President's report for April
Each month as President, I write a report about the club and what is going on and what is planned. I cannot recall an occasion since November 2012 when I have been able to write an enjoyable and positive report, because there are people who will not let that happen.
Club members have asked me why our Club has been under the hammer, mainly through the backwash of the Australian Anglers Association. I have pointed out to them that up unt il September last year there were three of the four executives of the Association at our club meetings and around half the delegates because of dual membership, and the question lies where are the real interests and what is their program?.
It certainly has not been supportive of the Surfcasters, as our delegates have come under serious fire. Terry Fuller has had to put up with issues which are not reward for the effort he has put in because of the decision you all made at our last Annual General Meeting. You made a statement by refusing to elect some people to the Club's Committee, but this has continued where the club has been under fire from the Association and individuals which is not warranted and it is clear where it is coming from.
Your Committee has been striving to deal with the issues and lessen the burden of the club members having to be involved, but their reward is that because they are endeavouring to deal with the problems and abide by our current Constitution we now have a member who was disciplined threatening to sue them.
You as Club members need to make a statement as to whether you support the Committee you elected or cater for the people who continue to challenge your Club, its members and its Committee. If this sort of action continues who would put up their hand to be a Committee person and what sort of club would we end up with? This would have a chain reaction through other clubs and where would it all end?
If we have members who support this type of program and also continue to target C lub personnel they should have a serious look at themselves.
I point out as President we have a very qualified Committee with the common sense we ask for and you the members must support them one hundred percent. I would rather see the dissenters go away than lose one of our current Committee. They are very capable and are doing a great job in an honorary capacity for the benefit of all Surfcasters.
The pressures being applied may see some of them doing less for the Club instead of putting in their heart and soul. Our Club has been going for nearly 63 years and this is due to the quality of the people like those who are your current Committee.
Someone said to me (and it is a lot more than one) that the last two General meetings were a pleasure to be at and very enjoyable – there were no agitators present!
Enough on that subject but it is serious and we need to start to make some statements in the positive as a Club.
I had the pleasure at our last General meeting finally giving Peter Butland his membership badge even though he has been around for a while. He went over to South Australia for a while and that is my excuse.
I also welcomed Michael Inglis on your behalf and I hope they both enjoy what our Club has to offer.
We also had another new applicant in Lee Yongli present and he took the trouble to join a number of club members who fished locally at our April Field day.
To see six club members fish locally at Floreat was great and even though the fish were scarce the company was excellent. They were Reuben Ball, Michael Pisano, Lee Yongli, Pat McKeown, Dean Stewart and yours truly. There was a strong southerly wind, rain squalls and ribbon weed in the water which made it hard. Apparently on Sunday the weather was good and the salmon were present.
Reel Talk May 2015 Page 4
Mark Nurse contacted me and asked if he could come to our last Committee meeting and even though the there were a lot of items on the agenda I hope he enjoyed the experience. From my point of view it is good to see new members interested enough to do so. Welcome.
Peet Wessels did the home work with the Rottnest Island Board on the cost of the bus transport for the group going to Rottnest for the May Field day. It was decided it was a goer even though the cost was around $740. It is good to see club members helping out.
Another member who has put his hand up is Gary Gildersleeves who has offered to help out with our club casting days while Ron Thomas has his holiday. Please show your appreciation by supporting Gary with your attendance and help.
Pat McKeown is now in need of your support as our Presentation night is set for Saturday 20 June at Woodvale Tavern. This has always been a great night and you are able to bring your friends along as well. The price should be the same as last year but has yet to be finalised. We need the return of the club perpetual trophies as soon as possible to either Pat, Terry Fuller or me George Holman so that engraving etc may be done.
Anyone who wishes to donate a prize for the night is welcome to do so. Make sure you keep your program free so you can come along to our Club Presentation night.
Geoff and Rhonda Raftis are planning another caravan trip over East starting in August and we wish them well.
The trip Kaye and I did to Hopetoun and Esperance for a bit over three weeks in our caravan was very enjoyable. There has been a lot of work done in Esperance particularly along the foreshore which is a credit to them. This is a location that is worthy of consideration for the Club to look at.
The reports are that the salmon are currently on our local beaches so you should go fishing with your mates locally.
Let us hope we can get our club functioning as we want it so we can enjoy each other's company.

