Our theme this year is ldquoThe Legacy of Community Engagement and Public Health Practice Advancing

Health Equity Through Academic Excellencerdquo Our Daniel S Blumenthal Lecturer this year is Dr Brian

Smedley Chief of Psychology in the Public Interest where he ldquoleads the American Psychological

Associationrsquos efforts to apply science and practice of psychology to the fundamental problems of human

welfare and social justicerdquo Dr Smedley is also the Co-Founder of the National Collaborative for Health

Equity a project that connects research policy analysis and communications with on- the- ground

activism to advance health equity His areas of expertise include racism and health inequities social

determinants of health health care disparities and diversity in health professions

Our Symposium invited speaker is our own Daniel Dawes JD Director of the Satcher Health Institute

and Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine Mr Dawes is

the author of two books that discuss social determinants of health and its impact on policies that affect

our health and healthcare

As a special treat we will showcase the faculty within the department and their scholarly work through

samplings of publications that have been made available These works display the legacy of health equity

from the department as we strive to address health equity as an acknowledgement of the work of Dr

Daniel S Blumenthal and his influence over this next generation of community health professionals

We anticipate that the sharing of evidence-based strategies best practices lessons learned and

recommendations for action during this half-day conference will enhance the capacity of local

communities and key stakeholders to mobilize to mitigate negative health outcomes and social impacts

healthier local communities through public health practices

2021 Daniel S Blumenthal Virtual Public Health Symposium

Legacy of Community Engagement and Public Health Practice Advancing Health Equity Through

Academic Excellence

This symposium honors the legacy of Daniel Sender Blumenthal MD MPH who devoted almost 40 years

teaching medical and other health professionals how to properly treat and care for disadvantaged underserved

populations He was unwavering in his commitment to empowering communities and worked tirelessly in local

Atlanta communities to bring quality healthcare services research and resources to some of the citys most

impoverished areas

He was the founding Chairman of the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine at MSM and

worked tirelessly to develop innovative ways to educate medical and other health professional students on the

importance of community engagement regardless of the specialty they ultimately chose to enter Although he

retired from the medical school in 2014 he continued to work with Morehouse School of Medicine as Professor

and Chair Emeritus of the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine until the final day of his

life Dr Blumenthal was proud of the departmentrsquos achievements in undergraduate and graduate medical

education and was most proud of the development and implementation of the MSM Prevention Research Center

which was founded in 1998 under his leadership with a grant from Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention This Center continues to operate today with CDC funding and has made an impact on the health of

