OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF HERITAGE RIDGE SOUTH PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION MAY 2018 AT HERITAGE RIDGE SOUTH CAMBRIDGE Hurricane Preparedness One of the many things I learned in the Marn CARES course is how to stay connected during mes of a crisis, such as a hurricane. This can apply to you whether you are here in Flor- ida or elsewhere. The Marn County website (www.marn.fl.us) is a treasure trove of informaon. I think you could easily spend a couple hours checking things out on the website. There was way too much for me to show in pictures or detail here. But for now, I want to focus on what to do during a hurricane. My understanding is the regular updates will be posted on the website. Not only that, if you scroll down the homepage, you will see a link to MCTV, the local television staon (channel 20 on your TV). You can also get informaon through there. If you are on Facebook, there are some valuable resources there. You might search for the Marn County Board of County Commissioners page and like/join it. When you do, you will have to opon to opt to receive a number of differ- ent newsleers. You can also search for the Marn County Sherriffs Office and like their page. Both pages have informaon that may be of interest to you, but during a hurricane you should be able to find important informaon there. They are on Twier (twier.com/MarnCountygov?lang= ). By no means did we just sit in a classroom for 5 weeks. We traveled throughout the county and saw all kinds of inter- esng things in acon. One day we went to engineering where there were a mul- tude of computer screens on the wall showing different traffic intersecons throughout the county. The traffic light paerns can be changed if the need arises – in the event of an evacua- on, the traffic lights will be changed accordingly. We got to see what I will call the crisis center – the place where all the acon happens during a hurricane. It was fasci- nang to see and have all the different aspects of it explained to us. Trust me, there is a lot going on! From there, we went into the 911 call center and we were able to see that in acon. We enjoyed a live simulaon of the response to a 911 call with the paramedics rushing in to save the dummywho had collapsed on the floor. For hurricane preparedness, check out this site: www.marn.fl.us/hurricane . Here is to a safe and unevenul season!

AT HERITAGE RIDGE SOUTH CAMBRIDGE

Hurricane Preparedness One of the many things I learned in the Martin CARES course is how to stay connected during times of a crisis, such as a hurricane. This can apply to you whether you are here in Flor-ida or elsewhere. The Martin County website (www.martin.fl.us) is a treasure trove of information. I think you could easily spend a couple hours checking things out on the website. There was way too much for me to show in pictures or detail here. But for now, I want to focus on what to do during a hurricane. My understanding is the regular updates will be posted on the website. Not only that, if you scroll down the homepage, you will see a link to MCTV, the local television station (channel 20 on your TV). You can also get information through there. If you are on Facebook, there are some valuable resources there. You might search for the Martin County Board of County Commissioners page and like/join it. When you do, you will have to option to opt to receive a number of differ-ent newsletters. You can also search for the Martin County Sherriff’s Office and like their page.

Both pages have information that may be of interest to you, but during a hurricane you should be able to find important information there. They are on Twitter (twitter.com/MartinCountygov?lang= ). By no means did we just sit in a classroom for 5 weeks. We traveled throughout the county and saw all kinds of inter-esting things in action. One day we went to engineering where there were a multi-tude of computer screens on the wall showing different traffic intersections throughout the county. The traffic light patterns can be changed if the need arises – in the event of an evacua-tion, the traffic lights will be changed accordingly. We got to see what I will call the crisis center – the place where all the action happens during a hurricane. It was fasci-nating to see and have all the different aspects of it explained to us. Trust me, there is a lot going on! From there, we went into the 911 call center and we were

able to see that in action. We enjoyed a live simulation of the

response to a 911 call with the paramedics rushing in to save

the “dummy” who had collapsed on the floor.

Monthly Board of Directors’ Meeting

Wednesday, May 2 7:00 p.m. at the Clubhouse

All are welcome to attend to find out what is happening in our community.

Entertainment Director’s Report The April Dinner Dance was a mixed blessing. Everyone enjoyed Maggie's spaghetti dinner and the dancers really enjoyed the music. But the non-dancers were less impressed. Let me know if we should invite the group back. This was the last dinner dance until next Fall. But on May 12 we will have Cambridge Dog Days! Please see the info below. All tickets will be available in the Clubhouse from 9am-10am, M-F, or from Nelson Pole, 8003 Saratoga, until May 6th. People have been recommending en-tertaining music groups that they have encountered around town. Keep the contact information coming.

Check out our website for news and information!

Answers to Interesting Questions

1… WHY? Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while wom-en's clothes have buttons on the left? BECAUSE When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And that's where women's buttons have remained since. 2 ... WHY? Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help? BECAUSE This comes from the French word m'aidez meaning 'help me' - and is pronounced, approximately, 'mayday.' 3 ... WHY? Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses? BECAUSE In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synony-mous. 4 ... WHY? Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called passing the buck'? BECAUSE In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would 'pass the buck' to the next player. 5 … WHY? Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast? BECAUSE It used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would only touch or clink the host's glass with his own. 6 ... WHY? Why is someone who is feeling great 'on cloud nine'? BECAUSE Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud. If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.