Field Days Peter Osborne gave some certificates for fish caught recent field days.
The April field day is Cape to Cape but school holidays are on and accommodation is almost impossible to find. Members discussed and voted on a proposal to extend the local field day for April to Preston Beach to give somewhere for members to camp near their 4 wheel drives. The motion was lost by 1 vote.
Costs for the bus transport for the Rottnest Field day in May had increased a lot. Peet Wessels will contact the company and attempt to get the costs down to a more reasonable amount. The venue may be changed if costs are too high. Peet will report by the Committee meeting. (Booking and venue confirmed 13 April)
Peter Osborne gave a brief report on the AAA National convention at Wallaroo in March.

Fishing together on field days
The Club encourages members to fish together on Field days, and will help arrange this. However it helps everyone if members who want a lift, want help or want to fish with someone, ask and arrange to go with other members. It's best done early, but can also be done either before or during the sign on or at the previous General meeting or any Club event.
Check at the General meeting for arrangements and discussions about when and where members can meet to fish together locally in the metropolitan area.

Update to Species Badge competition
This is a continuous work in progress. The list of species registered to members has been checked for catches on the April Field day as recorded by the FDO in the Field Day spreadsheet, plus some other entries.
A member may ask for a capture to be added by advising the Recorder of the details of a capture already recorded in the Club's fishing Field days or Open competitions. Badges will be presented at the annual Presentation night. The full list of members' recorded catches is on the Club website at http://www.surfcasters.iinet.net.au/SpeciesCompetitionEntries.pdf
Species badge rules, from section 5.1 of Competition Rules, are:
1. Submit entries to the Recorder on the appropriate form, unless caught on a Field Day. 2. Fish may be caught at any time including on Club fishing Field Days. 3. A member must capture ten (10) of the listed species to qualify for a Species badge. 4. Weighing of fish, photographs and witnesses to weight are optional. 5. Fish must be a minimum of 20 cm or comply with Department of Fisheries minimum lengths if these are greater.

Dry casting report 29 March 2015
While there is not much to say about our last drycasting day except that it was very disappointing with only 7 turning up on the day. I realize that a few had been over at the AAA National championships and 1 or 2 were on holidays but even so there were quite a few of the old faces that weren't there.
Let's all put in an effort and make the attendance book look a little healthier next month.
A big thanks to those that did turn up to help with the usual work that has to be done, and also making the day most enjoyable.
All the scores are in the Reel Talk.
The next dry casting on Sunday 3 May is the first casting event for the new 2015/16 Competition year and extra Sportsperson of the Year points apply. Every cast over 120 metres, or 100 metres for Ladies, Juniors and Veterans, receives 1 point.