communities in Atlanta the State of Georgia the Nation and beyond

Brian D Smedley PhD

Brian D Smedley PhD is Chief of Psychology in the Public Interest

where he leads APArsquos efforts to apply the science and practice of psychology

to the fundamental problems of human welfare and social justice A

national thought leader in the field of health equity Dr Smedley got his

start in Washington DC as an APA Congressional Science Fellow and

subsequently served at APA as Director of Public Interest Policy Most

recently he was co-founder and Executive Director of the National

Collaborative for Health Equity (wwwnationalcollaborativeorg) a project

that connects research policy analysis and communications with on-the-

ground activism to advance health equity He was also co-Director of the

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Leadership National

Program Center From 2008 to 2014 Dr Smedley was Vice President and

Director of the Health Policy Institute of the Joint Center for Political and

Economic Studies in Washington DC a research and policy organization

focused on addressing the needs of communities of color

Previously Dr Smedley was Research Director and co-founder of a

communications research and policy organization The Opportunity

Agenda (wwwopportunityagendaorg) which seeks to build the national

will to expand opportunity for all Prior to helping launch The Opportunity

Agenda Dr Smedley was a Senior Program Officer at the Institute of

Medicine (IOM) where he served as Study Director for the IOM reports In

the Nationrsquos Compelling Interest Ensuring Diversity in the Health Care

Workforce and Unequal Treatment Confronting Racial and Ethnic

Disparities in Health Care among other reports on diversity in the health

professions and minority health research policy

Among his awards and distinctions in 2013 Smedley received the American

Public Health Associationrsquos Cornely Award for social activism in 2009

Smedley received the Congressional Black Caucus Congressional

Leadership in Advocacy Award in 2005 he received a Presidential Citation

from the APA in 2004 he was honored by the RainbowPUSH coalition as a

ldquoHealth Trailblazerrdquo award winner and in 2002 he was awarded the

Congressional Black Caucus ldquoHealthcare Herordquo award Dr Smedley

received a PhD degree in Clinical Psychology from UCLA in 1992 and an

AB degree in Psychology amp Social Relations from Harvard University in

1986

Daniel E Dawes JD a widely respected scholar researcher educator and

leader in the health equity health reform and mental health movements is

director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of

Medicine in Atlanta Georgia and a professor of health law policy and

management He is also the co-founder of the Health Equity Leadership and

Exchange Network (HELEN) which is a nationwide network of over 2000

governmental and non-governmental leaders researchers and scholars

focused on bolstering leadership and the exchange of research information

and solutions to advance evidence-based health equity-focused policies and

programs

Dawesrsquos research focuses on the determinants or drivers of health inequities

among under-resourced vulnerable and marginalized communities and is the

pioneer of a new approach to examining inequities the political determinants

of health He brings a forward-thinking inclusive and multidisciplinary

approach to health policy authoring two groundbreaking books 150 Years of

ObamaCare and The Political Determinants of Health published by Johns

Hopkins University Press which have received critical acclaim and rave

reviews

He is the recipient of several national awards and recognition including the

American Public Health Associationrsquos Award for Significant Contribution to

Public Health the American Psychological Associationrsquos Exceptional

Leadership in Advocacy Award the Centers for Disease Control and

Preventionrsquos Health Equity Champion Award the National Medical

Associationrsquos Louis Stokes Health Advocacy Award Families USA Health

Equity Advocate Award the NMQF Minority Health Leader Award Presented

the Key to the City of St Petersburg Florida for national leadership advancing

health equity the Gift of Life MOTTEP Healthcare Vanguard Award and the

2021 Daniel S Blumenthal Virtual Public Health Symposium

Legacy of Community Engagement and Public Health Practice Advancing Health Equity Through

Academic Excellence

This symposium honors the legacy of Daniel Sender Blumenthal MD MPH who devoted almost 40 years

teaching medical and other health professionals how to properly treat and care for disadvantaged underserved

populations He was unwavering in his commitment to empowering communities and worked tirelessly in local

Atlanta communities to bring quality healthcare services research and resources to some of the citys most

impoverished areas

He was the founding Chairman of the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine at MSM and

worked tirelessly to develop innovative ways to educate medical and other health professional students on the

importance of community engagement regardless of the specialty they ultimately chose to enter Although he

retired from the medical school in 2014 he continued to work with Morehouse School of Medicine as Professor

and Chair Emeritus of the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine until the final day of his

life Dr Blumenthal was proud of the departmentrsquos achievements in undergraduate and graduate medical

education and was most proud of the development and implementation of the MSM Prevention Research Center

which was founded in 1998 under his leadership with a grant from Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention This Center continues to operate today with CDC funding and has made an impact on the health of