April 2015 fishing field day
Cape to Cape. Overview. The April 2015 away field day, including the local venue, was spread from Busselton Jetty to the mouth of the Blackwood river at Augusta and was extended at the previous General Meeting to include local Preston. For the local event six members fished Perth local beaches, five members fished Preston and three members fished the Capes.
All venues suffered to varying degrees of rain and wind and local beaches also suffered from weed.
Some quality fish were caught with a total of 8 different species and a total bag weight for all 15 members of 46.5 kg
The trip. Cape to Cape. For the away trip, as all anglers had cabins booked a total of 3 members signed on at the Yallingup caravan park, Peet and Sandra Wessels, and Peter Osborne. Harsh weather condition prevailed for the weekend, with medium to strong and gusty wind and rain varying from heavy downpours to showers with odd patches of sunlight continuing through the weekend to give tough fishing conditions.
Compared to a year ago, hardly any other fishers were seen in the south west.
Peet and Sandra did not fish as hard as normal as Sandra’s parents were across from South Africa and doing the tourist bit was also on their agenda. They reviewed local areas and fished from Yallingup down to Margaret River with limited success.
Both had bags of herring, with some tarwhine, skippy and Sandra getting a 3.54 kg salmon. Sandra was delighted to see her bag was just a kilo heavier than Peet's.
Despite concentrated effort and looking and trying different locations they could only find the one salmon.
Peet Wessels with his bag of Skippy
Sandra Wessels with her Salmon
My story goes as follows: Following sign-on, on initially going to the rocks at Wyadup, I concentrated on fishing effort and was immediately rewarded with small, but size western rock blackfish, on my outfit rigged up for salmon. No salmon appeared but herring were thick, destroying a mulie within minutes of cast in. Hence I decided to concentrate on and get my bag of herring.
After about the fourth herring was landed, whack, this was no herring, With my light surf rod, small reel loaded with 12 lb line and a blob with 8 or 10 lb leader, and a no 4 long shank hook, with a pea size piece of prawn - I knew I was in trouble. Taking my time and playing carefully managed to work it up to the rocks. There was a V gap in the rock face wall and with a wave surge managed to get it on the edge of the rocks, scrambled down to retrieve but on grasping the leader, using another wave surge to move it up into the V gap, the leader broke.
Fortunately the wave surge was sufficient to have him sit on the rocks and enabled me to grab a really good salmon of 4.63 kg. Phew very relieved at achieving this capture. Thinking that was going to be the first of many, was disillusioned as it was the only one I caught during the competition.
Small fish were prolific; while only about 1 in 3 were size I continued to add to the bag with herring, tarwhine, skippy, cod, blackfish and a wrasse. About 4pm, I decided to clean the fish and get them on ice and take them back to the car.
Reel Talk May 2015 Page 17
On returning to the rock, using my tailor/salmon outfit on the first cast, whack on again. Salmon, no was too strong, took me 5 minutes to work out must be a samson, further consideration, the fight was not right and finally realize I had a large ray on. Worked him to the rocks and then broke him off.
Second cast after releasing the ray, was on again, no mistake this time, was a large shark, 15 kg line with drag tight as possible, it went out to sea and peeled about 250 metres of line in less than a minute. Again deliberately broke it off. But a minute of excitement until I realized I was not going to stop him. In retrospect burley attracts fish, not necessarily the species we want.
Peter Osborne with his Salmon
Hoping for a tailor, I fished through until dark. Course raining when I decided to walk out. First cleaned fish with hard work carrying fish and gear back up to the vehicle.
Following morning I went to the rocks at Yallingup. Again rain and wind but this position puts the wind behind you. Lots of western rock blackfish, but not many size, some tarwhine and a skippy including one of the latter about 8 cm caught on large hooks and a mulie. I have caught salmon at this place before, but no show for this species. Water here is very shallow. I generally start with a bait casting rig with a mulie and a small bean sinker but as usual after about a dozen cast get hooked up on the reef and had to break off. I then switched and used a large float with a mulie under. Works but a lot of bites (a downer on the float) however, as wind creates slack line this results in a lot of missed strikes.
As we agreed with all Cape to Cape participants we changed the weigh-in to Yallingup on Sunday morning and completed this by 11:15 am.
Preston. Summary only. See separate reports from the following participants that fished this beach.
While some wind and rain was encountered, conditions were not as severe as the Capes and while at Floreat, weed was not present.
The team of Gary Parkinson, Glen Wong, Peter Butland, Ken Howells, Mark Nurse, went down to Preston on Friday.
On fishing on Friday evening and Saturday morning they got into salmon and tailor plus herring. Mark managed a salmon over 5 kg.
Unfortunately over the competition period fish were there but were not as plentiful. The bigger fish captured were of good quality. Gary Parkinson landed a good tailor of 0.95 kg. but unfortunately dropped a salmon.
Mark Nurse with his salmon
Peter Butland's tailor
Peter Butland landed a tailor of 0.82 kg. and a good size salmon of 4.25 kg,; Ken Howells landed a tailor of 0.69 kg., some herring and a salmon of 3.15 kg.
Mark Nurse landed herring, six tailor with the heaviest being 0.73 kg and two salmon with the heaviest being 3.8kg. Glen Wong managed to miss out on tailor but landed herring and a salmon of 3.7 kg.
Ken Howells' salmon
Reel Talk May 2015 Page 18
Preston continued to give good capture results and was a good call for giving better opportunity to “local” fisherpersons.
Local Field day. For the local members George Holman, Pat McKeown, Dean Stewart, Michael Pisano, Reuben Ball, Lee Yongli, results were not great.
Fishing conditions encountered were wind rain and weed, water was shallow, no close in gutter, strong current from south to north.
Hence no tailor appeared and only a few herring were landed. In summary: atrocious fishing conditions.
Pat reckoned the best part of the evening was getting into his vehicle and getting out of the wind, rain and sand.
Mark Nurse with a shark caught before the Field day
To rub it in, reports said at the following evening (Sunday) salmon appeared on this stretch of beach such that any angler fishing late afternoon, and/or early evening at Floreat had a great time catching salmon.
As with salmon fishing anywhere, the key is being at the right place at the right time. With salmon in the metro area this early we hope to see more of this species at various venues over the next couple of months
Fish capture results, points scored and the top scores, based on the SCAC scoring system, are listed elsewhere in Reel Talk.