communities in Atlanta the State of Georgia the Nation and beyond

Brian D Smedley PhD is Chief of Psychology in the Public Interest

where he leads APArsquos efforts to apply the science and practice of psychology

to the fundamental problems of human welfare and social justice A

national thought leader in the field of health equity Dr Smedley got his

start in Washington DC as an APA Congressional Science Fellow and

subsequently served at APA as Director of Public Interest Policy Most

recently he was co-founder and Executive Director of the National

Collaborative for Health Equity (wwwnationalcollaborativeorg) a project

that connects research policy analysis and communications with on-the-

ground activism to advance health equity He was also co-Director of the

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Leadership National

Program Center From 2008 to 2014 Dr Smedley was Vice President and

Director of the Health Policy Institute of the Joint Center for Political and

Economic Studies in Washington DC a research and policy organization

focused on addressing the needs of communities of color

Previously Dr Smedley was Research Director and co-founder of a

communications research and policy organization The Opportunity

Agenda (wwwopportunityagendaorg) which seeks to build the national

will to expand opportunity for all Prior to helping launch The Opportunity

Agenda Dr Smedley was a Senior Program Officer at the Institute of

Medicine (IOM) where he served as Study Director for the IOM reports In

the Nationrsquos Compelling Interest Ensuring Diversity in the Health Care

Workforce and Unequal Treatment Confronting Racial and Ethnic

Disparities in Health Care among other reports on diversity in the health

professions and minority health research policy

Among his awards and distinctions in 2013 Smedley received the American

Public Health Associationrsquos Cornely Award for social activism in 2009

Smedley received the Congressional Black Caucus Congressional

Leadership in Advocacy Award in 2005 he received a Presidential Citation

from the APA in 2004 he was honored by the RainbowPUSH coalition as a

ldquoHealth Trailblazerrdquo award winner and in 2002 he was awarded the

Congressional Black Caucus ldquoHealthcare Herordquo award Dr Smedley

received a PhD degree in Clinical Psychology from UCLA in 1992 and an

AB degree in Psychology amp Social Relations from Harvard University in

1986

Daniel E Dawes JD a widely respected scholar researcher educator and

leader in the health equity health reform and mental health movements is

director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of

Medicine in Atlanta Georgia and a professor of health law policy and

management He is also the co-founder of the Health Equity Leadership and

Exchange Network (HELEN) which is a nationwide network of over 2000

governmental and non-governmental leaders researchers and scholars

focused on bolstering leadership and the exchange of research information

and solutions to advance evidence-based health equity-focused policies and

programs

Dawesrsquos research focuses on the determinants or drivers of health inequities

among under-resourced vulnerable and marginalized communities and is the

pioneer of a new approach to examining inequities the political determinants

of health He brings a forward-thinking inclusive and multidisciplinary

approach to health policy authoring two groundbreaking books 150 Years of

ObamaCare and The Political Determinants of Health published by Johns

Hopkins University Press which have received critical acclaim and rave

reviews

He is the recipient of several national awards and recognition including the

American Public Health Associationrsquos Award for Significant Contribution to

Public Health the American Psychological Associationrsquos Exceptional

Leadership in Advocacy Award the Centers for Disease Control and

Preventionrsquos Health Equity Champion Award the National Medical

Associationrsquos Louis Stokes Health Advocacy Award Families USA Health

Equity Advocate Award the NMQF Minority Health Leader Award Presented

Dear Public Health Symposium Attendees

Welcome to the 12th annual Daniel S Blumenthal Public Health Symposium We are delighted to have

you join us as we address health equity and community engagement research clinical preventive

medicine (preventive medicine skills) and public health practice and their impact on the community as

we pursue our vision to ldquolead the creation and advancement of health equityrdquo

Our theme this year is ldquoThe Legacy of Community Engagement and Public Health Practice Advancing

Health Equity Through Academic Excellencerdquo Our Daniel S Blumenthal Lecturer this year is Dr Brian

Smedley Chief of Psychology in the Public Interest where he ldquoleads the American Psychological

Associationrsquos efforts to apply science and practice of psychology to the fundamental problems of human

welfare and social justicerdquo Dr Smedley is also the Co-Founder of the National Collaborative for Health

Equity a project that connects research policy analysis and communications with on- the- ground

activism to advance health equity His areas of expertise include racism and health inequities social

determinants of health health care disparities and diversity in health professions

Our Symposium invited speaker is our own Daniel Dawes JD Director of the Satcher Health Institute

and Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine Mr Dawes is

the author of two books that discuss social determinants of health and its impact on policies that affect

our health and healthcare

As a special treat we will showcase the faculty within the department and their scholarly work through

samplings of publications that have been made available These works display the legacy of health equity

from the department as we strive to address health equity as an acknowledgement of the work of Dr

Daniel S Blumenthal and his influence over this next generation of community health professionals

We anticipate that the sharing of evidence-based strategies best practices lessons learned and

recommendations for action during this half-day conference will enhance the capacity of local

Brian D Smedley PhD is Chief of Psychology in the Public Interest

where he leads APArsquos efforts to apply the science and practice of psychology

to the fundamental problems of human welfare and social justice A

national thought leader in the field of health equity Dr Smedley got his

start in Washington DC as an APA Congressional Science Fellow and

subsequently served at APA as Director of Public Interest Policy Most

recently he was co-founder and Executive Director of the National

Collaborative for Health Equity (wwwnationalcollaborativeorg) a project

that connects research policy analysis and communications with on-the-

ground activism to advance health equity He was also co-Director of the

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Leadership National

Program Center From 2008 to 2014 Dr Smedley was Vice President and

Director of the Health Policy Institute of the Joint Center for Political and

Economic Studies in Washington DC a research and policy organization

focused on addressing the needs of communities of color

Previously Dr Smedley was Research Director and co-founder of a

communications research and policy organization The Opportunity

Agenda (wwwopportunityagendaorg) which seeks to build the national

will to expand opportunity for all Prior to helping launch The Opportunity

Agenda Dr Smedley was a Senior Program Officer at the Institute of

Medicine (IOM) where he served as Study Director for the IOM reports In

the Nationrsquos Compelling Interest Ensuring Diversity in the Health Care

Workforce and Unequal Treatment Confronting Racial and Ethnic

Disparities in Health Care among other reports on diversity in the health

professions and minority health research policy

Among his awards and distinctions in 2013 Smedley received the American

Public Health Associationrsquos Cornely Award for social activism in 2009

Smedley received the Congressional Black Caucus Congressional

Leadership in Advocacy Award in 2005 he received a Presidential Citation

from the APA in 2004 he was honored by the RainbowPUSH coalition as a

ldquoHealth Trailblazerrdquo award winner and in 2002 he was awarded the

Congressional Black Caucus ldquoHealthcare Herordquo award Dr Smedley

received a PhD degree in Clinical Psychology from UCLA in 1992 and an

AB degree in Psychology amp Social Relations from Harvard University in

1986

Daniel E Dawes JD a widely respected scholar researcher educator and

leader in the health equity health reform and mental health movements is

director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of

Medicine in Atlanta Georgia and a professor of health law policy and

management He is also the co-founder of the Health Equity Leadership and

Exchange Network (HELEN) which is a nationwide network of over 2000

governmental and non-governmental leaders researchers and scholars

focused on bolstering leadership and the exchange of research information

and solutions to advance evidence-based health equity-focused policies and

programs

Dawesrsquos research focuses on the determinants or drivers of health inequities

among under-resourced vulnerable and marginalized communities and is the

pioneer of a new approach to examining inequities the political determinants

of health He brings a forward-thinking inclusive and multidisciplinary

approach to health policy authoring two groundbreaking books 150 Years of

ObamaCare and The Political Determinants of Health published by Johns

Hopkins University Press which have received critical acclaim and rave

reviews

He is the recipient of several national awards and recognition including the

American Public Health Associationrsquos Award for Significant Contribution to

Public Health the American Psychological Associationrsquos Exceptional

Leadership in Advocacy Award the Centers for Disease Control and

Preventionrsquos Health Equity Champion Award the National Medical

Associationrsquos Louis Stokes Health Advocacy Award Families USA Health

Legacy of Community Engagement and Public Health Practice Advancing Health Equity Through

Academic Excellence

This symposium honors the legacy of Daniel Sender Blumenthal MD MPH who devoted almost 40 years

teaching medical and other health professionals how to properly treat and care for disadvantaged underserved

populations He was unwavering in his commitment to empowering communities and worked tirelessly in local

Atlanta communities to bring quality healthcare services research and resources to some of the citys most

impoverished areas

He was the founding Chairman of the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine at MSM and

worked tirelessly to develop innovative ways to educate medical and other health professional students on the

importance of community engagement regardless of the specialty they ultimately chose to enter Although he

retired from the medical school in 2014 he continued to work with Morehouse School of Medicine as Professor

and Chair Emeritus of the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine until the final day of his

life Dr Blumenthal was proud of the departmentrsquos achievements in undergraduate and graduate medical

education and was most proud of the development and implementation of the MSM Prevention Research Center

which was founded in 1998 under his leadership with a grant from Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention This Center continues to operate today with CDC funding and has made an impact on the health of