Work for the Club
As mentioned several times, I need to reduce the work I am doing for the Club and the reliance the Club has on me. I need to look after my health and well being and do things for myself and family.
Now I do not have my computer turned on or email access on anywhere near as much as before, which was far too much. I now regularly turn off my PC after an hour or two and do not turn it on again until the following day.
In future I plan to work on Club business on no more than a few days per week, and not at night nor on weekends except for obviously very urgent stuff or for my own convenience.
If that means it doesn't all get done or people have to wait for replies to their emails, then I will somehow convince myself to not feel guilty about that.
I too want to get back to the times when things were running smoothly, and my time could be spent on new things for the benefit of Club members, but there are no signs of that yet.
As a result of recent pressures, I advised the Committee at the April meeting I have not yet decided if I will nominate for any Committee positions at the August elections. Until then I will only do things which are essential for me personally to do.
Just because I have done things in the past does not mean I will continue to do those and members should not expect that they will get done.
Some usual contents are not in this May Reel Talk, and there are probably some mistakes and other omissions, and articles may be out of logical order due to not enough time spent on it.
The next biggg jobs are all the preparation for the Presentation night:- finalising the winners lists, preparing, printing and laminating or framing certificates, allocating, labeling, packing and listing the prizes, getting extra prizes, engraving of trophies, articles for Reel Talk, etc. etc. Anyone want to take over?

These are usually on the first Sunday of the month, except Fathers’ Day or when the Field day includes the first Sunday due to a long weekend.

Note 2. September avoids Fathers’ Day.
Note 3. May not be able to get a booking for Yokine Reserve due to ground maintenance. Alternative date 11 October
Note 4. December 6 has been accepted for a Bunnings sausage sizzle. May not be able to get a dry casting booking for Yokine Reserve on 6 December anyway, due to T Ball carnival.

Ray Walker's report
Just to let you all know I am alive and kicking.
I have spent the last two weeks at a camping area called Red Bluff. It is situated on the West Coast naturally, about 140 km north of Carnarvon. 60 km past Quobba station.
The weather has been a bit overcast but it has still been warm, T shirt and shorts weather. We have experienced some storms as well but everything is holding up.
It has a fantastic bay with a white sand beach and is protected from the southerly winds.
The park was just about empty when I arrived but there was a lot of work being done to bring the park up to scratch as this is the beginning of the season for them. Nothing much happens here from November to March.
They have those up market Safari tents which have just been erected again for the new season.
I am perched next to them on the side of Knobs Hill with some fantastic views of the bay. I wake up to these fantastic views every morning!
A lot of the camping areas are right on the beach a few meters from the water but I chose the views. The only facilities supplied to the rest of us is the toilets, the rest we have to supply ourselves.
I stopped at Kalbarri to deliver some videos and books to the fishing club holiday house and catch up with a friend, that trip was uneventfully.
From Kalbarri to Carnarvon I travelled through three thunderstorms and the rain was very heavy.
About 120 km out of Carnarvon I went through a storm and the countryside was awash with water, completely covering the ground. There were also a couple of sections where the road was covered by flowing water so speed was reduced right down. When I arrived at Carnarvon it was completely dry.
I have had a bit of misfortune with the battery in the camper failing, fortunately I have a small generator and that has saved the day.
I have not done a lot of fishing, just enjoying the surrounds and the peace and quiet. I have caught a few tailor fresh for breakfast.
They also have a little shop which opened on Easter. I wondered how they would make enough money with the small amount of people around. I found out the secret; they make a delicious mango smoothie, people were queuing up and waiting for them to be freshly made.
A walk in the morning, hibernate at lunchtime as it gets pretty hot and a swim in the afternoon, nothing too strenuous. 5.30pm is cheese, bickies and a cold drinks on the balcony watching the sun set.
Reel Talk May 2015 Page 25
Night time is peace and quiet and the weather cools down a bit, easy to get a good night 's sleep once you get used to the pounding seas, bleating goats, bounding kangaroos and scattering land crabs.
Actually since the Easter crowd moved in the wildlife has moved out. There is no phone coverage, internet, paper, TV or radio. The only thing I miss is the radio to keep up with current affairs and the music. I shall have to leave it to PM Abbot to keep a firm hand on the tiller.
This place kills Quobba Station as far as a camping area is concerned, unfortunately they do not have showers.
There are plenty of fishing places along the coast. I spoke to one guy who had balloon out, I am surprised he managed as the winds have been light and fluky.
He goes up regularly and prefers the area to Quobba and Steep Point. They balloon from the beaches in June and July for mackerel, I would like to come back for that, maybe next year.
I have returned to Carnarvon for a couple of days and then I will be off to Coral Bay, first stopping at the Warroora Station as they have a bush camp there.
Drop you a line next time I hit civilisation. Ray Walker