communities in Atlanta the State of Georgia the Nation and beyond

Brian D Smedley PhD

Brian D Smedley PhD is Chief of Psychology in the Public Interest

where he leads APArsquos efforts to apply the science and practice of psychology

to the fundamental problems of human welfare and social justice A

national thought leader in the field of health equity Dr Smedley got his

start in Washington DC as an APA Congressional Science Fellow and

subsequently served at APA as Director of Public Interest Policy Most

recently he was co-founder and Executive Director of the National

Collaborative for Health Equity (wwwnationalcollaborativeorg) a project

that connects research policy analysis and communications with on-the-

ground activism to advance health equity He was also co-Director of the

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Leadership National

Program Center From 2008 to 2014 Dr Smedley was Vice President and

Director of the Health Policy Institute of the Joint Center for Political and

Economic Studies in Washington DC a research and policy organization

focused on addressing the needs of communities of color

Previously Dr Smedley was Research Director and co-founder of a

communications research and policy organization The Opportunity

Agenda (wwwopportunityagendaorg) which seeks to build the national

will to expand opportunity for all Prior to helping launch The Opportunity

Agenda Dr Smedley was a Senior Program Officer at the Institute of

Medicine (IOM) where he served as Study Director for the IOM reports In

the Nationrsquos Compelling Interest Ensuring Diversity in the Health Care

Workforce and Unequal Treatment Confronting Racial and Ethnic

Disparities in Health Care among other reports on diversity in the health

professions and minority health research policy

Among his awards and distinctions in 2013 Smedley received the American

Public Health Associationrsquos Cornely Award for social activism in 2009

Smedley received the Congressional Black Caucus Congressional

Leadership in Advocacy Award in 2005 he received a Presidential Citation

from the APA in 2004 he was honored by the RainbowPUSH coalition as a

ldquoHealth Trailblazerrdquo award winner and in 2002 he was awarded the

Congressional Black Caucus ldquoHealthcare Herordquo award Dr Smedley

received a PhD degree in Clinical Psychology from UCLA in 1992 and an

AB degree in Psychology amp Social Relations from Harvard University in

1986

Daniel E Dawes JD a widely respected scholar researcher educator and

leader in the health equity health reform and mental health movements is

director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of

Medicine in Atlanta Georgia and a professor of health law policy and

management He is also the co-founder of the Health Equity Leadership and

Exchange Network (HELEN) which is a nationwide network of over 2000

governmental and non-governmental leaders researchers and scholars

focused on bolstering leadership and the exchange of research information

and solutions to advance evidence-based health equity-focused policies and

programs

Dawesrsquos research focuses on the determinants or drivers of health inequities

among under-resourced vulnerable and marginalized communities and is the

pioneer of a new approach to examining inequities the political determinants

of health He brings a forward-thinking inclusive and multidisciplinary

approach to health policy authoring two groundbreaking books 150 Years of

ObamaCare and The Political Determinants of Health published by Johns

Hopkins University Press which have received critical acclaim and rave

reviews

He is the recipient of several national awards and recognition including the

American Public Health Associationrsquos Award for Significant Contribution to

Public Health the American Psychological Associationrsquos Exceptional

Leadership in Advocacy Award the Centers for Disease Control and

Preventionrsquos Health Equity Champion Award the National Medical

Associationrsquos Louis Stokes Health Advocacy Award Families USA Health

Equity Advocate Award the NMQF Minority Health Leader Award Presented

the Key to the City of St Petersburg Florida for national leadership advancing

health equity the Gift of Life MOTTEP Healthcare Vanguard Award and the

Caribbean Exploratory Research Center of Excellence Service Award

Brian D Smedley PhD

Brian D Smedley PhD is Chief of Psychology in the Public Interest

where he leads APArsquos efforts to apply the science and practice of psychology

to the fundamental problems of human welfare and social justice A

national thought leader in the field of health equity Dr Smedley got his

start in Washington DC as an APA Congressional Science Fellow and

subsequently served at APA as Director of Public Interest Policy Most

recently he was co-founder and Executive Director of the National

Collaborative for Health Equity (wwwnationalcollaborativeorg) a project

that connects research policy analysis and communications with on-the-

ground activism to advance health equity He was also co-Director of the

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Leadership National

Program Center From 2008 to 2014 Dr Smedley was Vice President and

Director of the Health Policy Institute of the Joint Center for Political and

Economic Studies in Washington DC a research and policy organization

focused on addressing the needs of communities of color

Previously Dr Smedley was Research Director and co-founder of a

communications research and policy organization The Opportunity

Agenda (wwwopportunityagendaorg) which seeks to build the national

will to expand opportunity for all Prior to helping launch The Opportunity

Agenda Dr Smedley was a Senior Program Officer at the Institute of

Medicine (IOM) where he served as Study Director for the IOM reports In

the Nationrsquos Compelling Interest Ensuring Diversity in the Health Care

Workforce and Unequal Treatment Confronting Racial and Ethnic

Disparities in Health Care among other reports on diversity in the health

professions and minority health research policy

Among his awards and distinctions in 2013 Smedley received the American

Public Health Associationrsquos Cornely Award for social activism in 2009

Smedley received the Congressional Black Caucus Congressional

Leadership in Advocacy Award in 2005 he received a Presidential Citation

from the APA in 2004 he was honored by the RainbowPUSH coalition as a

ldquoHealth Trailblazerrdquo award winner and in 2002 he was awarded the

Congressional Black Caucus ldquoHealthcare Herordquo award Dr Smedley

received a PhD degree in Clinical Psychology from UCLA in 1992 and an

AB degree in Psychology amp Social Relations from Harvard University in

1986

Medicine in Atlanta Georgia and a professor of health law policy and

Exchange Network (HELEN) which is a nationwide network of over 2000

governmental and non-governmental leaders researchers and scholars

focused on bolstering leadership and the exchange of research information

and solutions to advance evidence-based health equity-focused policies and

programs

among under-resourced vulnerable and marginalized communities and is the

pioneer of a new approach to examining inequities the political determinants