Social Organiser's report
Hello fellow club members. Hope this finds you all well.
Those that had a birthday in April, hopefully you all enjoyed that special day.
Jimmy Strong is 93 this birthday. What a milestone. Sadly Jimmy can no longer take part in club activities.
The Wignells had a busy time celebrating their special day.
Kaye Holman was allowed out on the town by herself to do some damage to the credit card. After all that time away from George they went out to a special meal that evening. Most probably Kaye would have celebrated with a cappuccino or two.
The Presentation night preparation is starting to get into gear. Let’s have a good turn up to your special night.
On speaking with Mandy our function organiser at the Woodvale Tavern, every effort will be made by them to make it a special night.
Mandy and her staff work very hard to make it an enjoyable night that’s why we keep going back there.
Everybody will receive something. You will have to come along to collect that something special.
Tickets will be available at the May General meeting.
Your menu will be in the Reel Talk. Please find it and fill it out before handing to me for submission to the Tavern.
As discussed at an earlier meeting the price will remain the same as last time due to your efforts with the Bunning’s fund raiser and Terry Fuller's kind donation.
$60 per adult, $20 per child under 12 years of age having a child's meal.
Any food allergies please note and highlight on your menu.
Please return all perpetual Trophies to George or myself as we need to organise cleaning and engraving.
Tight lines and happy fishing
Social Organiser/Membership Coordinator Pat McKeown
Tickets for Presentation night, 20 June 2015
The 2015 Presentation night will be held at the Woodvale Tavern, 143 Trappers Drive, Woodvale, starting at 6:30pm on Saturday 20 June 2015. Please put this date in your diary NOW, and keep this night free of other engagements or other things to do, so you can come to the Presentation night.
Please contact Social Organiser Pat McKeown for tickets or pay the Club Treasurer either in person, by post or by direct credit deposit into the Club's Bank account , remembering to make sure your deposit is clearly identified with your name and what it is for.
Costs have risen, but the Club will use some of the fund raising money to subsidise the t icket prices which will remain at $60 for an adult, and $20 for children of 12 years and under having the child's meal.
Please buy tickets and give your choices from the dinner menu as soon as possible.

As discussed in April's Reel Talk, this is your page to post suggestions good or bad. If you feel put out just write it up on this page.
This month we welcome new member Lee Yongli.
Lee fished with us at Floreat during the club competition and landed a couple of nice herring. Well done Lee.
All details of this fishing expedition are in the fishing report.
Please find the attached packing list for fishing trips. As you get older you really do need a reminder. Nothing like getting there and leaving reels at home. Hard to fish with a blank rod.
For members who would like to improve their casting distance let me know and we can organise a day and time to make it happen.
Any members interested in making a weekend trip to Wilbinga let me know. It is definitely four wheel drive country
Wilbinga is just north of Two Rocks and the south side of Moore River. You have to watch the beach it can be very soft and unforgiving if you are not careful.
There are several websites with good information on this location. Just type in Wilbinga and it all happens.
It will be a good experience for novice and experienced drivers.
Think what I need to take to look after myself in case I get into bother with the sand or camping overnight.
Safe fishing and driving
